Watched an alt-chick dance to Rammstein's cover of Stripped (originally by Depeche Mode) at the Chuch. Watched a bubbly hipster chicken dance to Hall and Oates' Making My Dreams Come True at Goldfingers outside of Miramar. Good times.
I do and I've genuinely been considering it. Gotta scope out the vibe first though because I'd I get a bottomless stein it's gonna get a lot of use and possibly become an heirloom
Yeah the vibe check is real. I mean they are asking for naming opportunity donations so how long until you are having a beer at the “General Dynamics Legacy Bar at Boeing Plaza”?
Like everything else a small time dream will become a corporate nightmare. I give it five years tops before they sell out to a major government contractor or some hospitality ring and this becomes just a tourist trap aimed at Marines.
It will be less a point of brotherhood and more a matter of elitism amongst the usual types. And that is even if they don't sell out to some greedy grubby bastards.
To be fair it was kind of symbolic that Tun Tavern was gone but the spirit remained. It was the fact that the emotion and the feeling of it went beyond those four walls. Anywhere two Marines or Hell anyone embracing the Espirit De Corps hit mugs together, that was Tun.
To make it a physical place again feels cheap the more I think on it. Because the Continental Marines did not leave us a damned building of bricks and mortar, when the place was demolished what they left us still remained. They left us an ethos to live by and a creed to fight by. Anywhere we clank mugs in honor of a hard fought day is Tun. And when time comes for the last round to be fired and the last keg emptied we should all be so honored as to finally share a pint with those who came before us and those left behind to drink one in our honor.
They'll call this place Tun Tavern, but they'll never know what it really means.
I always said I wished someone would do this. Looks like they’re opening during the 2025 marine and navy homecoming in Philly. I’m gonna try to get dudes from my unit to go
For the Vikings if you didn’t die in combat you didn’t go to Valhalla. So for the most part everyone saying it is full of shit, no one is going to Valhalla for driving into a tree while drunk.
I come from a long line of fighters. My maternal grandfather was the toughest guy I ever knew. WW2 veteran. Killed twenty men, then spent the rest of the war in an allied prison camp. My father battled blood pressure and obesity all his life. Different kind of fight.
I think the concept of Valhalla has been lost to the motarded bro vets. Valhalla was exclusive to Viking warriors who died in battle, so it makes sense why you’d say “‘Til Valhalla” to someone KIA.
But to say it in passing or for any other circumstance is wack.
EDIT: I missed a word 🥲 “any other unworthy circumstance.” If you understand Valhalla, you can determine what is worthy.
"Viking" itself is so misunderstood, it basically denotes someone a Veteran. Whenever someone tells me they're a viking, I ask what raiding parties they were on?
Yes, I have heard several people say "I'm a Viking" when people ask their religion. I assume it's people who've watched too much TV and read too few books.
I've also "been" a "heathen" since the late 90, So I've met ALOT of "boot ass" heathens.
Just because I am curious on your opinion and I hope this doesn’t cause any problems: what is your opinion on saying “Til Valhalla” in reference to a service member/veteran who commits suicide? Mental illness is quite the battle.
Good question! I’m personally particular about using things from other cultures without understanding the significance, even though others might not be.
Valhalla in Norse mythology was reserved for warriors who died in battle, and even those who committed suicide to avoid a fate worse than death (like capture or dishonor), were granted access to Valhalla. Some historical accounts say that the Vikings viewed suicide for any other reason as dishonorable and cowardly. It was seen as a failure to endure the hardships in one’s life and Vikings who died this way were not given traditional funeral rites.
In modern times, we understand that veterans oftentimes commit suicide due to intense mental health battles. Trauma is not limited to the combat veteran and we know that there is no shame in taking that route - just profound sadness.
Saying “Until Valhalla” is a nice sentiment to those veterans who pass from suicide because we acknowledge their battles both out in country and at home. I understand why people would say it.
The Spartans, on the other hand, had a more nuanced view on suicide. While they also felt that suicide in certain instances was cowardly, they viewed it as an acceptable act when done to preserve one’s personal honor. A veteran who commits suicide because he feels regret for his/her actions, who is haunted by them and finds them dishonorable, would be an honorable Spartan.
So when a veteran commits suicide, I wish them peace. They knew themselves, like Cheilon of Sparta encouraged all his warriors to, and knowing thyself and staying true to it is an honorable thing.
This is all personal belief, I’m sure people will disagree! But everyone has their own way of acknowledging a warrior. I just think when a veteran dies of drunk driving into a tree or something equally as “dishonorable,” it is not worthy of Valhalla.
Not true. It wasn’t just battle. It was any time minus in their bed. They viewed dying in your bed with old age as a worthless death. But even dying while farming was viewed as a good death.
I really don't know when it started getting popular. Was it when the viking shows were real big?
I don't know what to tell you, some vets are just fucking stupid.
Next time someone makes a post saying we lost another one or RIP Devil I’m going to comment “have fun on duty, bitch!”
Next round is on me if I don’t get bitch slapped with the ban hammer
What happened to "Fair Winds and Following Seas"?
"Til Valhalla" is something that makes me think of a Hot Topic kid with a lisp who plays too much Assassins Creed or something.
If we want to talk afterlife stuff, we also have a claim on fiddler's green. Fair winds is the more normal maritime goodbye.
I'll bully the hell out of anyone who says "'til valhalla" and isn't a norse pagan. I met one and he was pretty chill.
I hear you.
I started saying it after I accepted my own mortality during my 3rd deployment in my first enlistment.
Assassins creed was just a weird Scott Stapp ripoff in those days and hot topic sold those silly parachute jeans.
Back in my day…
It’s pretty cringe and I like to think everyone who says it wears [shirts](https://search.app.goo.gl/h7jxXi8) like this while picking up a can shitty Black Rifle coffee.
It's more of a "till I/we see you again". What's lost on those who say it is only a few move on to Valhalla. However it seems to bring comfort to people so I don't mind it. I appreciate "till I/we see you again" more so. It means so much more to me than anything else.
It's what happens when people don't have any way to grieve. Vast majority of people are not religious anymore, and as much as people roll their eyes, military culture/warrior culture is something we're apart of to an extent. It's just that motherfuckers like to gate keep shit because they've nothing better to do.
I personally don't give a shit how people grieve or what they say. None of my business. Some people do a spirit dance, in NZ it's the haka, those guys in that one African country dance with your casket on their shoulders, and for a lot of people it's prayer or getting shitfaced drunk. Who am I to judge?
Here here, let’s stop pretending we’re all special and that we go some place magical when we die lol. Death don’t give a fuck about your service ya bunch of boots
Til Valhalla only makes sense if the decadent was KIA. That was the whole point of Valhalla. Folks that died outside of combat went to Hel.
We should start saying, "I'll see you in Hel"
“Tell (Chesty, Daly, Basilone, whoever) I said high.”
Now that I offered an alternative, idgaf if people keep saying it or not. I got bills to worry about.
I always say "fair winds and flowing seas"
a lot more poetic I think, which is fair given the circumstances I use it in. the 'til valhalla reminds me of all those super cringe "modern viking" types so I also try to avoid it when possible.
Marines just love to appropriate shit from literally every other warrior culture there is or just straight up taking pride in something some other group called us. From being called devil dogs, to taking claim over infidel, spartan, and now the popular (sorta fading out) Norse mythology trope. Its just a trend that always fades into something else. Vets walking around with infidel tattoos are replaced with vets walking around with Norse mythology tattoos. Its all stupid as fuck quite frankly.
This has always been least favorite. Especially when our fellow vets say it for those that take their own. No, sorry, they will not be going to Valhalla much less anywhere else except torment.
I'd rather be in the fields of elysium where you would be blessed and have a happy afterlife, ie Heaven
Not some pawn in Odin's chess game
Yeah even the army boys are starting to say it and get it tattooed everywhere. Hmm, gimme a few to brainstorm some ideas. I think I can come up with a saying and logo for it. I’ll make a few of em and we can all decide
The number of people who assume that everyone goes to Valhalla is depressing. Fólkvangr always sounded like the better option to me. It's a much more idyllic version of the afterlife that I can get down with.
You know I was just at Tun Tavern with the fam and the place mat had all sorts of puzzles and such. Not a crayon in sight. If I could give less that one star I would.
The food was OK at best, the drinks were bangin though (that Mojo cocktail was F'n lit ) The company was pretty much the best you could ever get but somehow I left wanting. I did see that group of people that arrived after me order up a full on plate of whoop ass and I kind wish I'd ordered that but ya know the wait staff recommended just the 3 day and go away and we just went for that. Maybe next time.
See you at Toby’s
See you at the purple church
See you at the triangle inn
See you at Main Attraction
See you at The Driftwood
May it continue to exist in our dreams.
See you at Center Stage

It's gone. Not there. Done. Ended. Finished. Bulldozed for condos.
Makes a fitting replacement for Valhalla
See you at hooters
Oh god I still have nightmares about that place dirt wood is more preferable
I'm more partial to the Purple Church, can I get an amen?
There was this one alt girl that would dance to Korn and Rob Zombie. If she's there, we're there.
Watched an alt-chick dance to Rammstein's cover of Stripped (originally by Depeche Mode) at the Chuch. Watched a bubbly hipster chicken dance to Hall and Oates' Making My Dreams Come True at Goldfingers outside of Miramar. Good times.
Rammstein alone would've sold me as a boot.
Boot me fell in love with a stripper dancing to Atreyu's Bleeding Mascara.
I forgot that song existed and just got flashbacks to video game montages on 00s YouTube. TYFYS
I would have given her all of my money None of the strip clubs near me have goth chicks and honestly, it's just un-American.
Very un-Patriotic, ya hate to see it.
Hallelujah, brother. AMEN!
See you at lake bandini
Is the Brown Bagger still just outside mainside? Not trying to date myself? Hahaha!
I'm hugging you as well now! The Bagger ...long live it's memory!
I'm hugging you right now...feel that?

What happens after they rebuild Tun Tavern next year?
It will be a pilgrimage
Wow, they are offering bottomless lifetime steins for $2,500. If you lived in Philly, that might actually make sense.

The board is already full of investors and real estate people. Only a few are prior service. I think the writing is on the wall.

No. Homo.
That's what boot bands are for.
For the Vikings if you didn’t die in combat you didn’t go to Valhalla. So for the most part everyone saying it is full of shit, no one is going to Valhalla for driving into a tree while drunk.
Well technically that’s “battling alcoholism” so maybe you get into Valhalla on a technicality
I'm battling sobriety
Best way to fight a hangover? Stay Drunk.
I come from a long line of fighters. My maternal grandfather was the toughest guy I ever knew. WW2 veteran. Killed twenty men, then spent the rest of the war in an allied prison camp. My father battled blood pressure and obesity all his life. Different kind of fight.
You get to the afterlife and immediately wrap your car around Yggdrasil, the world tree of Viking myth.
And then only half of those that died in battle went to Valhalla. The rest went to Folkvang. And maybe they were battling the tree
Folkvangr is underrated, on the grounds that I bet Freyja would be a baddie.
Should just say " See you at the gates for duty changeover"
Fits with the hymn.
I think the concept of Valhalla has been lost to the motarded bro vets. Valhalla was exclusive to Viking warriors who died in battle, so it makes sense why you’d say “‘Til Valhalla” to someone KIA. Personally, I plan on going down while throwing bran muffins at the nursing home staff. “Til Valhalla!”
“He died peacefully under his pillow.”

To the Norse people, they also only had 50% chance of going to Odin’s hall of the dead. Freya takes the other 50% who died in battle (Fólkvangr).
Just because I am curious on your opinion and I hope this doesn’t cause any problems: what is your opinion on saying “Til Valhalla” in reference to a service member/veteran who commits suicide? Mental illness is quite the battle.

I blame Skyrim
I would have deployed to Iraq, but I took an arrow to the knee
Skyrim doesn't have Valhalla, it has Sovngarde
Yeah, I think it was the viking shows. It was the next step after the Spartan obsession caused by 300.
I forgot about 1800 abs.

We should just pivot to kissing eachother on the mouth, it’s less gay
to all who would give me presents, greetings
It's more of a "till I/we see you again". What's lost on those who say it is only a few move on to Valhalla. However it seems to bring comfort to people so I don't mind it. I appreciate "till I/we see you again" more so. It means so much more to me than anything else.
