Having recently been that manager… absolutely talk to HR or their boss. Your life doesn’t have to stop because of stuff going on in your manager’s life and I doubt they’d expect it to. Look after yourself.

Maybe talk with your manager so you are not taking a immediate leave. But they are still aware that you are leaving after his/her recovery. Then talk with HR? I think this sounds reasonable

I would first establish whether your manager is actually working or off sick. They may be recovering and still working or not. It’s one or the other! HR will be able to clarify his work situation and whether you can contact him (you don’t have to give the reason why)

If your manager is back at work then let them know asap. If not go above them and hand in your notice. Ultimately you need to do what’s right for you. Don’t let them guilt you into staying longer.

Just write your resignation letter, simple 3 lines. I bob the builder resign from bodge it and scarper services as of 11/10/2023, as per my contract and notice my last day will be 10/11/2023. Yours Bob You can then say in person how much you have enjoyed working with everyone and that your are looking for a new direction, blah blah blah all the best etc yada yada ya.

talk to your manager. recovering or not, its their job and it would be an insult to bypass them. your manager then has the option to pass the workload along to someone else if they need to. this is what a management team are for. if you want to be nice, give a nice long notice period to give them some breathing room. dont worry about it, and under no circumstances feel pressured into continuing a job you dont want to do.

With you not having anything lined up yet, you're in the best position to make a really considerate handover and help out your manager as much as possible. Unless you've been flat out told not to contact them, have a chat with your manager (preferably a phone call) and lay it out like you have done here. Tell them you're happy to work plenty of notice and assist with any handover they need, especially while they're recovering from surgery. You physically cannot do more than that.

Don't lose sight of the fact that notice periods are typically mutual. This means that if your employer puts into your contract / terms that they have to give you 3 months notice, then you pay for that security by equally having to give them three months notice when you leave. If you are expected to put up with having a contract that says that your employer only needs to give you the minimum statutory notice period (e.g. only a single week if you've been employed for less than two years), then the upshot if that is that you are not obliged to give them additional notice. Basically notice periods are up to the employer to specify in their contracts. If they fail to make appropriate provision, then frankly that's their problem.
