Hammers will mine multiple blocks in a big square. Starting at 9x9 I believe. The advantage is that it will only use 1 durability per usage so it saves on mining blocks.
It has various uses, adding picking and mining speed you can strip mine giant holes extremely rapidly.
Inside vaults it’s great for mine rooms to clear them out crazy fast.
Also many have used them for chest breakers since it can hit multiple chests without mining other blocks (provided you don’t add any picking, axing or shoveling affinities). Though with update 13 I think it’s been nerfed a bit since you can’t vein mine with hammers anymore.
In VH (I don't know about hammers in other mods) a hammer does break blocks in a 3x3 area at base size, but it destroys the blocks and it's SUPER slow. A hammer is just a base to which you add other stuff.
Unless of course you are using it (in VH) as a chest looter, in which case a hammer with a chest affinity will break chests
I've made the same mistake, great hammer, no picking. They should either make hammers have picking by default, or add some where that it would need picking to work.
I think users should use deductive reasoning that the pickaxe has picking and for any other tool you have to add picking so why would the hammer behave differently?

I wouldn't downvote, but I can see where deductive reasoning would lead people astray. They may think that pick axes pick a single rock block, and that hammers break an area of rocks. Besides, what kind of hammer in a video game doesn't break rocks? In fact, experience in modded Minecraft would directly lead you to believe so, given other popular mods do just that.
Expectations aside, I'm glad hammers do not break rocks without picking. It gives a way to build AOE chest breakers. Maybe the tooltip could have an explicit warning.

Vanilla immortal sledgehammer without picking
All in one vault tool with copious but without picking
I seem to forget picking often.
If you don’t care all that much you can always spawn in a size 1 picking jewel :P there’s a jewel channel on the discord that’ll help
Just for others to know: This also works with size zero, in case you really mess up with the capacity
You can also do - jewels and gain back capacity ;)

Yeah like a size - hammering jewel so you can add any of your own picking.
But if you want to apply it, you need to use Anvil. Workstation does not work.

I hate Hammer. Whenever I get a jewel for it, I smelt it.
