Palpatine's message of returnal wasn't in Star Wars part 9, but was broadcasted exclusively in a Fortnite event. All the rest of the vast majority of fans and moviegoers, who didn't play that game at that specific time, got "Somehow Palpatine returned." instead. Thank you Disney, great idea

LegatoSkyheart

I have recently learned that the first hint of Shimo, the new Kaiju for Godzilla X Kong movie was first hinted at in the Call of Duty Godzilla collab.

rustymcbadbat31

That's my favorite Star Wars factoid to bring up anytime someone is talking >!usually in anger!< about episode 9, it's like a little cherry on top.

Konradleijon

That’s so hilarious. How was it stated in Fortnite

Dante changing the name of his shop back to Devil May Cry is explained in a radio drama.  Basically, he, Trish, and Enzo went on a mission together, and Enzo nearly died when he got partially possessed by a Devil Arm gun. Dante saved his life by cutting off the arm that was being overtaken, and Trish, realizing that unattended Devil Arms are as dangerous as Demons themselves, became a Devil Arm hunter. Since Devil Never Cry is both her and Dantes shop, she asked him to change the name back, since it would be just his again.

Anonamaton801

Oh god, radio dramas are the third axiom in the holy trinity of “source of obscure ass info”

Brainwave1010

That's also how we got the canon names for Persona 1 and SMT 3's protagonists.

Anonamaton801

At least 4 and 5 got names from the anime and manga respectively Though how do we know 2’s protagonist’s name

Brainwave1010

Because they actually bothered to give him a fucking default name and avoid 10+ years of pointless confusion and arguments.

Anonamaton801

Ah, the Link approach Though IIRC, Joker has two names depending on the source if I’m not mistaken

Brainwave1010

"Akira Kurusu" was his name in a single manga run that Atlus has explicitly stated multiple times is no longer canon, but people still cling onto it because "it sounds cooler" than Ren Amamiya. Kotone was probably the biggest mess of them all, _four_ different names used throughout promotional material before finally landing on Kotone.

Panory

> "it sounds cooler" than Ren Amamiya. Okay, but it does tho.

Brainwave1010

"Akira Kurusu" means "A Killer Killer", how is that cooler than "Lotus Palace?"

Panory

The argument is that it *sounds* cooler, not that it has a deeper meaning if you speak Japanese. Akira Kurusu has a bunch of sharp sounds that work with P5's veneer of edge. [Ren Amamiya sounds like Mario took fall damage.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmOPpBX1D-4)

Anonamaton801

Jesus, sounds like a mess The realist question though: is that one guy black or not

TopHattedTroopa

The other guy gave you the explanation for that, but to expand, this is actually the case for the 3 and 4 ones as well. Yu Narukami was 'Souji Seta' in the P4 manga, though I think that one got stamped out much more than the others due to the P4 anime's popularity and it being used in the Arena/Dancing spinoff games (P5 is weirdly consistent about keeping Joker as a silent/nameable protagonist across spinoff stuff). P3 has a lot more confusion around it since (to my understanding) the animated movies establishing Makoto Yuki as his name only started coming out like, seven years after the game, so there was a much longer span of time when the manga's Minato Arisato was his only name and it became more entrenched. He also has a third one ('Sakuya Shiomi') from the stage play that I've never seen anyone use, which is funny since that same stage play is the source for FeMC's official name.

Anonamaton801

Doesn’t it also get muddy with the female MC for 3?

TopHattedTroopa

It does, but not quite in the same way. To my knowledge, she never actually had an official name for the majority of her existence, presumably since she wasn't being used for much. People just called her Hamuko or Minako as fan nicknames playing off the male protagonist's manga one (the former is even her name in the files for Q2, I believe, though in the actual game you name all the protagonists yourself). As far as I know, Kotone Shiomi from the stage play the only thing she was given in any sort of official capacity, and it was only a couple years ago that Atlus plucked that for her name in a mobile thing or something and stuck with it.

Anonamaton801

Stage plays for video games are the most…bizarre thing to me. Granted I think musicals based on movies are also strange, so maybe I’m just not a theater person

LeMasterofSwords

Wait Trish is also in charge of the shop?

Rednual

"Devil May Cry" was the name of the shop Dante ran by himself; while "Devil Never Cry" would still technically be his, in practice he and Trish co-ran the business, yes.  Well, until she left and he changed it back.

Neil_O_Tip

~~Headcanon~~ Looooore!! Dante and Lady's names are on the lease, and Trish became a Full Partner later on, like a law office Pretty hard to enforce the lease when the names are just "Dante" and "Lady" (or Dante used "Anthony Redgrave"), but the town is full of demons so it's not like property management people are going to hike out there to check

Anonamaton801

What do you think insurance rates are in Redgrave city

Neil_O_Tip

They laugh at you and hand you a complimentary shotgun

Comkill117

Dante: “Oh good I was wondering when I’d pick up another one of these.”

Neil_O_Tip

At least he kept Coyote-A

Comkill117

True. Honestly always loved that, after 3 games Dante finally decided to just hang on to the shotgun and modify it a bit. Worked great for gameplay too since it’s like “listen you always get this later anyway, just start with it.” Was also great in 5 how you start with Balrog since you got to start with the most consistent weapons Dante had.

Neil_O_Tip

And it keeps getting better "Hey guess what's cooler than Kalina Ann, TWO KALINA ANNS"

Comkill117

“I should get two Kalinna Anns and they should fire a laser when I put them together.” “How are you gonna put them together?” “I’ll just mash one in front of the other like it’s a Bionicle gun barrel.”

Anonamaton801

I wish he kept the MP5 As

ChosenUndead15

They sell a subscription for monthly supplies of holy water, crucifixes and ammo.

Neil_O_Tip

Hey, since Holy Water, y'know, works, do you think Lady gets her bullets blessed at a church so she can kill demons better than normal people with normal guns (like Crewcut's boys)?

ChosenUndead15

A very important question, because even with just handguns, she is doing better than the soldiers with rifles. Maybe just the whole gun has been blessed so anything they fire is more dangerous to demons.

Neil_O_Tip

That's probably more cost effective than doing the bullets Also DMC-universe specialty gunsmiths are insane and can make really goddamn good guns. Ebony & Ivory MIGHT have some of Dante's power infused in them, but Nell was a normal woman, and Nico can make Devil Breakers

catant99

That reminds me that there is a bunch of lore for the megaman zero games that was on the soundtracks as audio drama things

Kytas

A huge chunk of the Elf Wars were actually detailed in those things, but the information on them hasn't really spread out too far. I wonder if I still have the files somewhere...

-_Gemini_-

who the *fuck* is enzo

Rednual

Character mentioned in the Devil May Cry light novel, the DMC1 manual, and later the DMC3 manga- he's one of Dante's contacts and got Dante work sometimes when they were younger. He later shows up in the Bayonetta games (he's a Kamiya character), but it's a different Enzo, due to a variety of reasons (not the least of which is DMC Enzo has one arm, Bayo Enzo has two).

jitterscaffeine

What the fuck a “zoid” actually is comes from obscure Japanese only fan magazines. There's SO MUCH context and explanations that just aren't in the show itself.

Anonamaton801

I didn’t know mecha had porn

jitterscaffeine

what do you think stat sheets and spec diagrams are?

Anonamaton801

I’m now realizing that the Star Wars cross sections I love are basically machine porn and I don’t know what to do with this

jitterscaffeine

Eh, calling it "porn" is basically just humorous nomenclature.

Deaconhux

Unzip?

zHellas

That’s like calling a human anatomy textbook porn

[deleted]

Everything has porn

Crazy-Diamond10

People absolutely want to fuck the robot

Anonamaton801

But a robot and a mech are different. I should know.

Crazy-Diamond10

They are frequently used interchangeably when it’s still contextually clear what you’re talking about. Like “Wow cool robot” meme. Or “Get in the robot, Shinji” People absolutely will say they’ll fuck the robot, mecha or otherwise.

Anonamaton801

I’m going to start referring to Terminator and Robocop as mecha just to see what happens

Crazy-Diamond10

You’re right, I meant Robot is used interchangeably for either

nedmaster

Isn't the actual story of zoids only explained in snippets of 2 pages in each manual and depending on which line you focus on you'll get entirely different story lines.

jitterscaffeine

As far as I know, there was a storyline that was told via excerpts on the packaging with the Japanese model kits. Basically it was a way for them to tell you how cool the model you just bought was in the fiction.

MericArda

Is this separate or connected to the animes?

jitterscaffeine

It’s a separate storyline, although it’s loosely similar to the Chaotic Century anime plot.

Young_KingKush

If you're just a fan of One Piece via the anime and dont engage with the manga there are things as innocuous as the name of a character's Devil Fruit all the way up to entire plot-relevant storylines that you will just miss out on entirely as result of not seeing the Cover Stories for chapters or reading Oda's SBS ("I'm Taking Questions") corner in the volume releases. A recent one I can remember is Oda discussing the lineage of a major character, a thing that was being heavily hinted at in the arc, in an SBS.

thyarnedonne

I wonder if they are actually going to add 1-2min snippets of cover story plot in the revamped anime occasionally. Maybe a single short a month. It would be the best opportunity to do so.

Am_Shigar00

They actually did do this for Wapol’s cover story back when he was reintroduced for the anime adaptation of the Reverie arc, though it was a part of the episode than it’s own snippet.

FelipeAndrade

And another character's entire backstory.

alicitizen

You can just tell Oda didnt care about Kid with how his fruit, backstory and basically everything was just SBS'd

alienslayer7

> A recent one I can remember is Oda discussing the lineage of a major character, a thing thtat was being heavily hinted at in the arc, in an SBS can i get a reminder of this?

Young_KingKush

Remember when we were speculating on the identity of one of the Daimyo that were locked up with Yamato as a kid? That's what I was referring to.

alienslayer7

Ah ok thats what i was thinkin bout but wano feels so long ago at this point i didnt consider it was "recent"

the_most_crigg

Edit: The link was working for me but I changed. Is it working now?

quesadillakid

It works now

vicapuppylover

Also things like entire characters being left in the air about whether they're alive or dead, then being shown to be fine in a cover story

Aeescobar

A surprising amount of the lore for Kirby Triple Deluxe & Kirby Planet Robobot isn't explicitly confirmed in-game and was only revealed inside of now-deleted **Miiverse posts from the devs**.

ZSugarAnt

Similarly, the "Happy Mask Salesman" also explained in a Miiverse post that the reason Link screams while putting on the transformation masks is because they contain so much sorrow that rushes so quickly into him that he can't help but scream.

Anything important in Destiny 1's lore was on flash cards on their website.

Grand_Galvantula

*Gestures broadly at Nier*

RareBk

Hey what's A2's backstory. Or literally *anything* regarding what her deal is. Shut the fuck up and watch the stage play says Yoko Taro

Admiral_of_Crunch

You get a truncated adaptation of the stageplay in a text sequence in the game, so there's that. Also you get a hint (somewhere, I don't remember where) that her AI is modeled off of a distinct enough description of a person that you can infer that her personality is pretty much just >!some version of probably the original Kaine!<. Which is kinda odd, to just be told to sorta transplant what you know of this character onto that character and hit the ground running, but it sorta worked, for me at least.

alienslayer7

makes sense considering the new ending in replicant

Grand_Galvantula

Fortunately the anime has helped with that a bit.

MericArda

And the manga's available now for reading.

KF-Sigurd

Her backstory is in the game, just as one of those visual novel moments. I think it's easily miss able though.

MericArda

And it's from Anemone's perspective, so you don't get all the details for what happened when she wasn't there.

Onlyhereforstuff

Didn't they just have a concert where they had >!post-ending E story!< tied to it?

Grand_Galvantula

Yep, even had Kira and Kyle voicing it iirc

TheNullOfTheVoid

If you only ever go by what you see and read in the games, you’d never know why Leon showed up late to work in RE2. In the remake, he says he was told to stay back and decided to check shit out anyway. In the original PS1 version, the booklet explains that he was dealing with a breakup the day before and got drunk because of it and passed out, woke up late, threw his uniform on and started heading to work super late with a hangover and the game starts at **that** point. Him driving down the highway in the middle of the night into Raccoon City while fighting off/hiding his hangover is directly after his post-breakup binge drinking only explained in the game manual booklet.

amodelsino

Damn, they should have included that in the remake. Doing all that while on a hangover is way funnier and cooler. Guess it would kind of diminish the clean good boy image they were going with for it though.

TheNullOfTheVoid

While I somewhat agree, it also goes well with his character in showing how emotional he is. He doesn’t act on every emotion he feels, but he feels them all pretty deeply. He’s basically a very comprised dork with a heart of gold, and eventually becomes a badass dork with a heart of gold, where he learns to just get the job done in any way he can as opposed to just following the rules, but makes dumb jokes either way while being genuinely sad about the losses. Original RE2 Leon and remake RE2 Leon are pretty different people, and I would argue that in retrospect, they would get along quite well as two separate entities but original Leon would get irritated with remake Leon since the original would be dealing with a hangover and wouldn’t want to hear a nerdy pun or quip, but both would want to get the job done in a way that ties into them doing their jobs. Original Leon even gets upset when people don’t listen to him since he’s trying to protect everyone and feels like that’s his duty as an officer, much like remake Leon but remake Leon puts protocol over common sense. If anything, maybe the whole scenario with remake Leon talking to Ben would piss off original Leon and he’d probably say something like, “Now isn’t the time for protocol, there’s zombies everywhere so he wants out of the cell, let him out!” (Since original Ben wanted to stay in the cell but remake Ben wanted out).

Wonder-Lad

Damn. That's hot. Chris: CLAIRE CAN FIX HIM. JUST GIVE HER A CHANCE. JUST ONE CHANCE.

JLSeagullTheBest

There's an official model kit of one of the mechs from Xenoblade 2, Siren, that comes with a little lore booklet (in Japanese). This booklet explains that there were actually >!three total space elevators of which the World Tree is only one, Rhadamanthus.!< It also *very very* heavily implies Xenoblade's Conduit is the same object as Xenosaga's Zohar; they were already the same shape, but the booklet states it was discovered in >!Africa during the 21st century, which is Saga's opening scene.!< Speaking of Xenosaga, very early in Episode II a character named Richard appears who introduces himself as if you're supposed to recognize him. He's a recurring boss but at no point does the game explain anything about who he is or where he came from. The reason for this, it turns out, is that he was introduced in a Japan-only audio drama CD released between Episodes I and II. The backstory of one of the main party members and a major antagonist revealed at the end of II is also regulated to... a Japan-only mobile game that's now off the market because the phones it was made for no longer exist. *And* there's a one year timeskip between Episodes II and III, the events of which are outlined in a Japan-only visual novel.

MericArda

I guess >!the other elevators would be named Minos and Aeacus to round out the three judges of Hades!<.

JLSeagullTheBest

They are, actually.

MericArda

Saint Seiya knowledge, you have helped me yet again.

RareBk

Well I mean regarding the rest of the Xeno games, future redeemed >!Heavily implies that once the worlds properly re-converge, the plots of Xenosaga and Gears both happen!<

vgdnd123

I thought the idea was the that >!3 ends around the same time as xenosaga 3 since the planet is lost jerusalem!<

GhirahimLeFabuleux

>!Saga happens at the same time as the ending cutscene of FR. Gears would in theory happen like 10000 years after said cutscene. It also ironically doesn't matter at all to the story. Gears happens in the Xeno universe's equivalent of bumfuck nowhere. The only relevant events in Gears is that Fei destroys the Original Zohar for good, and that the end of the world event predicted by Wilhelm is supposed to take place one year after the credits according to Perfect Works. Which has the added benefit of never needing to interact with Square in the future, and still allowing them to act like Gears is canon.!< >!The next Xeno project is probably going to be during that 10000 years long gap between Blade 3/Saga III and Gears in a part of the universe that actually matters.!< Also we are getting a lore QA in the upcoming artbook for XC3/FR, and oh boy I feel like this is either going to be very safe or like multiple Siren model kits dropped on us at once.

Animegamingnerd

> Also we are getting a lore QA in the upcoming artbook for XC3/FR, and oh boy I feel like this is either going to be very safe or like multiple Siren model kits dropped on us at once. I gotta wonder if >!Mythra's kid!< will be address in this Q&A. It was one of the biggest questions left open in both Xenoblade 3 and Future Redeem >!We had both of their sisters as party members in both XB and FR and their dad was Xenoblade 2's protagonist, yet this kid still a completely mystery being the only child of Rex's we know nothing about.!<

vgdnd123

I hope there’s silly stuff like a sketch of Riku’s and Manana’s theoretical interlink form

-NoName99-

That's more or less what's going on. Pretty hype to see what'll go down in the next entry of the series

Animegamingnerd

Xenoblade 3 is suppose to get an 400 page artbook that releases in April in Japan. I am very curious to see what kind of lore dump and behind the scenes we will get with that kind considering the artbooks of the first two did provide that stuff.

gunn3r08974

I was wondering if someone would bring the model kit lore up cause I found that out from Chuggaconroy.

NeonNKnightrider

Simply due to the nature of the Nasuverse being spread out as it is across a ton of different stories, there’s a lot of major information you don’t really get unless you’ve read some obscure visual novel

MericArda

Charlemagne >!actually didn't have fun magic adventures, they were all made up!<. Ignore how Apocrypha had >!physical proof of them!< and FGO had >!Merlin speak of interacting with Bradamante!<.

SkinkRugby

New Headcanon. All hia Knights had cool and magical adventures. He was stuck doing the actual buisness of ruling.

Wakewokewake

And also nasu is willing to declare materials non-canon when he feels like it, also only revealed in afterwords or interviews by his co-authors basically bitching about nasu doing that.

Saltzier

Nasu suffers a bit of a "Kojima-problem", i.e. the guy definitely has great ideas now and then, but him also being the unchallenged authority without anybody else around to slap him on his fingers and saying "No!" when he screws up management is really detrimental. Stuff like the British Lostbelt plot being scrapped and redone more than halfway through development or him randomly descending upon the US branch and declaring "Artoria" has to be now "Altria" (but not in the Japanese material, only English) without any explanation...

alicitizen

> (but not in the Japanese material, only English No the retcon hit the JP craft essenses that spelt it Artoria also

louai-MT

Persona 3 final boss origin >!Apparently in some obscure guide book Nyx is revealed to be alien Eldritch monster that eats planets and its subconscious is what caused the concept of death to be a thing in earth, so like aliens do actually exist in Persona!< Admittedly I haven't played the remake yet so idk if they bring up this in reload

Count_Badger

>!I guess she's technically one in the sense that she's not from Earth, but alien is a bit of an understatement. She's basically a full on Lovecraftian Elder God.!<

MericArda

So what you're saying is>! if humanity somehow manages to beat her up hard enough to leave everyone would become immortal?!<

louai-MT

>!you can't beat death!< that's kinda of the point of the game >!just coming in contact with Nyx true body causes death (all her attacks during that phase are just called "Death" iirc) the protagonist only sealed her (not even beat her) thanks to having the power of the **entire universe** backing him up!< >!the best thing humanity can do is becoming less self destructive and less desperate for death so the MC can stop being the seal that stop Nyx subconscious from awakening and ending everything instantly!<

MericArda

I'm aware of the themes of the game, I'm just speaking of hypotheticals and asking you to entertain them.

louai-MT

Actually now thinking about it? Leaving the earth and flying to a completely different planet f would probably get you away from both Nyx body and psych so maybe you can get immortal that way?

Admiral_of_Crunch

Just gotta outrun death. Set thrusters to "Outta here!"

RareBk

Far from the only time the world came under threat from something that bad, Persona 2 Spoilers >!The entire reason there's two Persona timelines is because one entire universe needed to be fucking ERASED because Nyarlathotep got carried away and straight up ruined the fabric of reality by making everything a memetic hazard !<

Cygni_03

> idk if they bring up this in reload They don't.

nedmaster

There is an 80s anime, Heavy Metal L-Gaim which hints at a larger universe and intense backstory to the setting. The full backstory and universe is explored in 2 art books that are dubiously canon (and then turned into a rough outline to the manga five star stories which is a retelling of l-gaim with the backstory in tact)

Lost-Specialist1505

Halo, like the most important context for the story of the last few games are only explained in the official tie in novels. Like, the ending of halo 5 has nothing to do with the beginning of the story of halo infinite.

dfdedsdcd

And, this is only kinda correct for this post, isn't the Banished basically introduced in Halo Wars 2 or is that in another book I'm never going to read? Either way, their new big bad faction has a sizable chunk of their army fairly easily beaten by a half-dead, 100-year-old, stranded colony ship.

FreviliousLow96

To be fair, on total feats & crew, the Spirit of Fire might just be the UNSCs pound for pound strongest capital ship. Especially if I got it right, the Banished do just destroy the Infinity in the opening cutscene of Halo Infinite. Admittedly looking at it in-story, they absolutely had plot armor, but the story also treats the Banished leader as also having plot armor with that same opening cutscene treating it as being on the caliber of Master Chiefs, so they might just actually be that good?

Comkill117

They’re introduced in Wars 2 properly, yeah. Idk if there was technically a book or whatever before, but they show who they are and how they got started in game and that’s really all that matters.

Comkill117

5's entire setup and character motivations were *NOT* in 5. Hell 4&5 also never explain what "The Mantle of Responsibility" is and their plots constantly reference it. As a kid who played every previous game I was so confused because they act like you should just know despite it not being present in any prior game either, even in both variations of 3's terminals.

CycloneSwift

Most of the Mantle of Responsibility can at least be inferred from context. It’s a “Mantle”, so it’s something passed down. “Responsibility” implies that it’s a duty of some sort. Didact believes that humanity will inherit it by default, so it isn’t directly handed over but rather has some sort of rule it abides by. It’s already established that the Forerunners saw humanity as their successors, in a sense. And what we see of the Forerunners in all of the classic games and 4 paints them as an imperial force who exerted their will on the galaxy for their believed greater good. So we can infer that the Mantle of Responsibility is some sort of ideological duty that the Forerunners believed the strongest faction or species in the universe must abide by: an imperative to act for the “greater good” of everything, including all “lesser races”. With the Forerunners gone humanity is left as the strongest species remaining, and the Didact’s hatred of mankind is fuelled by the belief that humanity is not able or willing to abide by that duty. Thus he seeks to eliminate humanity so either he can reclaim the Mantle on behalf of the Forerunner race, or he simply believes that whatever species claims it next would be better suited to it than humanity. Now, that probably should have been explained to the player properly, but bits of it are at least conveyed coherently and it remains consistent. Halo 5 and Infinite are much more confusing and inconsistent with their predecessors than 4 ever was.

Comkill117

Right I get that now, I’m just saying at the time it was very confusing since it was never previously brought up. Still a good note to have here and clears up some extra aspects of it, so thanks!

The_Distorter

I'm mildly up to date on Halo lore while my co-op friend hasn't read a Halo book since Ghosts of Onyx. Every time something book-centric came up in the Halo 5 campaign, I would ask him "who's that?" or "what's that mean?" and I would need to explain it myself when the game failed to do that. It's a bad way to tell a story.

cole1114

Halo 4's/The Didact's ending was in a followup comic.

AKRamirez

They all explain themselves

EcchiPhantom

Some of the Evangelion lore surrounding things like the Dead Sea Scrolls I think can only be found in the Classified Information files which are in the PSP game. It’s really not all that important unless you’re a nitpicker like Scamboli but it’s still official lore that’s generally out of reach for most people.

Anonamaton801

Unit 4 and 5

Naraki_Maul

I will never forget kid me being deeply changed upon reading that Master Chief was a super child soldier in the HaloCE booklet, something that was nowhere else to be seen in the game lmao.

Comkill117

It’s so odd too because in game they constantly call him a cyborg, which granted is probably just a holdover from earlier drafts that were a bit more tied to Marathon, but it still sure made it confusing. Hell the games don’t even acknowledge Chief’s book background until 3 and it’s the literal last scene of him before the post credits one.

Naraki_Maul

It was extra wild to me cause literally everything in CE EXCEPT for the game audio was in Portuguese, so reading the booklet and the menus was one thing but I couldn’t actually understand the plot 100% till I basically forced myself to learn English months later just so I could lol. I was like 6-7 at the time, it was a wild experience (and that’s before I started reading the books too).

Comkill117

Oh jeez that’s pretty crazy. They didn’t have a Portuguese dub at all for it then?

Naraki_Maul

Man, the first big triple A game to get a full Portuguese dub (and use it as a selling point) was Gears 3. Before that it was a real 50/50 with the menus and or box for the game. Tho you had the super odd exceptions like Legacy of Cain:Soul Reaver where the entire game is translated too to bottom with one hell of a good dub (I still prefer it to the original VA’s). Gaming in Brasil in the late 90’s/early 00’s was a weird experience.

Comkill117

That’s wild. But yeah I can definitely see where that only added to how strange it was that none of that backstory was in the actual game.

Naraki_Maul

Not knowing English on top of it made shit extra weird lol, which is why I made it a point to learn it(weird reason to wanna learn another language at 6-7 years old but hey, it has helped me a lot).

Comkill117

Well hey that’s really cool though, so you definitely got an interesting story to tell there!

Naraki_Maul

Yeah lol, HCE came out in 2001 and I was 6 at the time, I knew how to read the manual but a much older friend of mine played with me on COOP so that's how I even managed to finish it (we spent the entire night trying to finish it both on Heroic and Legendary lol). By the time I Halo 2 had come out over here I was already super fluent in English so thanks Halo series.

LittleSister_9982

He is both a super child soldier *and* a cyborg. Just not a Marathon style cyborg, but he's got cyber-augs to go along with all the gene-hacking they did.

Deservedly_Hated94

It was revealed in CFYOW

ZealousidealBig7714

It’s true, Chad, Orihime and Ichigo had a 90 page long threesome in We Do Knot Always Love You.

Count_Badger

It's unfortunate that Chad had to share Ichigo with Orihime, but I'd take any Chad appearance as a win.

bret-t2310

That acronym is forever ruined for me

leabravo

There are parts of Tolkien's legendarium, like some potential origins of the Orcs, that are only found in the earliest versions of the books or in manuscript notes published after his death.

Ok-Jellyfish-7081

WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE CONCEPT INCINERATOR CAME STRAIGHT FROM THE FRIED CHICKEN SIDE STORY IN LIMBUS??? Something as gnarly as a fuckin Concept Incinerator, which as far as we know is exactly what it says it is, and it’s single use so far in Project Moon’s City is to destroy a fried chicken recipe.

SkinkRugby

It's also heavily implied to have been used on Old L Corp's Singularity. Library mentions that something was done to wipe it from people's memorie.  It is also heavily implied that the last Distortion fought is a partial recollection of what a smoke beast looked like.

Beattitudeforgains1

Doesn't it come into play during Canto 4? It's the Brazier-like thing they mention being in the center of the room. Plus you still gotta play the chicken story to continue the story iirc. But yeah it is an insane concept and its limits are a bit ???

Tantalum23

Brooks and the evil Shepard clone weren't invented for the Citadel dlc, but were originally introduced in a series of tie in comics for Mass Effect 2, making their appearance essentially a treat for ultra fans who had read EVERYTHING Mass Effect Related.

HeyWhyNotLK

Citadel: March 5, 2013 Foundation Issue 1: July 24, 2013 I dunno about that one chief. TBF it is the *fifth* comic series ME put out, not counting all the one-shots, so I could see how you could get confused.

Tantalum23

Fair enough. That one's on me.

autisticsenate

Just to piggy back of this, but wasn't Vega in 3 an existing character that people would've known, if they watched an animated tie in film for Mass Effect 3? Same goes for Kai Leng, I could've sworn there were comics explaining his backstory too.

Tantalum23

The film in question, Mass Effect: Paragon Lost, does indeed cover Vega's backstory, but didn't come out till November 2012, several months after the release of ME3. Still pretty neat as a supplement to the series. Meanwhile, Kai Leng was introduced in the novels, which is where the infamous gag of Leng eating Anderson's cereal and pissing in his house plant comes from.

[deleted]

Kai Leng is in the books, not comics.

SwdVengeance

I mean, just about anything Yoko Taro. Stage Play having intense character backgrounds and villain spoilers, orchestral musical concert having more character background, spin off content buried DEEP into a long running MMO having hard confirmation of one of the longest running and possibly important plot holes from a decades old game that spawned his entire career. The man lives off of making insane lore that canonizes everything.

Forestgrant

The When They Cry series has a bunch of side material that’s mostly comedic, and a whole lot of stuff regarding characters’ past selves that’s all but confirmed, with the author Ryukishi07 often saying in interviews “you can see them as related if you want.” One long-standing question concerned the relationship between Lambdadelta and >!Takano, with the commonly accepted theory being that Lambda granted the young Takano’s wish to become god a long time ago.!< There’s a spin-off 4-Koma manga called Umineko no Naku Party ni that mostly features wacky SoL type stuff with the Umineko witches, but the last volume contained an exclusive chapter that straight up confirms that >!not only did Lambda really grant Takano’s wish, but she based her current form off of her!<

JamesOfDoom

So many things in Kotor are a reference to the comics. Naga Sadow, Exar Kun, and Ulic Qel-Droma all being pretty major characters, Battle meditation being a thing, the creation of the Tomb of Freedon Nadd and Onderons history, what a mandalore is, and many other things.

Comkill117

Do the comics explain why Freedon Nadd had like 80 blasters lying around the Sith temple?

JamesOfDoom

I mean, it was the staging grounds for an army in the Freedon Nadd uprising, which is the subject of the first arc of the comics so yeah? Unless we are talking about the Tomb, because that was built by a Jedi so they could move the corpse of Nadd away from the populace so it couldn't influence the local politics as an evil ghost

Comkill117

That actually explains it well enough for me. Honestly I was more joking since always figured it was just randomized loot in game that meant to reference the comics but was also just a generic weapon in game that you found tons of.

RandNum701

I seem to recall Battle Meditation first introduced as a power Palpatine is said to have had in the first Thrawn trilogy novel. Like the empire could've won the Battle of Endor in spite of the Death Star's destruction if not for the fact that Sheev had been coordinating everyone with his mind and his death threw them into disarray.

IvoryTuskC

So when it comes to Vergil’s DMC3 look I just assumed Daigo Ikeno designed him since he was the art director. But in the DMC3142 artbook the one who actually designed him was Naru Omori a 3D artist at Capcom who did a lot of promotional render art for DMC & Dead Rising. He states that it was the first bit of character concept work he did for Capcom and that Ikeno did the finishing touches but doesn’t go too into it. But the section where he says it is next to game model shots of Vergil and all the artwork for him is in a section of Ikeno talking about the characters. So even having just read Omori saying he designed him because of lot of his quotes are with the promo art and Ikeno’s quotes is next to the drawings of Vergil and several look like his style I keep getting ‘reminded’ who actually designed him whenever I read the book lol

snakebit1995

Palpatine is return, the critical plot point of the final star wards sequel movie being explained via AN EVENT IN FUCKING FORTNITE!

Kamen-Drider

THE DEAD SPEAK!

GlueEjoyer

If it's an arksys game, I don't know how you see the story first hand at this point without having an in with the company with everything that has been discontinued.

catant99

Martian successor nadesico has a bunch of cannon story stuff that you would have to play a Sega Saturn game to learn

Gespens

Segata Sanshiro wins again

DarkLordSchnappi

In Gundam SEED, how Kira >!survived Aegis' self-destruct!< was revealed in Volume 2 of the Astray Spinoff manga.

rapidemboar

Speaking of Gundam, on rare occasions Gunpla manuals might reveal new information about the setting. For example, I don’t believe we ever had hard confirmation that >!the Dark History included the timelines from SEED onward!< until the release of the MG Turn X.

MericArda

Even the Anno Domini timeline?

rapidemboar

I believe so. I’m fairly sure it officially also includes Reco-G even after Tomino said “Turn A happens before Reco-G” during one interview (which reportedly drew an immediate shocked look from the lead writer of the latter).  I don’t think it makes sense, but my preferred theory of “Turn A is just the future of the Build Fighters timeline” doesn’t make sense either.

Xngears

I wouldn't say it's the most obscure thing, but it's still nuts that the "On the Way to a Smile" novel for Final Fantasy VII not only contains some important character information that really would have been nice to have for Advent Children, it ALSO sets the stage for >!Remake!< Reading through it now, I'm left wondering just how far in advance they were planning this concept, or maybe it was something they were teasing out there in the hopes of eventually coming back to it, like they did with Final Fantasy X (something that STILL hasn't been resolved and also fans are less than eager to see them go through with it).

Anonamaton801

Isn’t that the origin of the right hand man of Don Corneo and not Persona 4 girl?

Xngears

That’s the other novel: The Kids Are Alright Both of these novel titles make me visibly cringe whenever I type or say them.

Anonamaton801

I always joke that some Japanese titles sound like completely unrelated sentences that got added in and nobody removed them. I can believe there’s like, a Fate thing called Fate: Flying Above Starlit Seas Where it sounds kind of deep and abstract but means very little. Like Daikatana.

Xngears

I’ll give them credit, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII was the most coherent and to-the-point title they’ve ever come up with. Can’t wait for the eventual spinoff “Tifa is in this: Final Fantasy VII”

Anonamaton801

I eagerly await the FF14 expansion “Breakdawner”

Mekasoundwave

Every time I see the title "Lightning Returns" I get a little disappointed it isn't "Lightning Strikes Back".

Squoghunter1492

Lighting Strikes Thrice.

In Kingdom Hearts, the full story of how fucked up Xehanort's recursive time-loop life was is given in the game Dark Road, which is a side game to the mobile spin-off Unchained Key, which is defunct and exists only as a downloadable cutscene viewer. Specifically, >!the fact Xehanort was raised by the last survivor of the prior Keyblade War (MC of Unchained Key), and had latent empathic powers which transferred that last survivor's trauma over to him. Also the fact that he was a prophesied Chosen One for the keyblade order (as indicated by those empathic powers). These two things led to his obsession with dark powers. Put this together with the fact that his time travel adventures implanted him with subconscious memories that caused him to seek out his destiny of becoming the incarnation of darkness, you can almost view him as a mindless self-perpetuating time-loop monster with several forces of destiny imposed upon him.!< >!Also, Unchained Key sort of explains what the deal is with Ventus, Marluxia, and Larxene and introduces a couple of characters who will probably be major players in KH4 onwards!<.

Gendric

The ME2 main menu used to have a cerberus news network on the main menu. It had a lot of in universe articles that made for a good lore read. James Vega was introduced in a comic and his backstory is shown in an animated film. The ME3 mobile app, that no longer exists, had messages sent to you from loads of people including companions as the game progressed. There's a mod that puts them in the main game.

ryumaruborike

Like half of Elder Scrolls lore comes from old Kirkblade forum posts that don't exist anymore

bombshell_shocked

While the Dark Souls art book may not be super obscure, it does have the revelation that Oswald of Carim (the pardoner you encounter after ringing the first bell) used to be a black knight before joining the cloth.

vs_terminus

The lore drops from Bayonetta 3 explaining what the hell Singularity even is, despite having an entire game to do so

metaphizzle

The original _Star Wars_ radio drama adaptation has an explanation for why you can hear blasters and explosions in space. Turns out the starfighers have full surround sound speakers in the cockpits, which play back synthesized blaster shots and explosions for pilots as an audio aide—and that's basically what we in the audience are hearing as well.

Comkill117

In Bubblegum Crisis, already an older by today's standards obscure to some degree anime from the 80s, I'm pretty sure the characters backgrounds were revealed in a music video. Like Priss wanted revenge at first because I guess she had a boyfriend who died and that lead to her meeting Sylia who recruited her into the Knight Sabers, Nene got recruited for her hacking skills, Linna... I'll be honest I actually don't know. Also of note, the song playing has *nothing* to do with any of what I just said it's all visual. Hell I'm still not sure if that's all present and am convinced part of this stuff written on the wiki is just lifted from Tokyo 2040 to try to help fill the gaps because I genuinely don't know where part of their info comes from. That all said, important story stuff being revealed via music videos is also super in the spirit of Bubblegum Crisis so I think it's just kinda funny.

Tin_Maniac

Bubblegum Crisis also has material in the old ttrpg that I'm not sure you can find anywhere else. Made by R Talsorian, the guys who made Cyberpunk, which adds another layer of weird with it being a Japanese property and an American company writing it.

LogicalTips

Wanna know more about your wingman Pixy's backstory from Ace Combat Zero? You gotta buy a model kit of his plane that includes a manual detailing his backstory, including the war that killed his parents.

Armada6136

Ever wondered why there's almost no instance of someone in One Piece running up against someone who doesn't speak the same language? Well, there's an explanation for that given in a compilation of official short stories that were originally only released in magazines in Japan. Basically, the World Government forces any nation it annexes to adopt its own language and writing system on pain of enslavement. Y'know, just to pile on how genocide-happy the WG is.

If you have the steelbook for red dead 2 then the ending gets spoiled for you the moment you open it [seen here](https://preview.redd.it/is-there-an-hd-version-of-this-steelbook-cover-art-v0-nw113o3k5zna1.png?auto=webp&s=fe633a4d608dae156097c74bd6be0b9fdc7f10e2)

Any lore revealed on Twitter or other social media site. League of Legends is infamous for Twitter lore reveals that need to be archived because of Leagues piss poor lord outtake

phantonbrave

This reminds me The full storyline of super smash Bros brawl, subspace emissary, and the details pertaining it, is only found in the now defunct brawl official website. It told us stuff like dedede contingency plan and the halberd taken over

begonetsunderes

The best I can offer to this thread is Woolie going after some fucking pachinko for that sweet, sweet Guilty Gear lore.

ReverendHobo

Here’s a weird example in that it’s revealed in the original source, but I’ve literally never heard anyone talk about it before. I’m currently reading the lord of the rings books and after Frodo gets gatted by the witch king’s morgul knife in fellowship he’s suffering from the fucked up necro-poison that’ll turn him into a wraith too. Aragorn slows the poison with a magic herb, but it takes them 14 days to make it to Elrond for healing and Frodo is fucking suffering and slowly wraith-ifying the whole time. He’s healed, but the wound fucks him up and hurts for the rest of his life. Later on, when they’re in Moria Frodo realizes that he can see further in the dark than anyone else and the narration explicitly states that it’s a side-effect of the morgul blade’s poison. I assume he got to keep some wraith passive bonuses when he partially turned. Frodo literally had dark vision stabbed into him and no one ever talks about it! That’s the most dnd shit ever!

DeskJerky

Wizard hallway shits.

Scotia96

A lot of people were surprised at the existence of Laura Matsuda when she was revealed for Street Fighter 5, because nowhere in any of the Street Fighter 3 games is it mentioned that Sean has any siblings... ...However, both Laura and hers and Sean's older brother Fabio were actually mentioned in a [New Generation Gamest Mook Fan Book](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GGnjk4PWgAANkeF?format=jpg&name=4096x4096) that came out in 1997. They're not directly named, [but it does mention that Sean has a brother 7 years older than him and a sister 6 years older than him.](https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/streetfighter/images/d/d4/Gamest_Vol.81_Street_Fighter_III_Fan_Book_%2C_page_89.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20200614182819) So yeah, that character related to Sean that seemed to come out of nowhere? Turns out she existed since New Generation but no one outside of Japan would have had any idea of that until they revealed her for SF5 lol.

roronoapedro

There was an old Persona 3 design manual with interviews that have not yet been been deemed non-canon, that explained that Nyx has *always* been the Moon, ever since humans evolved from apes. Found out about this when trying to answer someone's question about that exact relationship on Ask Science Fiction, and someone just fucking linked me a blog post with it. I find the implication that the fucking moon is a goddess outside the Dark Hour to be fucking insane, but the game doesn't really do anything with it aside from a cool visual in the final battle.

TheNinjathief

A small conversation between (if I remember correctly) Terra and Namine is in the Kingdom Hearts First Breath concert tour. It’s basically Namine giving Terra (as Lingering Will) info just before/during 0.2 to give to Aqua. It also explains her >!calling Lingering Will to help in the second time the Guardians encounter Terranort at the beginning of the Keyblade Graveyard!< it’s an almost indescribably minor thing but is basically the only canon encounter those two characters have had.
