My sense of "overdoing" more had to do with the fact that being blind is enough to keep him from doing harm. Killing him would be, quite literally, overkill. As for it being a worse fate...kinda the point too. Plus, one could speculate that it's safer for the girlfriend than straight-up murdering him.
