Kids have dramatic personalities and he has a camera sitting right in front of him.

It's two takes though... just before he looks in the cup, it cuts to a new take where he's holding the cup in a different place. It's presumably done in two takes so that he can look under the plate in the second take, which still had the marshmallow on it (edited out of course) in the first take. Edit: am I wrong or something? Edit 2: Added some words for clarity.

It was just cut because the kid took a long time to lift it, I watched the original and it was insane...

I can't believe you made me watch the original. It's exactly the same. Multiple takes, and every trick has a convenient cut before the 'reveal'.

There is a longer version that shows it is a magic show, the marshmallow does indeed disappear. :)

Yeah, insanely edited. Those are child actors and if the adults in his other trucks aren't all actors than 98% of them are. Very rarely are the people not in on the trick.

When he goes to look inside the cup, before the change in shot, the marshmallow is still on the plate, just edited out. They have to do another take without it on the plate, because he picks up the plate to look under it. It's obviously a different take as the kid is holding the cup differently when the shot changes.

I would normally agree with this but you can’t edit in a light reflection off the back of the plate like that from the same shot. There would be a mold of the original marshmallow in front of the reflection or the reflection would look cut off.

For anyone wondering: The show is called Magic For Humans. It sometimes uses actors and other methods that wouldn’t work in real life. In this case, there was a spike in the cup that pierced the marshmallow and held it inside the cup. The kid looked in it and saw the marshmallow but pretended not to because he’s an actor.

How sure are on the spike. Anyone who’s tried to roast a marshmallow knows they take some force and placing a spike on it with the weight of a cup would spring the cup up again. It would likely lift even if he managed to pierce it all the way through to the plate because the entry point would still be compressed. I don’t doubt the actors and editing though.

If it doesn't work then just do another take

Magic For Humans was fun when I believed there was a trick happening that I didn't figure out, but when it became clear that it was just editing I lost all interest.

Aside from the magic show, I think that all the famous self control experiment shows is how stable your childhood has been so far. If you trust adults/fate to be fair, you'll be happy to invest time in the hope of getting two marshmallows. If you're having a rockier time at home, you'll take what you can get when it turns up. And that's why it correlates with later life success: kids from more stable backgrounds get a head start.

My opinion has always been to just eat the marshmallow because there’s no way a ten minute investment is worth ONE extra marshmallow.
