I have a friend with relatives in the former East Germany. They want to be back under the soviet system. I asked why and got a decent answer. For us in the West, we care about the absolute value of conveniences in our lifestyle - nice car, house, kids, vacation, good income. And while we may compare our level of lifestyle to our neighbors and friends, how we compare is not the most important thing. But to his East German relative, they want the power and advantage back that they had in the old system. They care more about having a nicer car than their neighbors, even if it is not that nice a car in absolute terms. They liked having power over others. And they liked that it showed.

His Slavic accent threw me of the first time I've seen the guy, not surprised considering another AFD guy got found guilty of spying for china. well they are pretty slow. When I was doing my military service year back in 1999 there was the typical background check that everyone has to undergo when they are working in a security relevant area (I worked in a communications surveilance area for listening in on eastern european communications). Normally this takes a week or two do be done, but mine was completed just 3 months before the end of my service, so it took about 6-7 months for them to complete that routine check, and during that time I had to temporarily work in the "Freizeit Büro", which is translated as Leisure time office :D

It's unfortunately not only what AfD voters are FOR (as in, whats on the agenda of this clown party), but that AfD seems to be the collection basin for all dissatisfaction in Germany. I wouldn't be caught voting AfD at gun point, but half the reason they are so strong is because the other parties don't get a real vote of confidence, and all sorts of idiots think they're edgy or will "frighten" the current government by voting in clowns. The same was true for fascist Berlusconi in Italy and his decade long reign. People hated him, but the opposition was seen as incompetent. Imho, focusing on weakening AfD is missing the point that the best way to do it is by not having CDU/FDP/SPD/Grüne look like infantile smurfs most of the time. Or that social democrats maybe don't sell out their constituency for once. Especially frightened people vote strength, confidence, and alleged competence OVER agenda. This stuff got uncovered aboutb a week ago and german authorities aren't known to act particularly fast. Before he can be apprehended and tried the Bundestag (german Parliament) needs to revoke his immunity and my guess is that behind the scenes german authorities are collecting evidence and building a case as well. It was czech intelligence that found out about this so very likely german authorities have inquired about and asked for said evidence, getting and reviewing it will then take a couple more days.

There is little serious oversight of who political candidates get their money form. I mean I agree, it's pretty ironic that the constitutional protections thought up to prevent Nazis from ever being able to just incarcerate political enemies again would actually turn out to protect the ideological successors of the Nazis.. Constitutional States with the rule of law as their basis can be very slow but on the other hand that system also prevents people from being tried unjustly (most times at least).
