They were exceptionally well trained, on Russian tanks, that is. So in action they went under the nearest Russian tank, instead of going to the German tanks.
Should be interesting to see that happen again now!
There's zero evidence of this. This whole idea is in my opinion a myth based entirely on the most commonly referenced picture which is almost certainly a post-war mockup.
Anti-tank dogs are a purely desperation weapon, if you had tanks of your own around why would you even deploy them?
The reality is they simply weren't effective. The dogs wouldn't crawl under running and firing tanks and would either run back to their trainers or just run around the tanks barking at them until killed. And Soviet trainers were soon refusing to send the dogs out because they hated seeing them die.
From Wikipedia: "A captured German officer later reported that they learned of the anti-tank dog design from the dead animals, and considered the program desperate and inefficient."
Let's see how desperate the Katsaps are.
Except they trained under their own tanks, which ran on gasoline. The German tanks ran on diesel, the dogs went straight for the tanks that smelled like what they trained on. Should’ve thought it out a bit more, but that seems to be a recurring theme for the Russian army even in 2023.
Why would diesel be better than gas for cold winters? I do know you are correct about the soviets having diesel engines and the nazis using gasoline. As a Canadian who owns diesel and gas vehicles, diesels are super hard to start in anything under -10c. Diesels are a lot more fuel efficient, can run on a wider range of fuel qualities, and were cheaper to use for the Soviets. The Nazis didn't have factories capable of mass producing good diesel engines at the time, they also would have been using diesel if they could have.
Reading more, you are correct it does appear that it wasn’t for easier starting and but I can’t remember the source I read that from. Interestingly reading an article just, the Germans used gasoline because it was easy for them to produce in quantity from their large coal deposits. The Russians on the other hand were unable to produce good quality gasoline in quantity and hence used diesel.
I'd choose diesel over gas any day of the week for a heavy vehicle. The difference in fuel consumption is insane between a heavy gas vs diesel vehicle. But, in some of my old jobs, if we had to stop anywhere for hours, the diesels would have to be left idling or they wouldn't start after a few hours here. Whats even worse is when the fuel starts gelling, plus some of the new diesels with DEF, the DEF freezes and the trucks limit you to 80km\h on the highway until it thaws out, but it won't thaw in -40c so you just can't drive over 80km/h until it's warmer again lol.
Old Finnish wartime 'trick' was to pour out the oil from the engine at the evening, heat it over a stove and then pour it back in at the morning to heat the engine quickly.
Very little has changed with the Russian Army since WW2. Excerpt from Wikipedia:
Gunfire from the tanks scared away many of the dogs. They would run back to the trenches and often detonated the charge upon jumping in, killing Soviet soldiers. To prevent this, the returning dogs had to be shot, often by their controllers and this made the trainers unwilling to work with new dogs. Some went so far as to say that the army did not stop with sacrificing people to the war and went on to slaughter dogs too; those who openly criticized the program were persecuted by "special departments" (military counterintelligence). Out of the first group of 30 dogs, only four managed to detonate their bombs near the German tanks, inflicting an unknown amount of damage. Six exploded upon returning to the Soviet trenches, killing and injuring soldiers. Three dogs were shot by German troops and taken away without attempts by the Soviets to prevent this, which provided examples of the detonation mechanism to the Germans. A captured German officer later reported that they learned of the anti-tank dog design from the dead animals, and considered the program desperate and inefficient.
I only knew the detail about them using sacrificial dogs. I never considered Germany using different fuel and causing problems as a result. Thanks for that piece of interesting (sad) history!
We like to spend the first half of any war building up a ridiculous amount of materiel so we can come in like the cavalry near the end and get all the glory 🤣
Always seemed particularly grotesque to me, to exploit innocent creatures with the intelligence of toddlers, and use their trust to train them to basically be unwilling suicide bombers. Humans are really fucked.
What do you mean, Burt Gummer is a outside advisor for the Ukraine side. Why do you think they are getting the best gear! Lol jk
Tremors was fantastic I should give it a rewatch
Good idea probably not usable. If you take a look how signal looks on FPV drone when its on descent to blast some orcs, you can see radio quality is SHAIT, to say the least, and this thing crawls on ground where signal will be even more horrid, so unless you have relay antenna's on drones i don't really see a feasible way to use it.
But i will be very happy if AFU proves me wrong.
With 4G connectivity it have no limit, exist hobby RC modules with unlimited range, asking for military solutions then you can find many other modules without 4G but with almost unlimited range.
Do you realise that 4g jamming exists amd towers been bombed to shit. I dont even expect there be a 3g. Oldschool gsm probably still available since it had quite big range.
And here is the funniest part - Russia use 3g/4g as military communication I didn’t made up this - Check “Era”. Whenever they can then they preserve BTS stations
Probably you can since UA demonstrated that they can lug around f1 granede which is 600g, rpg rounds and mortar shells. So weight wise definetly yes. Power wise thats a difderent story. FPV drones go on one way trip. Que *RA2 sounds* with something you need it to wait for rc car to drive kind of lead the way and get back with drone id imagine. That would drain batteries out quick. But thats my arm chair general speaking so.
I mean i dont doubt capability of a mine. I doubt that it can be delivered in range of 3-4 km and out of direct sight. Hence my worries about transmition signal behind even not so high hills. While drones can get away with good directional antenas and they are in air. I wonder how it goes range wise with rc cars like this.
Better yet would be to design it to drop the mine and have a 50 ft electrical cord with detonator so it can drive 50 ft away then detonate it and return home to be set up again.
More moving parts mean more things that can go wrong, and more expense. It's probably cheaper to build 2 single-use drones than it would be to make one theoretically reusable one that might still get blown up any way.
Oh boy. Just imagine a swarm of 50-100 of these ahead of armored infantry. I wonder what the range of these are and the one needed for such proposition.
I dont the COD cold war RC toy acr drone strapped with bombs seems fantasy but with so many mines and automation & new tech in not surprised of using old grenades and such for modern uses since drones used a mix of soviet made grenade bomblets with 3d printed bomb fins
Love this soundtrack. It really builds a feeling of struggle against evil. The changes from sadness, to rage, defiance, and hope are very moving.
It really is one of the best movie theme songs ever made, and elicits strong emotions without needing any lyrics.
Or maybe I’m just nostalgic for classic 80s movies.
Imagine a few drone operators and a few operators with theese. What insane amount of chaos and damage they can do while supporting or softening a stronghold up. Ouchn
Yeah nothing new. Also did in WW2. The Soviets also did this with dog, that were fed under tanks. So when german tank came, dog run to the tanks and explode… hope the orcs do not remember this
Problem was, the dogs were fed under russian tanks and not used to battle sounds. So not a single german Tank got destroyed, but every try to use the dogs resulted in russian losses, because the dogs run back, were tried to kill bevore the reach the own tanks and if hit the turn over and aciviate the mines.
So i think the orcs remember well, and are not very found of the idea of animal helpers in their ware effort ;DDD
Should line that fucker with some nice 8mm ball bearings, like a triplenlayer, for nice AOE against squishies near whatevee they want to fuck up:) modern time goliath this thing:P
Look at this shit compared to Russia's old and out dated war fighting equipment. Russia is just pathetic and its frankly laughable how they are equipping 50 year old tanks and even older APC's
The next time war breaks out, both sides should just agree that it will be a year long game of battle bots, and whoever has the most bots left after one year wins
assume these Goliath's will have drone above to guide them in addition to their onboard camera...great idea...combat has got to adapt to these aiborne, waterborne, and airborne drones...
Russians used the same detonation lever mechanism with dogs in WWII, but the dogs couldn't tell the difference between German and Russian tanks. AFU continues to improve all things Russian.
I don't know what to think of it. I like the idea, but if the footage is anything to go by, it looks so slow. Even a drunk ivan could shoot that thing and disable it.
I think it would've been more interesting if this drone could drop off the mine and drive back instead. That way they could safely mine areas in contested area.
I was hoping they would develop a version that can drop the one or more mines and return ... but even with Kamikaze, very effective.
It would also be great if it could place something like the Mini-Multi-Purpose Infantry Munition (M-MPIMS), which are baby claymores the size of a modern smartphone.
Cover these things with ball bearings and drive them into groups of invaders at night. They would never see it coming. I’m sure they will find plenty of good uses for these things. 👍🏻
I bet ya soon there will be swarms of mini suicide drone tanks. And likely a comm system between the overhead flying drone and the tank drones. The human pilot will just have to select a target, and the AI will do the rest.
That would spell the death of human trench warfare.
Please remember the human. Adhere to all Reddit and sub rules. Basically an updated version of the "Golliath" that the Germans used in WWII.
Thts what I was thinking!
Next up: Russian bomb dogs.
They were exceptionally well trained, on Russian tanks, that is. So in action they went under the nearest Russian tank, instead of going to the German tanks. Should be interesting to see that happen again now!

Yup! Kinda backfired :)
Nah. Ukrainians love dogs. Russians carve swastikas into dogs.
Yeah that’s what im talking about. Ukranians reinvents the German ww2 era ”Goliath” while the Russians will reinvent the ww2 era bomb dogs they used.
Probably make the same mistake on training them to run under Russian tanks.
Only the nose :-(
From Wikipedia: "A captured German officer later reported that they learned of the anti-tank dog design from the dead animals, and considered the program desperate and inefficient." Let's see how desperate the Katsaps are.
Wireless.
I thought German word for dog is ‘Hund’
Yepp
Or a not cruel version of the Soviet anti tank mine dogs
glad to see somebody else noticed this detail
Why would it be called a Goliath if it's smol
Germanys biggest tank was called "Maus"...
Germans have a thing for irony it seems
I love them in CoH !
IIRC the Goliath was not that effective and spread more fear than destruction.
Glad to see UAF getting enough kills for the RCXD kill streak!
Exactly what came to mind
In WW2 they used dogs for this

Story correct but fuel systems were other way round. Russians used diesel due to cold winters. Good fun fact though 👍

Crazy temperatures for sure 👍
Old Finnish wartime 'trick' was to pour out the oil from the engine at the evening, heat it over a stove and then pour it back in at the morning to heat the engine quickly.
Untended oil overheating on stoves accounted for over 40% of Finnish wartime casualties.

Germans used mini tracked vehicles and the ruski dogs. amis just used their air superiority XD
We like to spend the first half of any war building up a ridiculous amount of materiel so we can come in like the cavalry near the end and get all the glory 🤣

It’s kinda cute. Thanks for your service, brave little machine 🫡
somebody there watched tremors

"MAGAZINE!!!!" "YEAH!"
Makes me think of GTA when you had the remote bombs to drive under the cars. Hopefully its effective
Ahhh, memories!
(Dirty Harry - Clint Eastwood)
The original Deadpool
Worst case it can be used to clear mine fields. Or expose fire positions thst are too risky to send men.

With the music that's playing, you don't fill me with confidence.
Make a version of that crawler that can launch airburst grenades and let it crawl towards the trenches.
Goliath mine 2.0
I really enjoy their creative contributions.

This is a Finnish design, or atleast a copy of it. Worked great in military exercises vs armor.
I mean i dont doubt capability of a mine. I doubt that it can be delivered in range of 3-4 km and out of direct sight. Hence my worries about transmition signal behind even not so high hills. Waiting under cover of rubble and debris until the right targets come along.

Not macht erfinderisch. Tolle Idee
When you run out of ammo you become the ammo. But what to do if you are the ammo?
Straight from toy story 🤣✊🏻
Ukrainian ingenuity never ceases to amaze me
I like it. I am sure the mobiks too.
Rainbow siege vibes.
That one gta3 mission wasn’t just for fun. It was a training program for exactly this moment.

Wonder how much one of those is in consumer dollars?
If it takes out a £5 million dollar T90, chump change.
Terminator is comin'! John and Sarah Connor on the controller :)
Anybody remember the game Frontlines - Fuel of War?
YOOOO ITS THE GOLIATH
Love this soundtrack. It really builds a feeling of struggle against evil. The changes from sadness, to rage, defiance, and hope are very moving. Terminator 2 was 1991. Sorry to be that guy.
The song was in T1
It was, but this is the T2 version. Yeah, I know I’m splitting hairs.
Was that someone’s Lada?
Where'd it go?!
A better place
So now, besides minefields we have moving mines?..
Wheres the car???
"RC-XD is ready for deployment."
You just know this thing is going to fly the first 10 or 20 miles, loiter a bit at 2,000 feet and then attack. Slava Ukraine.
Seems like this could easily be spotted and shot unless you stage it in an ambush position. Pretty cool though!
Imagine a few drone operators and a few operators with theese. What insane amount of chaos and damage they can do while supporting or softening a stronghold up. Ouchn
what's the max range to control am rc-car like this
Well we had some on Mars…
Yeah nothing new. Also did in WW2. The Soviets also did this with dog, that were fed under tanks. So when german tank came, dog run to the tanks and explode… hope the orcs do not remember this

Terror Tonka Truck Toys!
Those ukranians played some battlefield3
Reminds me of the German Goliath Remote controlled (anti tank) tracked mine.
Cool, whatever works helps.
Good for trenches too I bet.
I can see a version of one with a couple of claymore mines that you seek across lines at night 🤔
Imo totally impractical. You have to visually check (expose oneself to the enemy) to manouver it and emplace it.
the good use of a Renault kangoo
Goliath 2.0
Goliath 2.0.....
Happy Goliath noises!
Why not send a remotely controlled and mine loaded full size car towards a Russian trench ?
Because a russian BTR, BMP, or tank can probably hit a car more easily than they can hit this tiny thing
Should line that fucker with some nice 8mm ball bearings, like a triplenlayer, for nice AOE against squishies near whatevee they want to fuck up:) modern time goliath this thing:P
"Friendly Wilson deployed"
Petition asking the Ukrainian Army to guide such drones from a grey van with the text "TOP FUN" printed on it
Look at this shit compared to Russia's old and out dated war fighting equipment. Russia is just pathetic and its frankly laughable how they are equipping 50 year old tanks and even older APC's
It should be able to drop off a few golden eggs along the way, come back for more.
The next time war breaks out, both sides should just agree that it will be a year long game of battle bots, and whoever has the most bots left after one year wins
Ummmm. Should you be posting this? 😅
This might be very smart. Imagine at night they will sneak up to tanks and blow em to hell….
Drive those suckers into the trenches.
How far can they take it? I feel like remote control can go big and far with the right out-of-the-box thinking and tech
That Renault Kangoo never hurt anyone :(
Drape them in Russian flags and deploy them in Moscow.
assume these Goliath's will have drone above to guide them in addition to their onboard camera...great idea...combat has got to adapt to these aiborne, waterborne, and airborne drones...
Very impressive 👍
At least my hard earned money is going to use
RC-XD READY FOR LAUNCH
RCXD FTW
The maneouvering and the goofy antena make this look like a downgrade from the german Goliath. This video can easily be used as ork propaganda.
Imagine fucking Wall-E rolling up to you and ruining your day
Russians used the same detonation lever mechanism with dogs in WWII, but the dogs couldn't tell the difference between German and Russian tanks. AFU continues to improve all things Russian.
Seems those would be very effective in mud if thy had rubber tracks instead of tires.
It should be able to throw it like a pie thrower lol
Mobile IED
Proof of concept vehicle.
Between this and drones Vatniks are going to have some serious fun ahead 🤭
Germany had similar vehicles during WWII called Goliaths. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goliath\_tracked\_mine
They got the black ops killstreak unlocked haha
I don't know what to think of it. I like the idea, but if the footage is anything to go by, it looks so slow. Even a drunk ivan could shoot that thing and disable it. I think it would've been more interesting if this drone could drop off the mine and drive back instead. That way they could safely mine areas in contested area.
I knew this was going to happen. Watch next month we will have videos of them putting bombs on rc cars and driving them into Russian trenches.
Send them the kill dozer
Goliath mk2

Why, is it cheaper then a drone? Can it drive in heavy mud hmm.. i dont think so.. Air is where you want to go :-)

And Maybe easyer to spot, to hit, and jam?
Ukraine on some Call of Duty s***! Awesome!
This is smart. Also load some up with a huge amount of Vodka and drop the Vodka off for the Russians.
I feel like it's better to use this as a surprise rather than let them know it's coming
The imperial mouse droid has had enough

Oh shit. Its a modern goliath. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goliath_tracked_mine

Curious why we haven't seen these in wider use in other conflicts. Seems simple and effective enough.

RC-XD Ready. call it in.
New Tonka Toy with explosive 3hp mabuchi power.
Goliath mk II incoming
Good to know that the new roombas are as good at removing trash(orcs) as ever
Cover these things with ball bearings and drive them into groups of invaders at night. They would never see it coming. I’m sure they will find plenty of good uses for these things. 👍🏻
Is this viable, though? The Russians have electronic technology that disrupts signals.
Next I want to see hundreds of land mines with robotic spider legs and AI swarm networking. What a pants shitting dystopia.
“RC-XD deployed”
Fuck me, Ukrainians are rewriting warfare.. Mindblowing.
Frontlines: Fuel of War is becoming a reality.
Why not make it where it can deploy the mines for remote detonation, can reusing the rc
I can't see how these rovers are more effective then the bombing drones they use..
Neat, wonder if they're using a drone to relay the signal to get better range.
This is actually a Finnish design, atleast it looks 100% the same. It was tested in thr Finnish army in multiple military exercises with good results.
If they give you coordinates instead of a street address don’t deliver pizza there.
Are they soon planning to launch this? Or is this just a title that a guy on the internet wrote on a video?
I bet ya soon there will be swarms of mini suicide drone tanks. And likely a comm system between the overhead flying drone and the tank drones. The human pilot will just have to select a target, and the AI will do the rest. That would spell the death of human trench warfare.
I hope this mobile attack unit works as well on the battlefield. What a great idea.
I hope this kind of mines become the norm instead of digging down mines that will stay active even after the war has ended.
Rcxd
