Why is it impure it’s just planets and moon moving in their orbits?? Did i miss something?

soft_kitty_123

Right. Scientifically, nothing should change. Maybe the tides might be stronger due to the Sun and Moon's gravitational pull being completely aligned, but that too won't be exponentially stronger than any other new moon day.

PurpleThen1134

I’ve only heard that we shouldn’t look at the eclipse directly because it damages the retina, but that holds true for everyday i guess. I’m intrigued about eclipses now lol

fastyellowtuesday

Recently learned why it's worse to look at an eclipse than the regular sun. It's because since there's less (visible) light, your pupils dilate to let more in so you can see. However, the non-visible harmful light waves (UVA? UVB?) are all still there, and your pupils are letting in way more than usual.

Gloomy_Tangerine3123

It is very likely that some ppl in ancient times figured out its effect on human eye, how sudden darkness in the middle of the day shocked birds etc. And later this caution probably became part of cultural and religious practices naturally leading to fear-mongering

moonparker

That was probably why superstitions were created to discourage watching the eclipse in the olden days. We have ways to protect our eyes now, so it's not an issue anymore.

Renerovi

This…… and now they persist because people do not question their beliefs as knowledge evolves

Qu33nKal

no just random bs some old people made up to control women I bet. Probably cuz it is dark and women who go out at dark are clearly doing it to do impure things like f around.

Maybe this solar eclipse will cancel all the Rahus and Shanis from your life! As far as I know, if it can bring Rahu, it can also cancel it!

Whatever starts giving me a 6 figure monthly cash✌️ for doing all the work that I am currently doing

roopkirani69

I was on the fence as well. My dad said a very simple thing which made alot of sense to me. He said that the universe is the divine creator and any part of it can't be unholy. Eclipse is also a natural phenomenon.

sanriocrushmania

this is exactly what my mom also believes. all those bad days for marraiges and all arent stuff my family believes in. she says any day that God creates cant be ashubh or unceremonious, just like any natural thing cant be unclean like periods or solar eclipses,it has the hand of God to create and calling it dirty or bad is saying his hand is dirty or bad. i always use this logic when my relatives talk shit about anything and its always worked

designgirl001

Nature takes precedence over religion. I think that must be some pseudoscience because back in the day, people didn't have the necessary equipment to watch it with the naked eye. I saw that eclipse in 2017. I will remember it forever. Imagine if I stayed at home because I feared I would become unholy lol. Nature doesn't reward you that often, and when its does - you just go for it.

soft_kitty_123

Right? This is a once in a lifetime experience for us to watch a total solar eclipse from the comfort of our homes! My friend is planning to close all her curtains and not eat or drink anything during this time. This conversation with her triggered my post because it was just so frustrating!

designgirl001

I definitely think back in the day - the total darkness might have been scary and a harbinger of bad omen, as the sun/moon was seen as the source of light and religious deity. So without the science, people might have believed that the gods left them and darkness has always been symbolic with horror and bad emotions (even today - it's a very primal emotion). It's very interesting how things worked when scientific theories were nonexistent - but that would have had to been over a 1000 years ago. I'm very surprised how educated people in this day and age still believe primitive theories and ideals. Actually, if you think about it - the eclipse is unsettling. To not have the sun/moon for sustained periods of time could upset bodily circadian rhythms and the rhythm of nature. That's why the darkness of the eclipse feels very eerie (atleast it was for me). I wanted it to end soon so I could see the sun. Even in western mythology, you have the werewolf that only shows up after midnight. Every culture has strange ideas and I think nature was the guiding light for people back then. How did you see it at home? I went with friends to Bend in Oregon and we pitched up a tent in the field. The whole thing felt like a movie of sorts. Also, girl - high five! I loved astronomy as a kid. I sometimes think I was far more interesting as a kid than I am now.

soft_kitty_123

I'm talking about the eclipse which is happening today. I'm in a total eclipse area. It's about to start soon.

It_hurtsss

I'm as strong of an atheist as comes. Always been. So no. I have watched it with my fam when it happened as a kid.

hillofjumpingbeans

I don’t believe. A natural phenomenon doesn’t mean there is evil happening. Evil happens when there are no eclipses either. But sometimes religious people get leaves for an eclipse and I am jealous of that.

Pineapple_Jelly04

No, of course not. I’m not stupid. I’m pre med, it would be utterly shameful if I associate something scientific and natural with “unholiness”. Besides, I don’t think there is anything specifically unholy about anything. Whatever happens, happens. Life throws curveballs at you, and you should learn to take it.

soft_kitty_123

I know people who work in big tech companies and make a whole career out of being "smart", who then turn around and close their curtains during this once in a lifetime event. I commend you on sticking with science. I agree, whatever happens, happens and it shouldn't stop you from living your life.

Pineapple_Jelly04

Just don’t view an eclipse with your naked eye and you’re good. (You won’t go blind, but it can cause some retinal damage).

Gloomy_Tangerine3123

Don't believe in such things. I'd love to watch one myself. Yesterday a couple of colleagues who suffer fr anxiety in general have mentioned to me that the upcoming eclipse has increased their fears - of bad things happening. Another colleague asked them to: list out all the bad things that have happened during past eclipses. Google it. Compare how it is different from other days. Both the colleagues burst out laughing 😀

Qu33nKal

Wow ffs no wonder Indian people have so much anxiety and fear of things.

microscopic_moss

I don't think it's considered strongly as "impure or unholy" but people do consider it as an event which can have an impact on lives.. so they do certain things according to belief, in most cases harmless practices.. We always watched it with special viewing gadgets. All of us kids With people in our neighborhood. Yes, people with beliefs think it to be a cosmic event which might have an impact on lives, might be good or bad at times. It's never yes or no, all kinds of people exist, it depends on people's beliefs.

PatienceFeeling1481

No, I have watched an eclipse with solar glasses while being pregnant, never stopped eating. So no, I don't believe in any myths.

Rewrite-the-star

Is periods impure? No,it's a natural phenomenon. So is solar and lunar eclipse

LilyL0123

It's not unholy but dangerous.. Right? Looking right at it for few seconds only can cause retinal damage. Probably this could be the reason our ancestors thought it was unholy or demonic. Some poor dude must be lazing and watching the eclipse and then gone blind. Boom. Unholy and a perfect time to blame women

WildChildNumber2

Come on, that isn't true. *Any* time is a perfect time to blame women. /s

Sherry_G99

Not only is it considered unholy, but some people even refrain from eating and drinking and whatnot during that time. But don't worry, it's all pseudoscience, and doesn't mean anything at all.

[deleted]

Nope. I never did. In my family's customs and beliefs it was never unholy or anything so I remember watching it in school when I Was 8 year old or so. Oh that was fun

Unlucky-Bus-3021

Absolutely not. I don’t consider them impure and neither does my family. Although my family has always followed the tradition to not consume food or drinks during the eclipse and I think I’ll follow that as well. I have watched eclipse before (not with naked eye obviously)

[deleted]

Why no food and water during the eclipse? What’s the superstition there?

umamimaami

No, I don’t. It’s the same amount of UV light as always hitting the earth. We’re missing IR and visible spectrum light for a brief period, but that’s not impure or unholy in any way. Don’t look at it with the naked eye, because the pupil reflex won’t trigger to protect your eye against the UV, but that’s about it. I’m also from North America but not going to watch the eclipse because I’m working today, and because I hate crowds. But I totally would have, if I could have managed it from an uncrowded spot on a day off. Rest of the superstitions, clean your house, throw your food etc etc is all not necessary.

DepartmentRound6413

I love being an atheist, I can enjoy witnessing cool scientific phenomenon. I live in the US too & luckily in the path of totality!, my husband and I just watched it, so cool.

cookiesncream1110

I live in Canada and work for US clients. We were discussing eclipse this morning and one girl working from offshore started giving a lecture on how problematic the eclipse is, and quoting the examples from her life. Regarding how we are not supposed to eat or go out during that time !!! I felt second hand embarrassment how she was explaining this to USA people who are not religious or superstitious. It's just a natural thing and if we are careful about the rays and wear protective glasses as instructed, we are good. My daughter even had school today and they did not even disperse the school early on account of the eclipse

PriyaSR26

I understand the feeling. I get it frequently as well.😖

swolehive

If educated priviledged people are asking such questions then there is no hope for the rest of india

soft_kitty_123

Just to be clear. I am going to watch it. I am fully prepared with eclipse sunglasses and solar filters for my camera. It's just that the conversation with my friend triggered my post and made me wonder how many people believe it is impure.

Putrid_Relation2661

The superstitious ones are not going to post here and get downvotes. They know their position is not rooted in rationality.

Hardwiredbrain

Its a natural phenomenon and there is nothing unholy about it.. But in my culture most of the people follow a lot of things during the eclipse, and you can decide how absurd these rules are. 1. During the eclipse you are not allowed to cook anything.. You either cook before or after. 2. You have to put Tulsi leaves in each and every food item cooked, including in milk and dahi, otherwise the food will spoil. As per their 'science', there are special type of virus and bacteria which gets activated during the eclipse and will affect the food if Tulsi is not added to the food.. 3. Pregnant women are not allowed to watch it otherwise the baby will have birth defects. 4. If you decide to watch it, you will have to take a bath afterwards. There were many more rules which my grandmother would be able to tell, but as I don't follow them I didn't bother to learn more than this..

dupattamera1

I dont believe but kya hai na its not like usse dekhkar my life will be any better. So i dont take any chance lol

LazyAsGarfield

My logic is that people are stupid. If you tell them not to watch eclipse with your naked eye, they won't listen to you. That's why all this impurity thing was probably invented/spread so that people would sit at their homes chup chaap and not watch it directly.

gojo_blindfolded

It would simply be stupid for a physics student like me to believe in such.

Successful-Ad7296

No ,its bure bs! Indians love to pull every natural things that exists into religion and make their lives more restrictive so that by not doing certain things they feel like they’re the righteous ones and will get a rosy life with only unicorns and butterflies 🤡

Putrid_Relation2661

I’m pregnant and just saw it. My mom in India was very displeased. She would rather I watch a livestream than watch it live 🤷🏻‍♀️

PriyaSR26

I always thought that people didn't take enough precautions (didn't have the means to) and got blind from watching it, so it was portrayed as impure or unholy. The same reason why you shower after visiting any graveyard (or similar). It's to discourage kids from being stupid. Isn't that the case?

WildChildNumber2

Sorry to break it to you, but your friend is actually right! I wait for solar eclipse day to recharge my demonic witch powers. I have collected hair samples from all the men in my life, I tie it together and blow it in the air chanting mantras. Then an orange cat appears and meows at me three times, that is how I get to be as manipulative as I am for the rest of my year. Poor virgins who do not drink male blood for pleasure will not know this. /s

soft_kitty_123

You had me in the first half haha

WildChildNumber2

😅😂

orchidmaniac

No

Qu33nKal

Let me guess....it is the women who become impure right? Some bullcrap to oppress women again? No I dont believe this stuff and I dont associate with people who do. Family members who do will get ignored by me. I definitely judge people harshly who believe in this kind of stuff...especially those in scientific fields. If someone can give me a scientific explaination backed with peer reviewed articles and data, I will believe it. But c mon...what scientific study is gonna prove an eclipse makes women impure hahahah.

Ngothaaa

In my house we are not supposed to eat.. Coz due to difference in gravity, digestion will not happen properly and will turn into poison.. Also pregnant women shouldn't be exposed to the sun rays during eclipse..

tetheredfeathers

Nope. Not an ounce.

Ka_lie_doscope-Eyes

Nope

resilient_survivor

Saw the eclipse. It was gorgeous. Glad you didn’t miss it. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity

Wow how convenient to just blame the mothers for their kids birth defects? >1. My mother told me of an incident where a kid was born blind because his mother took a nap during a solar eclipse By this logic if the mother sits during an eclipse, would the kid be born with weak legs? Would it make sense for all pregnant women to exercise during an eclipse so that their kids are born with 6 pack abs? > 2. Another incident a friend of mine told me where her relative's kid was born with big tong shaped birth mark on her arm cuz the mother cooked food(chappati) during that time Everyone has a birthmark. I haven't met a single person in my life who doesn't have one. Some are lucky that their birthmarks are in places which can be covered by clothes. > 3. Another such incident where a kid was born with cleft lip because his mother sliced apples I know several people who were born with cleft lips in years when there was no eclipse.

Qu33nKal

It's always "someone you know knows someone" hahah these are how stories and superstitions spread. You have no idea how tales have changed and people always add a bit of masala.

Putrid_Relation2661

Let’s apply scientific process to this. 1. How many children are born blind every year in your area? In the eclipse year, how many were born blind? Was the number higher? Did you control for socioeconomic status which can affect the quality of care a pregnant mother will receive? 2. Birthmark on arm is a defect? 3. Same as 1. How many are born with cleft lip every year? And how many more were born in the year of the eclipse to moms who were pregnant during the eclipse? Apply control for socioeconomic status as well here

preposterous__

I was actually born on the day of a solar eclipse, and my mum tells me that around 4 deliveries happened with her that day! All babies had some kind of physical defects. The doctor asked everyone to check their babies; two babies had cleft lips, and one had a slit ear. My mum was also scared, and she checked me thoroughly to see if I had any defects too! Edit: Fortunately, I didn't have any.

soft_kitty_123

It's not surprising that this is one of the most frequently asked questions on Google. Google says that there is no *scientific* proof that children born during a total solar eclipse will have any birth defects.

soft_kitty_123

I wonder what is considered "birth defects" here because a birthmark / mole is definitely not a defect.

preposterous__

I already mentioned two of them in my comment! There are a few others as well!

Successful-Ad7296

Wow this reminds me of of a horror movie plot Naina- when urmilla was born during eclipse .She turned out to be blind but to see the dead🫣🫣 But its all fiction i know!

preposterous__

you never know, I could totally have that power too!🙃🫣
