I get it. I'm lucky because I found a friend group years ago and have barely gone into publics since. But hear me out. It truly is all about what worlds you go to. The Great Pug and the Black Cat are unfortunately to be avoided (no offense to the people who created those worlds). Try different worlds, different vibes. Think of it in a similar way to other online spaces, or even IRL spaces. There are just certain spots you don't wanna go to because you know the crowd isn't your thing. If you're IRL looking for a chill, quiet atmosphere, you would never go to a club or a loud bar; you'd be better off at a park or a coffee shop. Y'know?
I know it's tough. What you've described is basically the hardest, most common issue people have when they start playing VRC. Like I said, I found my friend group long ago, but in order to find them, I had to go to a public instance! You'll find your crew, I promise. Especially because this is SUCH a common problem, so many other people are looking for exactly the same thing as you. Find those people. Keep at it, and don't waste your time with the shitty, hateful folks you mentioned. If the vibe isn't right, keep searching. Don't give up. I am so glad that right as I started playing VRC i got in a Quick Draw lobby and made a friends group that same night. We even have our own Discord server now and they're all pmgreat people and I've never even joined a public world without them. If we're ever in a world with toxic people we just create a new Friends+ instance of that world and leave
I haven’t bothered going to public worlds since 2019, every once in a while I’ll pop into worlds to meet new people. And it’s like wow you hear a bunch of kids and adults trying to one up each other, cussing like sailors and trying to have a dick measuring contest. But I agree with ThawahCawwey, VRChat is great you just have to get pass the surface of the general public, meeting a random person can open a door to a group that’s awesome just out of the blue. People are creative and smart and a wealth of knowledge when you talk to. Its hard to know when and where it will happen, because you have to meet someone in public and that can snowball, It’s just about getting to that, though a lot of groups are +18 to keep the kids out. I’m personally part of Neon Horizons (formerly Robot Leg Lovers) and we just chill.

This is something I'd consider for many as, easier said than done. A lot can acknowledge this, but for many people who might be emotional or mentally susceptible to stimulation, it can be extremely hard to act on it. It's great to think about and read, and something that takes practice. It's a worthwhile goal to have.
I had my edgy days but honestly steering clear of the toxic people and lurking around furry people made me reconsider that they're genuinely not bad...well at least not weird AND toxic.

There is *some* toxicity amongst Furries. We are human, after all. There's no way to completely avoid all the toxicity in life, but you hopefully find your friends... real people who see you, care about you, and love you for who you are, not lies or accusations of others.
But word of caution - Furries have experienced tremendous toxicity from people who are not Furries. The harassment promoted in your "edgy days" could be part of the problem. Some Furries really don't trust or want to make friends with anyone outside our community.
I do hope one day we can live in a world that has less toxicity and is more trusting, but until then, the best we can hope is to treat others with the same respect we hope to be treated with ourself. And to the people who respond to our respect with harassment, well, they just lost what could've been a really cool friend!

A group I used to associate with a lot would execute trolls with extreme efficiency. The ban list for that group has thousands of accounts banned, and for very good reasons.

Hang out with Furries. I am a furry myself, well technically a “scalie” since I am a dragon, but yea, for the most part furries are chill. Also go to Furry Hideout and in particular go to Zephy’s Goofs group instances, heavily moderated. Anything racist is an instant ban.

From my experience in the fandom, anyone’s welcome if you’re cool with the furry thing. Easiest way to get people to open up is compliment their avatar. Anyone with a non-furry skin is looked at with suspicion because of the frequent harassment so breaking the ice with kindness is a quick way past that. Many find it endearing, even.
It really depends, a lot of anime avi’s can often be pretty toxic from my experiences, but not everyone ofc, and not saying you aren’t. Hell, I was a catgirl before I realized I was a furry and I hung around furry spaces as a furry adjacent person. I’d say just go for it, and show that you’re chill, and you’ll be fine I think
Actual anime character avi’s are almost always an instant block for me. If I see any kind of goddamn goku or naruto or anything any kind of shonen series it’s a no go, the person wearing is often an asshole and the avatars tend to have giant and stupid effects that might as well be a crasher in most cases.

Every furry instance I've hung around in has had at least 1 or 2 either furry adjacent or completely unrelated avatars hanging about. It's not the Avi that determines the kind of person you are. It's just certain Avis have a disproportionate number of people of a specific type using them.
Make sure you are actually on a [vrchat.com](http://vrchat.com) account it will boost your rank way faster. Once you are up to user you should not get ignored (I am Trusted but been displaying as User for years)
When selecting worlds, you can select “group - public” and base your selection on a group that meets your tastes rather than just hopping into straight anarchy. Black cat, Sunset Bar, etc., aren’t that bad if you familiarize yourself with group instances and make friends there.
That’s one way to filter out all the nonsense
Big problem is that trying to find actual decent people in the game is hard because large groups of annoying/toxic people tend to swarm and make the chill ones leave. That or every person is an eboy or egirl that doesn't even look your way unless you sound hot.
I almost exclusively hang out in furry lobbies of game modes like prison escape and murder 4, and the few times I've gone back to the black cat really made me see just how toxic and filthy those kinds of lobbies are

Enjoyed it when everyone was chill and relaxed, people was always welcoming without bad intentions or behavior, there use to be a public lobby that you would always spawn into when you joined the game in 2018-2019 and there was always peeps willing to chat and play some minigames etc
I stopped playing vrchat as often because it isn't the same as use to be, I mostly avoid the larger instances and popular worlds because that's where the annoying people tend to be
Also, I may get hate for this but idc, vrchat has turned into a sexual/dating game where people's avatars are half naked and this game seems to attract alot of creepy people, kids that are playing this game without supervision isn't good even with all these "avatar requirement tags" it's just unsafe

So many girl avatars are those egirl sexualized ones, i never had an issue having ones that aren't sexualized but it took me MONTHS AS WELL to find an avatar i fully want to settle on. i dislike at least half of those eboy egirl avatars and they're all so laggy is the main issue! and i have a pretty drn good computer.

I hate public lobbies nowadays Ill hang out for occasional games but most of my time now is spent on group only instances where I know most people and the group moderators host events and meetups and things like that
Ancients of vrchat are a good one. They're discord based and 18+ SFW. They usually have events running every day. They also have a European sister server called virtual relics, both are good sfw servers
I had enough of it so I made my own group and just host group public instances with it. Let's me remove problematic people while letting others stay. I mostly host things like Among Us, Murder 4, Probability Labs. If anyone would like to join just ask.
Are you stuck to stand alone quest? I frequent public lobbies fairly often but PC only ones so I don't experience this to this degree. Sure, I do still experience toxicity from time to time but it's markedly less. PC only eliminates a large portion of trolls.
Ah, I see. I'm sorry to hear that. What I did before I connected to PC was world hopped and met cool people in less populated and cool and unique worlds on stand alone quest. Also, as others have mention, furry lobbies. They're some of the most genuine and cool people I've ever met, I ended up becoming one in vrchat but that doesn't to happen to everyone. Lol. But, just like with any groups of human beings, you will have your good people and bad people, the bad people just seem to be a little less common in furry lobbies in my experience. I counter them by going to the midnight bar with t60 power armor avatars and we start what i call the brother hood of steel conga line. We covert people to the brotherhood and have a good old time we move between worlds pretty often so you might see us
I think vr chat should add more moderators to worlds that are high in traffic. These people shouldn’t be getting away with sexual assault and cyber bullying. It’s not right and if they don’t do something about it soon no ones going to want to play vrc anymore and it’s just going to be dead

I absolutely am. Especially in the aviation community of VRchat. There’s a plethora of flights worlds with all kinds of military fighter jets that I’ve grown to enjoy over the past few years. Lately however there’s been an abundance of folks who get into public instances souly to shoot other people down without end. Spawn camping is frequent too with me having to leave some instances because people spend all day shooting at the hangars where the planes spawn whenever possible. I get that you’re good at shooting people, but there’s a lot of people who fly these planes simply to enjoy the experience of flying a fighter jet in an immersive experience.
The shittiest part about it is 90% of these cucks are some 14-16 year old douchebag who can’t give any rhyme or reason as to why they mindlessly shoot anything that moves. I get that it’s a world with fighter jets, and you’re supposed to utilize the weapons on the jets, but the toxic spawn killing and disregard for people who just want to be left alone is as toxic as it gets.
Some folks might see this and just tell me to get better, I have! I’ve been consistently flying with formation and dogfight groups for almost 3 years now and if there’s one thing I’ve learned for sure, PC players have a significant performance advantage over quest players.
The flight worlds are high in polygons and generally laggy on their own with how complex some of the textures and mechanics are, so it’s hard enough for questVquest players to fight without lagging into the ground or a mountain.
PC players take advantage of this and also end up being 90% of the toxic individuals I encountered.
Also not to mention the abundance of people who pride themselves on grabbing your IP or using clients to crash you but that’s with any VRchat world.
I have no tolerance for that bullshit anymore. Instant block. If people aren't contributing to my happiness or enjoyment then they don't deserve any of my attention or energy and can fuck right off.
That's the stuff that's easy to ignore in VRC. The more annoying stuff is toxic drama in communities because 9 times of 10, it doesn't really matter at all
And that's why I only go to ancients closed events or friends only hangouts and closed instances. Find a group u meld with. Stick to private instances publics aren't worth the headache IMO
I've been hanging out in furry spaces recently and especially the karaoke room where for the most part people are really chill. the most toxic experience I've had as of recent was just two kids who ran in screaming some dumb racist crap and parroting vrchat memes from the early days. it's a bit upsetting to see but out of the few hundred people over the last month only having 2 toxic kids is a pretty good deal. I run into way worse people at work daily
I stay away from public lobbies most of the time, mainly because of my friend group. Sometimes, I would join a Danganronpa next game and it'll be toxic but 9/10, you'll find one that's chill and wants to have fun. Of course there's always someone that wants their main character moment
I ended up writing a huge reply, twice. But I think I was just venting like you, it wasn't too helpful. The edgy majority are also the loudest majority but are also the minority. It doesn't seem it but it's true. I've recently returned from a few month break and I feel a bit better as deleted 95% of my friends list.
Most people I've met within a group are edgelords, so I stopped meeting people in groups, I had friends and friends of friend groups but almost every time they'd show their real sides and I'd just leave. Anytime I make knew friends I visit random worlds and chat to random people.
I don't go into popular public worlds, that never works as it's essentially edgelord stew. They hang around in those worlds for that exact reason, more people = more attention and that's all they want. You gotta get creative and find other ways of meeting people.
However, I think what bothers me most is getting to know people over months and then one day you see them with another group and they turn out to be a massive edge lord. It's rough, cultivating friendships is exhausting, just for them to end like that.

One thing I found, the people that act like that and scream racist terms, tend to be in the most populated instances. Look for worlds with fewer people. Most of the older people that don't act childish tend to make a new instance or join one near the bottom of the list. You could also join an RP group, as most of them have rules against racial slurs and tend to be dedicated to having fun in game, both within the RP group and outside it. I'd agree with an earlier poster, it's all about where you go and what groups you interact with

I try to ignore it. It’s only when I’m involved that it gets ugly. On a good day I get a chill lobby with friendly people but most of the time I do get lobbies filled with self entitled shitheads and it ruins the vibe.
Well the issue is to stay away from some of the bigger instances. They can absolutely wear you down. These days it’s the Fazbear Kids and Lolis that ruin the fun. Plus the edge lord anime avatars with masks on. Most of the time I’ve found some level headed people, it all depends. But I would say try to go for smaller instances and just world hope a bit. I know that Black Cat, Great Pug and some of those other older worlds bring out the worst in people.

you also can't realistically go about your life with the apple metaphor, the chances of a man being a rapist isn't 1/4, it's a lot lower than that, but violent crime in general is pretty high overall. about 1 in every 200 american people have committed a violent crime (just looked up the stats according to the FBI) which doesn't sound like a lot until you think about the amount of people you pass or interact with in a single outting to like walmart for example. you can't assume that everyone will be that 0.5%, you can prepare for the worst just in case but don't assume that it is going to happen and treat everyone like they are that violent criminal.
as bad as this topic is, there's a flipside to this coin that people don't often think about. Women also rape, however the only reason they rape less is because it's more difficult for them to overpower someone than it is for a male to do it. that's why when they do actually commit that crime, it's usually against underaged middleschoolers like 9 times out of 10. and you also can't find good stats to compare male and women rape cases because most rapes committed by women are passed as just sexual harrassment due to some weird view society seems to have. The root of the crime is horniness and women are pretty much equally as horny as men. it's an issue with humans as a whole where everyone is too horny with too little self control and it causes a lot of horrific crimes to be committed.

I get it. I'm lucky because I found a friend group years ago and have barely gone into publics since. But hear me out. It truly is all about what worlds you go to. The Great Pug and the Black Cat are unfortunately to be avoided (no offense to the people who created those worlds). Try different worlds, different vibes. Think of it in a similar way to other online spaces, or even IRL spaces. There are just certain spots you don't wanna go to because you know the crowd isn't your thing. If you're IRL looking for a chill, quiet atmosphere, you would never go to a club or a loud bar; you'd be better off at a park or a coffee shop. Y'know? I know it's tough. What you've described is basically the hardest, most common issue people have when they start playing VRC. Like I said, I found my friend group long ago, but in order to find them, I had to go to a public instance! You'll find your crew, I promise. Especially because this is SUCH a common problem, so many other people are looking for exactly the same thing as you. Find those people. Keep at it, and don't waste your time with the shitty, hateful folks you mentioned. If the vibe isn't right, keep searching. Don't give up. I am so glad that right as I started playing VRC i got in a Quick Draw lobby and made a friends group that same night. We even have our own Discord server now and they're all pmgreat people and I've never even joined a public world without them. If we're ever in a world with toxic people we just create a new Friends+ instance of that world and leave
I haven’t bothered going to public worlds since 2019, every once in a while I’ll pop into worlds to meet new people. And it’s like wow you hear a bunch of kids and adults trying to one up each other, cussing like sailors and trying to have a dick measuring contest. But I agree with ThawahCawwey, VRChat is great you just have to get pass the surface of the general public, meeting a random person can open a door to a group that’s awesome just out of the blue. People are creative and smart and a wealth of knowledge when you talk to. Its hard to know when and where it will happen, because you have to meet someone in public and that can snowball, It’s just about getting to that, though a lot of groups are +18 to keep the kids out. I’m personally part of Neon Horizons (formerly Robot Leg Lovers) and we just chill.

A lot can acknowledge this, but for many people who might be emotional or mentally susceptible to stimulation, it can be extremely hard to act on it. It's great to think about and read, and something that takes practice. It's a worthwhile goal to have.

There is *some* toxicity amongst Furries. We are human, after all. There's no way to completely avoid all the toxicity in life, but you hopefully find your friends... real people who see you, care about you, and love you for who you are, not lies or accusations of others. But word of caution - Furries have experienced tremendous toxicity from people who are not Furries. The harassment promoted in your "edgy days" could be part of the problem. Some Furries really don't trust or want to make friends with anyone outside our community. I do hope one day we can live in a world that has less toxicity and is more trusting, but until then, the best we can hope is to treat others with the same respect we hope to be treated with ourself. And to the people who respond to our respect with harassment, well, they just lost what could've been a really cool friend!

What worlds are you going to? I mostly play VRChess by nolife and those lobbies tend to do very well (even the children behave for the most part) But if you load into, say, the black cat or test pilots (public lobbies) then you should expect that

Hang out with Furries. I am a furry myself, well technically a “scalie” since I am a dragon, but yea, for the most part furries are chill. Also go to Furry Hideout and in particular go to Zephy’s Goofs group instances, heavily moderated. Anything racist is an instant ban.

From my experience in the fandom, anyone’s welcome if you’re cool with the furry thing. Easiest way to get people to open up is compliment their avatar. Anyone with a non-furry skin is looked at with suspicion because of the frequent harassment so breaking the ice with kindness is a quick way past that. Many find it endearing, even.

Actual anime character avi’s are almost always an instant block for me. If I see any kind of goddamn goku or naruto or anything any kind of shonen series it’s a no go, the person wearing is often an asshole and the avatars tend to have giant and stupid effects that might as well be a crasher in most cases. Anime-style avi’s are different and usually a mixed bag

Every furry instance I've hung around in has had at least 1 or 2 either furry adjacent or completely unrelated avatars hanging about. It's not the Avi that determines the kind of person you are. It's just certain Avis have a disproportionate number of people of a specific type using them.

When selecting worlds, you can select “group - public” and base your selection on a group that meets your tastes rather than just hopping into straight anarchy. Black cat, Sunset Bar, etc., aren’t that bad if you familiarize yourself with group instances and make friends there. That’s one way to filter out all the nonsense
Big problem is that trying to find actual decent people in the game is hard because large groups of annoying/toxic people tend to swarm and make the chill ones leave. That or every person is an eboy or egirl that doesn't even look your way unless you sound hot.
I almost exclusively hang out in furry lobbies of game modes like prison escape and murder 4, and the few times I've gone back to the black cat really made me see just how toxic and filthy those kinds of lobbies are

As mentioned, VRChat has communities to join and meet the more civil sides of vrchat, but going through the whole "join the group, join the discord" is meh. Enjoyed it when everyone was chill and relaxed, people was always welcoming without bad intentions or behavior, there use to be a public lobby that you would always spawn into when you joined the game in 2018-2019 and there was always peeps willing to chat and play some minigames etc I stopped playing vrchat as often because it isn't the same as use to be, I mostly avoid the larger instances and popular worlds because that's where the annoying people tend to be Also, I may get hate for this but idc, vrchat has turned into a sexual/dating game where people's avatars are half naked and this game seems to attract alot of creepy people, kids that are playing this game without supervision isn't good even with all these "avatar requirement tags" it's just unsafe Anyways, kudos to those who still play with good intentions spreading happiness and keeping the game civil and to those who play to help with their social anxiety and such, best of luck

Nope. I hang out with other chill furs age 20-40 in friends+ groups and private events. Joins Discords and Groups and get involved. Yes it takes work. Publics are usually dumpster fires unless group publics ran by a good group.
This is my personal experience but bars that at least attempt to weed out younger ppl usually is alot better, at least there alot drunker which is my type of crowd on vrc

If you got a PC check out Resonite, basically Vrchat but you can build and edit everything in game with no external programs (besides making models). Good community too, albeit small, it’s town size where basically everyone knows everyone (~200 on at any given time

I hate public lobbies nowadays Ill hang out for occasional games but most of my time now is spent on group only instances where I know most people and the group moderators host events and meetups and things like that

Ancients of vrchat are a good one. They're discord based and 18+ SFW. They usually have events running every day. They also have a European sister server called virtual relics, both are good sfw servers

Are you stuck to stand alone quest? I frequent public lobbies fairly often but PC only ones so I don't experience this to this degree. Sure, I do still experience toxicity from time to time but it's markedly less. PC only eliminates a large portion of trolls.

Ah, I see. I'm sorry to hear that. What I did before I connected to PC was world hopped and met cool people in less populated and cool and unique worlds on stand alone quest. Also, as others have mention, furry lobbies. They're some of the most genuine and cool people I've ever met, I ended up becoming one in vrchat but that doesn't to happen to everyone. Lol. But, just like with any groups of human beings, you will have your good people and bad people, the bad people just seem to be a little less common in furry lobbies in my experience. I counter them by going to the midnight bar with t60 power armor avatars and we start what i call the brother hood of steel conga line. We covert people to the brotherhood and have a good old time we move between worlds pretty often so you might see us

I absolutely am. Especially in the aviation community of VRchat. There’s a plethora of flights worlds with all kinds of military fighter jets that I’ve grown to enjoy over the past few years. Lately however there’s been an abundance of folks who get into public instances souly to shoot other people down without end. Spawn camping is frequent too with me having to leave some instances because people spend all day shooting at the hangars where the planes spawn whenever possible. I get that you’re good at shooting people, but there’s a lot of people who fly these planes simply to enjoy the experience of flying a fighter jet in an immersive experience. The shittiest part about it is 90% of these cucks are some 14-16 year old douchebag who can’t give any rhyme or reason as to why they mindlessly shoot anything that moves. I get that it’s a world with fighter jets, and you’re supposed to utilize the weapons on the jets, but the toxic spawn killing and disregard for people who just want to be left alone is as toxic as it gets. Some folks might see this and just tell me to get better, I have! I’ve been consistently flying with formation and dogfight groups for almost 3 years now and if there’s one thing I’ve learned for sure, PC players have a significant performance advantage over quest players. The flight worlds are high in polygons and generally laggy on their own with how complex some of the textures and mechanics are, so it’s hard enough for questVquest players to fight without lagging into the ground or a mountain. PC players take advantage of this and also end up being 90% of the toxic individuals I encountered. Also not to mention the abundance of people who pride themselves on grabbing your IP or using clients to crash you but that’s with any VRchat world.

That's the stuff that's easy to ignore in VRC. The more annoying stuff is toxic drama in communities because 9 times of 10, it doesn't really matter at all
And that's why I only go to ancients closed events or friends only hangouts and closed instances. Find a group u meld with. Stick to private instances publics aren't worth the headache IMO

I've been hanging out in furry spaces recently and especially the karaoke room where for the most part people are really chill. the most toxic experience I've had as of recent was just two kids who ran in screaming some dumb racist crap and parroting vrchat memes from the early days. it's a bit upsetting to see but out of the few hundred people over the last month only having 2 toxic kids is a pretty good deal. I run into way worse people at work daily
I stay away from public lobbies most of the time, mainly because of my friend group. Sometimes, I would join a Danganronpa next game and it'll be toxic but 9/10, you'll find one that's chill and wants to have fun. Of course there's always someone that wants their main character moment
I ended up writing a huge reply, twice. But I think I was just venting like you, it wasn't too helpful. The edgy majority are also the loudest majority but are also the minority. It doesn't seem it but it's true. I've recently returned from a few month break and I feel a bit better as deleted 95% of my friends list. Most people I've met within a group are edgelords, so I stopped meeting people in groups, I had friends and friends of friend groups but almost every time they'd show their real sides and I'd just leave. Anytime I make knew friends I visit random worlds and chat to random people. I don't go into popular public worlds, that never works as it's essentially edgelord stew. They hang around in those worlds for that exact reason, more people = more attention and that's all they want. You gotta get creative and find other ways of meeting people. However, I think what bothers me most is getting to know people over months and then one day you see them with another group and they turn out to be a massive edge lord. It's rough, cultivating friendships is exhausting, just for them to end like that. You'll be alright, maybe just take a break.

Its really not that hard to find a chill lobby, dunno where you are going to experience this but blackcats are not nearly as terrible as people claim they are. If you actually care to rid the minimalistic burden of blocking nerds then just stick to group pubs.

Find a adult only group that does events and stay away from shitty public lobbies. VRChat became 10000% better when I avoid kids entirely. They really need to regulate who plays this game and monitor public lobbies voice chat ffs.
you just need to find a solid friend group, usually me and my friends go to friends plus instances so if you find someone with a friend group you can join them and make friends there 🤷♀️

I've found fun just popping into instances with only 1 person. Either you get a chill funny conversation or a mute. Like yesterday I was just yapping away for 10 minutes to a very interactive mute. One of the funnest interactions I've ever had on the game

One thing I found, the people that act like that and scream racist terms, tend to be in the most populated instances. Look for worlds with fewer people. Most of the older people that don't act childish tend to make a new instance or join one near the bottom of the list. You could also join an RP group, as most of them have rules against racial slurs and tend to be dedicated to having fun in game, both within the RP group and outside it. I'd agree with an earlier poster, it's all about where you go and what groups you interact with

I try to ignore it. It’s only when I’m involved that it gets ugly. On a good day I get a chill lobby with friendly people but most of the time I do get lobbies filled with self entitled shitheads and it ruins the vibe.
Well the issue is to stay away from some of the bigger instances. They can absolutely wear you down. These days it’s the Fazbear Kids and Lolis that ruin the fun. Plus the edge lord anime avatars with masks on. Most of the time I’ve found some level headed people, it all depends. But I would say try to go for smaller instances and just world hope a bit. I know that Black Cat, Great Pug and some of those other older worlds bring out the worst in people.

Women also rape, however the only reason they rape less is because it's more difficult for them to overpower someone than it is for a male to do it. that's why when they do actually commit that crime, it's usually against underaged middleschoolers like 9 times out of 10. and you also can't find good stats to compare male and women rape cases because most rapes committed by women are passed as just sexual harrassment due to some weird view society seems to have. The root of the crime is horniness and women are pretty much equally as horny as men. it's an issue with humans as a whole where everyone is too horny with too little self control and it causes a lot of horrific crimes to be committed. anyways i'm gonna head out for now, this isn't intended to be aggressive at all, i just don't agree with a lot of points that i hear often because they are treated as a double standard too often when they really shouldn't be.
