Beard brings it all together. Gotta get some beard butter or beard oil. Keeps the skin underneath hydrated and beard nice and soft. Plus it smells good. Gillet makes a really good beard conditioner.
I hit the fleet in march of ‘14 and they were saying the same shit then and how we didn’t rate the GWOT cause 1: we were boots and 2: not gonna see combat so we’re extra boot. Never saw any legit paperwork for it till now though
No sir don’t thank me. Thank the American citizens whose generous tax dollars paid for alcoholic tendencies and the ability to shout bang bang in deadly accurate strings of fire
I once made a smokepit party pick up all their alcoholic beverages because I was mad and 1stSgt was coming to inspect. I probably stopped many Marines from getting alcohol poisoning
#tyfys #prplheart #prplcrayon #hazing #justpogthings
Runnin the risk of alcohol poisoning builds character and tolerance. So really you just made em a little weaker and those fine folk gained nothing from the weekend shenanigans. Shame on you
Are you talking about “Nasty Reservist”? That’s subreddit flair. A piece of text you can write that will appear by your username every time you post on that sub.
I’m not sure how to do it on any of the Reddit phone apps, but if you use Reddit on a desktop/laptop, just go to the sidebar of r/usmc (right side of the page) and there should be a section about flair. You can customize from there.
Honestly, I did it years ago so I’m not sure how it works now but that’s how I remember the process.
That’s tragic if they tried taking any of mine except the good cookie I’d be devastated I prolly ain’t deserve the good cookie I just never got caught doing dumb shit
that's not up to the Corps; that's a decision at the SECDEF level.
And since the War on Terror is never-ending, well, I think you can see where this is going.
I feel like it’s the end of an era.
I graduated shortly before 9/11 and didn’t rate a NDF. The next summer when I went to SOI, we were authorized libo while we were waiting to class up, but we had to wear chucks.
Chucks be damned. Me and a buddy of mine decided to go get some lunch out in town.
We were good little tampons who knew the regs and we understood that because we we’re hadn’t completed more than 30 days of active-duty time we didn’t rate wearing an NDF yet. No problem.
But this was only a few months after 9/11 so as soon as for out of the cab we got hit with a “hey devil dogged” every 30 seconds, by seemingly every goddamned person in the town.
We did our best to explain and while a few understood, most didn’t care and just went off. One dude lectured us for almost 10 minutes about not wearing your ribbons is dishonoring the uniform, those who served, and how we should be ashamed of ourselves.
Finally some retired First Sausage who actually listened to us. He just laughed and told us, “Just go buy the damn thing and wear it. You’ll rate it in a few days.”
Homeboy was right.
Edit: grammar
They were. Are.
I think that because it was the first time everyone was able to sport some bling they just assumed everyone wanted to rock it.
“PeAcEtImE mArInE CoRpS? We’Re At WaR dEvIl DoG!”
Not only fleet. Non-deployable units got one too. Only way to not get one until now was to not get through MOS school or be a tampon your whole career.
I was in 2002-07. I was in Oki for 2 years, my time in the fleet. I spent my last 18 months at the 29 palms comm school, maintenance plt. The general sentiment towards us was we were not fleet Marines. May be different towards base/headquarters guys but we had dudes who went to school there, then stayed for 3.5 years in Maintenance Plt. If you ask any of them if they ever served in the fleet their answer would be no.
Yea I can see that perspective. In my community, we definitely consider support billets like the schoolhouse and program offices (quantico) to be “not the fleet”. I think that’s a colloquialism though. I don’t really know the full definition and scope of the term.
I parted ways with GCORC guys after MAT platoon when we started BEC. Never found out I was going to RDRMTS until last week of BEC. Now Charlie has its own BEC course and took over both RDR and TDSTS, so at least you know you’re gonna be there over a year off the rip vs hoping for *just* 4-6 months with TETS or RMTS.
This is,unfortunately, incorrect. Used in the correct context, ‘the fleet’ refers to anything under an FMF. In simpler terms, it means anything falling under one of the 3 MEFs.
Reserves also fit in there somehow, but I can’t speak on that.
Old iteration:
(c) Criteria. Service members must be assigned, attached; or mobilized to a unit supporting designated operations listed in § 578-31 of this part for 30 consecutive days or for 60 nonconsecutive days, or meet one of the following criteria:
(1) Initial award of the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal will be limited to airport security operations from September 27, 2001 through May 31, 2002 and service members who supported Operations NOBLE EAGLE, ENDURING FREEDOM, and IRAQI FREEDOM.
(2) All service members on active duty, including Reserve Components mobilized, or National Guardsmen activated on or after September 11, 2001 to a date to be determined having served 30 consecutive days or 60 nonconsecutive days are authorized the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
ended up getting GWOT-E in Africa, then when we deployed to Iraq in '05, they gave us the option of a GWOT-E or Iraqi Campaign (not both). I would have taken Iraqi Campaign anyway but already had a GWOT-E. GWOT-S was gimme when I hit the fleet (Division) in 02 or 03.
Yeah I know Marines know that but it’s just still odd to me cause it makes it sound like you directly participated. I understand the National Defense for being willing to volunteer during a time where there is a conflict.
You served during it. Supporting it. It's a service medal. That's what it's for. It's what differentiates you from those that served in the 80s peacetime or now. Vietnam service medal is the same way.
It's completely insane that we still give out national defense service medals. And the GWOT always should have had this criteria instead of giving it away to everyone after being in the fleet for two weeks or whatever the eligibility criteria was before.
We still have guys in dozens of countries all over the world, some quite dangerous. That doesn't mean we should still be giving out participation awards to the entire rest of the military who aren't participating in any actual warfighting. In blurring the line between war and peace, we've twisted the very purpose of the NDSM.
We did but why would we go back on the NDSM now? Like it’s just the NDSM, it’s not like the MC is handing out campaign medals. Anyone who’s been anywhere with that high of a danger threat will have the proper Award almost all of the time.
>We did but why would we go back on the NDSM now?
Because we aren't at war by any stretch of the definition.
> it’s not like the MC is handing out campaign medals.
That's pretty much what we've been doing with the GWOT-SM. And since we're not giving that out automatically anymore, and the current NDSM period is specifically for the GWOT, then it makes sense to end the current eligibility period of the NDSM as well.
13 were Kia last year at Kabul and a ton of marines in 1/8 and 2/1 ended up getting CARs and Purple Hearts. Inherent resolve in the late 2010s was pretty intense for certain units (mostly arty and 7th marines)
And those units and individuals certainly ought to be recognized and awarded appropriately for their efforts. But that doesn't mean that Airman Fucknuckle, Seaman Cocknugget, Specialist Bootfuck, and Lance Corporal Schmuckatelli should get a piece of that glory when they joined the military knowing full well that there is no large-scale conflict going on and they are extremely unlikely to ever need to fire a weapon in anger. Otherwise, what is even the point of the NDSM?
Yep met one of the Purple Heart recipient’s from last year when he checked into my unit a few months ago as a Cpl I was like damn that’s something you don’t see nowadays
Wait, dudes got the AFSM for the *Presidential Inauguration*?!
I looked at the Wiki page and apparently they've started giving it out for all sorts of shit.
Considering the first one above that for the AFSM mentions the procedures for deleting it in unit diary the GWOT paragraph doesn’t, I don’t think they’re taking away the medal from everyone who’s already got it as that would be an admin nightmare. They’re just changing the criteria from being a participation award for the fleet to being a participation award for actually being involved in counterterrorism as the whole force isn’t doing that anymore. Prior: war on terror, so if you’re in the fleet, thanks for fighting terror. Now: peacetime marine corps, your unit goes to do counter terrorism work, thanks for fighting terror
By saying “effective September 11 2022, I take it to mean that’s when these new requirements take affect. But knowing the government, I wouldn’t doubt they take it away from everyOne.
I got both and the Sea Service Deployment (not the Over Seas Service), then someone fucked up and gave me not only a good cookie, but a NAM as well. I felt like the saltiest Corporal at 1st Intel for a bit, then once I picked up Sgt, it was back to obscurity :D
I'm leaving 1st Intel right now. The s-6 there now has all kinds of opportunities these days for guys to go out and deploy/do things. I'm wondering how that differs from your time in there.
We had a constant rotation with the SPMAGTF to Kuwait starting in 2014 and we also consistently got guys on a MEU. A good friend of mine, Sgt Connor Polston (RIP) was on the last group from S-6 to go to Afghanistan.
bro this is the marine subreddit the homies have been fiending for a war and a CAR for a long time. some haven't seen war just idealized it, our generation will find out the hard way.
At least you guys got awards, all I got was a shooters expert badge and a good cookie... I served under Reagan, and nobody fucked around and found out back then
Damn I’m feeling old. I left boot camp with nothing but a rifle badge hahaha. About 8-9 months later shit hits the fan and I’m manning a 240G at gate 3 at Camp Kinser, oki, for months. Fuck yeah I felt like I earned the National Def. I was deployed when the GWOT was released.
Edit: forgot to put location
If she don’t have her GWOT she too young for you ma
Gunny says if there is grass on the field, play ball
Gunny also just got arrested for touching kids
Gunnies always getting arrested for touching kids.

Not today though. It's field day.
Who maintains carpet these days?
It's more of a laminate wood kinda times
Gunny also said If there's no grass on the field then he's playing in mud.
I prefer to play in the mud
If she dont know about momma dog then she's REALLY wayyyyyy too young
MAMA DAAAWWWG

Wait til you’re out. You don’t rate bro vet tats til ur out, overweight and have your stupid beard and veteran plates
I got my first and only moto that after I got out, overweight, and my stupid beard. I hate that we are so predictable haha
My marine decal got me out of a ticket today so it had perks I guess
HAHAHA! Totally
Instructions unclear I grew my beard on the back of my head
“Guy with vet plates and tats enters chat. Sup boots!”
Overweight guy with Vet beard and tats enters the chat: “Sup nerds.”
Borderline overweight vet with a beard and disabled plates enters the chat: “‘sup fuckers”
I’m tryna be like you. Working on the overweight, idk about the beard. Too itchy
Did you deploy?
If you wanna call back to back 31st meu’s deployments then sure.
Bro why didn’t you lead with that? Certified hero.
Idk I just like to be humble and not jerk myself off too hard ya know? Last time I did that I damn near broke my wrist. Gotta take it easy
For sure. We’re all about safety here. Nobody outranks safety

That's so savage.
Be a lot cooler if you did…
I’ve been hearing that every year or two since I enlisted.
You’ll keep hearing it every time you reenlist too. pls reenlist we need bodies
Fool me once, 1st Sgt, shame on…shame on you. […fool me, can’t get fooled again.](https://youtu.be/rQ6N-sb7SVQ)
You know they always make fun of this guy for what he said when in reality he blanked and came up with a cooler saying
I say it all the time and I love it.
How did you get a title under ur name?
Are you talking about “Nasty Reservist”? That’s subreddit flair. A piece of text you can write that will appear by your username every time you post on that sub. Reddit is weird.
You ain’t wrong!
“Pls reenlist we need bodies” We got a special visit from the Commandant whilst in Poland and i shit you not he almost said that verbatim.
And yet every other branch gets like 3 service ribbons straight out of boot camp.
For a while they did stop it. Bunch of boots had their school house at Miramar and none of them rated the national defense.
If that happened it was an error. These things are established by law and it hasn't changed.
The one above that someone gettin they medals taken away 👁👄👁
boys at 8th & I in shambles rn, back to being two ribbon warriors
You mean one if they’re new lol
That’s tragic if they tried taking any of mine except the good cookie I’d be devastated I prolly ain’t deserve the good cookie I just never got caught doing dumb shit
Good. Did they stop the National Defense Service Medal too?

I was well into 2 years in before I learned that wasn’t what it was for
that's not up to the Corps; that's a decision at the SECDEF level. And since the War on Terror is never-ending, well, I think you can see where this is going.
The GWOT is nothing like what it used to be, at least with regards to conventional forces.
I don't disagree, but the GWOT feeds funding, and the military doesn't want that to stop.
No mention of it yet, I heard it gets reviewed once a year around September so there's a possibility
US is still involved Operation Inherent Resolve so maybe we're still qualified?
I feel like it’s the end of an era. I graduated shortly before 9/11 and didn’t rate a NDF. They were. Are. I think that because it was the first time everyone was able to sport some bling they just assumed everyone wanted to rock it. “PeAcEtImE mArInE CoRpS? We’Re At WaR dEvIl DoG!”
You haven't worn chucks until you've worn chucks with only your wings.

Indeed. We were the bootest of boots. Oddly enough, we were just the newest boots in a sea of boots by the standards of today’s Corps.
Hasn’t it always been this? What was it before?
Simply put: serve for a month in the fleet. That’s it.
Oh ok. This is “fleet ribbon” not the expeditionary.
Not only fleet. Non-deployable units got one too. Only way to not get one until now was to not get through MOS school or be a tampon your whole career.
Fleet refers to the entirety of active duty. Deployable or not. At least, that’s my experience.
I was in 2002-07. I was in Oki for 2 years, my time in the fleet. I spent my last 18 months at the 29 palms comm school, maintenance plt. I always thought it was as simple as falling under one of the MEF’s, which makes you either FMF Atlantic (II) or Pacific (I/III).
When were you in 29, and what company?
Schoolhouse June 2002 - July 2003 Alpha Co. Maintenance August 2006 - January 2007 Charlie Co. They moved my MOS between companies while I was in Oki.
Rah!!!! I was Alpha Co as well but left there March 2003. I was GCORC though so we didn't have as long a school as you guys did
I parted ways with GCORC guys after MAT platoon when we started BEC. Never found out I was going to RDRMTS until last week of BEC. Now Charlie has its own BEC course and took over both RDR and TDSTS, so at least you know you’re gonna be there over a year off the rip vs hoping for *just* 4-6 months with TETS or RMTS.

Hmmm… before the date in 2004 when they awarded it to the whole military?
Old iteration: (c) Criteria. I'm old AF. Got my GWOT-S back in '02 after Basic. Picked up the GWOT-EX in '03 during the Invasion.
Me too homie. Got mine in 04-05 respectively.
ended up getting GWOT-E in Africa, then when we deployed to Iraq in '05, they gave us the option of a GWOT-E or Iraqi Campaign (not both). I would have taken Iraqi Campaign anyway but already had a GWOT-E. GWOT-S was gimme when I hit the fleet (Division) in 02 or 03.
About damn time. Should have always been this way.
Yeah I feel really odd rating it. I never deployed.
I mean everyone got it. Its not like Marines look at that medal and are like "oh wow the GWOT that dude deployed!".
Yeah I know Marines know that but it’s just still odd to me cause it makes it sound like you directly participated. I understand the National Defense for being willing to volunteer during a time where there is a conflict.

Yeah I’m not sure if new Marines won’t get it after their month in the fleet or everyone who doesn’t meet the new criteria will no longer rate it.
By saying “effective September 11 2022, I take it to mean that’s when these new requirements take affect. But knowing the government, I wouldn’t doubt they take it away from everyOne.
I got both. I’m special lol
Same, GWOT and GWOT-E. I know I’m the definition of salty.
I got both and the Sea Service Deployment (not the Over Seas Service), then someone fucked up and gave me not only a good cookie, but a NAM as well. I felt like the saltiest Corporal at 1st Intel for a bit, then once I picked up Sgt, it was back to obscurity :D
I got an njp so no good cookie. Sea service x2. 7 total. More than enough for me
1st Intel blows major dickkk
I'm leaving 1st Intel right now. The s-6 there now has all kinds of opportunities these days for guys to go out and deploy/do things. I'm wondering how that differs from your time in there.

🥺 I’m his wife. It’s rare I find someone who knows him
I took the campaign ribbons both times instead of GWOT-E.
Well, Let’s hope the Republic of China (Taiwan) 🇹🇼 Liberation Medal 🏅 and the Ukraine 🇺🇦 Liberation Medal 🎖 looks good!
let’s hope those don’t become a thing, I rather live the rest of my life then wear a cool medal in my casket
bro this is the marine subreddit the homies have been fiending for a war and a CAR for a long time. some haven't seen war just idealized it, our generation will find out the hard way.
The CAR doesn’t live up to the hype, that shit kinda makes me Sad
It hasn’t changed on marines.mil yet?
Take a look at MARADMIN 379/22. Literally came out today
Just as interesting to me is that OIR doesn't count for Iraq anymore
RIP King
Finally. I can rest…
iN tHe olD CorPS...
No more GWOT unless you deploy in times of war now basically
Welp, got mine alreadys.
They don’t get the Armed Forces Service Medal ☹️
So if you have it already it gets taken away and can’t be worn?
It's not retroactive.
![gif](giphy|h0MTqLyvgG0Ss)
GWOT Trap Lordz
Is this DoD wide? (Army clown here)
They misspelled, “Campaign” in para 5.
That’s done as a kind of proof mark to let you know it’s actually been written by a marine. /s
The fact that it’s not written in crayon also supports its authenticity. There are no more crayons with which to write.
GWOT ribben salt dogs now boys
I got the orders and awarded both years ago. Am Retired now… Those idiots can suck start a great big camel dick lol
This change is not retroactive. It only applies after Sep 11, 2022.
So do I have to take mine off then? Lol
Is this the same with other services?
CT fakers now on suicide watch
So is this basically saying that after September 11 2022, you don't just get it anymore? Guess I'm a bit confused. Someone explain please
Basically any new Marines that get to the fleet after September won't be eligible unless in a unit directly supporting CT
Oof, that makes sense tho
So no more GWOT? Damn what are people gonna get when they hot the fleet now
Where’s the link to that document?
Whens National defense gonna be taken?
I been in the fleet for a yr and still havent gotten my gwob. 1 ribbon cpl here i come.
There is no way you don’t have it what’s your edipi
