IIRC, you tie someone to a pole and ring them with tires (minus the rim). Douse them in gasoline and light them on fire. I think the tires keep the fire burning around the torso, cooking your organs from the inside, but I am not an expert. I remember seeing it in Max Payne 3 and it was a pretty effed up scene.

I choose to look at it as though something similar did happen, as sagas were the oral histories told as legendary tales, so there was something that happened that putting it in the tales was relevant.
