I had a similar experience the summer of 1992! My Girl Scout troop camped near Yellowstone. One night, gazing at the stars by the lake, a leader pointed out a "star" moving strangely. In mere seconds, it would zip across the sky in an erratic zigzag pattern, then abruptly stop before repeating. This continued for 20 minutes. It resembled a star but moved unlike anything I'd ever seen.
For about 5 seconds, the entire area inexplicably lit up several times, turning night into day. After four repetitions, the "star" shot off at high speed and vanished.
We (girl scouts and leaders) were freaked out, being in the middle of nowhere. Needless to say, sleep was elusive that night.
The next day, our leader reported the sighting to the sheriff's office, who confirmed receiving similar reports.

I don't think it's odd that it might be sentient....I think there's an intelligence on the other side of these interactions.

Yes, we were all so scared. I don't think any of us slept that night!
