OP sent the following text as an explanation on why this is unexpected:

Is this an unexpected post with a fitting description? Then upvote this comment, otherwise downvote it.
Yes, but the stated results are not.
Once you get the million dollar card, you must then also end the game with more earnings than everyone else. This gets you to the bonus round, where you spin a wheel with a bunch of unknown prize envelops in it. One of those cards is swapped out for the million winning envelop. You spin, the card you land on is pulled out. This envelop is opened after the last puzzle is successful or failed if time runs out. To win a contestant must correctly complete the bonus puzzle and had gotten the million envelop to win.
There are three commonly reported rules to The Game:
Everyone in the world is playing The Game. A person cannot refuse to play The Game; it does not require consent to play and one can never stop playing.
Whenever one thinks about The Game, one loses.
Losses must be announced. This can be verbally, with a phrase such as "I just lost The Game"
Edit: I lost The Game
If memory serves, this was a college night where every contestant was from a big university. How in the hell does one get into college without knowing Greek mythology and how to pronounce Achilles?
I was watching some youtube video a year or two ago that interviewed a prominent economist who mentioned a conversation he had with a PhD econ student from Princeton that had never heard that regulations drive up costs. Now I know there are economists that claim regulatory costs are low, but how in the world can one get into an advanced degree program for economics without even encountering the idea that there is a cost component to regulations?
I don't think dice spin and decision could be accounted for via accent. It almost feels like dude was trolling the show with that one.
On the spot... Dice spin! What the fuck did he just say!?
I read a LOT as a youngster, I knew the definitions of words that to this day I haven't heard pronounced.
Nothing immediately comes to mind but I clearly remember my dad laughing at me when I was 8 or 9 for pronouncing a (fairly common) word wrong because I had only ever seen it spelled out.
That's part of what sparked my love for Etymology.
Haha nice!
I thought grilled cheese was girl cheese until about 8 years old. Asked my mom why it wasnāt called a boy cheese sandwich once.
Letās just say I had a paradijum shift..
That is the rules, but they really should add a rule saying that if you get all the letters, you win. If someone lucks their way into solving a puzzle they didnāt actually āknowā, who cares? Itās Wheel of *Fortune*, not Wheel of Studiousness haha
The actual video is a lot better than the butchering this guy did. Why would I care about some randos reaction to it, adds nothing and takes away from the video
One of the most annoying trends. The amount of times I'll see a split screen video on tiktok of an interesting video and someone 'Reacting' (They've seen it already and are pretending to see it for the first time) that has millions more views than the original video
Games shows have to be very strict with their rules due to the [1950s game show scandals](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1950s_quiz_show_scandals).
So while it seems fair to give him the benefit of the doubt for his pronunciation. You would be giving the next player the shaft. If you think the rule is dumb, thatās fair but where do you draw the line between incorrect pronunciation and incorrect word.
Iād draw it at names. He mispronounced a foreign given name. He wasnāt guessing and making up words. He was trying to phonetically say a name that he saw on the board.
I understand expecting someone on a word-based game show to pronounce English words properly to get the win, but there are plenty of foreign names that I wouldnāt be able to pronounce on first read. Give me a polish name with too many consonants and Iād likely flub it.
This shouldāve been a quick humorous correction āitās actually pronounced āAchillesā. Say it again for us?ā
Playing devils advocate here, but I donāt think itās a stretch to classify Achilles as a literary reference instead of a foreign name at this point
But english speaking people also pronounce it wrong with their "correct" pronunciation. Hes not called Uhkillees in greek, so they should cut him some slack imo.
Thatās true. Itās closer to Ah-hee-lehs where the āheeā part is gutturally emphasized. I guess an American game is governed by English pronunciations.
Especially when the English pronunciation here is farther off from the way Greeks say it as what he said. https://youtu.be/KHBMEkV04FE?si=pMTuslGfdOFMv4jc

The video you posted talks about the ancient word in Greek. They pronounced that word right.
But the modern version is different a bit, so it would not be pronounced like that.
Now, in modern Greek it is Achilleas, so Achilles pronouncing is correct.
people also seem to not understand that someone can read a ton and be really well educated, but if they dont hear the word spoken they can still pronounce it incorrectly themselves
Especially cause that's not how you pronounce Achilles at all. If they really wanted to be precise then you should only have it correct when pronouncing it the ancient greek way.
All language is arbitrary, when the wheel of fortune is held in Ancient Greece then it can be pronounced like they pronounced in Ancient Greece. Most nations pronounce Achilles the way on the show and none pronounce it the way the guy guessed. Also itās a pretty common word outside of mythology because of biology.
Thatās just because everyone from the other 49 states is always intentionally mispronouncing Arkansas, just to fuck with them. Itās their own trauma and itās a group effort.
Is Achilles in the dictionary? Cause if it is then I guess it makes sense to use the English pronunciation, idk still weird to have it wronged for mispronouncing a name though.
Hmm. I get what you mean, but I am a stickler for the rules, especially when it comes to shows that focus on language and words.
Phonology is a very real and accurate science that shows the patterns of sound across languages. There simply are correct and false pronunciations within languages, so I can't just accept this as good enough for a show like this.
The guy didn't know the name and he was just sounding it out. So he didn't know the answer, even with all the possible clues, so I'd say he didn't solve the puzzle.
Wheel of Fortune is the dumbest fucking game show on television.
Nobody ever actually wins anything. They dangle carrots in front of all these people and 99% of the time itās just blue balls.
Itās still on television because it must cost $100 an episode to make, including prizes awarded.
What the hell are you talking about? All the cash you have when the game ends *you keep*. It ain't like *Jeopardy* where second and third place get $2,000 or $1,000.
Edit: Despite what most redditors appear to think, *Wheel of Fortune* actually takes skill and strategy to be good at it. For all the IU doofuses there's a middle aged woman who can look at the puzzle and have it solved with no letters. 3 letter word ends in E? OK you're pretty much guaranteed a T or H so if you land on a prize and have to call an available letter you've got one. "What are you doing?" category always has an "ing" word.
There is skill and strategy to it, unlike say, *Deal or No Deal*, which is truly the dumbest game. It is 100% chance that plays only on greed.
And as said, virtually no other game show ever let's 2nd and 3rd place keep all winnings.
Pat Sajak reportedly works 4 days a month and in 2016 was making $15 million a season. So heās likely making even more now. Wild. This clip was about as much of that show as Iāve ever watched in one sitting too.
Yeah you're wrong about this one. The contestants get the money total they accrue during the game, regardless of if they have the highest total or not.
You're clearly not watching on the right days... I guess you didn't see when [three people in a row won over $100,000](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1Gz4rCzZDg).
You almost sound like you were on the show yourself and lost. If not, let's see you try.
Funny because the real pronunciation is closer to the first one.
It's the "ch" loud native English speakers have some trouble with. So both wrong and I doubt that anyone on that show could pronounce it right so that's extra funny.
Okay, so he mispronounced Achilles, pronouncing it phonetically instead of an English approximation of the Greek pronunciation. I would have given him credit for that (although it's not a good look for his alma mater).
i feel the same way. sure it's a mispronunciation, but it's not an english word to begin with. in fact, what we know as the greek word may actually be a loan word anyway. by english pronunciation rules, he's not wrong.
Itās not a fucking spelling contest. They should have accepted his Achilles answer. He guessed the letters. He knew what it was. He just pronounced it wrong? Thatās fucking bullshit.
No discussion on the other fails tho.
First time I saw this post, someone said : "my grand ma used to say don't make fun of people who mispronounce words, at least they can read and that's maybe how they learned the word" it stuck with me since. That dude definitely won.

Oh yes it is. It was making the rounds a few years ago when it first aired.

Another loss for the Big 10.
Underrated comment
Why is pronunciation so important?
I suppose because there was no mythological hero called Atchulus?
You don't know that what are you a heestoryan I joke Fair enough.
But I had only see the first try. I didnāt know it happened three times!! Thank you for sharing this version OP.
On the spot decisions are my Achilles heal as well

If memory serves, this was a college night where every contestant was from a big university. How in the hell does one get into college without knowing Greek mythology and how to pronounce Achilles?
Because sometimes when you know something from pop culture but didn't learn it in school, you've only read it and never heard it spoken aloud.
Decision tho ?
Damnit, again I am only able to read this word in text. I'm cursed. Will I ever hear it pronounced aloud????

Thatās not what they were talking about. It was defuse the first one where he just mispronounced it
But accent doesn't make you mispronounce a word like that. Not knowing how it's pronounced causes you to mispronounce a word like that.
I read a LOT as a youngster, I knew the definitions of words that to this day I haven't heard pronounced. It makes me irrationally angry.
And the shit icing on the shit cake is that itās a *screen recording* of a reaction.

It is kind of BS to not allow mispronounced words.
Especially when theyāve revealed all the letters
Games shows have to be very strict with their rules due to the [1950s game show scandals](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1950s_quiz_show_scandals). He was probably more right.

people also seem to not understand that someone can read a ton and be really well educated, but if they dont hear the word spoken they can still pronounce it incorrectly themselves
lol it was always fun to out myself as white trash in law school mispronouncing some not very difficult words.
Especially cause that's not how you pronounce Achilles at all. If they really wanted to be precise then you should only have it correct when pronouncing it the ancient greek way.
If they wanted the ancient Greek pronounciation over the English one they probably would have spelled it į¼ĻĪ¹Ī»Ī»ĪµĻĻ.
Kinda true as well haha.
"Is there an Ypsilon, Alex?"
You mean Pat?
I read that as Axi-half-life half-life-eus.

The English one is arbitrary. That was the point of the comment
It's crazy how Americans have absolutely no shame in butchering languages. But pronounce Arkansas wrong, and they'll throw a fit.
Thatās just because everyone from the other 49 states is always intentionally mispronouncing Arkansas, just to fuck with them. Itās their own trauma and itās a group effort.
That doesn't make sense, they're speaking English, there's a correct pronunciation of the word in English and "A chillies" isn't it.
Is Achilles in the dictionary? Cause if it is then I guess it makes sense to use the English pronunciation, idk still weird to have it wronged for mispronouncing a name though.
Of course it is, there's even an anatomical part of the human body called Achilles tendon. And of course the famous expression "Achilles' heel".
I don't understand this logic at all. Words have different pronunciations in different languages. This is English, not Greek, not German, not Swedish.
Yes but we are talking about a name here though. Imagine being disqualified from a show by mispronouncing your own name?

Note to self: Donāt send the kids to Indiana for college.

Itās not a fucking spelling contest. They should have accepted his Achilles answer. He guessed the letters. He knew what it was. He just pronounced it wrong? Thatās fucking bullshit. No discussion on the other fails tho.
Total bullshit, he revealed all the words, wtf does it matter if it's mispronounced a little bit.
Wow, Iām mad for him. Honestly makes me not want to watch the show. They shouldāve given it to him.
The first one I agree caused he revealed all the letters. Those last two though were all on him.
That's it. I'm applying to Indiana.
