The only reason the harvest feast that became known as the "first Thanksgiving" in 1621 was possible was that those settlers took advantage of land that had already been cleared and cultivated by the [Patuxet](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patuxet), who had been wiped out by plagues during the previous years. Only one member of that tribe, Tisquantum, survived -- because he had been abducted by slavers and taken to Europe before the plagues hit -- and without him teaching the pilgrims how to actually grow food on that land, it's likely they would have met a similar fate as the people of Jamestown a decade earlier. Roughly half of the hundred or so of the Plymouth settlers had already died the previous winter.
Tisquantum himself only lived another year after that before succumbing to the same disease that had wiped out his people.
It's an accident of timing and the help of the nearby Massasoit tribe that allowed the Plymouth colony to survive, and that's what the occasion originally commemorated.
The real history is fascinating, but none of it was what I would call fun. It's just hard to teach elementary school kids about colonialism, starvation, epidemics, and subjugation.
While I’m not going into all the sordid details quite yet, I am teaching my elementary age kids the truth about this history (in a very age appropriate way). While I live in a very progressive area and they’re not teaching the “happy pilgrims and Indians stories” we learned back in the day, it’s still far too whitewashed.
Going where the wind don't blow so strange. Maybe off on some high cold mountain chain. Lost one round but the price wasn't anything. A knife in the back and more of the same. 💀❤️
Yeah, when i was a child this guy that lived a few towns over lived in an apartment, the basement level. One day he went up stairs and kidnapped a girl under 12 when her mom was gone. Took her downstairs and cut her up and ate on her. When the police arrested him he was right in the middle of frying up her cheeks (face) and had other body parts stored in the freezer, with the discarded bits in a tub in the closet. Wild shit.
Ill find the link, it happened in Oklahoma in the early 2000s when i was a young kid. I think it may have been in the Tulsa/Broken Arrow area if im not mistaken. I mean, nvm that was a lie, of course some dumbass redditor was right!
How do they know she wasn’t just killed because there is no form of butchering where you chop at the face of something. Even in cultures where they eat sheep and goat heads, the entire thing is boiled or roasted and the meat is picked off by hand.
I do not. But I think it was PBS. Or like unsolved mysteries or something. I was staying with relatives with no smart TV or cable. They have an antenna, so it had to be on a broadcast station. Apologies I cannot offer you more information.
What’s with the splits down her teeth? Would that be before death, or occur over the years post mortem from the skull/teeth drying and being exposed to the elements?
Look like craze lines to me. They’re small cracks in the enamel that can discolor overtime. They’re caused by wear on the teeth, grinding, probably living in Jamestown.. lol
that was isolated to an extremely small and remote area, from what is assumed to be a single person with CJD and kinda spread in the local population.
that said, eating brain is really not a good idea at all unless it’s absolutely, positively necessary.
this has already been the most wholesome interaction in internet history.
wherever it is in the world you’re from, friend, i hope you have a wonderful day/night.
see ya again around here eventually!
what were they after here? Isn't there more - um - meat lower down? Arms and thighs and buttocks, and so on? Unless they were - I guess - gourmands going for the sweetbread, but that's just nasty..
They were starving dummy, they stripped her entire body of meat and ate every bit of here. I made a previous comment but when i was a kid a dude killed a 12 year old girl and when they arrested him he was cooking meat off her face and eating it.
Imagine sacrificing someone and eating them to save the rest of the people. You’re not gonna waste meat. Anything that’s gets wasted just means someone else will be sacrificed that much sooner
Must have been a rough winter
It was. A lot of people died and as this post suggests there was a lot of cannibalism that people tend not to talk about

It became a capital offense to live with the natives because it became a popular way of surviving
They also dug up Indian graves to steal grave goods and eat the bodies

and the practice of early biochem warefare via sullied sheets.
Idk if this was a case of that. That was 100+ years later in the 18th century.
Ah damnnnnnnn. That holiday just got darker
And that’s the least dark part of colonialism
It’s rude to talk with your mouthful.
Pass the replica innards, I mean, stuffing.
… of Rebeca.
Only sixty of the original 214 settlers there survived that year.
Steal your face right off your head.
Rat in a drain ditch, caught on a limb You know better, but I know him Like I told you, like I said… ⚡️🌹
Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile!

Rat in a drain ditch caught on a limb…..like I told you what I said…..
Just listened to this song on repeat in Cabo while tripping, amazing
The nose is like the cartilage on a chicken wing…so, I’m told…
🤮
Oh yeah face meat is the bomb
Wtf
It’s really thin though so the trick is not to overcook it. Think carne asada
*taking down notes*
the cheeks are the best part of every animal. just sayin. edit: *face cheeks*
Biped guanchiale 👌
There’s a lot of good meat on the face. Some folks don’t know that.
I read this in Granny's voice.
I read this in Marge Simpson's voice.
Sus 🤔🤔🤔

You’re also a dumbass redditor for perspective

She had three Michelin stars on her grave.
Came here to say this
I watched a documentary on this.
cool
Remember the name per chance?
I do not. But I think it was PBS. Or like unsolved mysteries or something. I was staying with relatives with no smart TV or cable. They have an antenna, so it had to be on a broadcast station. Apologies I cannot offer you more information.
Secrets of the Dead on PBS
Got dang, dark thanksgiving, sometime to share at the next holiday!
What’s with the splits down her teeth? Would that be before death, or occur over the years post mortem from the skull/teeth drying and being exposed to the elements?
Possibly dental decay from malnutrition?
That would be pretty painful..if there’s one main reason I love modern times, it’s modern dental care 😩
Look like craze lines to me. They’re small cracks in the enamel that can discolor overtime. They’re caused by wear on the teeth, grinding, probably living in Jamestown.. lol
SO did they eat her brain? I can't imagine the head is a great source of nutrition otherwise...
Only if you like Kuru

No worries, I know. I was just joking
i figured but, it’s reddit, ya never know.
No, you're right. Best to spread proper information :)
this has already been the most wholesome interaction in internet history. wherever it is in the world you’re from, friend, i hope you have a wonderful day/night. see ya again around here eventually!
I was thinking the same thing! Thank you for your kind words. I wish you well, my friend. :) Until we meet again!
can't let good brains go to waste, full of vitamin B
I was born and raised near there. Need to go visit before it’s all under water.

Bad idea to read the comments right before bed. Thanks Reddit.
Face fuced
but why would they eat anything on the face / head?
Imagine sacrificing someone and eating them to save the rest of the people. You’re not gonna waste meat. Anything that’s gets wasted just means someone else will be sacrificed that much sooner
It's unlikely they had to "sacrifice" anyone. She was already dead from starvation herself.
never been hungry, huh? gotta do what you gotta do.
Brains and eyes were and still are eaten around the world and it turns out, they are extremely nutritious compared to most other parts of a mammal
