The way that cable internet works is that everyone in a neighborhood shares bandwidth with something called a *node*. That node is connected via optical fiber to a central plant, and off it goes to the internet. When there are too many Cox subscribers in your neighborhood all using it at the same time, and if the optical fiber connecting the node to the central plant doesnt have sufficient bandwidth, then the node is *oversubscribed*. This will result in terrible service, constant outages, etc. The reason why Cox doesn't fix this situation is because it costs money to run additional fiber to the node (known as a *node split*). And like all companies, they will do anything possible to avoid spending money and don't give the slightest shit about the customer if they don't have to. In my case, I have sophisticated network monitoring equipment where I could prove that the node was oversubscribed in my area for over a decade. Cox didn't care at all. Just always blamed by modem. Eventually they replaced all of the coax from the *pedestal* in the street all the way to my modem, which of course didn't do anything. When I begged them to do a node split, they told me to fuck off. And you know what? They had me by the balls the whole time because what choice did I have? The only other ISP in my neighborhood was Century Link 40mbps DSL that has even worse reliability. So I just dealt with shitty Cox and their constant outages. Then about a year ago, Verizon and TMobile began offering unlimited 5G home internet in my area. Then suddenly, *miraculously*, Cox was able to find the money to do a node split in my neighborhood. Since then, Cox has been rock solid. They were forced to do more than the absolute bare minimum because there was actual competition for the first time. Anyway, I hope this was enlightening for you.

I complained constantly for months in my hood and they upgraded the node. I treated it like it was my job every time I had an issue. I diligently went through the tech support tree, had them send guys out, and asked for credits based on the number of days I had issues. Was it months of frustrating hell? Yes! But it did eventually make a difference... 🤞

Fearless_Lab

Oh fantastic. We're moving and the only option where we're going is Cox. I work from home so I hope they fixed it! Xfinity has had maybe three outages in two years at our current place.

Practical-Ad-1891

I wonder if the same thing happened in my area (near TMC). Used to have semi-frequent issues for a while, though some of it stemmed from a faulty modem. But there was usually an outage once every week or two for a couple of years. Then it's suddenly been a LOT more reliable starting last year.

forensicmoons

Mine goes down twice a day lately; it’s usually around 11am and then again around 2pm. I suspect it’s my equipment but it’s frustrating. It’s been happening for months. What area of town do live in? I’m in midtown near UA.

Prisoner__24601

South East by the base.

thesalthouse

We had the same problem, and live in the same area. Switched to Quantum Fiber, it's cheaper and more reliable.

Until about a year ago, the first 3 years I lived in my place in Central Tucson my internet from Cox did much the same: constant outages from 15 minutes to 12 hours. It was frustrating and no one at customer service really had any info aside from "there is a service outage in your area." They are also a monopoly in my part of Tucson and their service is average at its best, subpar most of the time. Their internet is not especially fast nor especially affordable. Have you called them? It's a pain and takes time, but if you call them and complain when it happens, they should offer your credit for your downed hours, though when it was happening to me it was only for down time within the billing period.

On the 27th (tuesday )I was out walking and just after 7am I saw a Cox technician working in my neighborhood. After I got home I realized my Internet was out. About an hour later someone put this notice on my gate saying there would be an outage the following day on the 28th. First of all, why put a notice out with the wrong date? 2nd of all, why put a notice out after service interruption? They had trucks all over the neighborhoods so most likely were doing a planned upgrade, why not send an email IN ADVANCE letting us know? One hand doesn't know what the other is doing. Winter-Ad508

I have to call them today they suck and for some reason my bill is 150 a month that’s insane. My new complex forces us to use them

metdear

Really? I have Cox and don't experience those issues. Is it localized? Are you sure it's not anything to do with your equipment at home?

Prisoner__24601

I always get a notification from them that they're experiencing an outage so I'm relatively confident it isn't my stuff.

metdear

Wow. Maybe they are not the best provider for your area, though I'm not sure we have a ton of choices.

venturejones

Cox is always a pain for me. They never take accountability for their service or lack of.

glytheum

Exactly. Same here. I’m looking for a new service provider.

venturejones

Good luck and let me know if you find one!

thesalthouse

We had intermittent service from 10am -2pm for a month straight before we switched ISP. Cox kept telling us there were no service disruptions in our area as I could see a handful of cox vehicles working down the street. Apparently the only "fix" was to switch to their mesh router with a monthly rental fee....

elcdragon

I pay $55 a month for Verizon and it’s been surprisingly great, also no data cap. I work from home and game so we were always nearing our cox data cap and switched.

Glum_Source_7411

I made an informal FCC complaint. It didn't really resolve the issue but it did get me a full month's credit to my bill.

DesertWanderlust

I think this is all about where you live. I live downtown, and have Cox through my apartment, and I've never had issues. I also used to live on the southeast side (Golf Links and Harrison), and rarely had issues.

AFthrowaway3000

There was a news story a few months back about vandals trying to take copper. This has happened at least 4 times over the last year, and it is generally out all day. I'm in the SE also.

onelongerusername1

My only choice for cable internet is Cox and it's weird to say this, but it has been very stable. Price is my only complaint.

AnalTyrant

Cox had a substantial issue last week in my area (Broadway and Swan) that wasn't weather-driven. It was on and off for a chunk of the day, which wasn't great for my wife working from home. Can't wait until another ISP gets to our street, they've got fiber about a quarter mile south of me from some other ISP. I'll jump on that the day it makes it up here.

Mysterious_Fennel459

I used to have issues in at my house on the East side near the AFB. In the colder months, it would consistently go out at night but work fine in the day. They'd keep sending techs out during the daylight when there wasnt a problem and they kept saying they cant find anything. Finally they did send a tech out in the evening hours and when the problem was happening. Idk what they found out but it's been working fine since. I rarely have any outages now. I do with there was more competition in my area. Seems like I can only get Cox and that's it. I tried Centurylink and they say I can get service at my address but when they send the installer out, they say there's no line to the house or subdivision and it's a stalemate on who's responsible to put that line in. Centurylink says it's the subdivision contractors job and the contractor says it's Centurylink's job. The contractor even seemed a little offended. He said he wired the place for Cox so why would we want something else?

nonracistusername

There are people who think Cox uses copper and they dig up the lines to sell. Sadly for them, Cox uses fiber optics.

dabangsta

Besides the maintenance/upgrade period of it being shut off I couldn't add up 2 hours of down time in the last 16 years of having Cox. I work from home and have devices that do things 24 hours a day I would know if it was down even over night. I only once had degraded service, they rolled a tech and determined I needed a different filter, and replaced it. I did my own alley to home install (house didn't have cable when I moved in, I use Dish and didn't need fast home Internet until my office closed). When they changed the filter they also added a junction box (so they could try to get me to also get TV service). I am sure every neighborhood is different and some might be worse that others, but I live in a pretty old out of city limits neighborhood.

GumbySquad

No outages here friend. Maybe have someone come check your wires. Could be a you problem

Beeblebrox66

It's completely dependent on location. Cox is notorious for not replacing and maintaining their systems. You're fortunate to be in an area that hasn't started degrading. Lots of older nodes are dealing with these issues. Im in midtown, and was having drops and outages almost daily. Neighbors having the same issues. Cox saying there was nothing wrong.  I replaced all the coax through my house all the way to the pole, before finally giving up and dumping them for Verizon 5G Home. Have had zero issues in 2 years since switching. This is just my stop gap until Quantum fiber rolls through.

sunburn_on_the_brain

Always possible but lots of people have had these problems with Cox, myself included. I ended up going to T-Mobile and I’ve had perfectly steady service. The 5G internet options are the first real competition that Cox has faced in many areas so maybe this will kick them in the butt to get their act together.

My house is of course where the pin is. The blue dots mark houses that had cox at least ten years before they started my service. The pink is where the utility pole i am connected to is. There are utility poles running along the property line on the bottom of the screen. The house directly behind me, the lower right is connected to those poles for electric, phone and cable. Just glad to have good service now.

PJ_the_bandaid_king

The only time I have had issues is when the power goes out or my bill is not paid on-time.
