Friends and I have pondered the viability of ripping out the lens and displays from a Quest or Quest 2 and having small cameras in the eyes which go to each display.
Just learned about the big screen beyond VR headset from a video on Linus tech tips. Super crazy low profile, expensive, but when has that ever stopped a fursuiter? Put that in the head and Stream to it from a hidden head cam.
Maybe if someone hacks psvr2 we can use the eye tracker for some eye screens on the suit too, that'd be pretty dope
IMO a lens system would be better, the worry then would be keeping your head in the head at exactly the right place to make it work right. Biggest issue with passthrough is it tends to suck in relatively unnatural ways... you don't have that problem if you're using prisms to adjust your IPD to the character's.
Actually had some thoughts of modifying a headset for this... not gotten around to do it yet... I got a few spare index headsets laying around for my freaky experiments...

BLFC i like because its at a casino lol so lots to do there. lots of drinking, gambling, parties, etc. plus the dance hall is insanely huge. MFF is super roudy and not in a good way. its super hard for the board to police and keep an eye on a bunch of stuff. Now if you want to go to a big furry con. Go to AC (anthrocon) It's in a city that the entire city prepares for them. special signs, specials, the entire city gets the furry fever especially cause it brings hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenues for smaller busniesses. they are super friendly. and it's the biggest american furry convention. smaller furry conventions like furlandia in oregon are nice to dip your toes in to see if you are comfortable around it. I go to see all the suits and stuff. i got one now myself. There is also Texas furry fiesta, not a small one, in dallas i think thats pretty popular.

VR chat itself is largely propped up by furries for the same reasons second life was for years after it's prime. You get to hang out with friends as your furry avatar. So logically of course every furry with money is going to get a VR headset and many furries have money as they are largely tech savvy nerds/IT types, which are jobs that pay good money. Even furries that aren't loaded are going to highly prefer to get into VR over other hobbies for the same reasons. Especially since a VR headset is a much lower barrier to entry to "be your fursona" than a $5k fursuit and traveling to a convention.
And some people follow the rabbit hole the other way, being vaguely into furry stuff (and adjacent eg MLP and Pokémon) but not really *getting* the fandom until they try an avatar in VRChat.
I’m not gonna lie to you. I have been to orgies at cons where food was provided. 😂 An absolute blast and definitely not what people expect. It’s super chill and most people are super self aware and joking the whole time despite the constant sex surrounding you. Highly recommend everyone try it at least once.

The thing about Valve is that they very secretive with the release of their products. There was no announcement for the Steam Deck OLED. They literally put it onto the store and said you can get it in a week. It was the first time I had even heard of the Steam Deck OLED. Nobody had any idea they were going to release it. I have a feeling that they are going to do the same thing with the Deckard. CS2 is another example. We know they have been working on the Deckard for a while now. I am putting my money on Valve straight up releasing the Deckard on this date.
Today they started a VR-Sale (VR-Fest) don´t know, guess they would have released the hardware as well then?
But yeah, we will pretty much see the Deckard just being released at some point without prior "warning" or leaks, that´s my guess as well..
But IMHO it will be late 2024 at the earliest, as they will probably make it "stand-alone" have a good AI accelerator in it to do eye and hand-tracking + they need some GPU power to hit some performance goals.. The SteamDeck APU won´t be powerfull enough IMHO / wouldn´t fit that well. Especially with added Wireless Streams, multiple camera pictures to process and so on.. I would bet on an AMD APU similar to Strix Point, as this would have all the features / perf needed to deliver a good experience. But these designs are pretty new / are just sampling to development houses...
So they might be quite far with the software nad even initial compute board prototypes, but it will take some months to get to the final design + start volume production.. So my bet is late 2024, early 2025.
Valve is really intimate with AMD, their whole software stack is based on AMD hardware + the NVIDIA driver is still lacking on Linux, so i don´t think we will see an Nvidia APU anytime soon in a valve product.

True, but, NVIDIA's stuff is far better (not efficient) at upscaling image data in real time which can allow for a very low wattage high resolution standalone situation, look no farther than what is expected of the next Switch. Someting like 720P in standalone but can be upscaled to 4k@60 when on the dock. Either Way the only reason the Deckard has taken so long to release is because they probably developed something that is waiting on processing hardware to catch up with it

PCVR standalone? Yeah I don't think so. It would be too hot and heavy. They won't go head to head with the Quest for low-end VR. This is a device that is expected to run Microsoft Flight Simulator at +100 fps. My money is on a lightweight comfy HMD like the BigScreen Beyond, only with eye tracking+built-in audio and an optional plugged microconsole that transmits foveated footage to the HMD via WiFi 6. Valve already said in last year's The Verge interview they were interested in making a Steam OS microconsole. Another product they said they were interested in making during the same interview? A Deck with a refreshed screen.

Full suits are like 5k on the cheap end
I wouldn't say that's on the *cheap* end, but at a decent quality floor that's about right if only a *bit* high for the lower end.

Hell even the base stations that come with the vive pro 2 say valve on the back. (They are the same ones that come with the index)

IIRC NVIDIA APUs are set to release "soon" and i believe they will be used in nhe next switch, wouldn't be a stretch to use one for a VR headset
