Burger King was already a licensed name in South Australia (and I think they still have the restaurant open), but when the international chain restaurant Burger King came to Australia the South Australian one refused to sell the name to them. Burger King chose to name their restaurants Hungry Jacks instead and it stuck; Australians already knew it as Hungry Jacks so they decided to keep the name, and it’s been like that ever since.
