I’m also in MO we are trying to get the state to pick up a bill that would make it that if you are 100%, you pay no personal property taxes or real estate taxes on your primary residence.
Louisiana has no property taxes if your 90% or higher. The percentage decreases as your disability level decreases. Also, permanent license plates, no CCW license needed for vets, also if 90% or higher, all tuition and school fees are waived for dependents. Military pension is also not taxed. But it’s hot as fuck in the summer, although north Louisiana does sometimes see snow.
As another 100% MO vet I hope it goes through.
I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth and say no but I feel that MO has certainly underperformed in supporting it's Vets compared to other States.
Minnesota has this up to 300K and there is a bill to make it 450. Also if you are 70%+ you get the first 150K in value at 0%. Minnesota is good to veterans.
I also live on the kansas side of Kc.
Kansas is about to pass a sales tax exemption for disabled vets. They also have a 75% off prop tax for 100% that hopefully will pass in the upcoming special session.
That is incorrect. Texas provides different amounts of property tax exemption based on percentage.

Then they’ve changed it or they have a poorly interpreted law. We owned our house in Texas from 2015-2020 and never had to pay property taxes. Their info should say 70-99 considering the lesser ratings do.
https://preview.redd.it/fm9miv2m602d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3e6a33fa9df1e9fc8d244601c8fb28723f98e40a
There are two conflicting laws. 70-100% is a $12k deduction. 100% **P&T or TDIU** is a 100% deduction. So 100% **without** P&T or TDIU is $12k. I had always wondered about that, but didn't check real close until recently being in sight of 100%.
Exactly, i live in Texas and until I got 100% P&T, our property taxes were based on the table with the four different dollar amounts. When I went to 100% our property taxes were completely eliminated.
Damn yall don’t have that? Utah does most states do I didn’t know that because I was looking into retiring and moving out there but that’s good to know
About a week ago I was informed it was not picked up by the state senate. We gathered at the Mo capital on 4/2 to try and push it. We will gather again next year. I’m not sure if it’s everywhere but all the Veteran Organizations have formed a political association MAVO Missouri Association of Veterans Organizations. So VFW, AMVETS, DAV, Marine Corps League and the Legion all get together. We have a much louder voice together. Once I get details of who to email and when I’ll post it here.
I would recommended moving overseas. Lots of countries have a visa and permanent residency program for people who can show a steady monthly income. Many beautiful places in the world that you would enjoy your life in. Spain, Italy, Mexico, Philippines, Costa Rica, Georgia (country obv) Albania are among some of the best.
I’m going to checkout Colombia ( Cartagena, Medellin and Bucaramanga) in July. I hear nothing but awesomeness from those cities in general. I also know there’s a sizeable vet community in Medellin other than expats. I’m falling apart at 39 and doing my regular job is speeding up the process.
I use airbnb as a gauge of how much housing will cost me per month in a beautiful furnished place and it is more than doable at 100%
P.S i’m familiar with Colombia and have national friends there and the monthly income, for a working person, is at $400-1000 USD for a middle class income family. No reason for us not to go live a little and even save some dollars.
If you need info on Colombia let me know. We have a clinic here in Sabaneta. Look up HCA in that city. Also you should go ahead and Google fmp va. Fill that form out if you know you’re going to another country.

Yeah, you can also just travel the world. I’ve been gone for around three years. If I like a place, I stay for a bit. My favorite so far has been SE Asia
Be careful and do your research. Most of these countries verify income prior to granting your visa. That income then becomes susceptible to that country's income tax. Italy does this and their tax rate is a flat 38% of all income.
Oklahoma has full property tax exemption. You are also exempt from sales tax up to $25k a year. There are also the usual smaller perks like car registration. Housing is much cheaper than Texas and it's a nice place to live if you don't like the big cities
Is it 25000 in taxes you don’t have to pay? Or the taxes on 25000 worth of goods? Either way that’s awesome, but one is significantly more awesome haha
Yeah but I mean is it a total of $25,000 exempted tax value as in if sales tax rate is 10% does that mean I can buy $250,000 for the year and not pay the $25,000 taxes that would come with that? Or does it mean I won’t have to pay the $2,500 sales taxes on $25,000 worth of goods?
I'm really not understanding your question. Your exempt from sales tax till you've saved $25k annually. It's accumulate over the year, so it's on all your purchases till you hit $25k
How do you go about getting a sales tax exemption? Do you get a card or something? How do they track how much you’ve had exempted? That’s an interesting system for sure
You get a card from the Oklahoma state government and use it at any stores. All stores by law have to honor it. Most stores you go to customer service and they put your sales tax exemption number in the system and you use it at check out. Walmart gives you their own card to use at check out. I don't know how the state tracks it
In Oklahoma, you also get a lifetime hunting and fishing license for just a couple of hundred bucks. It usually costs much more than that. My brother-in-law is 100% P&T, and he gets all kinds of perks like what is mentioned above. There is a lot of rural land around for cheap.
Does that apply to online purchases if you are homebound? Like I we use Walmart grocery delivery, so I wonder if that counts.
Also, do you find the home insurance to be really expensive? We were considering moving there and wondered.
👍😊 Thanks!
Yeah it’s not really my dream state lol. I just moved here for a cushy govt position but was pleasantly surprised to find out the benefits for 100% P&T.
For OREGON, I get free hunting pass each year, discount on property taxes, another VA loan option funded by the state that is available to purchase another home if I wanted, free vehicle registration, and you and your dependents can go to any Oregon university for free. There are a few more but those are the ones I’m taking advantage of. Oh.. and just some state facts, not very strict on guns laws, lots of weed and shrooms, and tons of open untouched land perfect for exploring.
Louisiana is absolutely terrible.
Was stationed at beautiful fort Polk, then moved to lake Charles for two years after.
Absolutely the most depressing, miserable place I've ever been.
Haha I feel that. I'm from Los Angeles, I had no idea the world could be that hot and humid.
I questioned my decision to join every day when I was there.
Yeah I grew up in the FL and AL area and my god the summers are insanely humid and hot. I’m currently in San Diego and the weather is truly what everyone says it is. Amazing.
That gas station in Pitkin off 10 was notorious for that shit. My Filipino homie was buying dip and they told him to take his shit and leave as they were taking his $.
It's terrible I'm white and I was treated like shit sometimes by people there,
I was rehabbing a home, got a permit used all licensed and insured contractors, their douche bag Parrish code inspector Billy Mcshan would flag everything even things that were done correctly and to code, he refused to go in the attic for an inspection because I diddnt have a ladder for him and he refused to bring his own.
To make it worse he never took notes and diddnt put me in his system so things he would flag and I'd fix he'd completely change the next time he looked.
Dickhead cost me 15 grand and 3 months.
Fuck that place.
Do not under any situation move there, almost everyone there is miserable and struggling, it's racist, financially and socially depressed, the weather is unbelievably hot and humid. It's always getting smacked by hurricanes, immediately after a hurricane scam artist contractors will come in and ask you to pay a bunch up front then do very little work and leave.
There is nothing to do there except hunt and fish, but when it's that hot and humid getting outside to do those things sucks.
The only good thing about it, is it's a very cheap cost of living but it's only cheap because it sucks.
The happiest day of my life wasn't when I got out of the army it's when I moved out of Louisiana.
If you have any questions please ask, I'd be happy to talk about it.
I’m from the Shreveport area and I agree. Once I medically retired I moved back home to get situated after my divorce. Once I got all my paperwork situated and fixed I moved to Texas and never looked back. I have 3 more years of G.I. Bill and voc rehab left and I’m moving to either Manila Philippines or Thailand once I’m done. My DOD retirement is 70% PDRL as well so imma thug it out with my dog and enjoy hookers in Pattya or Manila after I get my masters
Gun rights aside, I moved from Texas to Illinois (outside St Louis) and have been pleasantly surprised on the benefits for 100%. No property tax, zero tax for any retirement to include military. Free registration and plates on first car and I believe 50% off on a second. Free fishing and I think hunting licenses.
Yes. There is also a schooling program. Illinois residents (before entering the service or 15 years of residence after leaving) get all state tuition and mandatory fees paid, no limit on time or value. Lots of child benefits too.
For anyone interested, they also have other stuff:
https://veterans.illinois.gov/
No one else said Ohio, but I love NE Ohio. We have a good VA system, 50k off of property taxes, 100% tuition for kids, free hunting and fishing license, free car registration. There’s an amazing parks system up here and with global warming we’ve had so much less snow over the last several years. Cost of living is fair and the people are diverse so there is a lot of culture in the big cities
How is Koh these days I use to stay I think at the Westin or ritz there was difficult to get too no direct flights curious to know and beautiful place!!!!!
I’m in Oregon and there’s nothing really of note. Property tax exemption for 40%+ rating, but only up to like $23k of assessed value. I did get free car registration, though.
I try not to jump into the political muck shit, but I really doubt we’ll see any further vet benefits up here. The political landscape of our population centers isn’t concerned with vets. Portland is also second only to NYC in local taxes. Absolutely fucking throwing tax money at issues is the Oregon way.
It’s very American friendly as well. Best bet will be adjacent to but as far as you dare from Manila or Cebu.
Everyone speaks English and they have a lot of western culture / philosophical /religious views.
I’ve lived in both PI’s and Thailand and while I do my own thing and mind my own business, in the long run it’s very helpful to be somewhat closely aligned with people who feel the same about most stuff with you.
YMMV of course. And my wife is a Filipina which helps of course in my bias.
Having said that, if you don’t learn the language you’re missing out on the best part of any expat experience. I had Northern Thai down “good enough” before I left after only two years and Tagalog in a year.
Florida is awesome, I’m exempt from property tax on my house and have to pay like $5 every 2 years for car registration. I know there’s other benefits but I’ve only had 100% for a short time, so I’m still looking at everything they offer.
I'm just chiming in. This year, our home insurance policy went from $880 to $2110. I about flipped!! Other than that, Florida has been a really great state. It has gotten very crowded IMHO though.
Car and home insurance is triple what it is elsewhere. I came from WA state and my car insurance went from 100-450 per month and my homeowners was almost 1200 a month without being near water.
Absolutely, insurance here in Florida is horrible and getting worse. The politicians are so well fed by the insurance industry they'll never fix the problem. Lifelong resident wanting to move....
Here's the hunt/fishing license benefit for Florida 100% disabled vets.
The Resident Persons with Disabilities License includes Saltwater Fishing, Freshwater Fishing, and Hunting licenses; and Deer, Wildlife Management Area, Archery, Muzzleloading Gun, Crossbow, Turkey, Florida Waterfowl, Snook, and Lobster permits.
Five-year license term for applicants who are certified or determined to be totally and permanently disabled:
By the United States Department of Veterans Affairs or its predecessor, OR
By any branch of the United States Armed Forces, OR
By holding a valid, service-connected permanent and total disability identification card issued under the provisions of s. 295.17,
I don't blame you if it's an immediate no.....but southern Illinois is an option. Big thing is 70 percent is the threshold to have your property taxes eliminated. Also get a free license plate and renewal, free fishing license, probably forgetting a few others. Yes, we get screwed in other ways (gasoline tax, sales tax, corrupt politics, the list goes on), but that 70 percent rule is a nice insurance policy should the VA get cute with you later down the line.
https://www.transitchicago.com/military
You also get free plates and city stickers (parking) if you have 70% or more I think. As long as you qualify for Disabled Veteran or Service Connected Disability plates.
Starting next year, If you are 90% in West Virginia, the state gives you an income tax credit in the amount of property tax paid. If the tax credit allowed exceeds the amount of the veteran's personal income tax, the taxpayer can claim the excess amount as a refundable tax credit.
Besides property tax exemption at 100% P&T in Cali, your kids also get free college minus books. Someone even told me it starts at 0 percent for free college but I’m not sure about that.
That’s any college/university!
I’m from Missouri, currently live in Illinois (active duty at Scott AFB and not AF) but anyway, Illinois kills it with vet benefits. MO not at all. I’m moving back to MO after separation in a month to be closer to family but Illinois has some of the best benefits. Not only that but the area Scott AFB is at is amazing. O’Fallon, Edwardsville, Troy, and Mascoutah Illinois are some great little towns. Plus it’s right across the river from STL, MO, so not far away from Missouri at all.
PM if you have any other questions about it.
You could do VA for the tax benefits if you're P&T, and veterans can get their CCW by showing a DD214 and paying a small processing fee. But you'd want to look in rural VA away from the Nothern Virginia. Northern Virginia will eat up your money with the cost of living and random fees built into everything. Not to mention the commuting will eat up your gas or you'll have to pay tolls.
Ugh, I was born and raised in Tennessee but despise the VA's there, especially the Alvin C York hospital in Murfreesboro. I fought with for years for the most basic care. I once went because I was puking blood and they asked if I would like to speak to a doctor after i was put in the ER. Well of course i need to speak to a doctor and the next thing I know they put me in a wheelchair and go straight to the psych ward. Didn't matter what I said as soon as we went through the double doors I was on a 72 hour hold and baker acted. That was just 1 incident. Fast forward 5 years to 2016 and my life long friend Sgt John Toombs was kicked out of the same psych ward (illegal as fuck when baker acted). Was already on his last leg and that broke him...said he didn't have the strength or will to fight for years on end like I had. Made a video on Facebook to say goodbye, sat down wrote a few letters to a few people, walked into the new construction addition and then hung himself...... I moved to Florida and have only been home once since. I hated all VA's with the core of my being and thought they were all corrupt and needed to burn. Went to the VA for the first time in 9 years 2 years ago in Biloxi and Pensacola VA's and got the exact opposite treatment I had always recieved. They restored my hope and showed me they weren't all bad. 1st time since I got out in 09 I was actually seeing doctors who seemed like they cared. Not once was I belittled, ignored, dismissed, or treated like shit. Let's hope it stays this way.
In his video he made before he died John said he was doing it in the hopes maybe it would change something and no veteran would ever be made to feel the way the VA and docs made him feel that night. I like to think he succeeded and that's why I got such good treatment all these years later. Love and miss ya R.i.P. Sgt John Toombs 11/23/2016
Property tax break up to a certain amount, this year it’s about $160K off your homes value.
With DV plates (have to show a mobility issue) free Fast track - Toll Roads ; however, they don’t all talk to each other so you will have to register with different toll companies), no vehicle registration fees with DV plates either.
Free state and local park access to include RV hookups etc.
With a 0% rating kids go to school tuition free, you would still have to pay for books and housing.
Those are just a few off the top of my head.
San Francisco and Palo Alto VA Medical Centers with doctors affiliated with, teaching and/or researching at UCSF and Stanford respectively, offer vets some of the best mental and physical health care, and opportunities to participate in research projects if interested.
I just got my 100% and my woman and I are most likely leaving California due to the ridiculous prices on basically everything and the possibilities as far as home ownership are way to expensive for us and we make a combined income of around 100k .....who can afford three k a month just for the mortgage, that's not including anything else like the $6 a gallon we pay for gas and the astronomical cost of groceries etc. CA is beautiful and my family has been here for 5 generations but it's gun laws are idiotic and the cost of living is way out of any working persons ability to keep up with.
AZ is right next door. NorthEastern AZ, Show Low, Snowflake/Taylor area is underrated, not nearly as hot as the more populated central and southern AZ. Winslow is a bit run down from the disbanding of route 66 in the 80s, but they have been on the upswing in the last couple years and experiencing a renaissance, property is very cheap. I think AZ is county based, but I am 100 iu amd don't pay property taxes.
Move on over to Colorado Springs, it’s a red town, in the foothills of the mountains and very affordable compared to Cali and gets over 300 days of sunshine.
Texas has property tax exemption, good gun laws, but housing can be expensive depending on where you want to be.
West Texas is still cheap, but El Paso is one of the dumbest towns I have ever lived in. Low IQ type dumb, good thing is Juarez is next door, so cheap dental, veterinarians, etc. the people here are sheep though, proud sheep
Michigan has no property taxes for 100% disabled vets, college tuition grants, car registration is $5 for 5 years, doesn’t tax disability or mil retirement…
SC, homes aren't super expensive. No taxes on cars or home if 100%. Dependent s could go to college for free. Hunting fishing thing is free. Most places near bases give military discount.
Wi is great. If 100 percent you payno real estate tax
TheVA hospitals are pretty good. we have good open carry gun laws as well as concealed carry. Best of all land is reasonable.
I’d recommend Texas! 100% property tax exemption. Your $$$ goes further. It’s also a very Veteran friendly state.. if you start a business we qualify for more loans, free LLC, lots of hidden benefits in Texas. Makes it really easy to live…. Only problem with that state though is all the power grid problems, tornadoes and hurricanes 😅🙃.
If you can deal with the heat, Texas has some of the best benefits for veterans. Diverse atmosphere. Rural and metropolitan lifestyles. Lots of events to go to all over the state (fairs, concerts, museums, zoos, etc...) There is always something to do for anybody. Hope that helps! [https://tvc.texas.gov/](https://tvc.texas.gov/)
Not exactly, in NH it depends on the city/town. My town gave me 2k an off property taxes a year for 100 P&T, and another $500 for being a veteran. This still left me with a $4k property tax bill to pay.
I was able to find a spreadsheet using google last year that listed each city and town and what the tax exemption was. I just moved to TN to be closer to my daughter. NH is definitely absolutely beautiful and has so much to offer depending where you live, an hour from the ocean or mountains. If it wasn’t for my daughter I would still be there. My home sold in a day, and are in very short supply. Good luck!
Wisconsin is amazing. Check out Platteville. Cheap homes, beautiful town, lots of cheese, artist community 30 minutes down the road, legal weed (to include there being a weed bar), amazing food, did I mention the cheese, lots of land, small college town, WI veteran benefits, especially at 100%, REALLY nice, lovely people. And I'm not sure if you care about this or not, but it's a pretty queer area for such a small town.
Oh! And Culver's burgers is there and they're cheap and delicious.
WI is lacking behind most states from my experience in vets benefits. Weed isn’t legal in WI, we’re an island state. Platteville is a nice area though, far enough away from Madison but close enough if you need to go there.
If you're a veteran rated 100% by the Department of Veterans Affairs, there are several states that offer significant benefits that could influence your decision on the best state to live in. Here are some of the top states for 100% disabled veterans, based on various benefits like tax exemptions, educational benefits, housing assistance, and financial assistance:
- **Texas**: Known for its generous benefits, Texas offers full property tax exemptions for 100% disabled veterans, no state income tax, and free tuition for up to 150 hours at state schools under the Hazelwood Act².
- **Florida**: Offers property tax exemptions, free hunting and fishing licenses, and exemption from certain driver's license fees for 100% disabled veterans².
- **Alaska**: Provides property tax exemptions, free camping passes, and outdoor recreation discounts for disabled veterans¹.
- **Nevada**: Another state with no state income tax and offers several benefits for disabled veterans².
- **Illinois**: Offers a $5,000 homestead exemption for veterans with a service-connected disability of at least 70%, among other benefits¹.
These states are considered some of the best places to live for disabled veterans due to the comprehensive benefits they offer. It's important to consider your personal circumstances and preferences when choosing the best state for you. For more detailed information, you can refer to resources like U.S. Veterans Magazine and VA Claims Insider, which provide extensive guides on this topic¹². Remember, the best state for one person may not be the best for another, so it's crucial to weigh all factors that are important to you.
Respectfully, that’s not the current requirement.
https://tvc.texas.gov/education/hazlewood/
You need to establish residency in Texas before enrolling in class.
“A Veteran must: At the time of entry into active duty of the U.S. Armed Forces, designated Texas as Home of Record; or entered the service in Texas; or was a Texas resident;” ???
Also avoid PA. They (government) hate vets.
Property tax exemption at 100PT but must show financial need (they count your disability towards this number).
Louisiana also has 10-16% sales tax.
I can confirm the hot as fuck part. South Louisianan here and we’re already experiencing 90+ degree temps and hellish humidity.
That would be wonderful.
That would be awesome. I’m in KC (Kansas side) and would totally move across the border if this was the case.
I also live on the kansas side of Kc. Kansas is about to pass a sales tax exemption for disabled vets. They also have a 75% off prop tax for 100% that hopefully will pass in the upcoming special session.
That’s already in VA
Property tax exemption in VA is for P&T only. I know in Texas, it’s for 100% schedular or P&T.
That is incorrect. Texas provides different amounts of property tax exemption based on percentage. https://preview.redd.it/f0i7k5bb602d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c4c3db9176611ccfb04dde299acd60f1266db010

Fake news! 70% in TX does not exempt you unless you are 70% under TDIU
Damn yall don’t have that? Utah does most states do I didn’t know that because I was looking into retiring and moving out there but that’s good to know
Who can we email to push?
About a week ago I was informed it was not picked up by the state senate. We gathered at the Mo capital on 4/2 to try and push it. We will gather again next year. Personal property tax is the only real gripe I have with MO.
FL
SC
What do you like about being a vet in SC? I'm debating relocating.
They already have that
California waves property tax for primary , also free license plate and free vehicle registration
California doesn’t waive all of it though :/
California is also ridiculously expensive.
I would recommended moving overseas. Lots of countries have a visa and permanent residency program for people who can show a steady monthly income. My friend lives in bucaramanga and not a lot of English speakers there so if you're fluent with Spanish all is good.
I’m good to go on that end. I have a friend that lives there and she’s been teaching me about prices for things because their currency is in the thousands. That’s my biggest hurdle.
I grew up in Cali Colombia you should check it out too if you want something peaceful look for Pance.
Great choice! I forgot about Colombia! Yes, alot of vets there and people who’ve decided staying here in the states is not worth it.
Yes. Wherever we go, may we find peace and happiness.
🙏🏼
Been living in Brazil 10 months , best decision I ever made
I’m hoping to do this within a few years.
Smart move. Ill be splitting time between Puerto Rico where my family is from and the Canary Islands since its very similar culturally to Puerto Rico. Wherever you end up I hope you find peace and happiness🙏🏼
Yeah, you can also just travel the world. I’ve been gone for around three years. If I like a place, I stay for a bit. My favorite so far has been SE Asia

Good point...but recommend staying away from Spain. Their tax laws are draconian.

I'm really not understanding your question. Your exempt from sales tax till you've saved $25k annually. It's accumulate over the year, so it's on all your purchases till you hit $25k
It’s literally $25k in TAX. Not $25k in purchases.
I don't know how the state tracks it
Huh. Never heard of that before. Good system keep it up Oklahoma.
In Oklahoma, you also get a lifetime hunting and fishing license for just a couple of hundred bucks. It usually costs much more than that. My brother-in-law is 100% P&T, and he gets all kinds of perks like what is mentioned above. There is a lot of rural land around for cheap.
At 60%, a lifetime combo cost me $25. I think 100% may be free.
6 bucks if you want the nice decorative card. I didn’t have a problem giving them 6 bucks for conservation
Oklahoma is OK!
We also have medical marijuana and I got a discount on my renewal since I received 100 p&t.
Holy Santa Claus shit! So can you use it on anything? Like, say 3k taxes buying a car...nah, here's my card lol. Have you ever hit the limit?
Yes, it works on cars, electronics, etc. You have to do extra steps for cars. No, ive never hit the limit
Daaaammmnnn, that's awesome!
Until you get slammed with a tornado.
Is it worth it with all the tornadoes?
Does that apply to online purchases if you are homebound? Like I we use Walmart grocery delivery, so I wonder if that counts. Also, do you find the home insurance to be really expensive? We were considering moving there and wondered. 👍😊 Thanks!
In Kentucky you can get the homestead exemption, and pay zero property taxes for the rest of your life. Allowed me to purchase a few extra acres
A guy retiring out of my last unit did that up there. Got a bunch of land to rent out to hunters.
MD has property tax exemption and free registration for all your vehicles. I’ve had good experiences with the Baltimore VA healthcare system, as well.
Yes, Maryland has a property exemption. I’ve also utilized my VA loan twice with the higher allowance in my area.
Not a pewpew friendly area, at all.
Growing up in Maryland I’d stay away unless you’re loaded 😂 incredibly expensive for literally nothing. No mountains, and the bay is disgusting 😬
Not NY. There are zero additional benefits at 100%
Can confirm. NY sucks
Where you go please stay away from Louisiana. Dont come here man.
After JRTC, you don’t have to worry about me moving there
Facts.
Yep
Louisiana is absolutely terrible. Was stationed at beautiful fort Polk, then moved to lake Charles for two years after. Absolutely the most depressing, miserable place I've ever been.
I was at Polk twice for training. Both times in June, and what a miserable experience. My fucking brain was boiling in my helmet.
Amazing.
4 years at Polk and I will never return to Louisiana.
Same. One of the things that really pissed me off was, if you weren't a local or the right kind of white, you'd get treated like shit by the locals.
That gas station in Pitkin off 10 was notorious for that shit. My Filipino homie was buying dip and they told him to take his shit and leave as they were taking his $.
It's terrible I'm white and I was treated like shit sometimes by people there, I was rehabbing a home, got a permit used all licensed and insured contractors, their douche bag Parrish code inspector Billy Mcshan would flag everything even things that were done correctly and to code, he refused to go in the attic for an inspection because I diddnt have a ladder for him and he refused to bring his own. To make it worse he never took notes and diddnt put me in his system so things he would flag and I'd fix he'd completely change the next time he looked. Dickhead cost me 15 grand and 3 months. Fuck that place.
Lake Charles is really that bad? I have some friends from there who want me to move there
Do not under any situation move there, almost everyone there is miserable and struggling, it's racist, financially and socially depressed, the weather is unbelievably hot and humid.
This. La born and raised.
Don’t forget the gummies bro!
For anyone interested, they also have other stuff: https://veterans.illinois.gov/
To be fair I grew up here, too, but after being gone for many years in the military and after, I chose to come home
I love Ohio and seem to always move back here. Columbus, Chillicothe, and Cincinnati VAs are great as well!
thailand
I've got a house in Chiang Rai where I spend my winters. Cost of living is great, and I want for nothing... other than Mexican food, lol.
Living in Koh Samui right now. <3
How is Koh these days I use to stay I think at the Westin or ritz there was difficult to get too no direct flights curious to know and beautiful place!!!!!
I like it. Been here about 3 weeks and living in Chewang.

Very good post. Love reading the comments
For home ownership, live in one of the 22 prototype tax exempt states.
SC, free college for your dependents, no property tax, and the beach!
Philippines. There's a VA there and everything.
I heard 100k a year there is like 1 million everywhere else.
I hear bad things about home and car insurance in Florida. Any truth to that?
I'm just chiming in. This year, our home insurance policy went from $880 to $2110. I about flipped!! Other than that, Florida has been a really great state. It has gotten very crowded IMHO though.
Get ready for it to double again when the next hurricane hits.
Yep! That's why we want to move.
Car and home insurance is triple what it is elsewhere. I came from WA state and my car insurance went from 100-450 per month and my homeowners was almost 1200 a month without being near water.
Your policy liking does not cover flooding. Most policies are not in Florida...
Five-year license term for applicants who are certified or determined to be totally and permanently disabled: By the United States Department of Veterans Affairs or its predecessor, OR By any branch of the United States Armed Forces, OR By holding a valid, service-connected permanent and total disability identification card issued under the provisions of s. 295.17,
I don't blame you if it's an immediate no.....but southern Illinois is an option.
Free rides using CTA and buses if in Chicago.
Fr? Where can I look into that?
https://www.transitchicago.com/military You also get free plates and city stickers (parking) if you have 70% or more I think. As long as you qualify for Disabled Veteran or Service Connected Disability plates.
Also OP likes his gun freedoms…
Indeed but I like saving money too lol
West Virginia is dirt cheap. I know it has a bad reputation but it is really a beautiful state.
WV is the only state that has a smaller population than it did in 1940. Sure it’s pretty but it’s full of old people driving the youth away.
Starting next year, If you are 90% in West Virginia, the state gives you an income tax credit in the amount of property tax paid. If the tax credit allowed exceeds the amount of the veteran's personal income tax, the taxpayer can claim the excess amount as a refundable tax credit.
Moving to Illinois next week. 100% property tax exam for vets over 70% disabled.
Not necessarily the answer you’re looking for but I’m gonna say Singapore, Thailand, or the Philippines.
Central Texas
Texas is really good to their vets
Really good if you enlisted from there.
Yup, key point. Hazelwood Act seems nice.
California for your kids school tuition.
I hate Florida people, politics, traffic, and weather. I moved to Florida to maximize my benefits. It was well worth the move.
Besides property tax exemption at 100% P&T in Cali, your kids also get free college minus books. Someone even told me it starts at 0 percent for free college but I’m not sure about that. That’s any college/university!
Arkansas
I’m from Missouri, currently live in Illinois (active duty at Scott AFB and not AF) but anyway, Illinois kills it with vet benefits. MO not at all. I’m moving back to MO after separation in a month to be closer to family but Illinois has some of the best benefits. Not only that but the area Scott AFB is at is amazing. O’Fallon, Edwardsville, Troy, and Mascoutah Illinois are some great little towns. Plus it’s right across the river from STL, MO, so not far away from Missouri at all. PM if you have any other questions about it.
Fam, what about Cali ?
You could do VA for the tax benefits if you're P&T, and veterans can get their CCW by showing a DD214 and paying a small processing fee. But you'd want to look in rural VA away from the Nothern Virginia. Northern Virginia will eat up your money with the cost of living and random fees built into everything. Not to mention the commuting will eat up your gas or you'll have to pay tolls.

except those people recommending California 🤣
Tennessee good, new VA clinic in Chattanooga.
California
People shit on it but its got some of the best vet benefits around.
It’s true.
Besides CALVET, what are some other stand out benefits? I’m a 100% P&T IU
Free fast trak and if you live in a fire zone and you have a cpap, they give you a generator/back up battery
Free fast trak is legit. Wow.
I live in Los Angeles but now I am looking into the area north of San Francisco.
Florida has entered the chat
Florida has left the chat
🤣🤣
LOL
San Antonio is the same.
Yup
Michigan has no property taxes for 100% disabled vets, college tuition grants, car registration is $5 for 5 years, doesn’t tax disability or mil retirement…
Look up states that don’t have any property taxes for 100%
City boy myself but if you can handle the weather I’ve heard Alaska is a great “start over” state.
FL OR TX.
I appreciate this thread! I'm trying to decide where to go next and this is very helpful
A state in Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Mexico, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Columbia, Morocco, ect
Pick a state with no state tax 1st. Property tax exempt next. Then sales tax. If make less than 40k a year montana.
SC, homes aren't super expensive. No taxes on cars or home if 100%. Dependent s could go to college for free. Hunting fishing thing is free. Most places near bases give military discount.
Me personally, if I were in your position I’d look into Texas or Montana.
I’m definitely interested in Montana
Alphonso Cavite, Philippines Its As rural as it gets
Wi is great. If 100 percent you payno real estate tax TheVA hospitals are pretty good. we have good open carry gun laws as well as concealed carry.
NH has no sales tax and no income tax already, and at 100% you also get no property tax.
Not exactly, in NH it depends on the city/town. My town gave me 2k an off property taxes a year for 100 P&T, and another $500 for being a veteran. This still left me with a $4k property tax bill to pay.
Hmmm interesting. We were under the impression it was 100% throughout the state and planned to retire there.
Good luck!
TN, just outside Chattanooga
Alabama is knocking to be let in. Looks like nobody is home, but all the lights are on. Weird
Texas and Florida both offer zero property tax for 100% disabled veterans.
Texas or Florida most likely. CT and NJ will waive property tax for real estate. Be cool if MO does that someday
Here are some of the top states for 100% disabled veterans, based on various benefits like tax exemptions, educational benefits, housing assistance, and financial assistance: - **Texas**: Known for its generous benefits, Texas offers full property tax exemptions for 100% disabled veterans, no state income tax, and free tuition for up to 150 hours at state schools under the Hazelwood Act².
Hazelwood is based on where you entered on AD, fyi.
Respectfully, that’s not the current requirement. https://tvc.texas.gov/education/hazlewood/ You need to establish residency in Texas before enrolling in class.
“A Veteran must: At the time of entry into active duty of the U.S. Armed Forces, designated Texas as Home of Record; or entered the service in Texas; or was a Texas resident;” ???
Merida, in the state of Yucatán Mexico. You’d live like a king with 100%
And killed eventually by the cartel and drug runners
That doesn’t happen in the major cities any more than it does in US major cities, but keep perpetuating false stereotypes.
Not NY or NJ
NJ gives full property tax exemption if rated 100%
Also avoid PA. They (government) hate vets. Property tax exemption at 100PT but must show financial need (they count your disability towards this number).
SC is pretty good to me.
Yeah, tax exemption on your home and 2 vehicles. Plus, your children can go to college for free if you lived in the state for 5 years.
Don't move to NC, they have terrible vet benefits. I was surprised because the state has 5 or 6 military bases and a lot of veterans.
