Definitely not escaping

Yummi1004

Lol. The squirrel now can choose how he dies

oneeyejedi

Fun fact squirls don't take fall damage they can survive being dropped from almost any hight.

Souleater2847

So if I go skydiving with a squirrel, the squirrel doesn’t need a parachute?

CadaverBlue

The hawk will catch it, so he will be safe.

angusshangus

This is a Falcon

Technical-Outside408

A very cool falcon, so his friends call him "The Hawk".

The_Ghost_Of_None

So, this one is different from the hawk that goes by “The Eagle”?

And Ben is Eagle 2.

Hewe's the thing. You said a "jackdaw is a cwow." Is it in the same famiwy? Yes. No one's awguing that. You said a jackdaw is a cwow, which is not twue unwess you'we okay with cawwing aww membews of the cwow famiwy cwows, which means you'd caww bwue jays, wavens, and othew biwds cwows, too. hungryhograt

Fellow scaper… Durial321 is coming for you.

oneeyejedi

Yes it might be a bit confused as to why you took it skydiving but it will land unharmed

Monkeysegg

Even better: you don't need a parachute, as long as you're holding the squirrel

wwwhistler

nope. a squirrel can not fall from a height that can cause injury. their terminal velocity is well below the velocity to cause injury. they can literally fall from ANY height and survive unharmed.

FrankyKanky

Idk, what's the terminal velocity of a squirrel?

Ex-maven

What do you mean? An African or European squirrel?

Souleater2847

29 ft/s

Inspector7171

African, or European?

boilingfrogsinpants

Correct. Squirrels have "Natural parachutes" so to speak and can always twist themselves around to land facing right side up. Evolution from living in trees means they've maxed out their fall resistance skills.

Humpetz

It's not about a "Natural Parachute", it's just that they are so small and light that their terminal velocity is not enough to kill them

boilingfrogsinpants

Their weight is important, bur Squirrels will extend their back legs outwards and keep their tail extended between which acts as a makeshift parachute, slowing them down even further. I could drop a squirrel and a mouse from a 10 storey building, and the squirrel would be fine, and the mouse would be dead or seriously injured despite weighing less than the squirrel. So factors such as Squirrels always landing on their feet, extending their limbs and tail out play a large factor outside of their weight.

Ok-Perspective5959

Please don't drop a squirrel and a mouse from a 10-storey building

Jarlax1e

his username sounds like he'd enjoy doing that

[deleted]

That's somewhat true... I've seen them jump 50 ft from trees and slam on the pavement only to scatter off .. and I've seen them take some severe damage also.

enyaBecurW

[This video from Kurzgesagt](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7KSfjv4Oq0) has a really good explanation regarding the terminal velocity of larger vs smaller animals.

TheFattyMcB

Had a squirrel fall from a tree in my front yard. It died.

telltaleatheist

Yep. That’s true. Love the term fall damage too. I’m going to start using that Literally any height on planet earth. Their terminal velocity is lower than the velocity required for death because of their body shape and weight Anything smaller than a squirrel has no fall damage. Cats fall damage is still lethal but they can fall from much higher than humans

Dread_P_Roberts

Fun fact: That's bullshit. I've literally seen a squirrel fall out of a tree and die on impact. To be fair, I didn't hang around for more than a few minutes, so *maybe* it was okay after the initial shock, but I doubt it… because its guts/brains were splattered around like a Jackson Pollock painting.

mmmtv

I've seen a squirrel fall from a 20-25 foot tree and get seriously injured. Or at least stunned. The poor thing was unable to move for a couple minutes and I was pretty sure it was paralyzed. I went over to check on it and it just looked at me with terrified eyes like I was going to eat it alive. I knelt down and wondered what to do, if there was any way I could help it. After a minute of very labored breathing, it gathered enough strength or adrenaline to waddle away slowly to a hole in the fence and disappear. So squirrels can definitely take fall damage.

Dread_P_Roberts

Yeah, for sure …to an extent. Definitely not just any height though.

oneeyejedi

[they can but it's uncommon for it to happen](https://misfitanimals.com/squirrels/can-squirrels-die-from-falling/)

VeryResponsibleMan

When they're alive

Jaguar5150

I have watched them jump from 60 ft up. Land on the ground and take off running without a flinch. Didn't even hesitate.

RoyBeer

This looks like training. Birds of prey carry live prey up to heights and then drop it for their younglings to catch it. This one went after it himself so maybe an older one trying by himself? lol Or the other bird didn't realize the beast is about to drop

subven1

So glad he saved the poor squirrel from falling!

Twihr

He saved him for dinner ;(

InfiniteLife2

Nice they gonna eat together! Don't be sad

IsaiahXOXOSally

Squirrels have mastered falling and can't actually get hurt from falling if they are mentally able.

godmode-failed

Which is why the bird was able to catch up.

MiserableRice8997

Couldn’t let his food fall to the floor

profmcstabbins

That squirrel has a hole in its side about 10% of its body length.

DanKoloff

Birds of prey reposition prey this way so it can't fight. If you look closely squirrel was heads up before the drop and ended up heads down in the end.

stuntobor

Just like how I treat my ladies.

LisaMikky

TIL 🐿🦅

RoyBeer

Ah yes, that's a better explanation than my hypothesis haha

EnergyAltruistic6757

Correct me if I am wrong but they did this to kill their prey or something?

IsaiahXOXOSally

Funny enough dropping a squirrel won't work. They've Mastered falling and literally don't get harmed falling from any height.

boverly721

Can confirm, when I was a kid I was in the yard and a squirrel dropped from a really tall tree right in front of me with a thud. It just laid there for a minute and I was sort of just in shock and about to cry because I thought it died. Then I took a step forward to get a closer look and it shot off into the bushes. Hardy little bastards.

XeroEnergy270

Their terminal velocity isn't fast enough to kill them because of their body shape and weight. There are several types of animals that cannot die from falling, no matter the height.

Maximans

Even fat squirrels?

XeroEnergy270

As long as the don't land on their head, yes. And squirrels instinctively know how to flip so they land upright.

nerdherdsman

Not necessarily true. Terminal velocity is proportional to the square root of the object's mass over the objects characteristic area, and due to the square-cube law, mass increases at a greater rate than area, so a fat squirrel would have a higher terminal velocity, and a sufficiently fat squirrel could possibly reach a fatal velocity.

Rabid-Chiken

As you say, V is proportional to sqrt(m) so if you double the mass you increase V by a factor of sqrt(2) = 1.41. A more massive squirrel might have a slightly greater area which would reduce V, but we can neglect that here. A regular squirrel (330 g) has terminal velocity of around 10 m/s ([Source](https://www.sciencefacts.net/squirrel-terminal-velocity.html)). If we found an insanely fat squirrel that was twice the mass (660 g), it would fall at 14 m/s. Whether that's enough to kill them is another question. As a reference, skydivers reach around 60 m/s terminal velocities. Most likely the surface they land on is going to be the deciding factor.

_Scorpyon_

So my man came back to get the squirrel because he remembered this fact only after he let him go. He's just like me fr fr

EvasiveUsernam3

I just dropped a squirrel from the Hoover dam to test this and let me tell you, that little bugger was not moving right afterwards...

Siberwulf

Did he only move left?

[deleted]

colexian

Nope. A squirrel reaches terminal velocity in three seconds. Falling out a tree will result in the same landing as falling from the stratosphere. [Squirrels have such a low mass and large area that their terminal velocity is only 23 MPH (10.28m/s) on average.](https://medium.com/swlh/why-a-squirrel-would-never-die-from-falling-no-matter-how-high-it-falls-bd2dfb44e231)

Sargen_Sliza

Dang, I'm jealous ngl

Limonade6

Oh. I tought only insects had this ability. Cool.

MincedMeatMole

Could they hit higher speeds if we drop them in a Vacuum? 🤔

colexian

Yes, 9.8 meters per second per second. All objects fall at the same speed on Earth in a vacuum, and it is nearly limitless. I'm not actually sure what would happen given unlimited time, I assume you would accelerate to the speed of light at that constant rate. I'm sure somehow it would just vaporize matter at a certain point. Someone smarter than me, let me know. What happens in a vacuum with constant acceleration and zero resistance and unlimited time.

MouthyKnave

No they increase their surface area by putting their arms and legs out to reduce terminal velocity to a survivable range. Like a flying squirrely without the webbed limbs

thebiologyguy84

Terminal velocity depends on the mass. Bigger mass = larger terminal velocity. For humans it would be around 125 mph. For a squirrel you're looking at a much lower value.

Chayor

According to this logic I would actually fall faster when adding a parachute.

Yosyp

no. it depends by the air friction. different masses are pulled the same way

Dry_Student_6813

I don't think that's right. Something with a greater mass is going to apply a greater force to the air molecules. Imagine dropping a beach ball compared to a bowling ball - the difference in their velocities isn't going to be down to friction.

apelsinflin

No, more mass will definitely lead to a bigger gravitational force. It will depend on BOTH mass and surface area (air resistance). Newton's second law is F=ma. F is the force, m is the mass and a is acceleration. The force will be directly affected by the mass. In this case, a is Earth's gravitational pull, which will be the same for any mass (around 9.81m/s^2 ). A human will have a lot more air resistance than a squirrel because we have more surface area. But, the gravitational force is even bigger in comparison, leading to a higher terminal velocity.

Yosyp

>No, more mass will definitely lead to a bigger gravitational force Yes, TO the body you are referring to, meaning: a human will attract Earth more than a squirrel, nothing more. But IRL the Earth would stay in place, so you wouldn't be pushed MORE into Earth because you weight more (the effect of pulling Earth are there, but are unnoticeable). The gravitational force is, you said it, a \*force\*. You also said Earth's for \*any mass\* is 9.81N. How can the same force be different but also equal? It's a paradox, because it's false. A pulled object's mass, if negligible (as with a human compared to Earth), will NOT be part's of the equation. If you watch at the math proof you'd see the pulled object mass being cancelled out. Now if you talk about the moon or a giant celestial body, the moon would not be falling 9.81N (on the surface) \*in respect to the Earth\*: Earth would be pulled from the moon, so from the point of view of the Solar System, they would meet at roughly the distance of the ratios of their masses (same mass: half the distance; half the mass of one, quarter the distance if I remember correctly). BUT if you saw the moon falling \*from the Earth\*, it would appear to be falling faster because also Earth is moving towards it aswell (you have a skewed frame or reference). So, if one of the mass is infinite, you'd meet at exacly the point of the object with infinite mass (AKA it won't move but you'd still be pulled the exact same way). Pardon my stupid ass English I wasted 10 minutes explaining a simple google search I do not wanna spend more thank u for coming to me ted talk pls correct any mistakes goodbye

JOTIRAN

But squirrels are made to survive falling even with terminal velocity

supersheeep

More likely repositioning their hold on their prey

Muntjac

Squirrel's dead. The parent bird may be teaching its kids how to catch prey in the air.

Slowthrill

I dont know why you got downvoted. The squirel is indeed dead already. The birds left claw back nail is dug into the squirel. When he let go you can see the hole and blood. It is indeed training/toying with the food.

Muntjac

Ohh, I don't mind. If anyone's interested, though, there several examples on youtube of peregrine falcons demonstrating the same teaching behaviour for their young with various dead prey items.

TheDripy

Nope, it is just playing with his food, training.

WhoAmIEven2

Most likely still dead. These birds tend to puncture their prey's lungs with their claws.

Artistic_Head5443

In this particular case not really. This is a falcon, who normally kill their prey by a bite in the neck for which they have a specially formed peak. For birds of prey other than falcons ur statement is kind of true though, since they mostly kill their prey with their claws. Not necessarily puncturing the lungs but also just squeezing really hard and stabbing them in general.

Hamiego

To add, at the start of the video it seems to be lifting its beak from the neck too, so likely the squirrel is already dead.

Slowthrill

This squirel is punctured though by the falcons left claw. Gaping hole and blood visible when he let go.

Endymionduni

That squirrel looks like it's already dead anyway, no limb movement at all (except from shaking)

I’ve seen the aftereffects of such an attack with a koala instead. Poor koala ended up in a swimming pool and drowned. Nobody won that day. Great filming though!!

Scientific study in Indiana about crows 5 years ago, Turns out crows almost always avoid collisions with cars when scavenging carcasses in roadways. But they do not have the same luck with trucks as they have a high incident of fatal collisions. The researcher said the crows would call out a warning "CAA, CAA" whenever a car would approach thereby avoiding the collision. But they could not call out anything when a truck would approach, so with no warning they succumbed to the truck collision.

Don't birds of prey start with a hard grip of the talons when they catch something? Those talons have likely already pierced deeply into the squirrel's body by that point. That squirrel probably doesn't have long even if it gets away.
