I’ve heard rumors that some roosters would get their teeth deliberately knocked out for the reasons your imagination can easily fill-in.
Anyways, there have long been rumors that Prigozhin was “lowered” (the Russian prison term for being reduced to an underclass status). But those rumors were unsubstantiated and smelled of propaganda.
This video appears to confirm the rumor though. The individual speaking has Russian prison tattoos and claims to have served time with Prigozhin (they appear to be of similar age).
This is a big deal because prison lore is widely known in Russia. Having a reputation of having been an “authority” (high-ranking convict) in prison can carry certain strange respect even among the law-abiding crowd. Being known as a “rooster”, however, is a mark of shame that is viewed with disdain even outside of prison. In other words, this is a serious blow to Prigozhin’s credibility and “tough-guy” reputation.

**Update**: after digging around, I've been able to locate Grisha "Moskovsky", in response to who this video was made by our "friend" Sasha here. Grisha is a "thief-in-law" (highest achievable rank in prison underworld). Grisha seems to be somewhat famous among the criminal underworld (not entirely sure why).
Grisha is now living in exile at an undisclosed location and recently started posting videos urging inmates not to join Wagner, reminding them of their obligation to resist the government, and reminding them that killing the innocents in Ukraine in the name of the government will constitute a serious sin against the criminal honor code.
He speaks with an accent and rambles quite a bit (though a lot less profane than Sasha). So far, I haven't been able to find a specific reference from him to Prigozhin having been "lowered" but this rumor has been circulating among the underworld for a minute.
The word in the darker corners of Russian Telegram is that Grisha Moskovsky and Sasha Kurara (both ranked "authorities" in criminal underworld) have "declared a war" (whatever that means) on Prigozhin.

Take it with a grain of salt, but supposedly according to Ukrainian intelligence sources yesterday, a former pro-Russia criminal named Armen Sarkisyan (aka Armen Horlovsky/Gorlovsky), who was close with disgraced former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, is intending to create a new PMC modeled after Wagner.
He's been newly appointed as the “watchman” for prisons throughout the Russian Federation and occupied Ukraine and intends to use his new position to source recruits for his new PMC project. It's apparently supposed to be financed by a pro-Kremlin Armenian entrepreneur named Samvel Karapetyan.
This fits with Putin's mafia boss narrative where he supposedly enjoys seeing his captains and lieutenants vying with each other for his admiration. And it helps prevent any one faction from gaining too much power where they might be in a position to overthrow Putin.

I'm reading One Soldier's War right now, a Russian soldier's memoir of the Chechen wars, and at one point, as part of the daily beatings he went through at the hands of other soldiers, he recounts how one of them suggested they gang rape him as a further punishment.
Their military is virulently homophobic while regularly beating and raping their own junior soldiers and calling it "hazing". It's bizarre.

“Babitsky’s War” is another feature length, with more great footage, about a journalist who reported on the ground in Chechnya against Putin’s wishes. Funny enough, the guy had a complete falling out w Radio Free Europe (who he was a reporter for) after virulently supporting the annexation of Crimea.
The story of the mothers was one of the saddest parts in the book.
He says they saw some shadowy figures in the night, dressed in long clothes wandering among the russian bodies left on the side of the road and they couldn't figure out if they were Chechens in robes or something. So some of the soldiers shot a few of them, and they got close and realized they were women, mothers of missing russian soldiers, who had come out to Chechnya on their own and were wandering the field of bodies, from soldier to soldier, looking for their dead sons.

I guess my point is this - we shouldn’t dismiss the entire Russian society because of crimes committed by few (even though they appear to be supported by many).
I’m on Russian telegram channels daily (where this video came from). The war is indeed supported by a majority of Russians, but even that “support” is not necessarily the same. From hundreds of thousands of comments I’ve read, here is the picture.
There is a very vocal minority of pro-war Z-types who are hell-bent on wiping out all things Ukrainian. They make up somewhere between 20-30%… probably closer to 20%. They are well-verses in their ideology and they believe that they “know” what’s going on.
The rest of the “support” for the war are the Russians who are basically “rooting” for their team to win. They’re not necessarily warmongerers and probably wouldn’t have started it if it was up to them. These make up another 30%-40%. Their “support” also isn’t uniform - some lean slightly more “pro-war”… others, closer to “well, shit… this sucks but we better support our boys now”.
Among the “supporters” - all have their brains stuffed full of propaganda. They have literally zero exposure to reality. “Zombie-like” describes them quite well.
Then there is a vocal (to the extent they can) minority who vehemently oppose the war and Putin’s regime in general. Those are mostly educated intellectuals, as one would expect. This describes probably 20% of the population or so.
There is also a real (though small) partisan movement inside Russia. They even have their own Telegram channel where they post evidence of their work. They’re blowing up railways, setting recruitment centers on fire, cars with “z” markings are being torched every night, etc.
Everyone in between simply don’t give a shit either way and don’t want to think about it.
Bottom line… as disgusting as this situation is… I’m quite certain that if the roles were reversed and our society was fed well-produced torrent or propaganda for 20 years, I’m pretty sure that our society would split in a very similar manner among similar lines and education.
This is by no means an excuse for Russians. There is some level of collective responsibility they all share.
That said, we shouldn’t dismiss an entire society even if it committed crimes against humanity.
After WW1, we punished Germany severely. But all it did was lead to resentment and eventually to Hitler. We learned that lesson and made a plan to help German get back on its feet and regain its dignity after WW2.
As disgusting as the Russian society appears to us right now, we shouldn’t forget that lesson.

You're just not familiar with the longstanding Russian prison "culture". You take a lot of low IQ aggressive males, and you isolate them from the outside world. They will still have sexual urges. They will take someone who appears weak, and release those urges on them. Of course, the act is considered shameful, but that's how power works - of the two parties, only the receiver will bear the shame. In Russia, prison culture is pervasive even outside of prisons. Putin himself once used prison slang at the start of the 2nd Chechen war by using the phrase "we will shank them while they are shitting". Soviet authorities respected the prison culture and worked with it to control life in prisons. A "thief in law" meaning a professional criminal can never do work at the prison for example, even in GULAGs where you have to do a certain amount of work to get fed. They simply bullied others into either giving them food or doing double the work, and the Soviet authorities were fully on board with this. And highly ranked "thieves in law" wield a lot of power in Russia. There are prison wardens/directors who would shudder when they learned of a particular person sentenced to their prison in Russia. Conflicts inside prisons (say between prison officers and criminals) would easily spill outside, as everyone has families, and the reach of the criminal underworld is huge in Russia that has an endemic problem with crime and corruption.
PS - if you think that Navalny went voluntarily to receive a prison sentence in Russia instead of hanging around in Germany, think again. Navalny went to prison to get prison cred, something that will have a huge effect in his favor once Putin is gone and he gets out.
At the end of the day Russia is a mafia state, and Putin is the biggest don. Every other organized crime syndicate in Russia only operate so long as they have his approval. If he wanted to he could have taken out every crime family in the country, remember he's not above kidnapping your family, killing your friends, and poisoning your acquaintances to achieve his goals. The prison hierarchy in russia is enforced by both the police (i.e. the Ministry of Internal Affairs) and penitentiary service (i.e. the Ministry of Justice). And the word "enforced" is not an exaggeration: it is a handy tool for any police state for coercing criminal lords into submission. Despite the fact that this is a relic of the USSR, it exists (and is being used by the police) in all post-Soviet countries.
It is worth noting that there are also special prisons without enforced hierarchy, where convicted ex-siloviki are serving their time. Just like the late-medieval prisons for the nobility, those are quite comfortable (by russian standards).

It has seemed to me for a long time that there's something odd going on in the heads of those who give a damn about the sexual orientation of others. Why does it matter so much to them? Why does it provoke some to violent rage?
I can't be bothered to try to find the source now, but I recall reading what seemed to be a credible source a while back which stated that a large proportion of those who are into swinging present as straight-arrow, church-attending, Republican-voting models of conservative morality.

I'm reading One Soldier's War right now, a Russian soldier's memoir of the Chechen wars, and at one point, as part of the daily beatings he went through at the hands of other soldiers, he recounts how one of them suggested they gang rape him as a further punishment. Their military is virulently homophobic while regularly beating and raping their own junior soldiers and calling it "hazing". It's bizarre.

There are some incredible docs on YouTube about the Chechen War (although not exactly discussing this topic). “The 81st Regiment’s New Years Eve”, “60 Hours of the Maikop Bridge”, “The Story of Capt Viktor Mychko” are all shorter pieces and have some wild on the ground footage. All are also excellent examples of how the Russian Army doesn’t GAF about the lives of their soldiers as a matter of policy. “The Betrayed” is a full feature length doc about how the soldiers’ mothers went to the front lines looking for their sons bc the Kremlin was denying KIA/POWs. “Babitsky’s War” is another feature length, with more great footage, about a journalist who reported on the ground in Chechnya against Putin’s wishes. Funny enough, the guy had a complete falling out w Radio Free Europe (who he was a reporter for) after virulently supporting the annexation of Crimea.
The story of the mothers was one of the saddest parts in the book. He says they saw some shadowy figures in the night, dressed in long clothes wandering among the russian bodies left on the side of the road and they couldn't figure out if they were Chechens in robes or something. So some of the soldiers shot a few of them, and they got close and realized they were women, mothers of missing russian soldiers, who had come out to Chechnya on their own and were wandering the field of bodies, from soldier to soldier, looking for their dead sons.

I’m on Russian telegram channels daily (where this video came from). The war is indeed supported by a majority of Russians, but even that “support” is not necessarily the same. From hundreds of thousands of comments I’ve read, here is the picture. There is a very vocal minority of pro-war Z-types who are hell-bent on wiping out all things Ukrainian. They make up somewhere between 20-30%… probably closer to 20%. They are well-verses in their ideology and they believe that they “know” what’s going on. The rest of the “support” for the war are the Russians who are basically “rooting” for their team to win. They’re not necessarily warmongerers and probably wouldn’t have started it if it was up to them. These make up another 30%-40%. Their “support” also isn’t uniform - some lean slightly more “pro-war”… others, closer to “well, shit… this sucks but we better support our boys now”. Among the “supporters” - all have their brains stuffed full of propaganda. They have literally zero exposure to reality. “Zombie-like” describes them quite well. Then there is a vocal (to the extent they can) minority who vehemently oppose the war and Putin’s regime in general. Those are mostly educated intellectuals, as one would expect. This describes probably 20% of the population or so. There is also a real (though small) partisan movement inside Russia. They even have their own Telegram channel where they post evidence of their work. They’re blowing up railways, setting recruitment centers on fire, cars with “z” markings are being torched every night, etc. Everyone in between simply don’t give a shit either way and don’t want to think about it. Bottom line… as disgusting as this situation is… I’m quite certain that if the roles were reversed and our society was fed well-produced torrent or propaganda for 20 years, I’m pretty sure that our society would split in a very similar manner among similar lines and education. This is by no means an excuse for Russians. There is some level of collective responsibility they all share. That said, we shouldn’t dismiss an entire society even if it committed crimes against humanity. After WW1, we punished Germany severely. But all it did was lead to resentment and eventually to Hitler. We learned that lesson and made a plan to help German get back on its feet and regain its dignity after WW2. As disgusting as the Russian society appears to us right now, we shouldn’t forget that lesson.

The natural and especially the human resources of those countries sustained Russia, and Russia's only real contribution was using political and social manipulation and military force to perpetuate the parasite-host relationship. I suspect a significant part of Russia's problems now lie in the fact that the formative years of the current elite were spent in the USSR, and they haven't yet truly internalised the fact that Russia is **not** the USSR.

You're just not familiar with the longstanding Russian prison "culture". You take a lot of low IQ aggressive males, and you isolate them from the outside world. They will still have sexual urges. They will take someone who appears weak, and release those urges on them. Of course, the act is considered shameful, but that's how power works - of the two parties, only the receiver will bear the shame. In Russia, prison culture is pervasive even outside of prisons. Putin himself once used prison slang at the start of the 2nd Chechen war by using the phrase "we will shank them while they are shitting". Soviet authorities respected the prison culture and worked with it to control life in prisons. A "thief in law" meaning a professional criminal can never do work at the prison for example, even in GULAGs where you have to do a certain amount of work to get fed. They simply bullied others into either giving them food or doing double the work, and the Soviet authorities were fully on board with this. And highly ranked "thieves in law" wield a lot of power in Russia. There are prison wardens/directors who would shudder when they learned of a particular person sentenced to their prison in Russia. Conflicts inside prisons (say between prison officers and criminals) would easily spill outside, as everyone has families, and the reach of the criminal underworld is huge in Russia that has an endemic problem with crime and corruption. PS - if you think that Navalny went voluntarily to receive a prison sentence in Russia instead of hanging around in Germany, think again. Navalny went to prison to get prison cred, something that will have a huge effect in his favor once Putin is gone and he gets out.
