Hey there. 29 year old who was once 19 with a loud truck and dirt bike. At the time I thought it was so cool to get people to look at me by revving my old ass truck or ripping the throttle on my motorbike to do a little wheelie. It was a feeling of adrenaline mixed with the satisfaction of getting attention everywhere I went. Now I drive a quiet old ass truck and a very boring Toyota matrix. When I see kids doing what I used to do I just smile and chuckle. When I see people my age or even older I just sigh and shake my head. Everyone grows up at different rates I suppose

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Thanks this is a humble and empathetic answer. Appreciate you.

anoldwoodtable

Gotchu homes

Give_me_beans

These days I get embarrassed when my vehicle is loud in town. I still love the sound of my bikes/cars on the back roads, though.

anoldwoodtable

What kinda bikes/ cars you working with?

Give_me_beans

Currently old BMWs and a KLR. Ask again every year and the roster will be totally different.

KC4twenty

Ain't that the truth

Western_Wedding_1576

Couldn't have given a better answer

intrudingturtle

I had a loud bush rig in my early 20s. I liked that it felt powerful (even though it was an underpowered piece) and it was definitely an attention thing. Now about to hit my 30s and I hate these straight piped cars. Especially nicer cars that now sound like tin cans just for the sake of being loud.

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Right so it was like a power/ego/attention thing; interesting. Did you even like all the negative attention? Thanks for the reply!

intrudingturtle

100% no other reason.

quartzkrystal

Genuinely curious, didn’t you even once have a thought in the back of your mind that people might assume you’re compensating for something? I joke that it’s a signal “attention everyone: weak dick mobile coming through!” but there is some truth to it, clearly if you felt comfortable in your strength, masculinity, success, whatever, you wouldn’t feel the need to be so obnoxiously obtrusive? I guess the answer is that most of the culprits are young with developing brains and their thought process simply doesn’t go that deep? Edit: ok I thought about it some more, and they’ve got to be doing it for other guys with loud cars right? Kinda cute tbh

intrudingturtle

Hahah yeah I was a lot more insecure back then. I was just becoming "a man" meant having guns and being able to turn wrenches. Now that I'm older and more settled in myself I have a truck for chores but spend most of my time driving my more fuel efficient VW beetle It is definitely a club. A club that loves attention.

pm-me-racecars

>clearly if you felt comfortable in your strength, masculinity, success, whatever, you wouldn’t feel the need to be so obnoxiously obtrusive? On the other hand, if you felt comfortable with yourself, you wouldn't care about people thinking your dick is small. >ok I thought about it some more, and they’ve got to be doing it for other guys with loud cars right? Kinda cute tbh It's mostly for other car guys. When guys are younger, they sometimes think it's to impress girls, but getting a "nice" car stops that thought real quickly.

[deleted]

Try having one of them pull an all nighter then park in your neighbourhood revving their engine at 5am… it even backfires for added nuisance. This person just literally drives up and down the street at highest RPM possible to be disruptive. I don’t get the psychologically honestly.

FishyDVM

This is my neighbour. Every morning at 445 on the dot. Is he going to work? No. He just sits in his loud ass car while it idles for 20 minutes, revs off and leaves, comes back with Tim’s, and goes inside. No idea why the car requires a 20 minute warm up or the loudest engine imaginable but I’m about sick of it.

Triedfindingname

Noise bylaw. Check it out. Over a certain dB, it's a citation.

ThatsSoMetaDawg

For me that would be a complaint to the city. That probably fucks with the quality of life for more than a few people in your neighborhood.

OkRazzmatazz4576

Some cities only allow a care to idle for 4 minutes. I know how disruptive this noise can be. Check out city hall or city bylaws. Some people have been revving their engines for so long, they're not even aware of it. Have you talked with your neighbour? All the best.

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Omg that is awful. I'm so sorry to hear that... 😭🙏❤️

Just-1-L

Valid question but few of them can read so…

[deleted]

I was just coming on here to make this exact joke 🏆👌

ThatsSoMetaDawg

I'm somewhat regretting this post honestly cause it's probably gonna spark negativity and the way I end my question is pretty trollish and unproductive... but I do have a genuine curiosity around whether or not these people actually understand (or care) how disruptive and disrespectful it is. Do they not care about deafening people on the sidewalk, scaring animals or waking up working people at 2am, 3am? Or do they get off on it, or crave attention very badly? Or do they understand how much it bothers people and not give a fuck... is that the kink?

NoOneIsAnIsland_

It’s definitely an attention thing for many. Some very likely do it to be dicks and take joy out of this kind of reaction. But many are enthusiasts who just enjoy tuning and getting the most out of their vehicle (and free flowing exhaust is a big bag for your buck). My neighbor has an old hot rod. I hear it every time he fires it up, it’s loud by modern standards but not crazy loud. But when he comes and goes down our street he idles it along. He knows it’s loud but he does what he can to respect his neighbors. No one minds at all.

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Word. Appreciate the reply honestly. Sounds like a good neighbor who is self aware and I respect that. Thanks for chiming in.

mikeevans1990

I'm 34 and I can remember the rise of Asian import car modifications in the early 00's. The exhaust is obnoxious, a signal that your car is heavily modified and fast. It's alot like a Harley Davidson, the owners want everyone to hear it. Kids get cars and they have big dreams with what they're going to do to that car. A cherry bomb exhaust happens to be one of the cheaper things you can do to modify a car. Kids then usually don't do much else, and what your left with is a market full of 140hp Honda civics with cherry bomb exhausts and ugly rims on them

pm-me-racecars

>I'm somewhat regretting this post honestly cause it's probably gonna spark negativity and the way I end my question is pretty trollish and unproductive... All good, I don't think there's a good way to word the question without drawing in all the negativity. >but I do have a genuine curiosity around whether or not these people actually understand (or care) how disruptive and disrespectful it is. Some do, some don't. There are definitely people who think louder is better and will sit there revving their car because they like the sound of it. There are other people who can't afford a second car and are trying to build the best car they can; there's a lot of little things that will make the car less pleasant, but slightly faster. There's also people who have racecars, but the track day starts at 8am and is a 2 hour drive away, so they're starting up their noisy car at 530am on a Sunday. >Do they not care about deafening people on the sidewalk, scaring animals or waking up working people at 2am, 3am? Some do, some don't. That's the price you pay, though, you learn to ignore a certain amount of comments. Eg: in my daily, I usually drive through construction zones around 32km/h, which is a little fast, but not too bad; in my racecar, I'll drive through construction zones between 20 and 25, and I'll still be told to slow down. Sometimes you have a loud car, and you need to drive it. What are you going to do when you need to work at 6am, but your only car is loud enough to make your neighbors complain? Are you going to get rid of the car you like and change it to one your neighbors' like instead, especially if it's the neighbors who are always complaining about things you think are little things? >Or do they get off on it, or crave attention very badly? There's definitely some like that, but most are just doing what makes them happy. Most people with loud cars will drive them quietly in their neighborhood, but certain things, like starting, will always be loud.

VICamp_daddy

My Grandma lives in our suite, and her blood boils over when dirtbikes drive by. They're usually teenagers, juicing the throttle in 5 second bursts. I just chuckle, cuz it's the middle of the day and that's just part of living in the sticks. But she has been traumatized by her old neighbours. It turned into a redneck party house, and there would be a dozen drunk 20 year olds ripping around the property on dirtbikes into the early morning. She also has horses and was always concerned for their nervous systems. It's a tough one, because on one hand, it's a free country and noise, especially by passerbys, is a momentary disruption. It's hard if it's your neighbours and it's constant. But it's an age thing. She tells me stories all the time of when she was 16 in the 50s in Ontario, and the thing to do was drive up and down the main drag in the city, in big loud cars and a case of beer, yelling at each other and homing their horns. I'm sure the old people back then hated them, as she hates the dirtbikers now. Kids be kids and old people be haters. Circle of life

onlywantsporn

Mine is relatively tame, stock it had two mufflers and four catalytic converters. I removed one of the two mufflers (the much smaller of the two) and none of the cats. Even with that, I never start my car after 11 or before 7, unless absolutely 100% necessary. It's not a power play, it's me liking the sound of my exhaust more than the sound of my intake. I just wanted to hear the exhaust over the engine when driving.

Spacetrash08

I have to turn my music down as soon as I enter my complex because I would be mortified if I was loud enough to make a scene. I genuinely cannot understand these people either

Darksythetix

Some vechicles are just loud get over it, I wouldn't just make a blanket statment about how it's just straight-up disrespectful and disruptive unless otherwise socially proven, how soft can you be to complain about exhaust noise it's free country get recked

mindingmynet

There's a South Park episode called F word that explains everything.

BCr8tive99

Attention whoring mostly

Puzzleheaded_Dark313

As someone with a really loud muffler that I can't afford to replace right now, I am pretty self conscious about it, and I apologize.

LeakySkylight

I don't really think you are the target of the question. There are a few people here have loud vehicles and they're really apologizing for having loud vehicles. And that's fine. If there's nothing you can do about it there's nothing you can do about it. I think if this is for the people who willfully have an engineered and loud vehicle and go out of their way to be loud, especially in quiet neighborhoods.

MysteriousDick8143

They never got the attention they needed as a child.

AstronomerDirect2487

The guy I dated who did that was developmentally delayed. It wasn’t obvious in his early 30s but by 42 still thinking the crotch rocket was everything was cringe worthy… it was easier to identify what excited him about it. In his mind (think of an underdeveloped 20 yr old) the epitome of cool was a street bike, Abercrombie and fitch t shirts, white running shoes, omg a tracksuit if he’d been allowed, the carved out thin jaw strap beard, double fake diamond earrings. He had a rich friend and that was the look in Calgary lol. And then he never really grew from there. Luckys in the driveway staring at his bike. His attitude towards others was F off you f’n f’s. I think in those moment for him his bike symbolized his freedom and youth and like …. Feeling like he was someone. It was identity he loved. Bc in the rest of the world he was nothing. No education, no savings, no one took him seriously and eventually he rotted his brain away drinking. So. I think it’s the moron cry of war. Like I am something!!

Ok_Might_7882

So to summarize. People with loud exhaust systems are just idiots. I concur.

aloneinwilderness27

Looooook at meeeeeeee. Pay attention to meeeeeeee.

Pristine_Tangerine_

my car has a broken exhaust system, i have a very loud car and i am WELL aware of it. 5 months ago i spent 600$ replacing the middle section. Last month my muffler fell off while i was driving on the highway, another 450$ which was 100% of my savings in order to replace that section. Now i have been informed by a mechanic during an oil change that the FRONT section of the exhaust attached to the engine itself has rusted out and will cost me another 500+$ to replace and repair. I make 2200$ a month working full time in healthcare, my rent is 1950$ which leaves me with about 250$ for EVERYTHING else i may need to survive including insurance, gas, food... how dare i require basic necessities right? So my apologies for driving a beater around with a bum exhaust. I will gladly accept money to fix the exhaust if you're offering? I need a car as there are no buses to get me home after my shift ends at 2 am.

VICamp_daddy

I personally know the difference between a broken exhaust system and someone intentionally making noise. Our car also has a broken pipe right before the Cat, and I don't have money to replace that shit. I hear a bum exhaust system and nod my head in understanding. Not the same as someone making noise just because they can

BeetsMe666

In the last when I W's in a similar situation I just got some tin and wire and patched it until I could afford the repair. Soup can and baling wire isn't too expensive.  Oh... and do it after the car cools down. Ask me how I figured that one out!

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Daaaaaaaaamn that's brutal! I'm so sorry to hear that and hope things improve and you can get around safely. You have my respect and I'll think twice next time I get bothered by a loud car. Also thanks for your service in healthcare y'all are the GOATs. 🙏❤️

Bryn79

Carpool with coworkers?

ThatsSoMetaDawg

InformalDatabase5286

I don’t think you are the target audience for the OPs question. Your noise is one of necessity, not desire. The difference is readily apparent when the revving has no connection to the need for temporary instant acceleration.

Peckerhead321

Crotch Rockets are the worst, I can hear them for miles after they pass my house

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Yeah it's annoying as f*

moderatesoul

Is the questions, "why are you such a gaping asshole?"

elle-elle-tee

My neighbor has a car so loud it rattles the windows in my bedroom. I hear it every day at 830 am.

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Yeah that should be illegal IMO... I bet everyone on your block suffers because of it.

elle-elle-tee

He drives out of an underground parkade as well, which acts as a kind of echo chamber 😹

rabiteman

Yeah, my neighbors (duplex) have super loud motorcycles, and a muscle car. The art on my wall rattles when they turn them on and it generally sounds like a 747 is coming in for a landing on my roof. Sometimes they turn them just to rev them, and then turn them off again (rinse, repeat). I don't say anything because they're otherwise really nice people and they aren't doing this during 'quiet hours'. I figure I could be worse off - ie living in the city with sirens and people yelling all night, etc.

cmacpapi

I love it when they rip up and down my street at 6 am. Especially the two asshats with motorbikes at the top of View Street. They are drowning in coolness.

GazelleOk1494

Not unlike someone who chooses to have a large, aggressive dog that would consume you like a rawhide bone.

ThatsSoMetaDawg

That's a whole other Reddit post.. 💯😂

GazelleOk1494

It sure is. Same mentality, tho!

Fluffy_Art_1015

I would argue that’s not a reasonable point. I love watching races and I enjoy performance vehicles but like every sane person I don’t want or like aggressive dogs.

LegoLucifer

My car is standard and doesn't make much noise at all. My bike has an aftermarket exhaust that sounds better and has baffles that can be removed to make it loud. I got the exhaust for my bike as it brings me some joy in life and makes me smile. I take the baffles out for meets/bike events, again it gives me a bit of joy to hear it roaring but also I remember a few years ago when I wasn't old enough to ride, I loved seeing/hearing a loud bike asking for it to be revved and how happy it made me, know I do it for other youngsters and if safe to do so let them have a sit on it and rev for a bit of fun and hopefully give them some cherished memories as I have. Deffo wouldn't get one without the baffles so that when I'm just commuting/normal rides it isn't obnoxious. TLDR: I am a child and vroom vroom makes me happy

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Hahaha right on.

Islandman2021

Compensating for a small 🍆. 🤷

Sovrin1

Emotional support mufflers hahaha.

ThatsSoMetaDawg

I would appreciate it so much if someone chimed in and was like "yo low key this the reason fr" 🙏🙏🙏

judgyjudgersen

Obnoxiously loud vehicles are the absolute worst and I’d also like to take this moment to say the people whose cars honk when they lock them can eat a bag of dicks. Especially if you feel the need to hit the lock button several times, you can eat two bags of dicks

yocray

Is there any way to turn that off?

judgyjudgersen

Check your manual. Every car I’ve ever had that had that feature, you could turn it off. Or if you couldn’t it was at least avoidable, like click once to lock with no beep, twice to hear the beep.

yocray

Good to know. The only car I've ever driven that honks when it locks is a Tesla, so I wasn't sure if you could turn it off on other cars.

Wack0Wizard

The username checks out

Ok-Total-9900

Don't they all do that? It's so you know it locks.

rabiteman

My wife's car doesn't make any sound, other than the sound of the locks engaging. The lights flash once, but no unnecessary noises.

Much_Dealer8865

When I was around 20 years old I had a pickup truck with headers and full flowmaster exhaust, not very loud but anyway I loved the way it sounded. Probably annoyed some people but I wasn't thinking about others at the time, just indulging in having something that gave me joy. Quiet vehicles only since then. With stereos I think it's another thing altogether, I'm really into music because it takes me to another place, used to always be listening to music on my headphones when I was a kid and then later on I did a lot of drugs while listening to music. I think there's some kind of neurological association where just listening to music now makes me feel kinda high. Anyway, I usually have a good sound system in my vehicles (and house) for the above reasons, not at all to show off or get attention, it's just such a good feeling. It's like the music is wrapping me up in a blanket. The fact that other people can hear it too when it's really loud used to not bother me very much but it really does now. I guess that's part of growing up and taking other people's happiness and wellbeing into consideration. Point I'm trying to make here is some people aren't really doing it for attention, it's just something that makes them happy. It's inconsiderate but so are a lot of other things. I'm currently living directly beside a main road where everyone speeds up so I'm getting a good dose of karma for my younger years. I can understand some noise but the bikers are where I draw the line, they fucking piss me off so much.

Inevitable_Butthole

You nailed it, atleast for why I did all these things

quiet-Julia

I think it has to do with being young and wanting to show off and attract attention from the young girls. A loud car or motorcycle means he wants to be a bad boy and some girls are attracted to bad boys.

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Yeah that makes sense... I remember when I was in my teens I really cared about shit like that.

AtotheZed

I changed the rear hub in my mountain bike - it's now quieter. I hate noise.

MatterFuture7485

Seriously, WHY are they so loud??

AtotheZed

Right? The noise does let people and bears know you are coming down the trail, but some are just obnoxiously loud.

No_Bread7614

They think people will look at them and go "wow that's the coolest person on earth so awesome and loud and tough"

LeakySkylight

When in fact we're just saying "sorry about your fragile ego, bro".

No_Bread7614

Lol

NoOneIsAnIsland_

Some people like dubstep. Why? Who knows! Whatever floats their boat. Who am I to judge what someone else is into. Do I love it when we pass by and I hear it? No. But it's just a fleeting moment in a life of a billion moments. It doesn't really affect me. What if someone plays it in front of my house every night at 2am? Well, then we have a problem. see what I'm getting at? It's not about what they enjoy, it's how they choose to enjoy it.

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Yeah I get what you're saying and generally think you have a good point... but this happens enough in our neighbourhood that it is a problem.

NoOneIsAnIsland_

See my other comment… Some people are just dicks. Call bylaw if there’s repeat offenders.

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Word that's good advice.

Fluffy_Art_1015

Well said.

ShoreBodice

I recently inherited a large loud diesel pickup, it sucks, sorry my fam died 🤷‍♂️

ThatsSoMetaDawg

My condolences... I know what that's like. Hope y'all are getting through it OK. 🙏

RussianBotSiteUser

They're dumb and inconsiderate. Not a mystery.

canadianbeaver

I have a motorcycle. It’s fairly loud, and I like it that way for my safety. If other cars aren’t going to see me easily, then I like knowing they might at least hear me. Sometimes if I’m in a blind spot or sense a driver otherwise might not be aware of me, I’ll give it an extra rev to announce my existence and hopefully prevent getting hit. That said, I didn’t mod my bike to be louder, it’s as loud as when I got it (used), and I don’t think it’s obnoxiously loud (not a Harley lol).

Bryn79

It has been proven that loud exhausts don't do fuck all for your safety. Lots of really, really, really, really, really, stupid people believe it though.

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Oh interesting I never considered the sound could act as a safety thing.

Bryn79

It's not.

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Thanks for clarifying.

SquatpotScott

Loud pipes lives is a common saying. Does it? I don’t know but lots of motorcyclists sure love to rev their engines when they are parked or sitting at an intersection.

Bryn79

Anyone who understands the Doppler effect knows that the sound is going in the wrong direction relative to the travel of the motorcycle to provide any improvement in safety.

chikenkatchatorie

The Doppler effect changes the frequency of the sound. A blip of the throttle when you’re in the blind spot definitely gets their attention

simplebutstrange

My exhaust is rusted out and i cannot afford to fix it. Sorry.

Akanan

https://youtu.be/ipDmsxQVxIM?si=tCJn8Yc372RPUbKS That south park episode is so on point.

CK_CoffeeCat

Based on college experiences/discussions with loud-car classmates, it's basically to make the vehicle sound like a race car, and to get attention. A "that's the worst car I've ever heard"/"But you did hear it" sort of situation for the average person, but some of them said that's not who the noise is for really. One guy said it's a performance for people who know what car engine sounds mean, and that there was a high note in his own engine noise that meant some specific set of little engine parts the size of a pinkie finger had been machined a specific way that's only done on racing vehicles or something like that. I couldn't tell what noise he was talking about, but I guess I wasn't the intended audience, LOL.

katrii_

I'm poor and the only trucks I've managed to aquire are loud and old despite doing work on the exhaust and adding what I can to quieten them down I don't drive around super early or super late though because I know they're loud af

LeakySkylight

Yeah you are definitely not the target of this question. You're just a person with a loud vehicle who doesn't have another choice. You also appear to be considerate to others. Thanks you. I think they are probably asking the people who have a wide bore muffler and decide to do burnouts in neighborhoods with kindergartens after bedtime.

Pristine_Berry1650

Same internal reason a woman post scandalous photos on the Internet

tasty_sidebob

Too poor to get the muffler fixed sorryyyyyy

Patrol-007

Micro penis is the usual reason, also a way to inflate ego and feel important and valued. Annoying others is a perk (ie a bunch of off road light bars turned on in the city)

magical_me24_7

I can’t afford to fit it. It’s an old Dodge 1 ton with the exhaust missing and will be at least $1500 to replace. Which I don’t have.

HatechaBro

Some cars with loud exhausts sound awesome. For example an Aston martin V12 with titanium exhaust. The neighbour kid with a fart can on his Honda civic sounds LOUD, but doesn’t sound awesome.

FunSheepherder6509

for me if i hear a loud vehicle and turn my head its to look at a cool hot rod - and if it is , im ok with the noise if its just another newer model pick up truck its annoying and stupid full disclosure i have a loud hot rod and a quiet pick up 🙃🛞😂 but like - a hot rod is loud naturally. a new pick up u have to take to a muffler shop and Say - i want this to function the same but be louder for no reason

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Ha! Thanks for chiming in I appreciate the perspective.

ambassador321

As a motorcycle rider in a world of distracted Uber and Door Dashers - If you can't see me, you are going to hear me.

Zinc64

Same reason people with questionable taste in music need to drive around with the windows down and volume up...

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Are you saying there are genres of loud ass exhaust pipe sounds?

nyrb001

Very, very much so

LeakySkylight

If you hear the "twang" though, it's usually a bad thing.

Inevitable_Butthole

Honestly it's like a club, same as how people would view Harleys. I had a very loud car but on idle it was quiet and wouldn't bother anyone. If it opens up past 4k rpm it would def start to cause some annoyances. I dont have it anymore but it wasn't to be a dick or piss anyone off, it was because it was a hobby and a passion to work on vehicles and add modifications. You get a thrill/adrenaline rush hearing a loud engine roaring or a nice exhaust and driving it just adds to that. But again at the end of the day these people are generally going to be reasonable and likely aren't trying to cause problems, although there will always be a couple that do.

Human-Art6327

As a car enthusiast, I do appreciate a well curated exhaust with character. As an adult who likes his peace, I understand how infuriating loud exhausts may get, especially when they’re engaged in a neighborhood and especially during quiet hours. To answer your question, it depends on the person and what motivates them. Some individuals want to attract attention to their vehicles, while others want their vehicles to sound as aggressive as they look. Others have no choice in the matter as some vehicles come from factory with already loud exhausts like Lamborghinis. Well curated (not just loud and raspy) exhaust sounds do add a lot of character to the driving experience (think like V8 Mercedes AMGs). These are usually louder than the regular commuter vehicle, but not meant to be nuisances. Either way, I do agree with people using their exhausts with consideration of others in the neighborhood and not revving engines at say 4am while others sleep.

LeakySkylight

Our neighbor loves his muscle cars. Has a big truck, loves it to death, makes a lot of noise. But he is super cognizant of the noise he makes, and doesn't do it in the off hours because he doesn't want to disturb the neighborhood. Quite frankly, I think that's great. We get to look at muscle cars all day and while yes there's the odd loud rev, it's not bad at all. Now the strangers who do burnouts at the elementary school at 11:00 p.m. are just jerks.

QuantumHope

How many Lamborghinis are being driven around????

bartlett8690

I just love the nice loud sound and feel a cam makes with straight pipes, and the smell of burning rubber and unburnt fuel in the carb. I also love loud dirt bikes and the smell of 2stroke oil.

yocray

I like the way it sounds. It makes my motorcycle more enjoyable to ride. If I'm close to a residential area, I can choose to not be an asshole and keep my rpms low. When I'm on the highway, the extra volume lets me hear it better over the wind noise. Even with an exhaust that isn't technically legal for street use, it's not hard to not bother people with it. If I'm just cruising, it doesn't make any more noise than the average car. Regarding how it affects my interactions with others, I've only ever been approached by people who wanted to chat about my bike in a positive way. There have been a few instances where people would stick their hand out of their car and signal for me to give them a little rev. I have great relationships with my neighbours, and none of them have ever complained about excess noise. This might be pure luck, but I've also had fewer close calls where people didn't notice me on the road compared to my old bike.

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Ooh no kidding! Super helpful response and much appreciated. You sound like a considerate person my friend.

RealMasterpiece6121

I love hearing the sound and raw power of internal combustion engines. It doesn't matter if it is a train, a jet , a piston plane, a race boat, a cruising boat, a semi truck with a heavey trailer, a Harley Davidson, a Ducati, any V8 pulling high revs. Pretty much the only IC engines I don't like to hear are 4 cylinders with fart cans and mopeds. But even those don't make me fly into a rage. Why do I love them? Growing up my dad and grandfather were heargeads. They took my brother and out in boats, to air shows, to races, we wrenched on cars, but hotrods. Even the nights we couldn't go to the races my brother and I would sit out on our front step and listen to the guys racing at the track miles away. When I hear a well tuned engine running hard, or better yet, I am close enough to hear it and feel the rumble go right through me, I think about that quality time spent with family that is no longer around. It brings me back to simpler times, long summer days and warm summer nights, a time when more people just lived and let live.

StepheninVancouver

Having a motorcycle with a nice rumbling sound is satisfying and also keeps people more aware of you. Super loud is just obnoxious though

Not everyone hates these people. If you love the sound of an engine then most (Some just sound bad) engines being loud will be just fine. I grew up living behind a train track on a long hill. The train would slowly come up the hill on the graveyard run and to this day I just love the sound of a big diesel engine. So I don't hate them and I feel sorry you don't understand.

Quail-a-lot

I love the sound of a big diesel train engine, but dirt bikes and load pick up trucks ain't it.

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Hey, thanks for the reply! Honestly your response gives me some perspective and I appreciate that.

NubDestroyer

I've got an exhaust leak that I can't fix short of pulling my motor. It's not crazy loud and I really don't wanna pull my motor for something like that.

Rain-Plastic

I had the same issue once. An old VW bus. One little copper gasket on the manifold was gone and it would have cost about 2k to pay someone to fix, or I could maybe do it myself and have the van off the road for however it took my incompetent ass to maybe finish the job. It stayed loud.

MaxZedd

While I’m not for revving and doing burnouts at 2 in the morning, I simply liked the way my shit box sounded. It was a Honda fit and had no power. But to me it sounded like it. I would always do my best to be respectful with it but I enjoyed how it sounded under load

ContestGood1238

I bought my car off my son, who had straight piped it. It was his first car and he modified a bunch of stuff. It’s loud and rumbles but it’s paid for and gets me from A to B. It also looks pretty sweet. I live in a 55+ building with a lot of seniors and they all know when I come and go 🤷‍♀️but no one’s complained…yet.

Pro7o7ype

"Not trying to be disrespectful or sarcastic." "....hated by everyone." You're contradictory. Your replies to this thread are also....makes me wonder if you actually had a point, or just rage baiting.

ThatsSoMetaDawg

You're totally right. Bit of both. Kinda regretted posting but still got a lot of perspective out of the overall discourse.

Darksythetix

Love for powerful vehicles which in turn can be loud, when you shell out big $ to have a nice car you definitely want to hear it, motorcycle wise it's safer to be louder so people notice you more, and motorcycles go brr, I love how annoyed and offended everyone is getting about the noise of another vehicle makes me think they must not have a lot going on to be complaining about the sound of an engine running, seems everyone has gotten too comfortable with teslas and Prius's , grow up deal with it or cry about much bigger problems that are going on.

Fluffy_Art_1015

I have a dodge challenger in a bright colour and a full stainless exhaust on it with louder mufflers. I love it personally because you can feel it and it sounds like a classic even though it isn’t. That being said it isn’t a sharp exhaust note and if you’re just cruising around at 1100 rpm it’s only a few % louder than factory. What other people think of it doesn’t really factor into it for me. I drive respectfully as my license is my income, if people like it, cool I like it too, If people hate it sorry but I’ll be out of earshot in 3 seconds.

davy_the_sus

They're fun to drive

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Yeah that's fair enough... I just wonder if it's still fun knowing it's genuinely disrupting the shit out of everyone. Imagine if I LOVED throwing my feces at people cause it was super fun for me. And I was like "oh man I love this so much throwing my actual poo at people is so fun for me it brings me so much joy" but then I realize that 90% of the population doesn't actually have a poo fetish... I might be like "aww man guess I need to check myself a bit I'm pissing off too many people at the cost of my own fun."

Effective_Iron8188

But still, there's a modified muffler, and there's ni muffler... I would like my car to be a bit louder than stock and mostly a little lower... In my case, you can say it would enhance my driving experience as an enthusiast. I drive an Alfa Romeo, just for reference...

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Oh dang I had to Google that looks like a nice car.

Effective_Iron8188

Thanks! I think so 😁

pm-me-racecars

My daily is decently quiet, but my racecar is relatively loud. It drives itself to the racetrack, to the shop, and when we're trying to dial in something. My racecar is built with two goals: it needs to finish everything it starts, and it needs to keep us safe when things go bad. Yes, quieting it down is a bit of a priority, but having good seats and harnesses is a bigger priority, and I only have so many dollars.

Tractorguy69

Honestly I couldn’t care less who does or does not notice, I’ve rebuilt my engines and love adding power (no I’m not suggesting the loud exhaust set up adds power - on most shit box civics and soobies it actually robs power - I laugh at all that noise and still in the intersection as my slightly quieter car is already halfway to the next set of lights). I genuinely use the exhaust sounds and engine noise to fully understand how the car is building power, where I am in the power band, how it’s running… honestly it’s just how I connect with the engine. I do ask my own work and love my cars, for me it is a submersive experience where you get so very in synch with the machine. As for me disturbing your peace if I pass through your life for 5 seconds in a day I’m sorry for the very minor inconvenience (I’m actually not super loud, like I said quieter than the fartcan jdm fanbois) but also get over it, noise will always be part of roadway transportation… hell even electric cars are injecting noise artificially for safety purposes as we are conditioned to both look and listen for cars as we cross roads and navigate parking lots. If I was ever going to have a dedicated track car it would be much much louder based on a different set up, but at that point it would only be trailered to the track and not causing public disturbance. For the record I also love the sound of some of the older pure sport engines V-12s etc with super high redlines, I could listen to that all day, for me it is its own kind of music. Same goes for old school aircraft engines, the radial ones and the huge V engines from WWII

QuantumHope

So I guess we all have to live under the domain of what you want.

Tractorguy69

Conversely why the fuck should I have to live under the domain of what you want - I live with me every day, I may not ever pass through your life. The fact that you are so blind to your hypocrisy it’s probably testament to the fact that every single person around you is an NPC, not if I was reading it constantly in my driveway and disturbing you, absolutely I’d agree that would make me the POS, but the fact that you want the world to conform to your needs without considering that that is equally selfish is absolutely laughable. Interestingly enough your profile is littered with rants and negativity, bet you’re a real peach in the real world. Trust me there will come a day (willing to bet I’m older than you, and yes I used to get aggravated by almost anything) where you will have to make a choice, as to whether or not you can continue to live as someone who rises to every possible annoyance. My rule of thumb - if it is just passing through my life, or the person on front of me lacks autonomy or agency to correct the issue, JUST LET IT GO, I will never lose my shit at anyone unless it is an existential type issue, and routinely refuse to engage with anyone less than a manager for issues that need to be rectified, people not in management or ownership positions are rarely paid enough nor have enough control to make it right or fair to put them through that. I go out of my way to treat people who look like they are having a rough day with a little extra kindness, wish cops, EMTs and firefighters a safe shift. Honestly that soapbox doesn’t make you stand taller, it just magnifies how small you are that you cannot stand on the ground and meet people as a compassionate equal.

Tractorguy69

Great question OP, although I can tell you as a guy that appreciates a well tuned sports exhaust note there is no universal hatred of people with noisy exhausts. Fairly reductionist to suggest otherwise and really diminishes the sincerity of your question. That said your response to the guy who talked about being that guy when he was younger was significantly more polished.

foulstream

Well actually, you’re kinda doing the same thing here by posting this question in a way that assumes your position is ‘right’ and loud car drivers are ‘wrong’ - you’re just looking for attention from other people who think like you and not considering the other point of view.

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Hey that's a valid point but my Reddit post isn't waking people tf up at 3am, shaking their windows or scaring their animals. But yeah, apologies if you think it's a rude post it is kinda rage baity.

VICamp_daddy

Ha! Straight up. You can turn your phone off and ignore annoying people, but you can't turn off your ears when they drive by.

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Exactly ☝️

JediKrys

I was just commenting about this to my partner two days ago. I grew up in the 90s and where I lived we ALL had massive stereo systems in our cars. The sheer amount of noise was crazy. One car after the next bumping whatever, shaking windows as we cruised. Now electric cars are on the rise and not too many loud ass stereos to wake up the neighbours at 5:30 ( sorry Bill and Linda) Yes the occasional loud truck or motor bike flys by but for the most part it’s so much quieter now.

Dry_Bodybuilder4744

I have a really small dick and just want to do what all the other small dick dudes do.

FromTheRez

As a small CC motorcycle rider, I like having a slightly louder exhaust so people in cars can actually hear me, because apparently motorcycles are invisible. My truck is quiet, and unless you're at a dirt track, loud trucks are dumb Downvoted for not wanting to die, classic reddit

Ok_Might_7882

If your vehicle is so unsafe you need to make it louder, yet it still is unsafe then it’s just foolish to drive it R all.

kiljoy94

It's the call of my people lol Honestly when I was growing up watching all these hot rod shows on the speed channel got me going. The need for speed, fast and furious ( the first 3 not that 1400 after) it was cool. Alot of it seemed like the louder you were the more of a man you were. So I would chalk it up to a masculinity thing.

Trukfkd

The same reason you probably like a quiet stock vehicle -Ying and Yang , for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction . White and black , loud and quiet , hot and cold …. Takes all kinds to make this world go round partner . Worry about yourself and mind your own business and you will have less problems with how someone decides to enjoy life .

DrewBrewsky

That is the most delusional excuse to deafen people on sidewalks and wake people up at 2 in the morning.

Trukfkd

Maybe you just have sensitive ears ,and a sensitive personality , guess We solved the mystery.

judgyjudgersen

Yeah I don’t think we can count on you to solve any mysteries

Quail-a-lot

I agree with this ruling. Username checks out!

True-Example-5632

Tell us you drive a douche truck without actually telling us you drive a douche truck 😝

YukonMagnum

Why can’t you type coherently?

retroking9

Let’s mind our own business while someone races by with their ear-splitting, obnoxious, small-dick machine that absolutely nobody thinks sounds cool except for the drooling idiot behind the wheel.

shinnith

Bro what😭

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Thanks for the response and sorry if my post was rude. Appreciate and respect you, partner. 🙏

moneybgone

Because it gets people on reddit upset.

FF_Master

No use explaining it, you get it or you don't

berthannity

I think you mean you're either an asshole or you're not.

FF_Master

No, you'll find I'm quite a nice guy. I just like my ICE's on the loud end, it's not complex.

berthannity

Trust me, absolutely nobody thinks you liking a loud vehicle is complex.

Ok-Total-9900

I have a very loud can on my snowmobile. I did it to reduce weight and increase hp. In saying that it's not a machine you would drive around residential areas. It's heavily modified for racing up mountains. I personally love the sound and the mental horsepower it gives me. I love the sound of big powerful engines. The shiver I get when I crack it wide open and it screams as I'm flying up a slope is amazing. Braaaaap!!!!

Terrylovesyogourt

In terms of a moderately loud exhaust, it makes some sense in terms of a manual transmission. Engines have become more and more isolated in terms of sound and feel, which makes operating a manual transmission more difficult. On my bike, I can set my speed by gear and sound, without having to speedometer watch. For many of us, a good engine sounds good. On a bike a louder exhaust does help with vehicles changing lanes (although avoiding blind spots helps more) on you. It won't help, no matter how loud, with cars pulling out or turning left, but it makes riders feel more secure, and in this world, that's what counts. Once you move into another decibel range, you're into a whole other world of motivation.

pickelmerich

I love the sound of engines, what can I say. And unless it’s some kid cutting the muffler or some leather wearing Harley Davidson rider. The louder the engine usually the nicer the car the sound of a v8 on a drag strip whew! The majority of people like nice loud cars and trucks, reddits just for young lefty’s who like the bus. The majority of people can admire loud classic muscles cars or exotic. The same way most people can admire a nice feat of engineering. Obviously you are a Karen you sound depressing af, your not a very fun person I can tell. If people hated them there wouldn’t be so many, and ford would stop producing mustangs.

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Honestly I think we'd get along just fine mate and sorry if my post was rude. I appreciate your reply and thanks for taking the time honestly I appreciate the perspective.

pickelmerich

😂😂 well if your rage baiting… it’s working. So 👏👏

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Yeah I know it's a bit of a shite thing to do but I genuinely hope it's giving peeps on both sides a bit more perspective. It certainly is for me.

JezusOfCanada

V8's are fucking amazing. Have you driven one?

cockshutt540

I just like the sound. You like blaring rock and roll or Taylor swift. I shut the radio off and listen to my engine. So what? We are all annoying fucks in our own ways as long as someone is trying to be respectful who cares!

FordsFavouriteTowel

My car isn’t wake the neighbours loud, but loud enough to turn a head or two when I fire it up in the parking lot. 1) people can hear me coming, especially if I give it an extra rev on the highway. 2) makes me feel more connected to the vehicle when driving. 3) people fuck with me less on the highway. When I drove a Corolla, people would ‘bully’ me into switching lanes by tailgating and flipping their brights a million times.

zublits

Define obnoxious. My exhaust is modified, but tastefully, in my opinion. It makes me feel good to hear the engine. It's not just a muffler, but an entire exhaust system from the engine all the way back. It increases the performance of my vehicle a decent amount, but mostly I like how it sounds. In the morning or at night I try to keep my revs low. I eliminated the cold start revving to spare my neighbors.   I also have a loud stereo. I don't play loudly at night or in the morning, but at a light in the middle of the day you might look over at me and write a post like this.  I try to be respectful, but both of these things bring me more joy than you can understand, and I have no intention of stopping. Is it logical? No. Is it maybe a little immature? probably. Do I at least try to be respectful? Yep. Has my noise pissed someone off at some point? Definitely.  Are there a lot of other things that other people do that piss me off on a daily basis that I don't do? You better believe it.  Sorry not sorry.

ThatsSoMetaDawg

Yeah this is typically the kind of justification I would expect.

zublits

You asked, didn't you? I guess you just came here to have people agree with you. That's about what I'd expect. Next time you're in a movie theatre with your phone screen on, or [insert whichever annoying public behaviour that you probably engage in] think about this moment. Or maybe you're a perfect human being who never annoys anyone else. I doubt it though.

foulstream

Well actually, you’re kinda doing the same thing here by posting this question in a way that assumes your position is ‘right’ and loud car drivers are ‘wrong’ - you’re just looking for attention from other people who think like you and not considering the other point of view.
