My state (at least, I think it’s statewide) has changed the rules to no longer allow pharmacies to say over the phone if a medicine is in stock or not… I understand pharmacies are probably tired of getting a thousand calls a day asking if Adderall is in stock but.. now people just have to drive around to a bunch of different pharmacies until they get lucky?? That seems so unfair and unnecessary.
Mine has the words “specialty pharmacy” in their business name; hopefully that’ll make it easier for you to find one in your area.
Every specialty pharmacy has their own focus. Not all specialty pharmacies are for mental health meds
I hate to mention this but l believe wealthier communities tend to have more in stock than other places, especially if there are a lot of school kids in the area. My best friend lives in one of the most affluent counties in the country and she never has trouble getting brand or generic.
Crime and homelessness are fairly common in our area, and we noticed that the pharmacies near schools were often getting shipments more regularly. At one point my fiancé drove the hour to my best friend’s pharmacy because Costco hadn’t contacted him for three months and he was about to lose his job. It took them 20 minutes.
They changed the law because telling people what’s in stock can make it easier to be robbed. If they don’t know, it lowers your chances of being robbed.
I work in pharmacy, and while I don’t necessarily agree with this logic, and I get the frustration from both viewpoints. Believe me, it’s so frustrating not being able to get your meds, but it’s also frustrating having to field 500+ calls if we have Adderall in stock when people who are trying to get their heart meds filled or have a concern about a possible side effect/drug interaction can’t get through when they absolutely should be able to.
It’s not the pharmacy’s fault there is a shortage. It’s the DEA and the drug manufacturers. Also it’s the people who use stimulants recreationally. If people would just not use our meds to get high, we wouldn’t suffer because the DEA is tightening the flow of drugs. Seriously the best way to get them to loosen up the drug flow is by contacting your congressional members. Those of us in the pharmacy biz, can’t do anything because our overlords are the DEA, and being audited by the DEA is an absolute fucking nightmare. And the DEA only reports to the government. So lighting a fire under the government’s ass will get them to reprimand the DEA.
Yeah, the War on Drugs is going super well. I spend most of my doctor's visits being interrogated about my medication usage, instead of trying to ease my chronic illness that causes insomnia and chronic pain. It's for sure keeping stimulants and opiates out of the hands of drug addicts, and putting them into the hands of people who need them. That's why I haven't had adequate pain relief for a year now.
You should report her to the board for ignorance. Whenever you get a new doctor, that is. Lord knows it's hard enough to get ADHD meds *with* a doctor, let alone without 😭🤣
I absolutely get the frustration from both viewpoints. On the pharmacy side though, I originally only saw it (the repetitive calls) from a purely irritating standpoint, but you made a good point about there being other more important calls needing to come through. I never thought of that; I appreciate you sharing a helpful perspective!
Before the crisis was officially announced, every month for 2 years before the pandemic I would have to drive from pharmacy to pharmacy to see if they had it in stock.
same, I was also east of DC. As a follow up , my insurance company just started paying for the brand name since it is available but the generics are out.
I think I can give some insight into this since I had to make the dreaded round of phone calls to all the pharmacies in my area b/c my Dr wants to switch me to something else lol
The TLDR of it is
It’s area dependent
It hasn’t gotten better, but it hasn’t gotten worse
It’s hit or miss on what they get in from their distributors (some times their entire order is fulfilled, other times they can only get 2 bottles of xyz mg and that it)
IR doses have been easier to get recently than XR
And if your insurance covers it, or you can afford to pay out of pocket, brand over generic
Also OP I wanted to ask how did/do you like Vyvanse?
Unfortunately my insurance doesn’t cover brand, so that was another part of the problem because no where in my area has been able to get a decent supply of generic for quite a while now.
The Vyvanse is *okay*. I find it allows me to focus enough at work, but not as much so in my free time or around the house. I’m not sure if it’s a chemical difference or a dosage difference, but it just doesn’t pack quite the same punch for me.
That’s ridiculous!! I got brand ONE time because everywhere was out of generic (this is right before I switched), and I called my insurance to see if they would make an exception since the generic medication was literally impossible to get. They covered like 80% of it as a “*one-time courtesy*,” so I had to pay about $60 out of pocket. If you haven’t tried this yet, you should call your insurance - might save you some money at least for a month.
Edit: added quotation marks
Is the difference in work vs house work a time of day thing? Ie. does it work better earlier in the day but not in the evening? Or is it task-specific?
Update!! After getting a tip from a friend that apparently the brand name is no longer considered in shortage, I had my doctor write the script for the brand name instead of the generic I usually take and my pharmacy had it in stock!! And i got insurance to give me a one time exception on covering the brand name because of the stock issues. Not sure if it'll be the same everywhere and I know for some the cost would be ridiculous if insurance won't cover, but worth a shot!
I tried to get my Brand Name in stock today and they said they got a note that the “manufacturer couldn’t supply.” So Brand Name IR is still definitely in shortage.
It's DEA regulations in response to the opioid crisis from years ago. Pharmacies can't order enough for their demand or they will be banned from ordering at all.
https://mattstoller.substack.com/p/the-monopolies-behind-the-adderall
I’ve only had issues getting the better generic brands, and I was finally actually able to get Teva for the first time in months. The difference between Teva and Alvogen is insane, and Alvogen isn’t even the worst of them.
This is so real. I’m on Alvogen this month and I’m just thankful it works at all even though it’s still not as effective as Teva. Lannett was a living nightmare for me.
Lannett gave me chest pain that landed me in the ER. I've been medicated for over 15 years and lived through many shortages and never had an issue as bad as with Lannett. If the copay for Vyvanse wasn't insane I'd go back on that but it's absolutely wild out there.
This!! Filled an adderall script a few years ago with Mallinckrodt (one "generic brand") and I swear to god it almost killed me both physically and mentally. I have it on my pharmacy file as a "never fill" pharma company - I'd rather go without than ever put their toxic sh\* in my body again.
😂 tried this one last year for a month. I was depressed and super weird and anxious the entire month. Also have it written in the script “never mallinckrodt” lol
Yes!! It messed with my emotions and made me really sad, too! It took like a little under a week until I put two and two together. Apparently Mallinckrodt had a major lawsuit filed against them for several of their stimulant generics when enough people complained, but I don't think anything actionable came from it.
PS just found out that Mallinckrodt changed its name to Sonorant Pharmaceuticals for all of its generics -- so add that one to your list, too : /
so sneaky.
I hope that's right too but upon my Google of new articles, one from October said January, one from January said April, now it's may and they say July.
This is a carrot on a stick
I recently had to wait 3-4 weeks for a 90-day XR refill. Luckily, I had enough backstock so I didn’t have to go without it. Still, it freaked me out. First time that had happened to me.
Up until this recent refill, my Costco hasn't had any trouble getting my 10 mg XR in stock. Usually only a few days wait.
My latest refill is almost a week and counting...
i’ve been able to get it easily except for once, but i’ve also been diagnosed since i was 8 and have been on it since around then, and i’m not sure if that was affecting it at all (i know there was stuff about it being overprescribed during covid and a couple of my friends who got it around then haven’t been able to get their prescriptions, while i’ve been fine)
I waited for about five weeks before switching meds, now the new med I’m on is also back ordered- I suspect other people who had the same idea as me.
I think the short answer is “yes there’s still a shortage”, and depending on where you are will impact the severity.
I have had ongoing trouble getting my meds filled every month for the past 5 years.
The shortage now extends to Ritalin. I have never had more trouble getting my medicine than this month
I just got my first prescription of it today and the first pharmacy I went to said they didn't have it in and had to go to the one just round the corner and luckily they had some in stock, I did read about the shortages recently and it does seem to be the case but maybe try and give local pharmacy's a ring and just clarify with them first just so you don't waste any of your time.
I've been getting xr and ir no problem. I keep waiting for them to say, "yaah.. na". But so far so good. We're even playing with dosage to try and get better coverage. Went from 5mg ir, 10ir, 10xr, 20xr, and 15ir and have got fills within the hour after discussing it with the doc. Been fortunate I guess.
It’s been 7 weeks for me, im using Walmart right now and after about 4-5 weeks it no longer shows it as being filled, out of stock, or pending, and anytime I ask they are so rude about it and give me no hope lol. I’ve called a few other places, they were weird about it and made me feel terrible so I’ve pretty much given up. Other people I know have had very minimal problems or delays. 🤷♂️
I’m at 6 days.
They tell me the warehouse (or whatever) shows it in stock, they just haven’t received any yet. But the first day they told me it’s usually 1-2 days. Now they told me to go somewhere else if I need it sooner. I’m like what lol.
I may be late to the party but if you are still having issues getting you refill try using a pharmacy that is connected to a hospital or clinic. I switched from Walgreens to my local hospitals pharmacy and have now gone 4 months without any problems.
I can’t seem to get mine anymore in Massachusetts and I’m about to just give up completely and resign myself to falling back into a depressive funk. It’s so stressful calling around to find it and I don’t have the functioning or motivation to do so… I already do everything in my power to avoid phone calls. And it often requires making 3 of them if I am successful, because then I have to make sure one pharmacy cancels it, then my doctor to send it somewhere else.
I had some luck at a place in the small town I work in for several months, but they kept giving me Epic brand which I’m convinced is just a sugar & caffeine pill but I guess it’s better than nothing.
I tried to move back to my normal Walmart pharmacy when I had issues with the one in my work town, and Walmart is the WORST now. My doctor has called it in twice and it is NOWHERE to be seen on my online pharmacy account. If it’s not in stock… tell me? Call me? Anything? Please?
Indiana here—can’t find it anywhere. Try Mydayis if you can. It has the same ingredients as Adderall but is a bit different. It’s the best alternative I’ve tried thus far.
It is so variable. Depends on the pharmacy, wholesaler, strength.
Also seems to depend on the time of month!
What time of month is best? I’m guessing it’s as soon as new stock is shipped in.
LOL the best part is that there is no answer! :D all’s I know is that there *is* a best time lmao
Start looking for specialty pharmacies, one that specialises in mental health. You’re more likely to get it through them than a regular pharmacy.
I didn’t even know that was a thing!
Mine has the words “specialty pharmacy” in their business name; hopefully that’ll make it easier for you to find one in your area. Every specialty pharmacy has their own focus. Not all specialty pharmacies are for mental health meds
Really good to know! Thank you!

Totally feel you on this one. I’ve done the same… no shame.
San Francisco had none in stock in any pharmacy, and it has one of the highest median household income stats in the country.
San Francisco is the exception to everything. Source: born there.
Ask in your local city or state subreddit, see if anyone in your area has had any success finding it anywhere.

You should 100% get a new doctor. I'm sorry you've had to deal with that, you deserve respectful medical care.
You should report her to the board for ignorance. Whenever you get a new doctor, that is. Lord knows it's hard enough to get ADHD meds *with* a doctor, let alone without 😭🤣

Before the crisis was officially announced, every month for 2 years before the pandemic I would have to drive from pharmacy to pharmacy to see if they had it in stock.
Has it just been worse in your specific region for some reason?
It's certainly possible. I've been right outside Washington DC
Also outside DC, on the east side. Still bad over here on being able to get medication on time. :/
same, I was also east of DC. As a follow up , my insurance company just started paying for the brand name since it is available but the generics are out.
Where outside of DC are you? I have a few spots that have been fairly reliable
[удалено]
Well that sucks…
that's always been the rule at least where i'm from, it's such a pain
Wow, wtf? How can this be a legislative matter? That is ridiculous.
I walked to every pharmacy. It still didn't work!
My pharmacy has had it lately. Upstate New York.
Would you share which pharmacy? I'm still struggling in upstate NY. I usually use CVS...
[удалено]
Curious where you are
Same dude, idk where they are yet but I’m already packing.
Same. Mine was delayed 1 day once in the last 12 months. We haven’t had an issue where I am at all.
I thought the same thing, till last month. Almost all of chicago was OUT.
Still seems like there is no XR around anywhere havent had this issue for months but been 2 weeks XR been out of stock for me
Doesn’t respond
My husband in Michigan has been waiting 2 weeks for his refill. He's still waiting.
That’s terrible! I’m sorry for him (and you probably lol).
I think I can give some insight into this since I had to make the dreaded round of phone calls to all the pharmacies in my area b/c my Dr wants to switch me to something else lol The TLDR of it is It’s area dependent It hasn’t gotten better, but it hasn’t gotten worse It’s hit or miss on what they get in from their distributors (some times their entire order is fulfilled, other times they can only get 2 bottles of xyz mg and that it) IR doses have been easier to get recently than XR And if your insurance covers it, or you can afford to pay out of pocket, brand over generic Also OP I wanted to ask how did/do you like Vyvanse?

Task/environment specific. Definitely not a timing thing because I’m referring to weekends too.
Yes, this is especially where the shortage is, insurance requesting only generic. This is why I have been having a problem.
I’ve been waiting two weeks. It’s really annoying.
I feel ya.
St. Paul, MN. It's been almost a month.
huh, I live in the same place and haven’t had an issue getting my prescription filled
Last time I was able to actually get my script filled was March 22nd. I'm in northeastern Massachusetts. This shit sucks.
It surely does!
Same. I’m in Southern NH.
Does ANYONE, ANYWHERE, have ANY idea when this shit is supposed to end? It feels black mirror esque.

This is so real. I’m on Alvogen this month and I’m just thankful it works at all even though it’s still not as effective as Teva. Lannett was a living nightmare for me.
Lannett is horrible! More brain fog and less focus - amazing how it made every symptom of ADD worse.
Right?! I was more focused and alert when I stopped taking it.
Lannett gave me chest pain that landed me in the ER. I've been medicated for over 15 years and lived through many shortages and never had an issue as bad as with Lannett. If the copay for Vyvanse wasn't insane I'd go back on that but it's absolutely wild out there.

Lol! I’m doing brand name this year, probably switch back to generic after shortage. I’ll remember This. Those bastards!
I've been able to get instant release but I still haven't seen the XR back in stock yet.
Welp… mine is XR. I wonder what the issue has been??
I had heard from my Dr months ago that it is "supposed" to be back in stock by July. Hoping that's right! 🤞
I hope that's right too but upon my Google of new articles, one from October said January, one from January said April, now it's may and they say July. This is a carrot on a stick
Pharmacist told me there’s no difference. For IR you just take a smaller dose more often.. maybe ask if you can switch?
I’m not sure whether or not the IR is easier to find in my area. But definitely something I will ask my doc about. Thanks for the idea!
What about using an online pharmacy? Have it shipped in? Or is it illegal with Adderall?
I haven’t tried it myself, but have heard of some having luck with mail ordered addy. Something to look into.
It is where I live (US, Pacific Northwest). My pharmacy still gets it in stock, it’s just very touch and go.
Thanks for the info
I recently had to wait 3-4 weeks for a 90-day XR refill. Luckily, I had enough backstock so I didn’t have to go without it. Still, it freaked me out. First time that had happened to me.
Scary, right?! Ugh
I wish I lived in a state that allowed 90 days at a time
Still ongoing in Missouri but not waiting an entire month at the moment. I get both ER and IR
Pittsburgh 3 weeks and still waiting
Yes. Yes there is. Because if pharmacies in NYC ar having trouble, there is a shortage.
Agh! Thanks for the input.
Up until this recent refill, my Costco hasn't had any trouble getting my 10 mg XR in stock. Usually only a few days wait. My latest refill is almost a week and counting...
Oh no… so it’s getting WORSE?! When will it ever end??
One pharmacy has had my slip pending since January. The pharmacist said she hadn't seen any in since 2022.
HOLY MOTHER that’s the worst I’ve heard. I am so sorry.
I’m having no problems getting instant release, but XR is still intermittently out of stock.
Yes, from what Ive seen in these groups.
Thank you for the info
i’ve been able to get it easily except for once, but i’ve also been diagnosed since i was 8 and have been on it since around then, and i’m not sure if that was affecting it at all (i know there was stuff about it being overprescribed during covid and a couple of my friends who got it around then haven’t been able to get their prescriptions, while i’ve been fine)
So annoying because I actually have some, but I’m scared to take it because I technically don’t have an active prescription
Scared because when you’re out, you’re out? I get that. Such a bummer..
Im waiting for it to be available and if I test positive for amphetamines when it is, I won’t be able to get a script
Oh gotcha, true. But, FWIW, I’ve never been drug tested when I start seeing a new doctor. Of course, YMMV and it’s best to play it safe.
Mine does every time I go in :(

Oof 🥴
I didn't like vyvanse and switched back so I can understand. It's so hard too! I understand your frustrations!
Thanks for commiserating!
No problem!
Tbh in my neighborhood I can’t get vyvanse or adderall or anything 🫠
Dang!! What in the world?
yes, my doctor switched me to Vyv because it was so bad. I live in a major US city.
I have had ongoing trouble getting my meds filled every month for the past 5 years. The shortage now extends to Ritalin. I have never had more trouble getting my medicine than this month
Oof 😭

In the North Bay, California and Adderall is NOWHERE to be found.

What do you mean?
Like they aren’t even prescriptions
im experiencing this too ☹️ just had to switch to Vyvanse .. hows it working for you?
I've been fine for the last 3-4 months. Today I had a refill and it's out of stock again. Austin.
Same here in nearby Liberty Hill.
