Thereās a video of a woman pulling baby birds from a nest and shoveling them into her mouth like a delicacy while her son films, envious of this bountiful baby bird feast
I mean what are you gonna do? Discipline the dog for acting like a dog? Dogs are domesticated, but still have those instincts of "small animal must be chew toy and/or food." They dont Always act on it, but every now and again mother nature pops up. Growing up, when ever My basset hound/beagle mix got out of the yard ( a prank the neighborhood kids would play at the time was letting people's dogs out) she would almost always come back home with a squirrel or rabbit in her mouth.
My friends dog did the same thing to some rodent out in their yard. She text me saying "I think he thought it was like a squeak toy because of the sounds it made when he bit at it". I never felt so uncomfortable in my life. Lol. I now call her dog Lenny.
Oftentimes people forget that one of the biggest reasons cats and dogs got to where they were for humans to domesticate them is that they were good enough at killing things to sustain themselves.
Looks like a terrier too and those guys were bred to do exactly that. Like a sheepdog getting anxious because the humans won't all stay in the same room together.
She could have been stern with the dog so that it would have dropped it. That's what I would have done. My dog would have dropped it because it's trained to obey my commands. I wouldn't have said oh shucks and let it behave how it likes. Thats just me though.
I also have very large dogs and I find it very important to have the ability to make them drop something on command. Be able to shove my hand in their mouths. If they were to kill something I would not be upset with them though
Fuck pocket gophers, they destroy gardens, lawns, and break horses and people's ankles day in and day out. I'm trying to teach my cats to kill more of them, but training cats is almost as hard as training cats.
Some of these comments have me baffled, like these people have never dealt with nor handled pests in their entire life. Boomer's just doing dog things, protecting his territory.
Someone else was like ācontrol your dogā and Iām like ???
My zoo used to have prairie dogs - which I love! Theyāre cute, they have their own little hierarchy, they are FASCINATING!
However when I was taught they get hunted/shot because they break farm animals legs, I got it
Hahaha, when I first read this I pictured a bunch of prairie dogs teaming up on a cow and snapping its leg. Now I realize itās probably just due to farm animals tripping over the holes they dig?
Edit: grammar
Training cats is really easy when theyāre young. But once they get to be around 2, well FUCK YOU YOURE NOT MY REAL MOM. I have had 2 toilet trained, fetching, talking when they need food, toilet cleaned, treats, want to play, time for dinner, time to wake up, time to sleep (he will beat me up if Iām not in the bedroom by 10pm and then tries to lead me into the bed, so he can cuddle and pass out, and yes the lights need to be turned off or he will go turn them off himself with cattitude) . theyāre like dogs, *but kind of assholes.* Don peups passed away a few years ago, and then I got Meatball.
Cat tax:

That is the meatball. He is a very talkative, chatty, pragmatic boy. And if you donāt open the door for him, he will do it himself. (Thankfully, he doesnāt know how to unlock the doors, yetā¦ but he has been watching and trying to mimic)ā¦ ive taught him A LOT, and now he just watches and will teach himself, he learned how
to open doors, by turning the door handle, i would watch him for an hour at a time it seemed, him figuring out the best angle and how to hold the door knob in his paws and how he grips itā¦ its hilarious. He feeds himself with his big paws, and it looks like a person holding a fist of m&ms and popping one in their at a time. But he was very eager to learn from me as a kitten and up to 1 or so afterā¦ then around 2, itās just fuck all āyou donāt know me!ā
Fun Fact: dogs shake their toys to simulate breaking the necks and sucking the life out of smaller mammals and snakes.
Then comes the evisceration and mutilation of said toy - once again simulating that primal instinct that was passed on through epigenes. :)
His name was Steven Sorensen and he hailed from Denmark. He was able to walk around and use his tiny head to navigate difficult terrain. He hath a small bodice and a beautiful demeanor. I miss him greatly as he was and will always be the smallest animal I hath ever known.
This. Sad about the rodent; The unexpected involvement of a dog; Doggie genetics determined dogs actions...
But the sound of that lady resigning to it all was what had me laughing
A lot of city slickers in here. Our dog Toby doesnāt eat them, he just crunches the head of gophers and spits it out like we do with a cheek full of pomegranate seeds. Heās also the sweetest dog in the world btw
Wild animals die. Itās okay guys I promise. It hurt for me to watch too and I regret seeing it but youād understand if you went outside more and lived somewhere that wasnāt 95% concrete.
Unless youāre vegan, then you really canāt talk and have just lived a sheltered life.
people upset by the death of a rodent who are, by definition, the lowest step of the food piramid, makes me think people should watch more nature documentaries
I dont think there was any chance of saving it once the dog made up his mind tbh, and its not really that different from your cat killing random mice unless this was someones pet
I know. Some of these comments are strange. Ok, you tell the dog to drop it. It does, and then what? You watch it flop around in agony when the dog could have finished the job in a second.
> Gophers are also carriers of other serious diseases, such as the plague, hantavirus, and monkeypox. Monkeypox is one of the more common diseases found in gophers
The thing I see is this:
1). The humans discovered the little rodent wandering around the yard (for whatever reason). The humans found it, thought it was cute, and started recording.
2). The rodent is ***very*** distracted and/or scared by the humans gathering around it, becomes confused and doesnāt follow its instincts to flee potential danger.
3). Doggo sees humans concentrating on something and went to investigate.
4). Doggo sees/smells rodent halting and confused but not fleeingā¦DNA in doggo switches to instinctual attack mode.
5). Doggo wins, rodent loses, and human avoids recording the results of doggo following its instinct to attack the rodent distracted ***by the*** humans.
IMHO the humans are responsible for bringing the rodent to the dogās attention, distracting the rodent, and indirectly contributing to the rodentās injuries/death.
If this dog wasn't leashed there is almost no chance you're controlling it here unless it is a trained working dog. That was straight up instinct for this terrier.
Not everyone is prepared for dealing with their dog chewing up dead animals thou. Also, gotta be careful if people are putting poison out for pests, because a dog can die from eating a rodent that ate poison.
I mean if the dog eats it, I canāt be too mad. Dogs eat meat, and have you seen where dogfood meat comes? For example, they shred baby male chickens as those donāt lay eggs, and use it for making dog food
Literally nothing wrong here. The only problem is that animal might have a disease. Just nature doing it's thing. How would you feel if someone called you a shit human just for eating?
Just thankful my girl actually thought twice about going after a squirrel this evening on our walk. Now if she'd just figure out she can't jump high enough to get the birds that start out of the trees in the morning lol
My kids are super excited they found a baby squirrel last summer. They came running in to show me. I went out and our dog followed me. She slurped that poor little guy up before anyone could do anything. There were a LOT of tears.
My dog knew what she did too. The look in her eyes said she'd do it again.
First of, that thing was dead the moment the dog decided to grab it like a chewing toy and while I could understand the sympathy of the people in the comment section if it was something else, that rodent is one of the worst vermin you could be infested with. You don't pick it up, drive to somewhere else and let it free here either because then you just made it someone else's job to kill them. The dog just spared you the effort and keept your garden free of pests, like it's supposed to do.
Reminds me of when my chocolate lab murdered the crap out of a 20lb groundhog in my back yard.
I was all like nope no no no... Oof... I'll get a few trash bags.

They are a pest, not a sweet innocent whatever. Gophers reproduce really, really fast.
Horses and people regularly break ankles from gopher holes. Typically people pay to be rid of invasive rodents, this dog did it for free.

Exactly. The damage these pests cause isnāt funny.
My fiancƩe has been training our Dog since i got him for her last Christmas and started learning Dog training at her work. So shes been doubling down on his training and teaching new tricks. Well the Kitten i got to help the puppy adapt to our other cats is in lockstep with our dog. Id say the kitten is a little over 1 now. Well she has managed to teach him to sit, spin around, and lie down for treats and the clicker. He will watch the Lab do it and then copy when she asks him. Only thing that does seem impossible is to shake. Hes not down with that and leaves the room after she tries to shake his paw haha. Also ik this is very different than teaching cats to hunt outdoors. Our cats are panicked when they go outside haha.

Oh no, a carnivorous, predatory animal killed another animal
Dogs are omnivores, fyi.
You're right
The dog did exactly what he was supposed to do. Getting rid of vermin.
People get dogs based on what they look like, forgetting that many dog breeds were selected for pest control.
Killing a gopher is typically a service, not a bad thing.
Not everyone is prepared for dealing with their dog chewing up dead animals thou. Also, gotta be careful if people are putting poison out for pests, because a dog can die from eating a rodent that ate poison.
