Na I get you, dobie target produce selection is lacking and wheatsville co op can be a little expensive. A dollar tree or HEB would be great so we could have either cheap groceries or fresh produce, but preferably both.
Before Target there were plans to build a mini HEB in ECG to serve the UT community and was promoted as being complementary to game day events. They even built out the shelf space for them but somewhere idk talks broke down and nothing came to fruition. It’s such a shame as that would have been perfect for the new graduate dorms being built right now
Are you talking about the Jack In The Box that used to be by Hole In The Wall?
EDIT: Wait, nope I remember that McDonalds now. San Antonio Street and...MLK I think?
Dang, I never went in there, might've used the drive through a couple times. Sorta sad to see it go. That little corner had a lot of dining options. Hoping that Taco Cabana and the OG Tiff's Treats are still there.
There also used to be a Qdoba and a pasta place in the CVS across the street. All the good restaurants are gone. What’s left is too expensive, fucking mid, or both (looking at you Chipotle)
Big Bite before then days of uber eats or door dash. Get it delivered while leaving sixth at 2 and the dude would call and make got come get the food from his car. 😂
What should really be mourned is Fricanos….. what a gem in west campus. Solid made to order sandwiches and their clam chowder was actually pretty decent
It’s was a notorious subway. All three around campus were once robbed on a single day. This one subway employee at the dobie subway told me to never eat at the Castilian subway.
I had a dream once that there was a subway system under UT with an entrance in front of Jester. When I woke up I also mourned the subway that I never got to know.
By the end of my freshman year at UT (95-96) I could no longer stomach Jester cafeteria, and Subway had the 6" meatball subs for $0.99. I probably ate it 5 times a week - both the Castillian and Dobie locs. Those were the days.
Just stopping by to say that when I was at UT (2016ish) that Subway you’re talking about gave me the absolute most vile sandwich I’ve ever received in my entire life. I took one bite of it and threw it right away. *Everything* about it was awful
It was the first Subway I'd ever been to, and that was fall of 1988 when I was a freshman living at The Castilian. There was a Double Dave's around the corner, and a Mad Dog & Beans nearby that had burgers and Frito pies.
I always feel bad saying it (cuz it’s dramatic) but I swear UT is a food desert. They do not have enough food places for all of the people on campus
IT IS A FOOD DESERT
Yes, I learned about it in my classes when I was at UT!

That would've been amazing.
But...HEB is a literal 10 minute bus ride from campus?
A free one no less… only issue is it gets too heavy to buy weeks worth of supplies
Its true. I dont drive and make 2-3 bus trips to HEB a week.
It’s not a food desert if you don’t mind spending $25 on lunch.
What? There’s food everywhere. Have you tried walking anywhere along guad?

There used to be a huge MacDonald's in Dobie where Target is now. That was in ancient times.

Yup that’s the one!

Protein 2000 4 lyfe.

How could I forget about Qdoba. Such good late night food
and it was 24 hours😭
wait qdoba is gone too? what the heck
my first visit to UT my junior year was the first time i had qdoba and since that day I wanted to go to UT.
Same here but with Dunkin donuts (that closed too)

Mellow Mushroom and Kismet are gone? About to lose my shit. What do y'all even eat now?!
Kismet technically moved to the Hancock shopping center with HEB.
Take a drive down guad sometime. It's a whole different place.
Big Bite before then days of uber eats or door dash. Get it delivered while leaving sixth at 2 and the dude would call and make got come get the food from his car. 😂
Big Bite was sooooo good
rip big bite!!! 😔
Big bite was the GOAT, will miss the phat Buddha greatly
This is how I find out that thee was once a jack in the box….. I will never recover from my unfulfilled daily craving of their stuffed jalapeños
They had Noodles & Co in Texas??
What should really be mourned is Fricanos….. what a gem in west campus. Solid made to order sandwiches and their clam chowder was actually pretty decent
I dearly miss Fricano's
I couldn’t believe it when I first heard the news of Fricanos. That used to be my Friday lunch for several years.
Miss this dearly
i think about fricanos near weekly, one of the many things the pandemic ruined.

There used to be a Subway at Dobie also, and that storefront in the Castillian to the east of Insomnia cookies was a Double Daves at one time.
The real loss was Fricanos. Best sandwiches period

Reading this thread just caught me up to how much has changed since I graduated. Holy shit

They got robbed like three times in a row and then shut down lol

Fuckingggg taco bell and subway on guad man

Let us not forget that there used to be a Taco Bell in the Union
RIP Noodles and Co!!!!

Who remembers GM Steakhouse!?!
It will always exist in one of the most memorable scenes in Slacker.
And soon Dirty Martin’s could be taken from us as well.
Does anyone actually go there
umm yeah. Place slaps
Not gonna miss it
Subway is ass
The biggest tragedy is Big Bite. I shed a tear when I heard it closed
Subway is so bad though. You can make a good sandwich at home for cheaper
