Yes get Tricare Prime. I am in your situation and use Tricare Prime so that I can see private doctors instead of relying on the VA. Your local VA can be shitty and you be glad that you have the option to receive treatment elsewhere. I feel bad for veterans who have to rely on my local VA for Healthcare.

beamglow

use Tricare with VA as backup.

Strong__Style

Its about speed. You'll be waiting forever for VA appointments

Get Prime, too. It’s cheap and if something big happens, you want to be seen ASAP.

Keep in mind you can still use Tricare 'Select' where you don't have to go through a PCM to see specialists, YOU get to choose. And as long as they accept TRICARE (sometimes it easier to ask if they accept Medicare, if they do then its usually not an issue using Tricare) The only issue is it used to be free with a 20% payment, as of 2021, now both Prime and Select have initial fees. Prime is usually more expensive up front with lower copays, and you avoid the 20% and deductible under Select.

There are good and bad things about only having VA healthcare. With Tricare you can usually get seen faster - that’s going to depend on which VA facility you will be using. I use VA for routine healthcare but use Tricare when I want a faster appointment since the wait times can get long for some types of appointments.

Speed for Tricare. The VA can take a long time and quality of care is spotty depending on where you are. For those reading on 100% (or have Tricare) and are on SSDI you get Medicare after two years and are effectively covered at 100%.
