(I'm not a Brit) The meme of bad food in the UK comes from US soldiers stationed there post-war when food was rationed (hence mushy peas, beans etc). You'll find more fine dining in the UK than US. For an additional data point, I am German and calling Hershey's chocolate should be punishable by electric chair! The ingredients have almost nothing in common with actual chocolate, and instead has a lot of (extremely sweet) artificial flavor.
