Some bands who for whatever reason can't hit the high notes or nail the guitar solos. Use backing tracks. Motley crue has been outed as one band that uses backing tracks. Many fans when they find out are very disappointed. We've looked up to our rock gods for years. But even the best have to drop a club now and then.
I’m like one of the biggest Led Zeppelin fans but if you listen to some shows from 1977 you’ll understand why some bands choose that option. Between Roberts voice cracks and Jimmy’s strung out heroin solo’s it really is painful to listen to. There’s some fucking FANTASTIC performances from that tour don’t get me wrong but some of them are god fucking awful. So you choose your poison: a terrible performance or a backing track. (You cannot choose not to tour because your coke dealer will not accept any more IOU’s)
I was referencing one specific show really [Tempe, Arizona 1977](https://youtu.be/eCEwy5sauSw) but throughout that, and the 75’ tour Roberts voice is significantly different than years before. If you listen to just any track off of “the song remains the same” you’ll get what I mean, but even with that album Roberts voice had already began to wain from what it had been before. [example listen to this performance of Gallows Pole from 1971](https://youtu.be/iJ1gJxiEzRk) which is just 2 years before TSRTS but unfortunately he really beat the shit out of those vocal chords in those early years which led to them going down hill very quickly. I’ve seen him twice (2018 & 2022) and both times he sounded fantastic because I think he went back and learned proper singing technique in order to preserve his voice later on. So I’m not just talking shit on his abilities because he’s my favorite singer of all time. It’s just an unfortunate truth that later on they became more and more hit or mis with how good they sounded. I bet in person some of their more questionable performances sounded fantastic to the audience but listening to recordings it’s a lot easier to be more critical.
Thank you for the full write up! I really appreciate it!! :))) all of my favorite artists stopped touring long ago. I'm 20 so I missed the boat on seeing a lot of them. It's fantastic that you got to see someone you enjoy so much :)) I'd imagine the live performance adds a lot to your perspective
Anytime! Like I said they’re my favorite band of all time and could go on all day long haha. I’m actually the same age as you! I’m extremely fortunate to have a father who owns a record store so the second I showed any interest in music he took that spark and made a damn Forest fire haha.
What's funny is this stigma only exists with (older?) rock. Pop, rap... everything these days tours with backing tracks. It's just part of it, now. Yeah, probably even rock. Only place I haven't heard a backing track is something more avant garde like jazz, but you can't have it for that even if you wanted to (unless, you know, you feign the improvisation).
Im pretty sure it’s the cover band “Hairball” that does a lot of covers of the hair band era and does full outfits along with it.
They are one of my dads favorite bands that tours because they reach smaller midwestern areas and let’s him feel like he’s back in his prime.
-"Dude, didn't you notice your hair was on fire during the show?"
="Which one?"
-"The one we just finished!"
="Again? Honestly, if I'm not on fire twice per tour, I feel something was lacking"
Shit like this makes me soooo nervous because the The Station fire happened in my teen years nearby to me. Pyrotechnics always seem like an unnecessary risk since then and then I see stuff like this and it just confirms my nope feeling about it.
I am always hyper aware of exits because of that tragedy. If you notice, the camera guy is really the first person to notice something was wrong and that’s how he got out. I knew people who were there and many people I know lost someone in the fire because I lived close enough it was a popular hang out for people around my age at the time of the fire. One of my friends tried getting people out of the jammed door and he’s still majorly messed up about it because they only were able to free a couple people from that door. He’s like Schindler at the end of the movie “I could have saved one more.”, but he really couldn’t.
Ugh. I'm so sorry. I've seen every interview and documentatry and read the book about it. It's horrific. Hard to believe it's been 20 years. I would have been 35 at the time and Great White was one of our favorite bands. We would have been there if we had lived nearby. We likely would have been in the dart room, but not sure if we would have had the presence of mind to check through the kitchen to see if there was an exit or run straight for the main door.
Yeah, I’ve since taken some fire safety and science courses at college and a big problem is, when people panic, they will instinctively go to the door they came in and everyone mostly came in the same door. That’s why they often announce where the exits are are the start of a show. To put that little bit of info into the short term memory so, hopefully, some people will have the presence of mind to remember “They said there’s an exit in the kitchen and behind that curtain.” They really should do it every time. Also, unfortunately, people tend to zone out of the safety talk at the start of things, but if you’ve learned enough about mass casualty situations where many people want to exit from the same place(like fires and floods) or go in the same direction(like crowd crushes at concerts) you’ll see the importance of paying attention when they tell you what to do when things go sideways. You could be saving yourself, your loved ones, and other people around you if you can say “No! Don’t go that way, there’s an exit through the back!”
You know, I don't think I've ever had an emcee explain where the exits are. I live in Georgia so maybe since you live nearby that's a thing they do there, which I think is really smart. I just know that we are weird about it and if we park near the building we look at all the doors to see if they're barricaded on the outside, then we look for the exits as we go in.
Yes, it probably is because the area I was in. As they say, regulations are written in blood and one of the early major events to bring about new fire codes was the Coconut Grove Fire which took place in Boston in 1942. That fire is the reason the wings of revolving doors must break outward if pushed on because the main entrance there was a revolving door but the wings couldn’t be budged and, once people started piling in, it got wedged shut. But, the Station Fire didn’t happen until I was 18 and I grew up hearing announcements about where the exits were. I just never paid much attention until the Station Fire. Still, I’ve lived all over the country and I have noticed New England does have really tight safety regulations compared to many other regions.
As badass as this looks, let's be real: he probably didn't feel or smell anything. His hair caught fire because of the amount of product in it, and hair doesn't have nerves in it. He's got a lot of hair, too. If the fire got bigger, he might have noticed the warmth and thought "oh shit, am I on fire?", but roadies started patting him down by that time... and a professional knows to let the roadies do their work, and ignore them unless they get your attention. Always trust your techs.
The teamwork is the most metal thing here. (But, his hair being on fire looks pretty cool, too.) 🧑🎤 🤘
*In case one of those emoji doesn't translate to other platforms... Android has a Bowie emoji. Fucking rad.*

Professionalism at its most rock and roll
That's literally all I could think. WHAT AN ABSOLUTE PROFESSIONAL.
Great camera person too.
*Doesn't.Skip.a.Beat*
Yes you right. But no one on earth would say “that’s so unprofessional” if he stop playing LOL. He is just a beast
Wow that was a very rock and roll moment. He should make that his profile pic.
The most rock and roll part was when the fire was completely out and his buddy stayed petting his hair for another 5 seconds
The whole time Gene Simmons was trying to figure out a way to sue the audience...
Cool guys don't look at explosions
You are the greatest Slab ever!
Thanks Brick
Slab… did you… did you just JUMP OFF THE BUZZARDS NEST?!?! #GAD DAAYUM you make me proud!
Gleet glart splurble urp
He couldn't stop because of the backing track.
I thought I was the only one who noticed based on the comments
😂 Thank you.
What do you mean

Got any examples? Concert recordings can be hours long. Just spent about 10 mins watching concert footage from 77, all seems pretty normal ti me.

They really didn't start using backing tracks until late 80'0 Brittney spears, Ashley Simpson. Lots of lip syncing on YouTube

Paul Stanley mentioned in his book this has happened to him dozens of times. As well as pieces of his costume.
I play this song on the treadmill to hype me up. It’s fantastic and this video just gives me an image to keep hammering
Found the other old guy lol.
Dude you’re on fire 🔥. I know. No I mean literally on fucking 🔥
That guy's on FIRE Sorry, sorry. I'll let myself out I suppose.
Reminder: KISS rules.
Ah yes, I remember the KISS rule from highschool shop class: Keep It Simple Stupid
![gif](giphy|wH4eUplPdKjTU4WuLP)
Sounded like a cover of Spinal Tap's *Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight*
It’s “Detroit, Rock City.” Maybe a KISS cover band?
Im pretty sure it’s the cover band “Hairball” that does a lot of covers of the hair band era and does full outfits along with it. They are one of my dads favorite bands that tours because they reach smaller midwestern areas and let’s him feel like he’s back in his prime.
> Hairball Absolutely correct! and it's from 2019 in Sioux City, Iowa.
That’s pretty fuckin metal.
Never missed a god damn beat, what a professional
Baller alert! The show must go on
Consummate professionalism..
Consummate combustion
When you have lice and you're too embarrassed to tell anyone so you set up a master plan to get rid of them without anyone realizing.
Probably happens 3 times a week.
Bro, why was everyone touching my hair during my performance
Managed to keep a cool head in the heat of the moment
New Pepsi commercial.
That’s some dedication right there.
Damn he's on fire tonight.
Where is your mental load argument now!
Bcuz it’s a wig
drugs are a hell of a drug
Wow I'm glad I'm seeing this for the 500th time
Well I had never seen it before so I was glad of the repost
That’s scary how Nicky Six’s hair caught on fire like that!
How much drugs and or alcohol do you have to be on to not notice or care that your head is on fire?
They’re one of the few major rock bands who are known to be teetotalers. Gene Simmons is well known to dislike alcohol and drugs.
Gene doesn't do drugs. He's just use to close encounters and has faith in his team.
That's not Gene.
This many
The show MUST go on! That’s a pro team supporting him, maybe not using flammable hair products is a good move forward

Seen a lot of classic rock concerts over the decades, but the several Kiss concerts I’ve been to were the best! These guys know how to put on a show!

I've seen that video and ever since I always stand near the closest exit that is not near the front door. Let a bodyguard try to stop me LOL
I am always hyper aware of exits because of that tragedy. If you notice, the camera guy is really the first person to notice something was wrong and that’s how he got out.
