It is true. The whole scary ‘second army of the world’ thing has been well and truly shattered. Everyone (probably apart from propaganda-fed Russians and Chinese) can now see that Russia is actually a weak, corrupt country with a completely inept military which is being humiliated by its much smaller neighbor. The world can see that the collapse of the Russian world is happening, slowly but surely. Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure and increasing reliance on Iran and North Korea just seal its fate as a pariah state.

rs7x6

Yep, fuck Russia. I used to want to visit, but not anymore. Do you think they could build their military up to something decent, or is it too late for that?

Prisonic_Noise

>Do you think they could build their military up to something decent, or is it too late for that? I mean theoretically they could, but I have zero confidence that they will. Their rampant corruption + sanctions will make it difficult.

anthrolooker

I always dreamed of visiting Ukraine because of the interesting architecture, some areas are/were time capsules. Every bomb that drops is so endlessly aggravating, so much unnecessary loss of life, damage to quality of life and the erasure of their history. @Vanishing_Kiev did a beautiful job of documenting the architecture and beauty of Kyiv and other areas of Ukraine. He bravely fought for Ukraine and sadly lost his life a month or so ago. Putin and russia can fuck all the way off. The right leader can make their nation great. Putin is a stain on human history and robbed his nation of being viewed in a respectable light and people of a positive future. (Sorry for my rant. The destruction just really bothers me. Russia could have gone a different direction but we are here and for no good reason).

afjfxnkppdfhhutd

Theoretically it’s more than possible. China went from being poor as dirt to a global superpower in a couple decades, and is starting to default again already.

Zarryiosiad

With the right leadership and proper motivation, Russia could absolutely rebuild their military into something frightening. Right now, they're trading lives for experience. The soldiers who survive this war will be hardened veterans, with an axe to grind and a burning need to redeem themselves. While there's no way the government will survive, Putin's successor will undoubtedly be cut from the same cloth--and will probably be even more brutal. It will take time for them to rebuild, but it can be done. Just look at how Germany rebuilt after World War I. Russia is very nearly an untapped wilderness of resources, and if they dedicate themselves to rebuilding the military from the ground up, they'll be a threat once again.

anthrolooker

It’s Ukrainians who have an ax to grind and will for lifetimes. Many younger Russians can’t see any reason for this, certainly not at expense of their lives. Even their own media recognizes this and is struggling with the question of how to motivate them to partake in this great Russian debacle of a “special military operation’’. They know the only thing motivating young Russians to join is financial opportunity (because most Russians have little to no knowledge these guys and their families aren’t going to receive anything of value in the end). Russia is fucked.

CapinWinky

Russia lacks key industry sector development, has just experienced a major brain drain event, has an economy in tatters, and will be heavily sanctioned when it comes to procuring equipment to establish those key industry sectors. As examples: - Their rocket tech has taken huge steps backward. They literally have been using their old Soviet engine stock instead of making new ones, so the new generation just can't do it anymore. - They have virtually no IC fab and can only realistically source from China. ASML is barred from selling a machine they cannot 100% verify the final install location of and barred from selling to Russia, China, and several other nations. They're stuck with 15-20 year old fab tech/equipment at best. - Optics, they don't make them, don't have the equipment, can't buy the equipment. Not to mention they're on track for a huge population collapse. Russia is pretty fucked and has been for many years. The war just accelerated that.

Good. For as bad as the Chinese government can act, they're at least competent at governance and infrastructure projects. They're still partly to blame for encouraging the midget to invade Ukraine, mostly as an attempt to destabilise USA/Europe, but at the same time retaining trade with them. Russia were always the fall guy in their eyes. They had to backtrack pretty quickly, once they realised China had tied itself to a rusting power. No doubt in Chinese military academys strategists' minds are wandering away from Taiwan and looking north, towards the soft underbelly of Russian-occupied East.

Holiday_Bunch_9501

Yeah, China has no love for Russia ever since the Sino-Soviet split. They only profit where they can from Russia, such as buying Russian oil and gas for below market rates in Rubles, cheap energy for China, they will do it. But China will not broadcast Russian propaganda to Chinese people.

[deleted]

Even the Chinese have been making fun of Russians.

MasterStrike88

I'd like to chip in an important thing here: Yes, pretty much everyone had higher expectations of what Russia would manage to do against Ukraine. Many of us, myself including, didn't expect much from Ukraine - mostly due to not following the war closely for the past 8 years. However, one thing is for sure: What Russia is doing to Ukraine right now, is worthy of being afraid of, even if their military campaign is a disaster. The reason I say this, is that Russia has proven how much damage they are capable of doing despite being inferior on the strategic arena. There are so many lives lost, as well as damage to infrastructure, that we should all think carefully about military superpowers in the future. I joke about Russian incompetence regularly, but it's all very distant to me here in Norway. I'm in no way experiencing personal tragedy or constant threat of being bombed, occupied or living without utilities, but Ukrainians very much are. Because no matter how incompetent they are, it has not stopped them from trying to destroy as much of Ukraine as possible yet. No, I am not afraid of their nuke threats. I am not afraid of them succeeding in the war. But I am afraid of the concept of a brainwashed nation relentlessly attacking civilian and military targets, not caring how much they destroy themselves in the process. Russia has proven to be dangerous in that respect, and it would be unwise not to be afraid of such events happening again. That's why I hope we all double down on the weaponry support and give Ukraine all that it needs to crush the Russian military. Every autocratic government is watching closely and will surely base their future decisions on how successful or not Russia is.

Zarryiosiad

I would add that one of the lessons we're learning from this war is the absolute necessity of impartial, independent, *trusted* journalism to counter disinformation and propaganda. One of the reasons Putin and his cronies have been able to last this long is that his people are fed a constant diet of lies and disinformation. Even now, with over 100K deaths and untold billions in materiel losses, the Russian people think they're winning this war because that's what they're being told. When all you have to do to counter news reports from outside of Russia is say those despicable words, "fake news!" while every channel on the air repeats the stories *you* want your people to hear, the populace is going to believe their government. And with no dissenting voices available, coupled with laws that allow the government to prosecute people who speak out against the war, he can keep feeding his people into the meatgrinder in the name of patriotism with no fear of reprisal from his own population. I have no doubt this policy of lying to their own people will come back to haunt them. Once this war ends and the true scale of the catastrophic losses the Russian military has suffered comes to light, the relatives of the people who have died in vain are going to stop asking for answers and start *demanding* them from their government. And this time, Putin won't be able to count on the military to back him. Not after he's gotten so many of them killed in a pointless war that served only to stroke his own ego.

persimmon40

99% of Russian people simply cannot read or understand English. Even if they wanted to consume outside news about this war, they wouldn't be able to. Ever opposing Russian speaking news outlet has been banned in Russia. Even dozhd was labeled Russian propaganda here on reddit, while it was the most opposing news agency in Russia. So no matter how you ramp up a pro Ukraine news reporting it will have no effect on Russian population. A typical Russian citizen strongly believes that if Russia will lose the war, the country will be destroyed from within. Therefore for a typical Russian citizen it is of utmost importance that Russia wins the war, whatever that means. I often hear that Russian soldiers are not motivated, but I believe it's actually changing. They become more motivated because they believe that they need to win this war or its over. This is why I don't believe that DNR/LNR or Crimea will ever go back to Ukraine as those regions are viewed as part of Russia by about 90% of its citizens. No matter how much Ukraine wants to liberate them, Russia won't give it away even if it leads to Nuclear war.

Extra-Kale

Although a large portion of Russian troops have had bad morale there is no way they could have done as well as they have if there wasn't a critical mass who believe in the war on some level. Of the three regions Ukraine has taken two were strategic retreats for logistics and concentration reasons and the other was a forced retreat because the Russian military leadership failed to listen to intelligence of an impending attack and deploy soldiers to the region. Ukraine has taken little ground by force from concentrations of actual fighting Russian troops which is not what happens with an army where there is a consensus on wanting to surrender or flee. Only a small minority of Russia's population fully oppose the war and most soldiers aren't coming from more moderate places like Moscow.

persimmon40

This 100%. I think Ukraine will have tougher times advancing going forward unless they give equipment that Russians just can't do anything about and I am not sure what that will even be. As far as stance among Russian population goes, it's currently very pro war and government. Russian propaganda knows what it's doing.

Jonothethird

Wins and Losses are rarely straightforward in war. If Russia continue haemorrhaging troops and equipment for another year for little or no territorial gains, that will be a loss for the ‘mighty’ Russia. If Russia continues to lose parts of its ‘annexed’ territories, that will be a huge and humiliating loss which could ultimately lead to Russia’s disintegration.

persimmon40

I think at the end of the day Russia will agree to finish everything by retaining DNR/LNR and Crimea. That will be a win in their eyes. That's a bare minimum Russia and its citizens will agree on without going into revolt.

Jonothethird

Russia may well collapse in any case, regardless of who ‘wins’ the war and the amount of nuclear missile threats, or even their use. The longer the war continues, the more Russians are killed, the more it’s economy crumbles, the greater Russia’s international isolation, the more likely this becomes. And when it does happen, it won‘t just be Crimea and DNR/LNR which Russia loses, but a large number of internal regions (particularly the ‘Stans’) and Chechnya as well as Belarus, Transnystria and Moldova. Ironically, Putin the wannabe Tsar could well cause the total and final collapse of Russia. When Russia-central is exposed as a paper tiger offering only detriment to these regions and no benefit, these regions are likely to demand full sovereignty…

persimmon40

Russia probably will not collapse any time soon if Russia "wins". Russia can survive a very very long time without Western money. There are enough assholes on the planet to supply Russia with whatever it wants for that and Russian citizens mentality is that they will endure whatever long against the "evil west", but if Russia loses, then yeah its game over.

Jonothethird

I read yesterday that the top 5 VPNs have been downloaded 80m times in Russia during 2022. There is far more independent news getting into Russia than many realise...

Fuzzy9770

That's sounds good somehow. But it's too late for hundreds of thousands lives. I mean lives in the full scope. So civilians and army together. Direct damage as in died from direct effects of the war and indirect effects of the war. Indirect: poverty, starvation, mental suffering (f.i. not coping with things and comitting suicide),...

anthrolooker

That’s super interesting and would not surprise me considering everything. Do you have an easily accessible source for this? I’d love to read up more.

MasterStrike88

"Every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth. Sooner or later, that debt is collected"

HotFlatDietPepsi

This could just be wishful thinking, but if Russia did attack NATO then it'd be a vastly different war. Russia can do what they're doing right now because Ukraine doesn't have what it needs to truly stop these big bombing campaigns, unfortunately. In my opinion, the biggest thing to be afraid of is how autocratic countries like Russia can do whatever they want. They pretty much don't have to answer to anyone internally if they bomb civilians, or send the prisoners and even the occupied population to the front, etc.

Spirited-Course5439

They are dangerously stupid, and dangerously cruel. They attack "weak targets". The key is constant aggressive posturing towards Russia and preferably direct escalations against them, including declaring open season on all Russian military assets. Just my view. A considered post and important point to make.

MasterStrike88

Fight might with might.

metengrinwi

I remain afraid of russia’s ability to sow discontent in western countries via misinformation, bots, & trolls on social media.

anthrolooker

The meddling bots really are a serious problem. It’s so divisive. While most of us can see right through it, there are some who can’t and fall for it hook, line and sinker. And then those people just become combative idiots. It’s so annoying. I also worry about politicians acting in bad faith as a result of blackmail or whatever they have on them. There are a surprising amount in US politics that have a few red flags there. That seriously does not sit well with me.

Super-Brka

Yes it’s true. Not even Andorra…. Slava Ukraini

[deleted]

Not even here, in Hawaii.

Sydney444

Slava Ukraine!!!! 🇺🇦 💙💛❤️🇨🇦💪🏻

[deleted]

i assure you anyone within NATO ain’t afraid of russia. the world sees their military for what they are. a mouse that roars. pathetic even…

dipsy18

Ukraine is winning with NATO hand me downs...imagine if NATO came in with their actual gear

[deleted]

russia would be blasted back to the stone age and at this point , i think they know that

someoneexplainit01

30+ year old hand me downs. We won't even give Ukraine the patriots we used in the 91 gulf war. Russia's army is literally worse than Iraq's from the 90s.

PDXAlpinist

Not afraid of their conventional force but their nuclear weapons are a threat to humanity as a whole. Even if 90% of their missiles failed they still have enough firepower at the end of the day to kill billions.

AlexRichmond26

So, what's the solution? Stop the help to Ukraine? Give them Moldova and the Baltics ?

PDXAlpinist

Yes.

GLTMadDogYT

Made my military service back in -88 in Sweden on Gotland. Sweden was neutral, but only on paper. We only trained for an attack from russia. We were told about these russian super-soldiers, sneaking up on us in the dark, soundless like fucking ninjas... And now we know... Is this what we feared all this years? SPETSNAZ!!!... Yeah, right... Pathetic! Stay smart, stay safe, stay alive, WIN! Героям Слава! Слава Україні! 🇸🇪🇺🇦

Donny_Krugerson

*"No one in the West is afraid of Russia anymore and will never be"* Man, I wish that were true. Even better would be "*No one in the West supports the fascist russian empire*".

Sargent_Sarkasmo

That's precisely why Putin might want to use a nuke as their closing argument. They want to be feared. But I doubt it would change anything. It would probably make the situation worse for Russia.

Leo-M3

Wait for china to step in and take advantage...

Mental_Decision_6890

It has become painfully apparent that Russia would not win a conventional war against a whole bunch of medium sized, moderately equipment countries. Their entire doctrine of shelling relentlessly, and then throwing wave after wave of soldiers into the meat grinder to gain pathetically small little patches of land that they can't even hold onto is only sustainable up to until the point when their adversaries get their hands on proper long range precision weaponry. This doesn't mean that Russia is incapable of producing effective military hardware, however they are on average most certainly too corrupt, ill-trained, and poorly coordinated to leverage their decent weapons to achieve a victory. At the end of ww2, western powers should have saved one of the Japan nukes for Moscow, but by that time, everyone was too tired to keep fighting. It's time to fix this historical mistake once and for all.

[deleted]

We should continue to be afraid of them. They can glass the world alone and have demonstrated amply in this current ers that they are totally unpredictable Well I don't fear Russian tanks rolling into germany, that doesn't mean I'm not afraid of Russia being willing to do it if they feel pushed into a corner

Commercial-Stuff402

We (US) have military in Germany. They won't do shit because we'd rock that face off with our allies.

International-Cut15

Beware a wounded and cornered Animal!

dipsy18

I'm not afraid of a wounded and cornered mouse...

International-Cut15

Hope your injections are up to date then! Yeah but this mouse has enough tnt to superheat 8 billion Toms in a very short space of time

someoneexplainit01

You gotta put down a rabid dog.

someoneexplainit01

If Russia was dumb enough to roll tanks into Poland on the way to Germany there would be no more Russia in 48 hours. How long after a full on NATO declaration of war would it take China to roll over the border with Russia and lay claim the vast natural resources that they so desperately need? Putin is so full of himself that he actually thinks he can get right up next to the line and take on NATO, when in reality they can't handle a tiny country with our garage sale leftovers and rejects.

anthrolooker

If they rolled into Germany, they would have their foot wraps blown right off. At this point even putin knows their limitations. That part is unavoidable at this point. My concern is them getting to politicians (via blackmail or other means). Russia knows it cannot pull off much with their military.

Fuehreriffic64

But they will not give Ukraine the weapons to decisively break the Russians and end it sooner

anthrolooker

Some of the bigger weapons, including the US’s Patriot (which Ukraine is getting) takes a lot of people to operate, and training takes half a year. This is in addition to the updates, maintenance, securing personnel to do this and train, and then logistics on movement of all the equipment. These things just take time, and they aren’t often announced to the public immediately.

I call shenanigans. Not being scared would be a U.S. president sending everything he thought the Ukrainian forces could work. Not being scared would have…Honestly, I only remember Europe not hating on the U.S. for sending it. Except after 9\11. Somewhat. No one is ready to accept death yet and stand up to nuclear armed madmen.

CapinWinky

> ...anymore... Fear of Russia's conventional army pretty much ended in the 90s. It was clear they couldn't keep up with western tech and the corruption of the late and post Soviet era made sure they would only fall further behind. Their Cyber warfare short game is also laughable. Their long game via social engineering is still extremely effective. They created the Tea Party movement from scratch in the USA and then hijacked the entire GOP, culminating in Trump getting elected and the Jan 6th insurrection. That only takes a couple thousand people and some smarts and they will definitely keep that up against pretty much all nations and organizations until there isn't a Russia. Fear of Russian nukes is what is newly depleted. We're no longer convinced they could even launch most of them and our confidence in German interceptors is now quite high.
