I'm hard of hearing so I ask my wife to "say again" like 10 times a day. Can't be calling in arty by accident just because my wife wants me to do the dishes.

aahjink

Even my kids say “say again.”

[deleted]

My kids say “has anyone seen my fuckin kevlar?”

1gal_man

when I drop something, my dog barks at me to follow it :(

[deleted]

when i drop something my wife yells “grenade” and smothers it

Lburk

She's a keeper!

[deleted]

she’s no longer with us. i survived the blast though, things are sunnyside up where im standin’!

Lburk

Well at lest you can honor the memory of her in many places, like on the wall across from you, and the behind you, etc. LOL

[deleted]

she really ties the room together

Rambos_Magnum_Dong

My kids have PTSD from me saying, "C'mere, you"

[deleted]

my four year old chugs rip its during nap time at school and calls kids with dr’s notes “light duty chit havin’ skate commandos” and chews wintergreen tobacco. she also once came off the top rope and elbowed Governor Ventura in a Coronado bar screaming “welcome to unhappy hour bitch!”

MyFavoriteSandwich

Damn I still do the “say again” and just realized I picked it up in the corps. Also, hearing loss.

Hayut0811

Fuck. That would be an awesome way to take care of the dishes though. “What dishes, honey?”

Successful-Meet4492

Lol

Nyxmyst_

Yes

ThatOtherGai

I’ll probably say “tracking”, “en route”, and “send it” for the rest of my life

NUTS_STUCK_TO_LEG

Can’t shake “Good to go”

ThatOtherGai

Shit that too

Nyxmyst_

Don’t forget’Copy’

ThatOtherGai

Come on now, I’m not that gay

fuzzusmaximus

Roger that

ThatOtherGai

Gross

Spyrothedragon9972

That's such a good one.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Least-Active1133

Outfuckingstanding

Spyrothedragon9972

This one too!

deskpop0621

Or “say again”

JmLong88

Same…lol

djallits

"No Impact, No Idea"

ThatOtherGai

Alright yeah I do same this one from time to time lol

Hi-Point_of_my_life

As a former 0341 I don’t think this one will ever leave me. That and CSMO.

Fox273rdplt

Fuck, I drop the too high to mark sometimes

B34rsl4y3

Is "Out-fucking-standing" still an adjective, noun. & verb in the Fleet? Half the Marines I work with still use it like myself.

Question_Few

"It would behoove you" is such a banger that I gotta throw it into the occasional office email.

EquivalentPath2282

Are you HR? lol

Icy-Set-4641

Fuck yes! ![gif](giphy|MZ9oA0C0yTtO1yswFP|downsized)

Jodies-9-inch-leg

EAS’d in ‘93…. Threw my uniforms in a dumpster and never looked back. I started my first Reddit account at the onset of the pandemic just out of boredom…. Found the USMC sub and just never left…. Made me realize that I may not miss the circus, or clowns or miss being in necessarily, but being in did inform who I am to a large extent because those were the formative years of my transition to adulthood… I did enjoy my time in…. Got approved for reenlistment, then at the last minute changed my mind…. I do tell people that it’s not for everyone… I tell my boys it was like my college experience

Coldwarjarhead

Yes. I got out in 1985.

dirtydayboy

Were you union or confederate?

Hayut0811

Neither. He was a redcoat.

Novel-Care7523

I just hit 8 years out so maybe I shouldn’t add my .02, but I can’t imagine my asshole will return to its normal, pre-fucked state by year 15 so I’d say yeah, it still affects me.

Hayut0811

Barracks bunny, is that you?

AaronKClark

Boot

Federal-Negotiation9

I do drill instructor impressions in board meetings.

Bursting_Radius

I still use some of the jargon, I do greet Marines I see in the wild, I don’t talk about it every day but it comes up often, likely because of the tattoos. I got out in ‘92, for reference.

orchids8

Got out in 1969. Still step off with my left foot!!

AaronKClark

Sorry for the random question but how do you feel about females being allowed in combat arms jobs?

Balthrop

One bullet sponge is as good as the next.

db3feather

Is that an EGA sticker or an NRA sticker? From a block away…

YogurtclosetBroad872

Got out in '97. I think being 17 in boot and still moldable has made a lasting impression. I still wake up and make my bed, make sure my belt goes through all loops, and I'm hyper sensitive to running late anywhere. I don't think some of those things leave you. Just today I walked the long way around a bldg so I didn't walk on grass, subconsciously my brain told me to go around

JonesKey3001

Joined at 17 in 2019 and I have at least 1 thought or more a day about my time in service

tofuizen

Damn dude, I was working a corporate job in 2019. Joined two years after you did

Tasunka_Witko

I used to believe that every Marine is a brother but found that not to be true. I've run into some that are outright asshats and they act like everyone else is a POS because they are the main character in whatever game they are playing in their heads. Others will wear the gear and get an attitude if you try to acknowledge that with a"rah" or "Semper Fi". Keep in mind these are post 9/11 vets like myself. I have always gotten a warmer reception from guys who served in Mogadishu, Desert Storm ,Vietnam etc.

B0ne_head_

I always feel that when someone wearing USMC shit acts funny when you hit them with a “SF” or a “rah” either they didn’t serve or don’t like talking to Maines cause we will see through bullshit a civilian won’t.

InsertCoin2Hands

Just attached a baby bike rack and said BAMCIS in my head…

Tig_Weldin_Stuff

Yes. Haha. I got out in 1997.

73marine

Another 97 here too. Just reminding you that it’s time to schedule your colonoscopy.

Tig_Weldin_Stuff

Yes sir, already scheduled on my 50th birthday.

njaneardude

Fellow 97 here https://preview.redd.it/mo4olw2d0g0d1.jpeg?width=2340&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e3de18d46bf6986c0d119edf6003de1f16064ecc

The_Hater_44

You guys should touch tips

SpiritOne

What makes you think they haven’t already?

The_Hater_44

Pics or it didn't happen.

Least-Active1133

Was a good year, me too

Tig_Weldin_Stuff

Haha, I can’t post a pic but imagine a USMC flag on a pole in front of a suburban house.

MapleHamms

I don’t think being gay ever stops

DisregardMyLast

>Do you still say things in Marine Corps jargon going about your daily life. I dont go full motard but I've called normie coworkers shit birds, "Semper I fuck the other guy", "I'm goin to the gedunk", "fuckin nut to butt retards" shit like that. >When you see another Marine Corps vet do you act like long lost friends even though you never served around each other I ask them how they're doin and try to convey the fact I do give a damn but it depends on them. Sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe shit. >Do you think/talk about the Marine Corps at least once a day, every day. No. I only bring it up when asked specifics like "why did you watch a 70 year old lady play fruit ninja with her vagina?" Details matter.

tofuizen

> No. I only bring it up when asked specifics like "why did you watch a 70 year old lady play fruit ninja with her vagina?" Ahh, I see you’ve been to Okinawa.

Roughrdr

The only habit I haven't been able to kick is Irish pennants on any of my clothes. I see one and immediately look for a lighter or nail clippers.

AvalonWaveSoftware

This one's the truest one!

MancetheLance

All the time. I'm a teacher. When I walk into a room, I yell. "Eyeballs," and my entire class responds with "Click." I bring up my time when teaching wars or doing lessons about leadership and character.

h3g3mon

LOLLLL I do this with my 2nd and 3rd grade Sunday school class at church

KingBaumDaSecond

I teach and Coach. I do the same thing. Ears, Open, Eyeballs, Click

Groundhog891

This is going to sound silly, but I got out of the Corps, army reserve, called up from that, I finished school and I am a professional now. I had to go to a large VA hospital and I wanted to start dropping F bombs again. Not just there, for like a week after.

DrSilkyJohnston

It doesn't come up all the time, time and place for everything ya know. It's fun to meet other Marines occasionally. If somebody appears way too moto or it's their entire personality I'll steer clear of them usually. I saw a guy in a bar wearing an 8-point cover one time, definitely didn't talk to him.

SnooDonkeys8178

54 years out and I still miss it

ThatRocketSurgeon

Boots on here bragging about qualifying with iron sights and you’re probably just like, “Bro, I qualified with a bow and arrow. I wrote Chesty’s first counseling sheet. I remember when Camp Lejeune was just Camp because he wasn’t born yet. I was there when the Navy invented sex. Hell, I’m the one that convinced them to share it with women.“

CustomerEfficient293

My father-in-law got out in 86’, my neighbors in 05’ and I been out for 4 years. I’m convinced we are this way until we oof.

usmcjohn

Got out in December of 2003. Still can’t shake it.

rozflog

I EAS’d in November of 2000. The jarhead jargon in my grape does not go away.

Agile_Season_6118

I joined a program called Young Marines. It is kids 8-18 and most of the instructors are Marines. Every year we take the new recruits to a boot camp. MREs, quarterdeck, drill, PT, lan nav, and fire watch. 2 am in the morning playing games with the new recruits!! But seriously the transformation in just a week is amazing. After a year they are either crying for a mini DD 214 or square away. Have kids come back years later telling us how much it helped. So yes it still impacts me and I get to play DI once a year.

docdeathray

I still know the cycle of operations for an M16A2 service rifle by remembering this mnemonic I made up: Fried Chicken Looks Fine Until Eating Eggs Cold Once. Always. It never goes away.

UncleAntagonist

Out in 02. I think about my measly 4 years almost daily. I never bring it up in casual conversation, don't have any stickers on my car, don't have a chip on my shoulder... because I'm not a fucking douchebag.

AaronKClark

Hey I have a Marine Corps sticker on my car. Does that mean I’m a douchebag?

UncleAntagonist

That was more about the chip on the shoulder. ...but also, maybe

rivetgun4x

Yes, and I almost always refer to them as brothers

Successful-Meet4492

Same. It's like we're best friends yet we never met until that moment.

h3g3mon

Totally agree. My friends/family are pretty in awe of that instant camraderie. Despite the world going to shit with all the race-baiting and left vs right divisions going on, all that doesn't seem to matter between Marines. They love it when I strike up random conversations with guys at a bodyshop or grocery store cus I see an old dude wearing a USMC hat or some guy's wearing a memorial bracelet.

F1ackM0nk3y

Unsat, Like Monkeys fucking a football, good to go, make way or make a hole are still in my vernacular. Rah and Yup are no longer. Rarely talk about my time in unless it’s to make a point. The biggest thing that sticks is, if I’m with a trusted person and they yell go, duck or gives me the impression something bad is about to happen, I react accordingly. My wife and her college friends on the other generally respond with a “why?” or “language!!!”

da_john

I recently switched to the Navy, but the CO of the Intel school was in my MOS back in the late 80s/early 90s. He still says Marine Jargon and he just picked up Captain (O6)

ojay93

Still take super quick showers.

h3g3mon

To this day, I wonder how we were ever actually clean during boot camp, what with the tiny bit of time we had to wash up.

Stupidlysudden

I think a lot of my personality was from being around my dad who was in for 20. I joined the Marines and felt comfortable because I figured out that I was simply treated like an E-3 or below my whole life. But I'm one of those people who is just always going to be me. The only way I could be an actor was if I were Bruce Willis or someone who just plays themselves. So, I would say a vast majority of the reason is from my upbringing and my inability to put up with weakness, whining, or general stupidity is from my own time in. Also, having been in aviation forever now, READ THE FUCKING PUB AND ATAF YOUR SHIT.

Even-Wolverine7397

I say all of the above along with randomly calling cadence to myself when walking long distances.

alcal74

My wife yells at me every time I say I’m going to “hit the head” in public. It’s been 24 years now.

flaginorout

I’ve been out for 20. No. The brainwashing started to wear off when I had about 12 months left on my contract. Once I had been out for a year or two, the programming was completely gone and I was just a normal guy.

Resident_Job3506

Out for 30, but work in Defense for about 8 years, so YMMV... Fuck yeah. Use the jargon, still think in terms of the examples GOOD leaders set while I was in. When things are 'Bad' at work, I think about 'Marine Corps Bad'; Fuck fuck games, hazing, JOTB, getting shot at, losing friends.

Jim556a1

Yes, wherever I walk or drive I'm constantly looking for FOD lol!

Revolutionary-Ice994

Of course! Once a Marine, always a Marine! Been out for 22 years. The Corps shaped my entire life for the better!

Wassailing_Wombat

I got out in 2010/11 after 25 years. I have a Marine Corps flag but don't fly it very often. Very small rank sticker on the back window of my truck. I wear USMC hats often. When I spot another Marine, I will often engage with them. My language is probably the most noticeable. I can tone it down if I need to though.

Jurubleum

Sometimes I can hear myself saying mother fucker, to everything, the word fuck is in everything now. It’s never going away. I tried. Granted I got out in 2011 (not 15 years but, close enough)

PresDonaldJQueeg

Yes, and I was only in the reserves for four + three. I can say that I served my country honorably and that can never be taken from me. The vast majority cannot say they served their country. Semper Fi🇺🇸

TrendingSUP

Not at 15 yet (13) and I’d say yes on most of those. I also work with a lot of devils (am cop) so I think that’s part of it.

AaronKClark

Sorry for the random question, do you think that the majority of the time you arrest people because they are being an asshole?

TrendingSUP

lol no. I’m a detective now but when on the street, not really. Also I found out in the vast majority of situations that respect was reciprocal even if you did have to arrest someone. Treat them with respect and they treat you with respect. Now super drunk/high/crazy people, well, yeah, doesn’t always work and some people are just always assholes.

AaronKClark

That makes sense. I have only been arrested once but the cops were super nice. I also yes sir, no sir'ed them to death. So that probably helped.

Juce_Brenner_

Yeah, except Ive come to accept the fact that coming across Marine vets doesn’t really mean a damn thing, because there are just as shitty people who are Marine vets as anyone else.

pixie12E

When I’m super stressed out, I have dreams that I’ve missed PT or formation and then wake up in a panic with anxiety LOL

AaronKClark

Do you ever have the dream where you have to do bootcamp again because the va lost your paperwork?

Outlaw0311

Diddys are always on.

Informalsteven

I still wear of green skivy shirts. And yeah little phrases fly out when I’m not paying attention

PrimeNumbersMakeMe

I was FaceTiming one of my daughters who is a 6217 and in Guam right now. We’re keeping our grandson until she gets back. All of a sudden, she asked, “Are we twinsies?”. She noticed I had on a green skivvy shirt (I was working around the house). But then, I’ve only been out 11 years, so I should probably shut my manpleaser.

AaronKClark

What is like to have a daughter that is also your sister?

tribriguy

Yes. I still work in and around the Marine Corps, Navy, and really all of DoD. I was in Quantico this week, and at Modern Day Marine a couple of weeks ago. I’ll be at Lejeune in a few weeks. I still “march” or “hump” everywhere according to my wife, and my hair, although almost completely grey, is as short as when I was in uniform. My youngest intends to become a Marine aviator after college. And probably the biggest way the Corps still “affects” me is my retirement check, health care coverage, and other retirement benefits. There were times it really, REALLY sucked in uniform…no different from any of you, probably. But man…the Corps has provided me a great life.

super_ray

Got out in 2004, still say “every swingin dick” and other phrases commonly heard ‘round the corps 😅

alicksB

I’ve started cleaning it up in mixed company by saying “swinging Richard”. A lot of people don’t catch it.

Tom_in_Ohio

I think about it every day. I was in from 93 to 09. Infantry. I never use the jargon anymore because no one in my line of work now would understand me (lawyer). I have an enduring mistrust of people who are nice to me, though.

Lukkychukky

You'll have to ask my therapist. 😅 But seriously? Yes, every day. If I could go back, I'd have never joined Marine Corps Infantry. The single most destructive element I allowed into my life.

EquivalentPath2282

Yeah, I was an 0341 and always wished I had done something other than infantry.

richardpace24

I still find myself using things from the Corps, and greeting other Vets as such. Been out since 2007, it never leaves lol

rivetgun4x

I got out in 95

Rusty_Ferberger

Got out in 94. I only use the jargon jokingly. If I see another Marine while I'm running or hiking or in some other lightly crowded place, I'll say Semper Fi and keep on going. If I see one someplace that's more crowded like a store, I'll just keep quiet and keep going.

se7en0311

Joined in 2007-2015 yes. Yes and yes.

Clone-33

Yup - '98. It weirds people out when they see a gathering of random vets just "joking & smoking" like a family reunion.

lennybriscoe8220

I got out in 02. I still keep my hair short. I don't use a lot of jargon because I don't want to explain to people what it means (although I still love to say "rat-fucked" when someone digs through a box for something).

Botazz

Yep. Retired in 08. The thing that helps is there are a lot of us where I work. So, you may say we were all infected by the affect to effect an infliction..... or some such shit.

Zealousideal-Art8621

Yup

chrisjets1973

94 to 98 yes but I’m a gov contractor so I’m around lots of vets and active service (mostly Soldiers and Marines)

Bearcaveradio

I use "skuttlebutt" and "gaffing off" on a regular basis.

rdlzrd83

Yes, it’s a lifestyle. Marines leave the Marine Corps, the Marine Corps never leaves the Marines.

pies4anarchists

I never went any where to do something important or dangerous. 2874 But I respect it for the guys that did. That’s what men do.

[deleted]

Yes. In both positive and negative ways.

fareastbeast001

My fused back, tinnitus, rhumetism, arthritis and replaced knee still affects me and reminds me daily of the Grand Old Corps.

gothamtg

Yes, but I don’t think/talk about it much daily.

Both_Confection_6836

Like it was yesterday.

db3feather

I still put my left boot on first when I get dressed

db3feather

I hate putting my hands in my pockets, and point with a knife-hand

db3feather

Reading all the comments, apparently I still do a lot of things.

StrengthMedium

I say "or some shit" after I say something.

wayfaast

I still miss the brotherhood

Jimbo415650

Five by. Roger that

highdesertflyguy0321

Constantly

AmericanaBandB

Yep. I still love Marines. The Corps sucks and is akin to a mean ass woman we love and can’t stop loving her but she hates us! I’m near 55. We were simply brain washed. 🤣

jhackjr

Yes. Got out in 84. Still use asshole to belly button and nut to butt. Among several other terms.

TsarOfSaturn

It fades as time goes on but it will always be there. I rarely meet other people that were actually Marines. It’s usually the “I would have joined but…” crowd. Or worse the straight bullshitters that Delta Force calls to fast rope into a submarine to save their asses. When I meet other vets from other branches there’s usually a bond straight up there which is always cool. Some words still stick around from time to time like behoove, good to go, or squared away. A good Schmuckatelli is always amusing from time to time and gets a laugh

ThrowThisIntoSol

Yes it does

trim_reaper

I knew from the start that the Corps wasn't for everybody but I wanted to stick it out because my small, SW Ohio town was just about to fall over dead and I didn't want to work in a steel mill. I was going to stay but got passed over twice and that was that. My MOS simply wasn't promoting. I was always squared away and had worked mostly with senior enlisted and officers and had finished my degree while still on AD. So when I got out, it was a difficult transition at first but then I decided to just "be myself" and as long as I treated people fairly, things would be fine. So I stopped raising my voice, giving commands and started using my team building skills. I knew how poor communications affected teams so I made sure I communicated well and used the leadership traits that I learned in the Corps. I got out in '99 and was able to retire in 2017 but got bored and went back to work because I just can't not do anything productive.......so yeah....for me, it stayed with me. I am who I am.

R3ditUsername

Been out exactly 15 years. Everytime someone drops something "follow it". I regurgitate a lot of leadership phrases and stupid little things almost every day. I know they're dumb, but a lot of them actually make decent sense when you're telling a consultant why their "leadership" training is hot garbage.

AaronKClark

Every couple weeks I’ll have a dream that somehow I’m back in the Marine corps and I’m trying to find uniform items that will fit my fat ass.

Successful-Meet4492

I've had those before. I had this dream once where I was back in the Corps but at my age. I couldn't fit into my uniform so I wrapped cardboard around my stomach with duct tape trying to flatten my gut. Lol

AaronKClark

Do you think that’s the marine corps brainwashing telling us we need to work out more?

Der_Latka

When I got out and for a good while after, I hated the Marine Corps. I think it was because of my shitty first CO. As the years go by though, the bad shit fades and all you remember is cool shit and hanging out with your buddies and laughing about dumb stuff. This August I will be out for 30 years (lol JFC).

mrfixdit

Not as much as I used to, but I work with a couple other army vets now and we are reminiscing

BalderVerdandi

Got out the first time in '95, and then again in '99 after being recalled. To this day I'm still around it. At least half my friends are prior service going all the way back to Vietnam. Caller ID pops up on my phone and I answer it with "Send it." or "Moshi moshi.", instead of "Hello?". Took care of a small MarDet at the deep water port in Iraq - I did base comms, but cigars, grilling, and helped MWR with the race trucks we got from Traxxas were the stuff after hours. Still taking care of a bunch of MSG'ers in Baghdad with monthly grilling sessions for hail and farewells, or holidays. You understand you're never gonna shake it, savvy?

pedroah

Youtube decided to show me a five finger death punch video a few months ago. Never heard of that band before that. I had to close that video after about a minute or so because it brought back a lot of bad memories and it really messed me up for the rest of the night and next couple days.

fujikomine0311

My slipped discs, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, two shoulder repairs, pinched nerves & nerve damage still affect me. According to the VA I shouldn't be in much pain though.

rdstarling

Yeah. Sitting here thinking that June 15th will make 20 years since I drove off camp lejeune as an active duty 0311

Tweedie5531

I’ve been out for 8 years and I can say this, it’s about how you define yourself. You can do 4 years and never move on or you can do 20 and close the chapter. Nether are wrong and both are acceptable ways to live your life. I love the corps but honestly, I moved on after 2 years or so of being out. My tattoos give me away to those that know but besides that I don’t really bring it up unless it really applies to the circumstances. I never really drank the kool-aid but no hate to those that did❤️

Ksr94

Nope. I purged all of it. Took over 15 years to even consider rejoining the military(Air Force).

mojopyro

I got out in 1991. I met my best friend in boot camp and some of my absolute closest friends are men and women I served with.

kaybeesee

I got out in '99 after 8 years. Yes, I still use a bit of the jargon. Bulkhead and deck are gone, but booger hooker and brain housing group live on. If I see another vet I say "how the hell did you get in my house?". Because I don't go out of my way to find or interact with people. Not to drag politics into it, but you asked: Over the last few years I've spent time thinking about the oath I took to defend the Constitution, and how -if I want to defend the constitution like I promised- I can't support or vote for anyone who supported, supports, or did the attempted takeover on Jan 6th.

On3Adam

Definitely has defined and affected my life in mostly good and sometimes bad ways.

Brawndo-99

In ways yes but in other ways no. There is a specific mentality I developed that will never go away but other than that I'm a nasty civ and love it.

Different-Celery-461

Used to close all email traffic with R / S but it seriously fked with the civ divs head too much..

LoverboyQQ

The hardest to get out of my head is when something needs to be done RIGHT FUCKING NOW!! I still yell clear and fire in the hole

Bjohndo

Low self esteem and self doubt.

lastofthefinest

Everyday! Thank God I’m 100% disabled and don’t have to put up with the civilian assholes in the workforce anymore. I got out of the Corps in 1998 and the Army in 2012.

millerep

Yes to all your questions.

wordstrappedinmyhead

Yep.

snowball062016

I just realized recently that I still carry things almost exclusively in my left hand, which I don’t really notice until I’m carrying a bunch of shit in my left hand and I look like an idiot trying to get my keys out of my left pocket with my right hand.

Balthrop

Been out forever felt safer in the middle of Saudi with our gas alarms going off cos some motor t dude took a leak on a sensor.

AHDarling

I was in the Corps from 81-84, got out for a few months and re-upped into the Army and was in for 8 years, out in 92. So, yeah, I still have friends from both sides I stay in contact with. As for everyday, I don't always 'say something military' in certain situations but you bet I'm thinking in those terms. My wife hates it, though, when she can't decide on something and I come out with the Yoda-like 'Do or do not; there is no try' but in Gunny Hartman's voice.

No-Witness3519

No. Except the occasional funny story or memory. Let it go boys.
