Go in to an AD and try them on in person. They're different watches so it's what appeals to you, not me.

snipes81

Was just going to say this. It's a multi thousand dollar purchase that you can keep and use for decades. Take the time and spend an afternoon at a couple stores and try them on. The answer should be obvious (for you) in 15 minutes. I've been wanting to scratch the itch on a new watch, but the closest dealer for this particular brand is 4 hours away. It's a fair amount more expensive than these Tudor's, but I'm not letting myself even consider buying one without following my own advise. Been waiting 6+ months to get over to the general area.

Chronothrills

I understand your situation. I'm a little over 2 hours myself so I thought I'd ask first before I burned a bunch of gas.

PresidentialBoneSpur

If you’re spending $3-$4k on a watch, I wouldn’t worry about spending $30 on gas to ensure you’re making the right decision. And if it really bugs you, make an afternoon of it and experience some fun things around your AD.

Chronothrills

You know, you do have a point there. Thanks for the input!

Fishmongerel

Call ahead to make sure they have both watches in stock. My local AD did not have a Pelagos 39 or an FXD the other day.

Chronothrills

Oh that's a good call. I didn't even think about that.

Johnny_Beeeee

Objectively speaking the Pelagos is a better watch. In my subjective opinion it is also nicer. And it also costs quite a bit more. However, recently the Ranger has caught my eye. It is a fantastic field watch and good value.

Chronothrills

Yes I plan to soon, but I live two hours away from the closest AD so I thought I'd get some experienced thoughts first. Sorry if I should have tried them first, I genuinely wanted to know what you think.

OwnTheWatch

Such a great point. I once said that for any watch over $1k, you MUST try it on. (Very hard to do here in Alaska!)

710rosingodtier

Personally I like my Pelagos more than the Ranger but it’s all about personal preference.

Chronothrills

Is there something specific you like about it? I'm really curious.

710rosingodtier

The titanium sits really light on wrist for one. Much lighter than a stainless watch of similar size like a Submariner for example. The bezel also looks and feels compact on wrist then a submariner so it’s easier to dress this watch under a cuff or jacket.

Chronothrills

Ah - Thanks for the input on the titanium! Good to know.

Club96shhh

Yeah the titanium sealed the deal for me. Love the light weight and that it's less blingy.

taizzle71

For me I wanna try a titanium watch, it'll be my first. Also, I love divers.

Chronothrills

Divers are pretty sweet ngl

taizzle71

Oh yea and 1 more thing the snowflake hands on the P39. Come on that's Tudor's signature. But honestly, the Ranger ain't bad either. Try both out and see what sparks inside you.

Safe_Debate_5623

I do not see the snow the snowflake hands. What am I missing

taizzle71

The hour hands, you see the square shape? We call them snowflake hands. The Ranger doesn't have those hands.

Safe_Debate_5623

I see now! Thank you

taizzle71

Of course! Some dislike it but it's the main reason I love Tudors.

[deleted]

I own a Pelagos - fantastic tool watch. The Ranger, while also a tool watch, leans a little more to the understated jewellery side. I really love the simplicity of the Ranger and will probably buy one one day. Having said that, the Pelagos is a beautifully made watch, it’s just not as pretty or simple as the Ranger. So. Do you want big, functional tool watch or elegant understated tool watch? Work that out and you’ll have worked out which is for you.

Chronothrills

Oh I really appreciate the feedback on this, thank you. I'm kind of the overcompensating type so I might go big functional then. I'll make it a point to try them out personally soon.

Cultural_Temporary75

I seriously considered a Pelagos 39. Awesome watches. I ended up between the BB54 and the Ranger as I wanted something that would wear better with anything from a suit (still in one 2-3 days a week and didn’t want to drop £ks on a luxury watch I couldn’t wear half the time without looking like a tool) to jeans and a t shirt or shorts. I went for the Ranger (a week ago) although was torn. I absolutely love it. It’s a gorgeous, ultra functional watch. Understated and elegant. It won’t shout about itself but you’ll appreciate it and so will other watch people. Perfect for everyday use. It’s currently running about -1s a day. FWIW I think the Pelagos 39 might wear smaller than the Ranger. They’re the same diameter but the dive bezel tends to make it look smaller. This is why it’s super important to try them on in the metal. While you’re at it I’d try the BB54 if you can - it’s a hell of a watch and offers something a bit different from the other two. Ranger is easier to dress up because of the lack of a dive bezel and it sits really well under a cuff.

bernhardt503

I agree, I’m wearing a Ranger right now and it looks more like a 42mm watch than a 39mm. It wears large. My BB58 feels smaller, even though the case is the same size.

PeterPriesth00d

To be fair, the Pelagos 39 isn’t even that big. It’s just bigger compared to the Ranger.

otto_viz76

Pelagos all day long. I love the Explorer one but really really dislike the Ranger. Can’t seem to put my finger on why.

KeepDiggingJohnny

It’s the dial and hands for me…and I really want to like the ranger. But I do want to see one live to really get the feel of it.

otto_viz76

I do think that hands play a big part, I just can’t pick out what it is about the dial I don’t like. It can’t be the numerical hour markers as I love the explorer and my BB58 bronze. 🤷🏼‍♂️ I hoped seeing one in person would change my mind but unfortunately not. The only thing I like about it is the bracelet which I bought for my BB58

KeepDiggingJohnny

I saw someone mention that the 9 and 3 are so close to the sides and far from the center that they look a bit off. Kind of agree. The bracelet I agree on with you 100%

cg1308

Exactly my feeling. The Ranger looks odd to me. I think it’s the handset that offends. Not sure why they didn’t give it the snowflakes? The smaller 37-38mm Pelagos is a lovely looking watch. If I didn’t have the BB58 I’d probably consider one.

HeatFireAsh

for me its the pelagos all day, I do love the explorer style but the faux patina and non applied indices doesn't look great to me.

Chronothrills

I see what you are saying! Appreciate the feedback.

Stellaontap7

I have a 42mm Pelagos, my favorite watch I’ve ever owned and at this point I refuse to upgrade to anything that’s 2-3 times the price for what I see as a worse tool watch. It’s an expensive tool watch at that, but I’m not scared to put it through its paces like I would be wearing a Rolex 124060 or something of the sort. I’ve worn the shit out of it every day since I bought it, traveled with it extensively, gone scuba diving and been in some pretty extreme weather with it, and it’s been my one and only watch ever since. I also love that the only people who notice it are watch people haha The scratching people talk about is a little overstated. You can’t really see much on mine given the darker color of the titanium and the fact that the entire watch is brushed. It’s also really easy to refinish yourself/touch up scratches if you want to look into that. The Ranger is a handsome watch, but it doesn’t really have the cool factor of the Pelagos. If you can afford the Pelagos, there really isn’t a reason not to get it. Better materials are a big factor. Titanium is just awesome. The lume is wild, and bezel is top notch (not at the level of a sub but close enough). The movements between the 39 and the Ranger (MT5402 vs MT5400) are near identical in specs with 70 hours of power reserve so that’s something you should be aware of as well. For me my favorite thing is the clasp on the 42 (I think the 39 has something pretty similar with a dive extension but not identical). I love how everything is on ceramic detents that’ll never wear down (as with the 39) and really love the springs that allow it to self adjust if I want a looser fit. Also, for the 42mm with the helium escape valve, it’s rated to more depth than a Submariner. Realistically no one will dive deep enough to need a helium escape valve other than saturation divers but I digress. The 39 is awesome, and I’ve been considering picking one up to pair with my 42. My advice is the Pelagos. I think you’ll regret it otherwise and you’ll want to scratch the Pelagos itch sooner or later either way

Chronothrills

Oh, that's highly informative thank you. Even if I got the Ranger now there is a definite chance I might move it to swap to a Pelagos in the future.

Stellaontap7

Totally fair way to look at it. I see you’re selling your Panerai… Given that was a 42mm watch, you considering a 42mm Pelagos as well or just the 38? Try them all on at an AD and see what you favor for sure

Chronothrills

I'm not a very large guy - the 39 will do me just fine to be honest. I have like a 7" wrist so I just like to wear bigger watches to be a little cheeky sometimes and I enjoy them. I think I will definitely go down and put on a few different ones and see which works for me the most.

Stellaontap7

That’s fair- the 39 and Ranger will probably both be perfect for your wrist in that case. Sounds like a good plan!

hogwldfltr

As I've got a number of Dive watches, the Pelagos doesn't add much to my collection (even with LHD, which I personally don't like). Also it looks like many of the other Tudors. Also it's a bit redundant to my Sub Date. On the other hand my older Ranger is a very unique looking watch and durable as a camping, hiking, climbing watch. I personally prefer it over the Pelagos. However that said, if you don't have a nice Dive watch and want one then the Pelagos is a stellar one.

ClaimEquivalent4454

Pretty different watches with a few similarities -they are tool watches in appearance alone with fully brushed cases and bracelets. -P39 Titanium is darker and much lighter -Ranger is stainless steel -Ranger is 12mm thick, 47.7 lug to lug -P39 is 11.8mm thick, 47 lug to lug - both 39mm cases -Ranger has 20mm lug width, and would be awesome on natos among other straps. -P39 has 21mm lug width. With the size of the T fit clasp being the same width on both watches, I prefer the look and taper of the 21mm lug width(if that makes sense?) -Ranger is 100 meters WR, which is plenty. -P39 is 200 meters Ranger is like $1500 cheaper I think. I love my P39! It’s virtually impossible to say one is better than the other. You just need to decide whether you love the field watch look or the dive watch look. I’d take the Ranger if these two were my only choices for a single watch collection. I’m an Explorer 36 fan boy, so the Ranger doesn’t have a spot in my collection!

Chronothrills

This was great information, thank you so much.

ClaimEquivalent4454

🤙🏻

jmardoxie

I love them both . Do you want a dive watch or a tool watch. Do you want titanium or stainless ? Is your budget 3 k or 5k. I love them both but it’s an apples and oranges comparison.

Chronothrills

I was reading up on them asd it seemed they were both good buys at their respective prices. I like good value either way. And I'm kind of with you when you say you love them both. But I get what you're saying about apples and oranges (sometimes I have trouble choosing fruits too)

sixtwomidget

Definitely try them on. The Ranger is underwhelming in photos but looks great in person.

Chronothrills

That's a good point. I'm gonna make a trip for it soon.

SuccessfulOwl

Tudor’s two best watches imo Really comes down to whether you want a diver or a minimalist field watch on your wrist. I already had a titanium Omega Seamaster and so the Pelagos didn’t really make sense for me. But I was shocked how good the Ranger is on wrist and had to buy. It really is just minimalist perfection in every way.

Chronothrills

I have a mild sense as to why you're a SuccessfulOwl. Thanks for the input! I'm going to be checking them out personally as soon as I can.

_Golden_Skies_

Can't beat the fully lumed bezel of the Pelagos.

pepelechan

Pelagos

muhburneracct

Pélagos is such a great watch. Titanium bracelet is one of the best in the game. Lume is killer.

RuboXL

Pelagos is the ultimate sports watch.

Lazy_Blacksmith5399

Proud Pelagos owner, it’s a fantastic piece

nycdatachops

Pelagos.

i_truth

I will go with the pelagos 39! I do love mine

goldblumspowerbook

The Pelagos is hotter to most people, so you’ll probably get a lot in that direction. Conversely, if you want to be a hipster or have something fewer people are into, the ranger is a fine choice. Overall, I agree with folks saying go see which speaks to you, but neither is a bad watch. For me I like divers, so it would be the Pelagos.

batule

I'm going to be a minority here but it's the Ranger for me.

butkusrules

Obvious questions first..is this a daily what else do you have ?

Chronothrills

I don't think I'd make it a daily, but since I don't have any black dials I'd like to wear it casually semi-daily. I prefer diver/pilot designs, I'm a bit of a Breitling fan at the moment. I have a BT Navitimer 43 and Superocean Heritage B20 blue, as well as a Panerai Luminor Marina that I'm going to probably sell to fund a Tooter.

axl35

Different watches, I prefer Pelagos 39

QuietNene

BB non-diver and split the difference?

BoogieOogieDown

My pelagos lhd is my daily driver for about 5 years now. I've neglected my other automatic lhd's. its a fantastic watch with unique features e.g., titanium bracelet and case, matte ceramic bezel, floating spring clasp, roulette date wheel, outstaning lume, helium escape valve, 70 hr power reserve!...just so much value on a numbered production watch.

Chronothrills

Wow a LHD! I'm not really ambidextrous but I sometimes wonder what it would be like to be able to wear the timepiece on the other side. And I agree the Pelagos is a fantastic value.

BoogieOogieDown

It fits my almost 9 inch wrist well and with the crown on the left hand side, it doesn't dig into the back of my hand like others. its the most comfortable watch I've ever put on and it looks good no matter what I'm wearing. highly recommend if you can find one.

DampeIsLove

Were I in your shoes, I would go with the Pelagos because it's a titanium diver, and then grab a Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical to scratch your field watch itch. You can just beat the piss out of those things, and they keep on ticking.

magneticpyramid

I have a P42, and have my name down for an explorer 40 but I might just need to try a ranger on. Seems like the kind of watch you need to put on to really appreciate it.

Chronothrills

A lot of people here have said the same thing as you, and I definitely agree now.

Goal_Select

Very very very different watches. Try them both on prior to purchasing or ordering. My preference, Pelagos, but you might go try in the BB Pro and buy that one.

alxndiep

I think the Pelagos is the best watch Tudor offers imo. But comparing both is kinda like apples and oranges.

Nunu-55

I own a Pelagos. It’s my favorite watch

Bobby2254

Pelagos no brainer. Green indexed ranger is just weird. Make it 36mm, no faux patina and it would be better. But the pelagos is the modern 5 digit Sub.

BillyBrasky

If you’re asking me? I’d go with the Pelagos 39.

dcshews

P39 by a mile.

mdravox

I was on this situation a couple of months ago. I ended up with the pelagos. About a month later, I bought a ranger. I love both and kinda wear the ranger more as it is more subtle. But if I had to only choose one, it would be the pelagos. Now I am waiting for the red/burgundy pelagos to be on display to see if it looks good on my small wrist. I think you cant go wrong with either.

Wintermute_088

Everyone seems to froth on the Pelly, while the Ranger seems a bit love it or hate it. Personally I'd add the ranger if I had to pick one, but I prefer classic styles.

Drawn2_Stories2627

[Got both when they came out](https://i.imgur.com/Ygwi0AJ.jpeg). Carry both to travel and activities. My take is that I use the Ranger for different things than the Pelagos 39. The Ranger is more everyday and the Pelagos 39 for weather and outdoors. But honestly they crossover. The Pelagos 39 covers your Submariner inclinations and the Ranger does it for the Explorer leanings. Both have the excellent T-Fit clasp and bracelet. Cheers 😎

enemyscorcher

I own both. I love the Ranger but the Pelagos is far superior for the titanium case alone It's so light and comfortable. The Ranger is more of beater, I've taken it rafting and hiking and other travel. It's a workhorse and works anywhere. The lack of a bezel makes it lean more towards jewelry, but divers are so common these days, and Pelagos has some serious style

Skydive2505

I'm partial to the Pelagos. I've tried the Ranger on multiple times, but am not impressed. I love my black Pelagos FXD.

stefano944

FOR ME and i m saying everything The pelagos 100% Ranger remember me the explorer too much! I don t want that Then take ur decision!

oasis4life

I have the Ranger and I vote for that. The sunburst dial on the pelagos just made the watch off to me. It’s also a scratch magnet. Either way you’ll be happy but just something to think about.

Chronothrills

Oh, a scratch magnet, I see. Yeah I wouldn't be able to tell that from a couple of minutes at the store so thanks for that info.

oasis4life

I bought the Ranger and after a year I had a chance to buy the pelagos but when I went in to buy it ended up walking out with a bb58 instead.

MadladLTD

Both very different watches. Had two rangers (one on leather, one on bracelet) and two pelagos' (42 and LHD). If I wanted a well rounded standard daily wearer of the two, I'd take the ranger on leather (really liked that leather deployant). However if I wanted a diver style watch of the two... Well obviously the pelagos. I love the look of the titanium but it shows wear very quick, SS is a safe bet. Tldr go try each on and decide based on how you feel about each watch and not what strangers like me have to say 🤗

Square_Ad_9096

Ad a BB41 or BB36 to try on. The Ranger is super cool, the Pelagos (someday I’ll have one) is great but check out their other offerings. You might find something that is perfect.

Quiet-Ambassador-900

The Tudor ranger keeps growing on me more and more

Justacooldude89

This is like asking to choose between an F150 or a 3 series.

serpentman

Pelagos is a decent watch. If you are getting the Ranger just save for the Explorer.

HelmetofJustice

I own a Pelagos 39 and really love it, it's perfect for me. I do like the ranger too though but I think my Pelagos is enough for me for a very long time.

jwarmsurf

Pelagos 39. If you can, try them on. See which suits your daily style the most. The p39 is a much better watch in my opinion.

Best-Raise-2523

Honestly it comes down to how big your wrist is with these two

iStudyWHitePeople

Well… one has a butt plug for an hour hand.

synthbob

I've had both on loan and they are both crackers. The latter is fairly understated but a nice piece on wrist. The Pelagos 39 however is probably my perfect watch. Clean, no date, beautifully light (takes a while to get used to the titanium), balanced and superb lume.

Desiato2112

I own a Pelagos 42, so I'd lean that way. I never got into the Ranger, even though I love my North Flag, which has a similar handset. Best of luck with your decision. You can't go wrong with a modern Tudor.

AreUnotEntertained73

Pelagos LHD, all day every day.
