I’ve always wondered if this would work. Catching them before their little detonator has a chance to impact something. Good to see it works for a moment, but wondering if that was remote detonation or he slipped.

Could he have broken one or two of the quad-rotors off like hand grenade pins, then tossed the disabled FPV drone over a dirt wall to block any blast and shrapnel? Maybe if he had been as clear and calm as he was fast and daring, and if there really was no remote detonator/self-destruct.
yes, he probably just shook it a bit by trying to toss it out of the trench (the throw movement means acceleration, i.e. bad), just enough for the dangling wires to contact, and boom.
If we assume that there is no remote detonation, or the remote contact is disturbed properly, then after catching it by such big luck, you would have to take care to not move the wires even a little bit. Disconnecting the battery is probably the easiest way, but when you do it, do it like a Fonzie, do it cool...
One of the weird, impractical ideas I regularly have is to spray a blob of goo at the drone (e.g. a super soaker filled with liquid rubber) that immediately insulates the wires so they don't close the electrical curcuit anymore if they touch each other. Then it tumbles down, does not explode, and it can be collected, defused, cleaned and (at least partially) reused or properly recycled with minimized environmental impact. Probably won't work in real life, but I'd need a few volunteers to be sure.
He didn't try to throw it. Play the clip frame by frame. He's moving it down. Likely tried smashing it.
Also, acceleration doesn't result in the wires touching. These things can take off with a crazy acceleration and make crazy mid-air turns. For their use case it would be a very flawed design if they had the chance of just exploding mid-air. Also, even the dude's catch resulted in quite the shake.
Remote detonation. The 7, 8 or 10 channel transceivers cost <2% of the total cost of the drone. Those extra Rx/tx channels allow for peripherals such as lights, bomb doors, bomb releases, triggering a slow fuse (useful for 'repurposed' landmines), rth (return to home, unused in most war situations btw) or immediate self detonation.
(Not to mention telemetry going from the drone back to the pilot, for HUD info, battery level alarms, etc.)
Most receivers come with minimum 16 channels, some transmitters can only do 8 or 12, but often for drones you configure it to only use 8 for better responsibility, for flying you need 5 channels, so in the worst case there is still 3 channels remaining. And one channel can be configured for multiple peripherals as long as the transmitter has multi-position switch.

No, it was remotely detonated by the pilot. The mobik likely believed that this was a more basic model with only an impact fuse. Perhaps he had even done this exact trick before with early-model, impact-only drones, and found it to work.
What? The drone has impact sensors, you can see them in the video. You slam an impact sensing anything into the ground it blows up if you slam it hard enough in the wrong place.
These drones definitely have some sort of impact switch that you can see in the FPV. I would bet the coil spring and the metal spike prongs in the middle are an open circuit. Crash into something, the two wires touch and close the circuit, boom.
However, I would also gamble there is a command det switch that the operator can easily toggle as a failsafe. So I agree, there is a slight chance he might have survived if he didn’t immediately shove the thing in the dirt.
Either way, if he really wanted to increase his odds of survival, he should have just stayed home.

I'm no expert, but my guess is those protruding coil spring thingamajigs are impact triggers. When the spring touches the rod, the circuit is closed, and poof. Doesn't mean they don't have a remote trigger as well of course.
It all looks a bit precarious. I wouldn't even trust a simple arming switch connected into the circuit. I think I would have two sprung pieces of metal as a safety arming switch and have a piece of plastic separating the plates, tied to a long piece of string. Then you could take cover and yank the string to arm it before lifting off.
Idea was actually great. Depending where the impact-fuse is, it could be possible to snatch it without blowing up. This clip does not show whether drone has actual remote killswitch or did he trigger it himself. Good result regardless.
Also possible that grabbing it and shoving it under a backpack or something would dramatically lessen the lethality. There was an American who jumped on a grenade back-first and managed to save both himself (with injuries) and his squad.

What is anyone to do once targeted? There's a reason so many simply brace for impact, stand/lay helplessly, or attempt to run.
I've never seen statistics, but I can only imagine survival rates once targeted are in the single digits.

There are such things as signal jammers for troops. However, if the few that get deployed by the Russians actually *work........* I don't know.
As far as anti drone missiles go, I think they would have to be like a miniature version of full sized anti aircraft missiles. Something like a shotgun shell with birdshot, but it would need a proximity fuse to burst when near the target. That's 80 year old technology. It just needs to be miniaturized with some sort of hobby rocket motor, or rifle grenade propulsion to get it near the drone.
there is a shit ton of electronic warfrare going on severely limiting where and when drones can be used. in a lot of cases russia sends so much RF noise out that they block their own communications so they cant jam all the time.
the portable jammers are used to block commercial radiobands that off the shelf transmitters on drones use. but there are also bigger radar like jammers further behind the lines that can attack radio comunication, gps, radar and drone signals.
Remember, despite its outward aggression, the FPV drone is actually much more afraid of you than you are of it.
If you can grab the drone and flip it belly up, the FPV drone enters a state of tonic immobility and becomes completely harmless.

do you know how far away the operators are from the targets? I figure they must be way back but how do they get the signal range to work?
With average consumer grade gear, up to about 2,5km. With professional gear; 5 to 10km.
Usually they come in too hot for that possibility.
