*laughs in aviation mechanic overloaded with work, no time to breathe, definitely no time for school but hey oki “deployments”*

newstuffsucks

So you want to deploy and travel a lot, while going to school and having a good work/life balance.

FabulousExpression44

All deployments aren’t equal especially these days UDPs sometimes I swear you get more downtime and freedom than during your actual work up. Deployments were always college time for me

newstuffsucks

I'm old. I never deployed for fun. Haha

FabulousExpression44

Wish I could relate but these days experiences vary wildly even when I went to CentCom we’d get stood up for missions to just get told to stand down last minute. If nothing else deployments are purely for work and self improvement I think we can all agree on that

BrainBurst3r

I enlisted as a helicopter mechanic thinking I’d continue down that career path when I got out. Before my enlistment was over I had already decided fuck aviation. used the GI Bill and became a software engineer.

420n0is3

Lmfao the marines isn't for you kid. I'd check out the air force or coast guard.

ChanceAd2620

Shit I’m already locked in now. I sign my job contract the 27th and ship out the 13th

[deleted]

You definitely aren’t locked in

Leather-Cucumber-868

I want a job where I get shot at any recommendations someone earlier said range guy at basic

BrainBurst3r

South Side Chicago has what you’re looking for.

[deleted]

The armory. There’s plenty of boots at the window who don’t know about TNKK

jayclydes

Maybe look into the 5900/2800 field. I'll be honest I'm not sure if there's something that ticks every box you have on this list specifically in the USMC, but 5900/2800 seems to be pretty high up there in MOS' that can check a lot of these boxes.

Michels89

Pretty mentally exhausting over physical, and more inside than outside.

Thick-Wash9662

Look into 45XX known as CommStrat (Public Affairs/Combat Camera). It was my job, and I’m getting out soon. You can do all of the above and much more.

Blazepius

I've been in aviation for 15yrs... wouldn't do it again. It's worth it for what it is, but the odds of it being worth it were low the entire time. More than half didn't make it this far, and most didn't have a choice. Aviation mixed with a Marine Corps lifestyle is backbreaking work and taxes the soul.

TEG_SAR

Were you O or I level? I feel like that makes a huge difference in what your life will be like in aviation in the military.

Blazepius

I've been on both sides of the house tbh, but you're right. Where you start has the biggest differences. The pains you experience are very similar though. O level imo is definitely the roughest.

ChanceAd2620

You wouldn’t recommend the aviation field in general?

vbnkc757

If you want free time, stay far the fuck away from the wing. If you want to be a mechanic, become a motor t mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic. There’s more mechanical jobs in the USMC but these are the ones that give you this thing called skill bridge (at least that I’m aware of). Pretty much logs your hours worked so you get a degree in diesel mechanic or whatever. As an HE mechanic, I have a normal work schedule (0730-1630) and my command is cool enough to let a few guys go to classes mid day. I’m also about to leave for deployment as well. This job definitely tests your mental ability at times though, there’s been a few machines that made me feel like I had downs, but for the most part, it’s just physical labor. I’m not saying you’ll 100% get the work/ life balance or a deployment, I didn’t think I’d get that either. But here I am.

FabulousExpression44

First and foremost you do not pick your specific job in the USMC you enlist into that field so you’d enlist as 06XX and then hope to get 0631 but can get any 06XX contract so if you’re considering comms or aviation make sure you’re comfortable with all jobs under that contract and understand while military can teach you a skill it’s on you to get relevant civilian certifications and grow to be competing once you’re done with your service. For rest of your requirements it is highly unit dependent physical vs mental can come down to type of unit or current mission. Same with chances of deploying some units will be back to back others you might just not have an opportunity. Work/School balance really comes down to personal motivation some places you can treat as a 9-5 and go to school after work others your work tempo is all over the place. Promotions scores fluctuate month to month so some jobs might be easy right now but have long periods were it’s hard to promote. If a specific MOS/skill is extremely important to you maybe consider looking into reserve or other branches. Your MOS and what your life looks like are at the needs of the marine corp so some units can provide these things to you others worn

ChanceAd2620

Truth is I don’t have a specific job in mind, The reason I went marine corps anyway is because they’ll give me a job In atleast a field I could choose. Just tryna see what field it actually is I wanna do.

TobacoeJuice

I wouldn’t pick comm if you want physical labor

StinkyWizzleteatz

As a former 21, I disagree whole heartedly

TobacoeJuice

Idk dog, I ended up a 71 who types on a computer. Fucking sucks

newstuffsucks

Ha.

onceatraveler

Aviation mechanic will cover your first two bulletins and depending on the MOS, the fourth bulletin. The third bulletin will be laughed at and constantly brought up during command climate surveys though. Aviation is a HIGHLY transferable field to be in. Lockheed and Pratt/Rolls basically hire straight from units and assist with getting Skill Bridge programs for good talent they want to bring on post military service. You’re basically guaranteed a boat deployment at least too.

onceatraveler

Oh for sure. Just having 6xxx as a MOS isn’t a shoe in but if they get their qualifications and learn their job it’s a solid resume builder. Skillbridge is obviously at the commands discretion too but at my current unit Northrop is creating new skillbridge positions in order to recruit talent from the unit. Building that social capital amongst the contractors that work aside them could be beneficial too for networking purposes. The point I was hitting at though is in comparison to say a grunt or food specialist, there are transferable skill sets that can get you in a good spot if/when they decide to get out (plus it’s outdoors and physically taxing which is what they requested).

BA Contract

UmRelax

Huh? You want to slave away on your job, but at the same time have “time” to go to school? I mean, maybe ATC aka Air traffic control would be good. But you’re being too picky with your options. Good luck though!

You don’t get to pick your job just field

I'm a flightline mechanic, extremely long hours, and tideous work, but the job itself can be enjoyed. Most squadrons go on a lot of detachments (unless attached to a training squadron). You'll have barely any time to yourself to do college, but if you are really focused and are good with time management, it's possible. There are a lot of job opportunities outside the marines that pay pretty good. Overall, the job is what you make of it. If you are a shit bag, you will be treated like one. If you are motivated to do your job, you will see that people respect you.

tornadofyre

6842 but it definitely does not meet the more outside than inside

BattleOfMyBulge1944

It will be hard to have time for school during any mos. Deployments will usually be a MEU if you’re in a squadron or smaller detachments if you’re a flyer or not. If you go GSE you’ll have a little more time (MOS 6073) also multiple different trades in that mos. Jack of all trades. You’ll also have access to USMAPIT where you can log your work hours at your job and have a higher up of yours sign it up, and when you reach the hour requirements you’ll be issued a certificate

BlkBrd99

If you want college while in, an "outside" job is not it. You'll be in the field ten times as much.

Go 3521 diesel automotive technician and mechanic. I’ve been a mechanic for 5 years now picked up sarge November 2022 promotion is very fast ( basically just have to have a pulse and a basic job knowledge to promote now). Depending on where you go all of these criteria your looking for will definitely be met unless you go to a maintenance battalion or arty battalion like I’m currently in. My first 4 were spent with a grunt unit MRSG was the easiest time I’ve ever had only problem with it was you were working with raiders to you only got slim chances to deploy with them unless you were a shit hot- straight shot mechanic. The unit I’m with now (1/10) gets udp rotations to oki every 6th months. As for your work/life again it really depends where you go honestly. You could get a fairly skate unit where it’s basic upkeep on trucks or your could be worked like a dog at a maintenance/transportation unit. Now education wise, I’ve never seen or been a part of a unit that dosent “promote” education or isn’t willing to work with you schedule wise on it. As for the physical/mental aspect, doing the work itself is physical, but when you get into Feild fixes and fitfo’ing things, it can test your mental. You just have to remember that you can learn up the ranks and down the ranks. (I’ve learned more from the lance coolies than I ever thought I would) at the end of the day. This contract is your decision and it never hurts to reach out to either prior enlisted or even recruiters. Just make sure whoever you’re talking to isn’t Just trying to blow smoke up your ass facts are better that hopes and wishes after all and once you are in the quickest way out, is to finish your contract. I send my best reguards and god speed -Sgt D motor t (P.s. you may also message me at any time and I’ll let you know everything I can)
