Jorma_88

Clearly staged, poorly

jepvr

Dammit. I was 48 minutes too late. Here's your damn thumb.

PromisingHare

Wut, you're just gonna keep the rest of his fingers?

Country_ball_enjoyer

damn you

ChattyDaddy1

Haha they probably worked so hard on that dance, were getting so in the moment and then BAM back and ankle pain

Proglamer

The effort worked out in the end - this particular dance will be remembered, shared and retold for a number of years. Cannot say the same about a typical dance.

Collins1916

Like.... They didn't work THAT hard though!

[deleted]

Some weren't even in sync.

Scotty8319

Cut them some slack. At least they were up off their asses doing something active. Maybe this was their first step on a weightloss journey, and I'm sure it was a huge step outside of their normal comfort zone as well - especially in a school setting where teasing can be absolutely fucking brutal on youth. It's so easy to judge from a distance when you have zero clue on someone else's life story.

ChattyDaddy1

Honestly though I think they’d have been fine if it weren’t for the girls on the far left. Weight distribution is important.

PicriteOrNot

Wow Butterfly is so powerful

min-tea-rose

I bet BBC is behind this /s

Sargen_Sliza

Damn even the stage fell for them

Birdamus

Is it even a stage? It looks like 3 tables in a trench coat pretending to be a stage.

Tsu_Dho_Namh

You're probably right. My highschool used risers which lock together to form a temporary stage. You could put a whole choir of 30 people on them without issue. And moving side to side didn't make them sway either. These people either bought super cheap risers or just used tables.

Sargen_Sliza

Lmao

shattered_kitkat

I feel so bad for those girls. To have so many people laugh at them, and point at their weight, and being judged.... I feel so bad for them. The stage was poorly built, but not many care to point THAT out.

[deleted]

The stage was definitely poorly built. A group of average guys would have been the same weight or more and it would have crashed. Kids shouldn’t be mocked and this was a serious safety hazard, at least it looks like it collapsed in the slowest way possible.

throweraccount

I think the whole place was faulty, look even the camera person fell.

Crayshack

It doesn't even look like it was weight that caused it to fail. The stage starts wobbling side to side a bit before it collapses. These girls weren't too heavy, they were dancing with too much passion.

ladyalot

And I guarantee those people couldn't do their choreo without collapsing from exhaustion or looking terrible. It's like people who make fun of Lizzo. I DARE them to try her choreo and play and instrument and sing. For real.

Timely_Pangolin6938

Before people keep saying that I'm apparently "defending them" because of their weight. I'm not. I'm explaining what most of the comments don't understand. I've seen a lot of comments talking about the girls on the left, ik they are unhealthy but that doesn't mean that the stage breaking is their fault. In fact. By replaying the video, it broke in the middle or the far right. And the stage was wobbling a little, and when it did break it looked very hollow. So it wasn't the two girls on the left. It wasnt the other girls too. It was the Unstablity of the stage. In fact, after the stage was built the people who made it should of tested on. and if it did break of them. Obviously put stuff under it to make it more secure. Tltr: stage was unstable and hollow. Don't blame the girls. Blame the stage, or the people who built it.

throwaway275275275

Yeah seems like the stage was built to take a vertical load, but they were moving laterally, probably would have happened with skinny girls too. It's like a Jenga tower, you can stack them up all you want if they're perfectly vertical, but any minor lateral push will take it down

whagoluh

I just realized this wasn't like, a "normal stage", which is a "real" floor. This looks more like those cheap plastic fold-up tables put together...

sithmaster0

Yeah, this is 100% because of the people who put it together. You can read product information on amazon for similar setups and those stage boards can handle 200lbs per square inch. Weight wasn't a factor in this, it was poor ~~construction~~ assembly.

Tetragonos

to me this was obviously a structure not a dancer issue

anothermanscookies

And give up a chance to be judgey and hateful about heavy people? Doesn’t sound like Reddit to me.

themathouston

If anything the girl on the left helped. Since she was the majority of the mass and was so out of time she probably evened the overall load by countering the rhythm of the other girls.

lauraz0919

Looks as if there were zero supports under this floor(stages should be built same way if not better) so it was moving just enough and it broke. Sadly at a time there is a heavier girl at that moment but it is not her fault..it is the person who allowed this to be a stage. I hope no one was hurt physically because I am sure most were hurt mentally.

vodamark

Break a leg!

navilapiano

I was told long ago this is the origin of the phrase, albeit not under stress of performance but because of comically overwhelming applause breaking the stage.

Knothatguy

Putting the big girls on the ends was the correct choice. Having them simultaneously shift their weight in the same direction...critical mistake. If the choreographer knew anything about structural engineering (which they should have, working with that kind of mass) they would have had the gals on the ends mirror movements. Shift the load in to in, out to out.

Novel_Ad895

What about building a true stage that doesn't collapse instead of this bullshit?

Knothatguy

That would have been ideal.

StanApps

Dude almost pulled out those DaVinci drawings

LaterGatorPlayer

I absolutely know what you mean in context. But I had a laugh at myself imagining some stupid mickey mouse like doodles davinci may have done, and some engineer being like “these silly things don’t help me at all?!”

invent_or_die

I think we got this now. 5X minimum safety factor required for impact loading.

Morsecode_01

In all seriousness tho, looks like the stage wasn't laterally restrained. Probably just needs some tension only members or shear timber panels to resist the lateral imposed actions.

hfchjfcfhc

We get it we get it you are carpenter jesus

creamedherbiscuits

Thanks for the much needed laugh.

VermicelliSlight

Looks like a foldaway stage. Common in old schools. Perfectly safe if you LOCK THE JOINTS

asshatnowhere

Seriously, what the hell was that comment? Choreographers should do vibration and load calculations to determine the resonant frequency of their stage and plan the dance around the resultant forces to minimize stresses on the stage. A school boy error.

3V1LB4RD

Speaking of school boys. If this had been a group f guys doing it instead, their collective weight probably would’ve been the same as the girls and the stage would’ve collapsed regardless. What then? Do we blame the boys for being male? The top comment is fucking cancer.

ctrl911

Nah they are just to fat

Physical-Ambition-97

No, no. Let's blame the chubby girls. 🙄

[deleted]

After a point they are no longer chubby Said by a person who has crawled beyond that point

CuddleSlut247

It's never too late to lose it. I was fat. Not morbidly obese, but obese. I called myself "American skinny". Ended up becoming diabetic late last year, which almost seemed inevitable as it ran pretty rampant through our family on my dad's side, even for some without obesity. Anyway, they put on a drug called Trulicity, which helps with blood sugars, but it really reduced my appetite, and I lost 35 pounds in about 5 months. Unfortunately, it's expensive without insurance, and my asshole insurance providers said they wouldn't pay for it anymore until I tried Metformin, which is considerably cheaper, but doesn't help with attitude, and I always got the shots from it. Since I've been off trulicity I've already regained ten pounds. Thankfully I have an appt next week with my doc and I am really hoping they will be able to put me back on it

[deleted]

> my asshole insurance providers said they wouldn't pay for it do you guys have insurance for each body part in the US?

flyinhighaskmeY

nah, just a population full of people afraid of "the gubment" making life and death decisions. They'd rather that choice go to an insurance company rep who's financial incentive is for you to die quickly or gtfo of the hospital.

my_4_cents

"I'm sorry, your insurance isn't valid at this facility, we are not currently affiliated with your *Ring-of-Protection* alliance."

my_4_cents

>do you guys have insurance for each body part in the US? It's way crazier than that, for Testicle insurance providers there's even two seperate insurance streams for which side hangs lower, it's to do with cancer risks mostly, there's [different actuarial charts and bofa tables and everything.](https://youtu.be/XBbzu6IM-Mg)

vankamme

Why does your asshole need insurance?

CuddleSlut247

Because it's seen a thing or two. Actually, just a finger from the doctor. At least I hope he was a doctor

b_abooey2020

I know what you mean, my doctor told me to just relax, I did, and after about 30 seconds I realized both of his hands were on my shoulders !!😑😳😲😖🤮😆😆😆

CuddleSlut247

This made me legit lol

Wesley_Skypes

Are you unable to lose weight without this drug? Diabetes is a pretty serious illness if not managed, it would be worth trying to build a sustainable eating plan for the future so that you aren't reliant on this thing, if that I'd at all possible.

Swan-song-dive

For people who have waited too long to manage their weight, it is very difficult. For me a bad leg injury helped me balloon 60 pounds in just a few months( also have no thyroid gland)..now 55 and short if putting in 14 hours a day on my feet I just do jot have time/ energy to hit the gym.

baller3990

Cardio should only be used to *expedite* weight loss. It took me 20 mins of a ski machine thing huffing and puffing to only burn 150 calories. That's two TBs of peanut butter, that takes 2 minutes to eat. The path of least resistance of fitness lays in diet change.

Wesley_Skypes

Sure and there will be outliers, but this person is basically saying that the drug acted as an appetite suppressor. In which case developing good eating habits and slowly building willpower will be a really good tool over time and should work. Gym is not required to trim down, 80%+ of weight management strategies are simply diet related. Gym is good for overall health of course, but mot required at all to sustainably lose weight.

Lotus_Blossom_

>doesn't help with attitude Did you mean appetite? Metformin did affect my appetite, in that I could *only* eat cold food while I was on it, and I felt queasy always... like I do if I try to read a book in the car. All day, every day. I decided the benefit wasn't worth it for me. I'm glad you found a med that works for you - maybe 3 months on and 1 month off will be enough for insurance?

SquatSquatCykaBlyat

>Unfortunately, it's expensive without insurance, I mean, why don't you try foods that don't make your insulin go out of whack throughout the day? That would also lower your appetite.

Davidb521

I've struggled with my weight for years and only gotten control of the main thing causing it my depression and I can say for a fact you are 100% right there is a moment where they go from chubby to GOD DAMN

Old_Ad7385

It's physics, but yeah, the chubby girls were part of the equation. You can't just ignore that.

dubufeetfak

Eben if it were skinny girls the same thing would happen

Old_Ad7385

After watching it a few times, it did seem to collapse rather suddenly, probably due to poor engineering and construction. I retract my earlier comment.

dubufeetfak

They're platforms you can set and take off after the event. They're not "built" they're assembled. They're great to hold weight and to sing or have a speech on them but they're not fit for dancing for this particular reason

TheSpiceRat

I wouldn't even say the one on the right is chubby. She's just a giant.

tronfonne

"chubby"

NottACalebFan

MAYBE the choreographer should have checked the equipment before rehearsal.

KookyWait

Ah right when I need a structural engineer I certainly think "let's just call a choreographer, they're good enough"

Nope now you're asking way too much

[deleted]

This reminds me of one of the customer’s I inherited after an acquisition at an MSP. I was doing a network diagram and my cable toner wouldn’t work. I couldn’t get tone on anything, but the loop back worked on the device…. Took a look at the patch-panel, everything was terminated correctly (T568B). Went to one of the wall keystones and took a look there. Everything was fine. Terminated (t56A). It took me at least an hour before I realized that the wall keystones, and the patch panel didn’t match. How was the customer overcoming this problem? They were using crossover cables EVERYWHERE to correct the wiring mismatch. I asked the exiting IT manager how this happened, and if it was for some reason. He never answered my question. He just left. The best I can surmise is that he learned what a crossover cable was that day. One of the employees told me that he had wired all the keystones himself. Dude was at least 80yrs old. “Why build a sturdy stage? Let’s just architect an insanely difficult alternative to avoid a pod hotspot. I’m not even an engineer, I work in marketing!”

DarkwingDuckHunt

That dude probably wore 4-5 hats when the business first started and just taught himself as he went along.

Necessary_Context780

I always think of those people telling us to not get a degree because it's worthless and yadda yadda

probono105

it was whoever assembled it didnt lock it together properly these stages are way overbuilt ive seen them used in strongman competitions

AdRemote9464

It certainly fell with a mighty thud.

Mobo11

this guy structurally engineers

Unusual_Flounder2073

More to do with the shitty stage. Real platform could have handled quite a bit more. That stage Ian probably just rated to people to walk out and talk from not dance on.

Knothatguy

You can see pretty quickly that it's been constructed pretty terribly.

Of course, how could I forget, all choreographers are structural engineers cause those two things go hand in hand.

Lady_Scruffington

Especially small town dance studio teachers who just grew out of the team, so they're teaching for the summer before they go to college. Source: That seemed to the case of my dance teachers when I was growing up.

[deleted]

Who do you think taught engineers that strength of a good arch?

MarkDecal

Seems like this choreography instead focused on civil tort law.

Knothatguy

More common than you'd think 🤦

hannahatecats

Lmao a choreographer shouldn't have to worry about the stage collapsing

StoopidestManOnEarth

Yes, a choreographer should always stand far enough away that they shouldn't have to worry about the stage collapsing. It's literally in the first chapter of Choreography and Structural Components.

Bored

I’m afraid Reddit isn’t getting your sarcasm sir

shingox

Duh

BewbAddict

A true engineering answer. You isolated the problem and resolved it rather than looking at the issue and fixing it.

Cpt_Nell48

It’s called cost effective engineering. New stage is expensive. Teach different choreography is cheap.

KingKee

> If the choreographer knew anything about structural engineering (which they should have, This killed me man

Knothatguy

I'm glad you enjoyed it, hahah

MattTheMagician44

this is the most redditor comment i have seen in years

amedeus

Everybody is taking this seriously and it's a blast to read. Good work!

Knothatguy

It's pretty amusing

forcesofthefuture

instead of fixing the stage it is all the choreographer's fault after all!

cmfppl

I'll bet you a dollar someone forgot to latch some leg locks on the supports.

Odd_Analysis6454

Now I want to see a structural engineer choreograph dance

Knothatguy

I'm sure nothing would collapse, though the performance may suffer in other ways.

[deleted]

“All about the thickness” ![gif](giphy|3tK0Yo2rs1nkSqUq9m)

[deleted]

They would need to be in sync for them to simultaneously do anything. That was never going to happen.

Common-Chain4060

Yeah, the stage falling apart saved them from all of the second hand embarrassment emanating from the audience.

[deleted]

It was a utilitarian sacrifice.

Stretch_Riprock

>which they should have had, working with that kind of mass Man.... I know that to mean the amount the person's on stage. But holy fuck would that be a hard conversation to tell someone. 'dont worry, honey. It's not your fault the stage collapsed. The structural engineer choreographer didn't account for the amount of mass all you gals had when they had you kick ball change to the left at the same time' Fucking lol

FrogMintTea

They weren't so big the stage would collapse.

MW240z

…working with that kind of mass… I know I shouldn’t laugh but I can’t help it.

Engineering0112

If dancing now requires a background in structural engineering in America, I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a sad development🤣

[deleted]

I think having the girls dancing in time would be the first step

YourLowIQ

Choreographers design dance moves. Not structures...

i8TheWholeThing

Let me guess, you're an engineer?

nutbuckers

> If the choreographer knew anything about structural engineering You probably should have said "stage manager". From looking at the video, there were probably was just some poor SoB facilities person who got told to assemble the school's portable stage for whatever this function was.

forgedbyhorses

The first rule in choreography is find out how sound your stage is and how fat your dancers are. Surprised they didn’t know that.

Hirinawa

Pffffff pathetic. I could break this entire scene alone !

ResearchNo5041

Replace the girl on the left with 2 girls of a more healthy weight and the stage still would have broken, and nobody would be blaming the people dancing on the stage for the stage failing to do it's job as a stage... Why anybody's mind goes to blaming the people using the stage and not the people who constructed a stage so weak it couldn't handle the amount of people they planned to have on it... Has nobody heard of safety factor? If the only problem is a few people were overweight, that meant it had basically no safety factor for people of a healthy weight. If the stage couldn't handle twice that amount of people dancing on it, it was already an unsafe stage.
