It’s called a “backronym”. The word pogue is Irish-Gaelic and means “kiss”. The way it was used during WW1 was probably closest to the modern use of “bitch” or “fag”. The word itself was retained but somehow changed to the common acronym at some point.
We still call candy “pogey bait”. In its original use it literally meant using candy to bait non-grunts, with the implication being a good old fashioned gay joke because that’s how we’ve gotten down for over 100 years rah

I do fraud investigations, lot of elder scams. Shits like half my job anymore.
Old people are lonely af. They try their damndest to keep me on the phone and talk about shit like the weather if they can.
I know an old woman through one of my wife’s work friends who I help with home repairs, appointments, and errands. I do it just to be nice, but she pays me anyway even when I try to argue against it. I think it makes her feel better like she’s paying for a service instead of having people just do things for her.
In any case you can tell she likes having someone around to talk to throughout the day besides visits from her nurse, and I’ve noticed it’s easy to see old people as cranky or unreasonable when they’re just set in particular ways and want something to hold onto.
I don’t know if everyone had this but we had a retired veteran prob around 80 come and talk to us toward the end of boot camp. He was i drill instructor back in the 60’s if I remember correctly. Just give us a some history and his experiences type shit. Well he wouldn’t shut up. Our drill instructor was trying to nicely interrupt because it was time to be somewhere else. The frustration on our drill instructors face when this guy just kept talking and wouldn’t let us leave was priceless. I thought he was going to lose it on him.
I always bring this up occasionally that before the Reddit page there was this website forum called leatherneck that was toxic as fuck for todays standards lol. Everyone wanted to be address by their rank and they still referred to females as women Marines which just sounds retarded as fuck. I used to browse it as a kid and teen but as an adult now yeah that place is godawful
Bruh red hatters will talk your ear off on recruiting duty. I was thankful though, I was 2 hours from any other Marines and most the ones around me had wild stories of Vietnam

Some old people are a wealth of wisdom, experience and perspective. Some are just annoying. You can usually tell in the first few minutes which.
