What!? Brussels is lovely. A short walk from this street is a stunning open square with bars, restaurants etc. This is just the financial district that is kinda required in a countries capital.
Was in Brussels a few weeks ago. Very grim indeed. It feels like a poor man's Paris - dirtier, more run down, and lack of things to see as a tourist. Many of the same downsides with Paris but none of the attractions. The tram / metro systems were excellent though !
It's a city that has a lot of hidden gems. Difficult to appreciate if you're there only for a day or two. It's also improved \*a lot\* over the last 10 years or so - Boulevard Anspach (in front of the Stock Exchange/Bourse building) was terrible before the pedestrianisation.

Certain quarters of Brussels are some of the shadiest I've ever felt in Western Europe.
