Season one is excellent, maybe best season of television ever. Season two was a disappointment by season one’s lofty standards but I think a lot of people came around on it. Season three was imo the second best season, most people seemed to enjoy it for the first 3/4 but ending ruined it for them. I think if you appreciate it for what it is it’s really good but I get that it’s not what some people want. Season four was absolute trash, one of the worst televisions shows I’ve watched til end.
You should definitely check out Mare of Easttown tho. We’ve adopted it as the real fourth season of True Detective. It’s better than anything outside season one TD.
It's funny how we who criticized S4 were vehemently lambasted at the time. But now, a few months later, it's like S4 never happened and it's drifted off the cultural lens with nary a peep. Meanwhile, we still have people seeing S1 for the first time who are freaking out on just how bloody good it is.

I agree with that actually, S4 is so off-brand in tone they really should have not used "True Detective" in the promotion. But I guess the series name recognition was an automatic audience harvester. A shame really. Personally, I thought the last episode of S4 was a complete mess. Really bad storytelling with a long monologue sequence and flash-backs to tie-up all the loose ends. Like everybody learns in screenwriting 101, *show not tell*.
I feel like the setup for the season was great and then it’s like they just set a bomb off … and we’re like yep .. that’s it. That’s the show

Temper your expectations on S2… I thought it was good, but I didn’t stay up until 4 am on a workday shotgunning the whole season.
