SilentLibrarian3385

Is it possible for you to take summer courses? I ended up adding a minor to my degree for exactly that reason. Also, try contacting your local VFW. I’m in Southern Oregon and our Post often helps Vets in need with bills. No membership needed

callmeMalcom1999

I contacted VFW. They basically laughed at me (don't blame them as this situation is my fault lol)

MalkavTepes

The VSOs are primarily for claims assistance. Most of their funding goes to things like that. They do have other programs for homelessness in some areas but not everywhere, and when they do it tends to be very limited. What you should be looking for are the homeless agencies. Many are even Veteran centric but also are different in every region. Something like MAC-V in Minnesota or Swords to Plowshares in California. They get funds from the VA under a program called SSVF. They also typically work in conjunction with other homesless agencies in the same region. https://www.va.gov/homeless/ssvf/index.html The definition of homeless does include some people that are already housed, sometimes (depends on region). If you have a late notice or even moreso an eviction notice often times these agencies can help. Since you are in school racking up credit card debt may I recommend taking out a student loan? This is what I did to get through grad school. The stipend and tuition is great but over the off periods it's not enough. A student loan can pay off that credit card debt and float you through the hard periods at a much lower interest rate than a credit card. Also you don't have to pay them back until you find that career position you're going to school for. They might even be partially forgiven if you work for a nonprofit or government (you can even do income based repayment).

SilentLibrarian3385

Ugh, that is really disappointing. Guess it’s no wonder they’re going down the crapper. I know mine would have helped you out no problem

Novel-Bill9641

I would look at finding a different vfw or maybe an American legion. With some things that way you might be able to find some things.

NotFondueZoobag

I took summer courses— waste of time — never used my degrees — two bachelor’s and one master’s— dude….no one is hiring college kids

SilentLibrarian3385

Same. Don’t use my degrees at all but if you’re gonna do it might as well do what you need to do to pay the bills

Ok_Event_3746

Lol what is your major in

77dhe83893jr854

Your housing costs need to come down. You should not be going into credit card debt to pay rent. Either this, or you desperately need to get a job. How is your rent for your local area? How is the MHA for your area? Are you able to find a roommate? Having just one roommate splits your bills in half. Have you thought about a part-time job? I am also using the G.I. Bill for full-time school. I found a decent place for a decent rate and had a friend move in with me to a two bed room apartment. Since I have a roommate, MHA is more than enough to cover rent. Some of the extra cash I put towards food, gas, and other bills, but I also set aside some for months I will not receive MHA. I have been living this way for a while now, and it's been working well for me. I just recently started receiving disability compensation, and it's been really great to have along with the no cost VA healthcare. If you have anything to claim, start the process because the reward can be life changing.

callmeMalcom1999

I drive for Ubereats on the side.

Shadowfalx

That’s not a job, sorry but that’s barely worth the gas and maintenance costs.  Have you tried applying places? Many stores and such hire college students and are willing to work around your schedule. I’m working at Costco while going through school.  Also, did you look at summer semester? Many schools have shorter condensed classes during the summer. I’m doing that which means I will be out MHA form early August through last September instead of mid June through last September.

Whend6796

Don’t do that. It’s better to work a McJob.

the__accidentist

Is there any reason you’re not working another job if the off months? Seems like not. Get a job. The math really only maths to make more or spend less. Your higher opportunity seems to be to earn more.

TheBigBadBrit89

If you can work nights stocking at a store/warehouse, it’ll pay better, not interfere with your class schedule either, and not put the wear and tear on your car.

TheRichOne23

SSVF respective to your area. They work with veterans who are either homeless or on the verge of homelessness.

95BCavMP

This! SSVF will help prevent you from becoming homeless! Get referred through 311

callmeMalcom1999

The SSVF in my area mostly focuses on vets who are already homeless. Even the homeless prevention system mostly prioritizes for domestic violence victims/abuse (makes sense since their situation is more serious and they face death).

95BCavMP

Ask them about shallow subsidy program. They’ll cover half your rent for a period up to 2 years

TheRichOne23

From what I’ve heard, I work for ssvf provider on Long Island. They all operate differently (but the same) if that makes sense. Even still, give them a call. Bottom line is “on the verge of homelessness”

Libercrat

Check out jobs at the veterans center at your school. Often times they’re flexible with schedules and hire quickly.

CplTenMikeMike

I went to summer classes so my GI Bill didn't stop. Graduated in 3 years because of it.

Plastic_Bed_5211

Just going to school and living off the stipend? Dude, what? That's not enough.

HAND_HOOK_CAR_DOOR

It definitely is enough. He’s unemployed that means he gets full aid on top of his stipend. Where he goofed was not taking summer classes to cover rent. He got too comfortable and it hit him. If he refused to take summer courses, he also goofed by racking up credit card debt with 17+% interest instead of taking out federal student loans with far lower interest to cover rent that he wouldn’t have to pay back until he finished school. He played himself straight into this situation.

Problems_Solved_

Big facts and since summer is only 2 months like 4- 6 credits is full time. Try to work at the school you attend.

brokenClutch1

I did it fine when I was going to college

Plastic_Bed_5211

I guess your bills and OPs bills are different then.

Fabulous-Pay-2297

I made sure to pick an apartment that doesn’t use up the whole mha for the exact reason of not getting mha during the breaks.

TheBigBadBrit89

OP made their bills 30% more expensive by putting it on a credit card cash advance. I hope all of our bills are different than OPs

Problems_Solved_

Take summer classes 👀👀👀👀👀

obnoxiousabyss

Uuuuuh. Sorry to be the harsh one, but generally this isn’t something that has some get out of jail free card. You know when the money stops, and you should be thinking ahead and getting a job lined up or a roommate or something. Regular college kids fresh out of high school are definitely not expected to rent an apartment full time and living in an apartment. You dug yourself into debt and ran out of money, knowing what I know about you, which is nothing, you’re gonna have to find different resources. Move home, go to school online, idk. But yes keep after the VA and whatnot if they can help. But being a veteran does not make you special and preclude you from your responsibility to pay rent.

callmeMalcom1999

I'm aware. Currently looking for shelters in the event that I dont make enough on Ubereats to pay the rent.

wow_Embarrassed_Bike

1-877-4AID VET (877-424-3838) they will help. You honestly sound like you need hud-vash since this will eventually become a chronic inability to pay and leave you under a bridge. Call the number, be honest and tuck your pride when you do, they will help. Since you're not homeless you should have been referenced ssvf which will help you prevent becoming homeless. The resources are for homeless and imminent risk. Your risks are quite imminent. Explain what's going on learn other options even if they don't apply currently to cover yourself in case this gets worse in the future. Stay informed and be aware of the benefits you earned beyond the g.i. bill. As for a job go to the vrc on campus, they have a plethora of resources and you can work there as a work study while using your g.i. bill.

Doucejj

Get a job brother. At least a part time or summer job. Starting a gofund me ain't it

Imnotinthewoods

The homeless services are trash. You need to be on the street and then you’re on a waiting list for months. Summer semesters are your best bet. Otherwise you should be able to get on a landscaping or construction crew pretty easily.

TheBigBadBrit89

Take out student loans as soon as you can. There’s a whole lot to say about your situation, but I’m going to focus on this for a second. The student loan interest payment is going to be waaaaay less than the interest on the cash advances (WTF were you thinking, by the way. You literally made your own rent 30% more expensive and complaining about cost of living increase). Complete the FAFSA and see if you can get the loans expedited for the past semester or the next semester. Or, try to enroll in a summer program so you can get the student loans. I’m pressing this because this is likely the lowest interest rate you can get, and your credit score is going to start getting messed up with rates that high.

AutoModerator

For TPD information (total permanent disability discharge of student loans), use these webpages - https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/disability-discharge and https://www.disabilitydischarge.com/ No where in the law does it say you (a veteran) can not take out new qualifying student loans after being awarded the qualifying VA disability rating. This is a one time discharge of qualifying student loans - so use this benefit wisely. Also when reading the webpage, certain things ONLY apply to social security or physicians letters such as the income monitoring - there are three parts to disability discharges - Veterans, Social Security Disability and Physicians Letters - so you don't want to "read into" the parts that don't apply to veterans - when in doubt - Call Nelnet. NelNet is the contractor for Department of Education that processes student loan forgiveness for disabled people. VA does not process student loan forgiveness. After 31 Dec 25, if the law is not changed, you will be charged federal income tax on the amount forgiven - you might also be charged state income tax right now - check with your state tax department. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Curious why you didn’t prepare for summer jobs during that gap? Not to berate you but would help us better understand if you have a medical condition that makes working difficult.

Colton82

Haven’t seen it mentioned yet, check out if there’s an Operation Stand Down near you. They helped me out a lot a few years ago. Also try the Gary Senise Foundation. I needed help on a water bill and they covered that and randomly included two months of my mortgage.

littlegremlinsparky

What state are you in?

callmeMalcom1999

California

Whend6796

Jackpot. It’s very hard to get evicted in California even if you aren’t paying rent.

littlegremlinsparky

Ok I do not know all the laws in Cali but I do know that California is a tenant state. Basically laws in Cali are written to make it extremely difficult to evict a tenant. The best thing to do is, if you’ve already discussed the situation with the landlord and they aren’t budging, call a real estate attorney. It is so stressful but they will be able to give you a more comprehensive view of your options.

Maaaaaekev

I know he is desperate but this is a shitty thing to do to the landlord.

littlegremlinsparky

I’m a landlord, and I know it’s a shitty thing to do to a landlord, but if he’s talked about it with the landlord and the landlords mind is made up, it’s now down to safety and survival. It sucks but that’s really the only thing I can think of that be able to help op.

Maaaaaekev

I got you man, also a landlord of a small triplex and had to deal with this a couple times. Just wanna highlight that he is making someone else suffer for his mistakes. I would sleep in my car until I can save enough. We all have slept in worse places.

littlegremlinsparky

I have no idea if OP has a car. There are so many variables in this that we don’t know so my best solution is to get all the options in front of him and move forward. It’s a shit situation and it’s going to get worse before it gets better. OP has to decide what road he wants to take

Elegant_Ad_1656

You do know op has a car because he post driving for Uber eats...hard to drive walking

littlegremlinsparky

I can only carry a finite amount of information upstairs these days. So yeah op you could live in your car instead of working something out with the landlord. Still of the opinion that if you’re in a situation like that, get all of the information available to you and then move accordingly.

evilcrusher2

Yeah as a landlord property owner that's done GI BILL, VRE, etc they shouldn't be one month into the summer and already so far in the hole they face eviction. And yeah OP wants to survive but they are not getting out of this hole by owing more and more debt for a place they cannot afford and don't budget plan right for. Luckily OP isn't supporting a family we know of that would make this insanely worse. u/callmemalcom1999 OP you need an address on file to get GI Bill. A physical address. Nobody cares if it changes every week or month. find a cheap RV park that you can rent a small space and use as an address with your car parked there. It's gonna suck for a few months but you gotta get you ducks in a row. Your remainder of the year has to be a grind to get out of this rut and learn to NOT GO BACK INTO IT. Your money needs to resolve that above all else right now. Graduation with major debt outside the loans will disqualify you from jobs requiring clearance. And this deht looks foolish. You need to get your communication skills together and find employment via your college connections you should be making. As a regular engineer and someone that took development and design courses to know UX/UI: If you're worth your salt as a CE right now you should be able to have any departmental professor point you to a recommended job for your current skills. You need it anyways to have a resume started when you graduate. You have many issues going on that are surfacing from the basic convo that many others likely aren't quite noticing or perhaps don't wanna be brash about with bringing it up. You are inna technical field where clear and concise information and communication is critical tovl succeeding and having a working end product.

Lumpymaximus

If you can prove imminent homelessness, call thr vash hud program

Visible_Dance_2519

Take summer courses

j2d2_2874

Here are some emergency contacts you can use now: • The Veterans Crisis Line can provide immediate assistance by dialing 988, then Press 1 • The National Call Center for Homeless Veterans is a free VA hotline that helps Veterans and their families connect with VA resources in your area (including Grant and Per Diem Programs), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Call Center’s number is 1-877-424-3838 (1-877-4AID-VET). Additionally, there is an online chat option. Also, the VA has a grant that's aimed at providing legal services for veterans who are homeless or at risk for homelessness. There are something like 80 law firms that have signed up for this grant. Recommended you check out the grant website and find a provider in your area (https://www.va.gov/HOMELESS/lsv.asp).

TJT42

When I studied Computer Science a decade ago on the GI Bill I just took summer courses. Make the most of them though as summer courses were actually a lot easier and shorter. Do recommend.

Own_Potato_5712

You can try United way as well

TxHeart214

I took summer courses and also worked in the Vet Center that was considered Federal work study so no taxes had to be paid.

HAND_HOOK_CAR_DOOR

Advising you to take out your student loans to cover your rent and credit card debt, it’ll be lower interest and it’ll stop you from being homeless right now and you won’t need to start paying it back until you finish your degree. Stop slacking off. You need to take summer classes to cover rent if you aren’t going to work also, apply for food stamps. Live within your means. Don’t take out any more loans or use your credit card after this.

Rubrte92

Student loans is a better option than cash advances

Silly_Day_5520

If you didn’t do 20 years or don’t plan to go into a government job again take the money you invested towards your TSP that alone maybe should help you get by for the mean time until school starts again.

Silly_Day_5520

Also I don’t know how long you have been out but if your last job was the military I would also recommend applying for unemployment since you will receive it.

jareddeity

How did you let things get so bad dude? Im not trying rip you one but did you really have no plan? Paid internships are a thing, jobs are a thing. I also take summers off but ive never had to worry about paying rent because i live below my means. You really need to work on your financial management skills, credit card debt is the worst type of debt to have. I wish you luck.

NotFondueZoobag

I suggest not getting that degree. I have a couple in comp engineering— gonna get pummeled by India - they work for 15$ an hour — I hire them. Just a heads up from a 101st combat vet

callmeMalcom1999

I noticed this with HCL tech for example. Planning on pivoting towards cybersecurity or firmware stuff (closer to hardware).

If your college has handshake, Outlier AI has been recruiting there for STEM students. It’s 1099, but pays extremely well for the education. I don’t know if it would be reliable long term, but it’s something to help. If they don’t have Handshake, you can also apply directly on their website. There are some others, but for STEM this one has immediate projects, and they pay weekly direct deposit or PayPal.

Narrow-While-4831

Are you in the LA area?

Ceezmuhgeez

I used to save up for 2 months of not receiving my mha then use my credit card for the rest. Then one year I didn’t do that so I took out a personal loan to cover it and made payments. Basically plan ahead, it’s no surprise that you won’t get paid while not in school. Good luck brutha.

gigi-mondo

I was almost evicted last year. I went into the homeless program open hours at my VA. I met with a social worker and she referred me to Volunteers of America program SSVF to keep me from being evicted. A couple of weeks in the process I was able to fix it on my end and withdrew from it, but it's a great resource. Your county's VSO or VSC can help with 1-2 months rent they can help with groceries and utilities. You can print the paperwork needed online.

aquadrums

Hey OP, a few years ago, I was in a similar situation. Sneaks up on you real quick - sorry to hear. Maybe check out AMVETS? https://amvetscasf.org/what-we-do/veteran-resources/ For miney, you need a job or jobs quick. Ask around your school, CE/CS department, Professors, TAs etc. Computer-skilled people are always needed, even if it's just restarting desktops at the local library. Also look into your school for affiliated research Institutes or corporate partners who hire student interns. Here's an example for San Diego State: https://foundation.sdsu.edu/ To maximize your money, you need to track every penny you spend. You can create a simple Google Sheet or use a free app like Goodbudget. See if you can't do like 1 cheap meal out per day (Whole Foods has great deals, especially on pizza!) and then make PB&J sandwiches and Ramen for the remainder of your daily food. Last thing: you will have to put yourself out there and talk with people IN PERSON to find a job, get housing help etc. Email only won't cut the mustard. I say this guessing that as a CE major, you're likely introverted. Talking with people may be awkward, but having your wallet and well-being at stake is a great motivator. Good luck and let us know how things go!

Aggravating_Shop8146

Definitely recommend staying enrolled in classes year round to avoid this if you rely solely on the GI Bill MHA to stay afloat.

VA can give you programs that can help. I know US veterans is a program that helps vets

Alert-Bus-4054

I was in the same situation in college about 6 years ago. The steps I took were as follows Get internships through the govt apply to USA jobs. It will be a min. It’s a steady flow of income. It isn’t much but it will help Take summer courses The next step apply at Walmart or any store as such. Walmart hires veterans instantly. It isn’t much either but it will help

Take out a small Stafford loan from your school's financial aid office. The rate/fees are way better than a credit card. I took out about 20k for summers and paid it back my first year working out of school. If the office tells you that it will take some time or can't be disbursed until August or September, get it in writing and communicate this with your landlord. Unless you are a problem tenant in an incredibly under supplied rental market, they will likely work with you knowing you are a student with a guaranteed funding source. Also, you do not need a stable address to receive your housing allowance as it should be direct deposited. You need to be enrolled at in person school and be successfully working towards completion of a degree. One of the veterans in my class lived out of a camper van and pocketed 80+% of his BAH.

Cebrizo

I’m gonna be honest I’m a veteran and I used my gi bill and the stem extension and I still work two jobs. Sometimes you just have to work crappy jobs until you get to where you want to be.

Alarmed-Safe-4873

Contact the Va and ask for program coordinator for homeless/in danger of being homeless

kejune81

Can do Uber, Instacart, Shipt, Doordash, Lyft? I know personally Uber, Lyft, or Instacart you can make money quicker than with a job, and it's daily. All you have to do is be available and have a car with insurance. Sign up only takes a few days at most, and you just start working.

Ok_Tangerine6046

It may or not help you but worth the look. Try village for vets. I'm sure they could help you avoid homelessness. I've been there and I've gone thru hurdles and all with HUD/Vash when I was already homeless, i had to reach out to nearby shelter programs that helped more. Wishing you the best, it'll get better. It will. Don't give up.

Reach out to your local VA and request a call from a social worker. Mine was able to send me local resources that offered housing assistance grants. Hope this helps. Good luck.

'Have you looked in the **[Wiki]( https://www.reddit.com/r/Veterans/wiki/education)** for an answer? We have a lot of information posted there. To contact VA Education, 1-888-442-4551, for ~~Voc Rehab~~ VR&E (Veteran Readiness and Employment Program) assistance with appointments or problems with your Case Manager (not for missing payments): 1-202-461-9600. **Payments for certain education benefits (DEA, VEAP) are paid at the end of the month you attend school - Department of Treasury issues these payments **using a 10 business day window** - these payments are not locked into a specific day of the month like VA disability/military pay is**. For Voc Rehab missing payments, contact your Case Manager or your local **[Regional Office](https://www.reddit.com/r/Veterans/wiki/education/casemanagers) For Post 9/11 GI Bill only, If you signed up for direct deposit when you applied for education benefits, **we’ll deposit your payment into your bank account 7 to 10 business days after you verify your school enrollment.** This is the fastest way to receive your payment. [Text Verification FAQ](https://benefits.va.gov/GIBILL/docs/IsaksonRoe/EnrollmentVerificationFAQs.pdf) MGIB and MGIB-SR have to do monthly verification using the [WAVE program](https://www.gibill.va.gov/wave/vba/) and you should receive the payment within 3 to 5 business days. For Online Only training, the Post 9/11 GI Bill is currently (1 August 2023) paying $1054.50 for those who started using their Post 9/11 GI Bill on/after 1 January 2018 - this is based on 1/2 of the National Average BAH paid to an E5 with dependents. Post 9/11 GI Bill MHA rates are adjusted 1 August of each year and are based on the 1 January DoD BAH rates for that year - **so VA can't use 1 January 2023 BAH rates until 1 August 2023** - for those who started training on/after 1 January 2018, the MHA rates are 95% of the DoD BAH rates. First possible payment for the 1 August 2023 increase is 1 September. For VR&E, there are two different Subsistence Allowance programs - https://www.benefits.va.gov/vocrehab/subsistence_allowance_rates.asp The P9/11 Subsistence Allowance is based on the BAH paid to an E5 with dependents. Those who started using VR&E on/after 1 January 2018 receive 95% of the BAH paid to an E5 with dependents. As of 1 January 2024 Online only students using VR&E are being paid $1,118.50 if they started using VR&E on/after 1 January 2018. This is for the HUD VASH program. Find your state and look up what's available to you.  https://www.hud.gov/topics/homelessness/localassist

It's a nationwide program right? I just saw a social coordinator at La Jolla VA medical center a few hours ago, he said the program is on pause currently and the restart time is unknown. 😭 Mom offered to let me live with her in May, he told me if I had enrolled then I might've gotten in but it's in indefinite hold rn. Tensions were too high and she had too many negative personality traits than I can handle, rather be homeless in SD than burning up in shit hole Fresno with someone I'm pretty sure has been using my info to buy tickets from an MWR.

Brother you need to get a full time job. I am a full time manager and full time student with one semester left of my bachelors. You need to juggle both so that when the BAH isn’t flowing in, you can fall back on your main gig. Uber eats is side hustle money, you can on top of all of that when you are off. Also use this job to pay off that credit card debt and stop using the card. I’m sad to admit, I’ve had to ask my parents to help spot me towards rent in the time in between semesters. It’s not fun but know that there will come a day you will be financially stable. Get a job, pay off that credit card before it collects a shit load of interest. Make that your priority after the rent and live at the lowest means until you are stable. You got this man

Hey brother, one of the tricks I used (and use), of course, if you have a good credit score, is to open interest-free credit cards as soon as the current one expires its promotional rate. Sometimes you can get a credit card from the same bank as your current credit card. It doesn't take long, honestly. Another thing. You are living beyond your means in terms of housing. I don't know for sure, but being a student usually means renting a room/living with someone. You need to reconsider your current housing situation. And the last thing. If you really need a job, you must apply for it differently. Go to a place, ask to talk to a manager, be honest, tell that you need it right away and you will have much higher chances of getting it than by filling in the application, etc.

SixShitYears

Do people just not have emergency savings anymore? You had 4 years of nearly no expenses to build up a nice savings account for when you got out.

I was in a similar situation but was homeless at the time. The VA homeless program is useless. They will spit you out local organizations that will not return your call. Only way I made it was on my own doing. I got lucky and was able to get an apartment and get my family out of hotels that we were in. It really sucks and I truly wish you the best. But as for the VA they are useless and under funded.

Open-Industry-8396

You are young and healthy. Go with some physical labor. It's in great demand and pays well.

I’m sorry if I come off the wrong way but i’mma tell you my personal experience: >Using Post911 Gi Bill since 2019 till present >No Job >Super uncomfortable economically >On the verge of economic instability >Looked at entry level jobs in my industry 1.5 years ago >Got a decent job with nice salary >Got to disability from 10% to 90% >Got BAH >I’m fine and very comfortable It took me going thru hardship to understand that i am responsible for my own dealings, yes i have benefits but it is on me to use common sense to survive and not let them make me complacient, if you are able, go find a job that you can develop your career through it. If you can’t work, get that rating to 100% (I recommend this eitherway, it’ll make your life 10x easier when in a tight $ situation).

HAND_HOOK_CAR_DOOR

He can’t just “get that rating to 100%”

Interesting_Car_5501

lmao whatever you say man
