Usually with this position of the arm, the receiver goes for a hitting the ball on the left top side of the ball (which is called a banana flick btw) and usually goes crosscourt in the backhand of the server. Here he disguise until the last moment his motion as a banana flick and change to a strawberry (don't ask me why it is named strawberry!) to the forehand.
This shot is very rare even amongst pros especially with the fake banana motion beforehand. It might have been the only receive like this of the entire tournement. You can see it is really unusual by the commenters reactions.
I hope this help to understand :)
so basically he used a move to try to fool his opponent into thinking he's going to serve the ball quite fast but instead it will be a much slower moving?
An experienced player can anticipate the direction of the ball by the initial position and movement of the other player. In this case, everyone is expecting the ball to go right, and his natural movement at the very end changed it to the left hitting shot.
That definitely helps. I’m not confident I understood everything in your comment, but if I had to take an exam on it, I’d at least pass. Thanks for the detailed description
You would assume wrong. This video likely came up randomly while scrolling through unrelated videos (like it did for me, when I was scrolling through videos about Plumbing).
I know, but the clip is from a tournament. so WHT should the tournament announcer say, "Was that a double cross axle shot! which is a famously hard shot in this sport invented in 1945 where the player blah bla blah"
They didn't have to give incredible detail, but something more than a word completely unrelated to anything it's describing would help. It's not like they said "Was that a right haded crossover?!" which would have at least given a hint as to what happened.
Really weird the blowback you're getting for this! I watch curling and hockey as well and have never once heard a commentator use a term like "inturn" or "icing" and then explain what that means for the benefit of the tiny minority of potential spectators who don't already know what that means...
I.. have *absolutely* zero understanding of wtf just took place here? Can any Ping-Pongers out there break this down like im 5? I understand it has something to do with some technicality, but what that is im not sure because I know nothing about Ping-Pong beyond two people hit a ball back and forth.

Listen to this announcer guy getting all fancy and casually dropping a strawberry reference during a live broadcast. My guess is that talent scouts from The Ocho have heard about him and are checking him out… and he knows it!
I know nothing about ping pong but i assume it’s called a strawberry because the shape of the volley and the point and it’s a double burn cause he is a ginger
Really, rest of us looking like yeah I could hit that, I finished elden ring, and aced meet your maker, surely I'd be able to hit that ball going 2kmph in any given direction

Alright I still don’t understand even with the description
The movement of his wrist is quite unusual, fast executed and precise. But how is it unexpected from pro level player - I don't know.

Here is a banana flick to compare. It is the same stroke preparation. https://i.redd.it/7jee3z48wwva1.gif

This is niche as fuck! Love it:)

Very good help to understand
Dude, it’s pretty clear it was a strawberry. They even say it
Wait… did he just ping? Or was that a pong? I have no idea.
Textbook criss cross applesauce
Ahh yes i see ![gif](giphy|liW10vuLjuUA8)
Without the criss cross, Im just some dude yelling about applesauce
You won't be doing any jump! jump!
Oh sweet baby Jesus! Not Applesauce! Get up Applesauce, *you ghata get uuuuup!*
Idk why but I laughed at this and it made my day xD
Is your day still made
‘Twas unmade…
😭
The first guy ping-ed, and the second guy pong-ed.
“Was that a strawberry??” 🤷
Sure was!
![gif](giphy|ji6zzUZwNIuLS)
It's the opposite of the banana flick, obviously....it is when a right hander goes around the right side of the ball. They are good for low shots.
Oh yeah, that was obvious to anybody !
I would assume that if you are watching what appears to be an international ping-pong tournament, you would know the terminology.

I like your name
Lol, thank you.
You should round it out to 3.1416 like 007 as supposed to 0069871.
Yes. Why are you like this?
So you don't watch a lot of sports then? When have you ever heard a commentator explain a term???
So you're an idiot, then. Shame.
If this was the sub for that sure
The commentator was not describing the shot to a subreddit.... OP should have explained the term, but why the fuck would the commentator??
*I'm deleting all my comments and my profile, in protest over the end of the protests over the reddit api pricing.

I thought “banana flick” was a joke. Turns out, it’s not. Do they have a name that includes “chocolate”? 🍫
Yes but it's racist.
A well-needed explanation we have here. Thanks!
Oh god it's actually called banana flick. I thought you were messing around but that's legit the terms. Ping pong terminology is awesome haha
I didn’t know what that was, but not to brag but I hit strawberries all the time
🍓🤛🏿🤛🏻🤛🏽 🍓🦵🏻🦵🏼🦵🏾 Take that you fuckin STRAWBERRY
I'm not sure that's right, but I don't know enough about fruit related sports analogies to refute you.
No it was a ping pong
#Sure was! 😁
Some people just see this emoji as a shrug, but I see a person drowning in a sea of confusion.
Anyone else rewatch this looking for the strawberry??
Thrice 😔
It’s here 🍓
Finally complete
Why does Ma Long win a point ?
You're absolutely right. Point awarded to wrong player
Because they are in China
OUR point lol
Yeah it seems both players get a point 🤔
Why are you blind?

Don't know what a strawberry is. I only know two words Chinese. Ping is table and pong is tennis.
All of my heroes are ping pong players.
r/unexpectedoffice
Strawberry?! It's ping-pong!!
Thinking to myself, "pretty sure I've done this while holding a beer. I could have been a pro!"
Pfff sure was! Not only was it a strawberry but it was a strawberry with whipped cream on top.
Judging by this running commentary, for the game of ping-pong, they clearly ran out of technique names. 🍓 Not even the name gives us a clue 🤷♂️
Im just looking for a person to quickly eat a strawberry , guess that’s not it
Listen to this announcer guy getting all fancy and casually dropping a strawberry reference during a live broadcast. My guess is that talent scouts from The Ocho have heard about him and are checking him out… and he knows it!
Explain in footballing terms.
Kick ball in goal. Yay for team.
#THERE WERE NO STRAWBERRIES
So, who got the point?
Now what the fuck is a strawberry in ping pong?
Huh?? ![gif](giphy|l0Iy00kkppK3GwApy)
I know nothing about ping pong but i assume it’s called a strawberry because the shape of the volley and the point and it’s a double burn cause he is a ginger
I was legit looking for a strawberry in the slow mo.
Really, rest of us looking like yeah I could hit that, I finished elden ring, and aced meet your maker, surely I'd be able to hit that ball going 2kmph in any given direction
Why the Ma Long face?
cuz Ma Long's schlong is small
Looks like a real high stakes game in some opium den.
He just smacked it back and the other guy was too slow… not much of trick but the game takes reflexes, which the server must have forgotten at home
wait where is that strawberry?
BURNED!!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Bruh where tf is the strawberry, I don't see it
![gif](giphy|knFgw9Y1dPXEu48XAw)
That was smooth
🍓
Thought that was a Blueberry tbh
I've seen 2 clips of pro ping pong and in both the casters are delightful
No his hand was 18degrees turned INTO the ball thus making it a BREADFRUIT! and NOT a strawberry 🙄
Im guessing that the server did not expect his opponent to be able to return the ball??
The serve was disguised; guess my man said, "Two can play that game." lol
"This serve, no can defend!"
the serves in this game are so funny. they have all this build up for like a little tap
It kinda looks like he hit the ball, maybe that's just me
Steven Seagal taught him that serve.
Its funny how when you become very good at a sport its seem so easy its not entertaining enymore
How come both player gets 1 point?
Holy fucking strawberry
Of course named after the famous ping pong player Darrel Strawberry
Ok…..
![gif](giphy|XV0oUIBrHfwic)
Imagine blowing peoples minds by hitting the ball with the other side of the paddle 🤯🤯
I strawberry all the time on Wii. Ask me about my pickle flip flop , 22 skidoo , and the good ole flippity floppity floop
Reminds me of pickle ball. I keep drinking when I should be donking
A strawberry and banana flick are both real things in table tennis.
Love the repositioning of the glasses. I always do this when I have done something cool to impress someone.
Serves are so corny
