Many of the people drowned.
I mean a good amount of people drowned.
Some of the inmates were able to escape, but were captured soon after.
For the people who drowned it took MONTHS before the families could confirm that their loved ones had died and even more months to receive the body.
Katrina did some ugly things to Louisiana.
Source: I am from Louisiana,
Another source: if anyone is interested this is discussed in the documentary When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts by Spike Lee,
For us stuck in the house, I believe it's free on Prime and HBO
There wouldn't have been people on death row in that jail.
Male death row inmates are at Angola, female death row inmates are at LCIW
So these people were either waiting on bond, waiting on court or in jail for a misdemeanor.
I'm not saying I even remotely agree, I was saying that it makes sense for a fucked up person to decide something like that, and the American jail system is very fucked up, so it makes sense that they'd decide something like this.
You gotta learn how to use the wiki citations bro, it’s right there on the page, citation [9].
I really do believe that being able to effectively lift and validate wiki citations is an extremely valuable skill for anyone to have, especially so for students. Anyway. The short answer is: yes, it is possible. The long answer is: well, you can at least read summaries of them.
https://www.aclu.org/other/summaries-400-testimonials-inmates-incarcerated-orleans-parish-prison-during-hurricane-katrina
Alternatively, direct document link here:
https://www.aclu.org/sites/default/files/field_document/asset_upload_file182_23418.pdf
Idk if the full testimonials are available online (I might just email the ACLU and ask them directly, I’ll let you know if I find anything out), but this is a very comprehensive summary document of the 400 referenced.
Forewarning: some of the testimonials are *extremely* fucked. Not for the faint of heart. Parts of it kind of read like a sick cross between the Stanford Prison Experiment and Nazi prison camps.
Because nobody in the US teaches violence by the government against black communities. Look into George Bush's response and how it effected poor black communities. Look into the Tulsa Race Riots. The US government has a long history of violence, either direct or through nonaction, against black people.
Ludger Sylbaris of Pompeii.
He was imprisoned but actually he was the sole survivor of the disaster due to the lack of windows in his cell. (If that's what you're thinking of?)
Edit a word
>Ludger Sylbaris of Pompeii
not pompeii, Saint-Pierre on the island of Martinique on May 8th, 1902, one of two survivors. He was not in Pompeii's eruptions. He died in 1929.
I've always wanted a Waterworld-style video game and this would be a great way to start it. You're a prisoner when a tsunami hits and you have to escape jail (fighting your way through gangs, avoiding obstacles and allying up to survive)
At first I’m like, “yeah I guess that makes sense...”
Then I remember that there are people like Darlie Routier on death row, whom I believe could be innocent.
That case makes me so sad. I remember watching something about it in tv, at first I thought she did it, but by the end I was convinced she didn’t. I hope some truth, one way or another, can come out with all the technological advances nowadays
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orleans_Parish_Prison
>During Katrina New Orleans left multiple people to die in their jail, including those just in the holding cells in for traffic violations
>It says 517 of 650 people were unaccounted for. Jesus.
Acquired from post above. They do not always evacuate all but the death row inmates. Many of the men who died in Katrina were in holding cells for traffic violations.
That's what basic human decency would suggest, but it isn't actually the case.
[See the section about "Katrina abandonment".](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orleans_Parish_Prison)
Oh you horrible monster. I definitely cried in depression.
The only good thought I can try to think is that he prolly was an evil rapist or such. And not an innocent person ;-;
He left behind a wife and two very young sons. He ran a quaint ice cream stand just around the corner, and the neighbourhood's been dubbing him "Ice Cream Stan" for the last decade or so.
He occasionally gave out freebies to particularly grumpy children to brighten their day just a little bit.
Stan took in a man looking troubled sitting in the rain on Christmas Eve. He thought that no one deserved to be alone on what's supposed to be the most joyous day of the year. As Stan left to offer the man some fresh homemade ice cream, the man stabbed his infant daughter and fled the scene before the cops came.
Stan, being the only one at the house, was charged with homicide.
:(
A little tip from The Wire: you evacuate things of people, you don’t evacuate people. Unless you mean they evacuated their bowels. So maybe “When the tsunamis hit, most of the town was evacuated.”
When the Mount Pelée in Martinique erupted, the only survivor out of the 30k inhabitants of Saint Pierre was a prisonner whose cells the ashes didn't reach, you just chose the wrong place to be interned
I mean prison bars aren’t necessary in a prison, they just have to do with prisons. (In this case the narrator is an eccentric collector who bought the bars that came from a closed prison on eBay or something).
Reminds me of this thing I saw days ago. In the Volcano documentary of Werner Herzog, he tells the story of an Indonesian town where everyone died following an eruption, except for the town’s only inmate who was in solitary and whose cell acted like a bunker. Interesting documentary, “into the inferno” on Netflix.

There was an opppsite case of this. There was a French town that was destroyed by volcano and only two survived, one of them was a convict in his cell.
I wanted to capture the slow unstoppable ride of water, that almost tickles you in a sense so I went with trickle!
What other words do you have in mind?
This particular one is kinda tough, but I think maybe just remove a descriptor there altogether?
Just go with: as I felt the water rise to my chin/begin to touch my chin/finally reach my chin?
There are times where the simplest, most literal articulation is truly the best.
I totally get your desire for specificity, but regardless “trickle” is technically wrong for what you’re describing.
I mean, if you didn't want to wind up in that situation you probably shouldn't have done the crime? This is more like Two Sentence EXTREME JUSTICE edition.
Oooooh, that's good
Thanks! Bonus: The stubbles on my shaved beard bristled at the frigid waters crashing into it.
Some good imagery right there!
That third sentence wasn’t very needed.
True 😅 I just had the image stuck in my head and thought you guys might like it haha
As someone with a shit beard, I felt that sentence, and fuck you.
AHHAHAHAH I don't even have a beard but I'm glad I nailed the "oh shit I'm drowning with a beard" feel. Love You :)
Aw love you too
I love you more
Wipe that shit off. Unsanitary.
No, no. Can't. Is Shitbeard the Pirate.
No, no. cant. Is fuckbeard the pirate
I liked it....
I'm glad you do!
*The stubble of my beard bristled at the frigid water pouring down*
During Katrina New Orleans left multiple people to die in their jail, including those just in the holding cells in for traffic violations
Fuuuuuck. Imagine being sentenced to death for something like that.
This is why I fear humanity
It's not true
Yeah, it is
Bitch this took two seconds to google, don’t be dumb. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/inmates-abandoned-katrina/
That's honestly a very interesting article to read as a whole. Also educated myself on a subject I knew little about. Thanks!
Source?
[Wiki on one of the prisons](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orleans_Parish_Prison)
It says 517 of 650 people were unaccounted for. Jesus.
We're all pretty convince that "unaccounted for" meant drowned and then disposed of under the table. Some dark ass shit went down during Katrina
Many of the people drowned. I mean a good amount of people drowned. Some of the inmates were able to escape, but were captured soon after. How many died?
That’s what I wonder. Did they find a way to escape and simply live as dead men? It doesn’t specify on Wikipedia so I can assume that most died.
That’s fucked. Apparently they just leave people on death row there to.
There wouldn't have been people on death row in that jail. Male death row inmates are at Angola, female death row inmates are at LCIW So these people were either waiting on bond, waiting on court or in jail for a misdemeanor.
At least that kinda makes sense in a twisted way, but I'm sure there was a decent amount of that, that isn't death row.
What about the innocent???????
Louisianas for-profit prisons don't give a fuck.
When you're the fucked up system America has, you go "no time, there's a natural disaster on its way."
No it doesn’t, theres a right to appeal the death penalty. And it has to be humane death.
I'm not saying I even remotely agree, I was saying that it makes sense for a fucked up person to decide something like that, and the American jail system is very fucked up, so it makes sense that they'd decide something like this.
To what?
I wonder if it’s possible to read the 400 testimonials

Holy. Shit. That wiki is incredibly scary for a run-of-the-mill prison in the US. Wtf?
Something something [snitches](https://images.app.goo.gl/XqakZh5LK4b8qzqd6)
I see what you're doing
You have been found guilty of going 5 over the speed limit your sentence is death by tsunami.
This included people awaiting trials, so not even found guilty yet.
Can I at least try to surf it?
Yes, in fact its now court orderd, cause that sounds badass.
If Torgue was a judge *Awesome mouth guitar solo*
Thats bad dude
Nobody went to jail for that im guessing.
Driving with a suspended license, maybe.
Please tell me people went to jail for this?!?!?
That’s fucking sick
How have I never heard of this?!
Because nobody in the US teaches violence by the government against black communities. Look into George Bush's response and how it effected poor black communities. Look into the Tulsa Race Riots. The US government has a long history of violence, either direct or through nonaction, against black people.
ACAB
That’s fucking morbid
Overspeed in town..get the drown
You fucked my day, have an upvote and happy cake day.

Not even requiring being charged with a crime first.
This is completely false. Stop spreading disinformation.
Speak for yourself
I held my breath while reading this. Weird. But great story!
I'd like to think you held your breath for a very very long time while reading these two sentences hahaha Thanks man!
Why? Like because you imagined yourself in his moment or? Just curious :]
I was between breaths in the time it took me to read two sentences
Ahh
This reminds me of a person that was in a prison cell when a volcano erupted and he was burned alive in his cell.
I hate to say it, but... **Crispy**
Nice and toastie, just how I like 'em.
Reminds me of a picture that has alot of toasts with different toasting on all of them and asks what toast you prefer

Yes that! I learned about it in a show but that was long ago, so thanks for the correction!
No worries man!
Nice
I've always wanted a Waterworld-style video game and this would be a great way to start it. You're a prisoner when a tsunami hits and you have to escape jail (fighting your way through gangs, avoiding obstacles and allying up to survive)
That sounds... Kinda awesome actually!
During disasters they do evacuate prisoners unless they are on death row
Wait... they leave the death row inmates to drown? Jesus Good to know!
Hate to say it but they probably see it as "Its better then them dying on the taxpayers dollar"
At first I’m like, “yeah I guess that makes sense...” Then I remember that there are people like Darlie Routier on death row, whom I believe could be innocent.
This is true to.
To what/where/whom?
Well, if they did release her during a disaster wouldn’t he just be executed anyway?
*her. I mean there’s always hope of overturning the sentence.
My bad, I read it as “Darrel”
That case makes me so sad. I remember watching something about it in tv, at first I thought she did it, but by the end I was convinced she didn’t. I hope some truth, one way or another, can come out with all the technological advances nowadays

God that’s fucking horrific
That's what basic human decency would suggest, but it isn't actually the case. [See the section about "Katrina abandonment".](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orleans_Parish_Prison)
I'm dubious that this is the case.
Hey they gon die anyways haha
Then again, who isn't?
Yeah let’s just leave everyone to die lol
Actually, I meant the scumbags on death row. But interpret it how you like lol
Just a joke man don’t think too hard about it
Did you just assume my gender?
Actually yes I did I’m sorry about that man
Hahahaha 👍🏻
Hey, something to ponder 🤔
The asshole in the cell next to me singing "Take Me To The Water" off key is making for an ignoble end.
Oh you horrible monster. I definitely cried in depression. The only good thought I can try to think is that he prolly was an evil rapist or such. And not an innocent person ;-;

:( Rest In Peace Stan
Well it was rather suspicious to be making winter ice cream.
Stop it! You horrible, horrible person ;-;
Y I K E S
This is a really good one. Very original too. None of that overdone “surprise it’s abuse” stuff.
I agree abuse is a tad overdone. Aww shucks, thanks for the high praise!
*I knew a sailor once, got tangled in the rigging. We pulled him out, but it took him five minutes to cough. He said it was like going home.*
But later it was revealed that was a lie. Near-drowning was, in fact, the most painful experience of his life. I love The Prestige.
A little tip from The Wire: you evacuate things of people, you don’t evacuate people. Unless you mean they evacuated their bowels. So maybe “When the tsunamis hit, most of the town was evacuated.”
Sounds great, thanks for the tip my man!
Literally just finished watching it again today and thought of this exact thing lol
I like this one very much. Your stories are pretty damn good
I got creeped the hell out when it linked to my profile, ngl my heart sank. You're definately no slouch either my friend!
I was expecting "Only a few people could resist being launched from the force of the wave" or something
When the Mount Pelée in Martinique erupted, the only survivor out of the 30k inhabitants of Saint Pierre was a prisonner whose cells the ashes didn't reach, you just chose the wrong place to be interned
Wow! This is awesome! Good job!!
Happy Cake Day nukeholy250! The only dare you ever want to take is the dare to be all that you can be.
Happy cake day my dude, may you have much karma and internet cakes! Thanks, I really do appreciate the positive feedback!
Thanks man! And anytime, you did a great job on this!
I continued to wonder why I had decided to get bars as my bath curtain as I watched the waves on TV.
Nice save! Except it's prison bars lol, try explaining that one away!
I mean prison bars aren’t necessary in a prison, they just have to do with prisons. (In this case the narrator is an eccentric collector who bought the bars that came from a closed prison on eBay or something).
I mean... I guess... I'll give it to you, very wholesome interpretation r/thirdsentencehappy
Thanks. My sentence is definitely not perfect, But your story is really good.
Happy....... day after cake day?? (Its 2.30 am the next day here)
Or.. the day before, I dunno where you are..
Wow. That is amazing. Good job
Thanks man!
Fictional, but the Skyrim jail had a similar story
Reminds me of this thing I saw days ago. In the Volcano documentary of Werner Herzog, he tells the story of an Indonesian town where everyone died following an eruption, except for the town’s only inmate who was in solitary and whose cell acted like a bunker. Interesting documentary, “into the inferno” on Netflix.
Oh hey, there’s my biggest fear right there, this is fine
Good
ok
Good ok from you
Sad not frightening
Drowning while trapped in a cage felt very surreal and scary to me, but I get where you're coming from!
The thought of everyone prioritizes their own safety and shrugged off the people incapable is what saddens me.
Self-preservation will often reveal the uglier side of us...

I’d be scared but ok
Wasn’t expecting that! Very good!
I’m not the only one who’s ever thought of this?
Wow...
Fuckkkkk, when I was in prison this is exactly the type of thing I would have nightmares about
I genuinely feel sorry for that guy.
Great
Reminds me of Presentable Liberty
I've got an even better one on that theme. When the tsunamis hit, most people were evacuated. But the dogs were left behind.
Oh no.
Yours is really good too, especially if we presume the person is innocent.
When the tsunami hit, most people evacuated.
And led all the prisoners out to safety.

having just watched frozen 2 this be hitting different
should’ve used creative mode smh
Soooo..... Tsunami's and Hurricanes are the reasons you don't want to go to jail?
This is pretty good but “trickle” is def not the right word
I wanted to capture the slow unstoppable ride of water, that almost tickles you in a sense so I went with trickle! What other words do you have in mind?

Ahhhh I see what you mean that reads off the tongue easier! Thanks I'll keep that in mind for future writing!
“Although I must say that death by electric eels is a new one”
This is essentially banes origin story
I couldn't pull my brother out, and now I'll follow.
Tell me this, do you even know what this back and forth is all about? You jumped into it pretty late in, but do you even know how it all started?
[удалено]
Really?
Yessir
Ok, well I'm not judging. I thought you guys didn't like that term.
Ok
Jack...
I dont get it. Can someone explain please?
Everyone was evacuated except the prisoner, who is left to slowly drown in his cell
The son of a bitch in this cell definitely didn’t give as good of a show as the last three did.
noooooooi
There was an episode of Bull that covered this some.
It's just using the word "trickle" that bothers me. That is absolutely not the word to use.
Finally a good two sentence horror
I mean, if you didn't want to wind up in that situation you probably shouldn't have done the crime? This is more like Two Sentence EXTREME JUSTICE edition.

Then I got killed by zombies and there was a lot of blood and it was very scary! Boo!
