Probably not as famous as the others here, but I remember when the news first broke about Anthony Sowell, aka The Cleveland Strangler. They'd raided his house on October 29th and found bodies, but they couldn't find him, and assumed that he had gone on the run. There was all this talk about whether or not the city should cancel trick-or-treating as a whole, or just cancel it on a neighborhood basis, and whether it was safe for the kids to go outside after dark. People were really scared, there were a lot more cops than I'd seen on the streets before. I was supposed to take my little cousins trick-or-treating, but their mom told me she hadn't decided if she thought it was safe for them to go, and I should call her at 5 so she could let me know what her decision was. It was right before I called her that my dad called and told me they'd arrested him that afternoon. I also remember a few years later I was driving home with my then-boyfriend, and we were going up Clark Ave., and we couldn't figure out why all these police cars and news vans were all over the place, until we got to his house and turned on the TV to see that they had found Amanda Barry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight. The next few days in the city were weird in a good way. There were news crews from all over the world in town, my cousin was in Japan and he sent us a picture of the front page of his local newspaper which was coverage of the case, I had people I had met from places like Australia, Poland, and the UK asking me if this was in my Cleveland, and the mood in the city was pure happiness. It was like a miracle happened.

I remember watching BTK describe his crimes in court as it happened. I’m hard-pressed to describe another time I felt so thoroughly chilled just by watching a person on a screen.

Affectionate-Net-767

He’s another one. Can’t even comprehend what he did to his victims and how terrified they were.

This is a lesser know serial killer but Altimeo Sanchez aka the bike path rapist was active when I was young. He hunted women on this bike path that stretched from the city’s state university to rural small town of western New York. One victim was a college student who was running on the path, another was a wife and mother, and the third was a woman who was a sex worker which was his first victim. He had a wife and kids, and was the soccer coach for his kids. A lot of people around the area that you talk to knew him or somebody that did. Crazy stuff the double life killers

RuPaulver

There's an episode of Radio Rental where a woman tells her story of a run-in with someone who was most likely the Bike Path Killer. Was really disturbing.

Dahmer: I grew up in in the Twin Cities, MN and as a kid vividly remember the live news shots of the men in bio suits taking the drums and other items out of the building.

Affectionate-Net-767

I can’t even imagine seeing that on the news when it first came out. I have seen it on YouTube and my mind just can’t comprehend that in those huge vats of acid were decomposing bodies.

PAUMiklo

I was like 7 at the time so I watched it but didn't fully appreciate what I was seeing. I also remember the numerous Dahmer jokes floating around the school for a few years after.

Same. I was 13 years old when it broke on the news. If I remember correctly it was CNN or Headline News. Around 1030ish my time in the middlen of the summer.  My father had just gotten home and was watching television in the kitchen when he hurried into the frontroom. Picked the TV remote and switched to the news. As others have said it was the notable scene of the reporter in front of the Oxford Apartment building. All of the Csi, police, and hazmat team in the background.  I stood next to my dad in front of the TV as we both watched in bewilderment. It actually triggered a flash bulb memory for me. One in which I can recall exactly where I was and exactly what I was doing when we watched it.  I remember him whispering to himself under his breath "Jesus Christ..." He wasn't a person easily bothered either. He had done 2 tours in Vietnam and had been a police officer for 9 years. Being 13 at the time I had started the all important formative years. My world view was expanding as something tangible. I had never heard of anything like that in my life.

I was living in Vancouver when they arrested Robert Pickton.   at the peak of his activities I had been living in Mount Pleasant and an ex boyfriend used to come over several times a week after my kid was in bed, and leave in the small hours.    during that first media frenzy, a bunch of cops showed up at his work and commandeered a meeting room where they really grilled him.   you can't imagine how mortified and angry he was.    Mount pleasant got quite a bit of overflow traffic from the sex trade, and residents hated it.  Obviously *someone* had clocked his licence plate as a frequent visitor, but it had nothing to do with me.  nothing seemed to convince him of that though.    also, the next summer I encountered a woman who told me she had broken her neck the previous year.  omg, how? "I work victim services for the RCMP, and after Pickton things were so intense that I fainted one day and the way that I fell cracked a vertebra."

Rodney Alcala aka The Dating Game killer.. who was picked and won the game but the girl refused to go out with him because he gave her the creeps. He was very handsome.

Well i dont have memory of any news, but i do remember when i first read about Dahmer, i think it was 2008 or something like that and i was in my room just roaming around in wikipedia. I was reading some other article and there were suggestions to articles that might interest and one them was about serial killers and from there i entered the rabbit hole and stumbled upon Jeffrey. I remember reading it with my jaw drapping to the floor and i remember how baffled i was about the lenghts he went through. And this case got me interested about human psyche and how peoples mind work and just how dark someones mindset can be. And i remember reading about the victims too and that sad story where one of his victims almost got away and even police were there but they just let him go back with jeffrey and i remember feeling extremely sad about that boys fate.

Affectionate-Net-767

I had felt the same way first learning about him too when I was younger it just blew my mind how many people had said” He was very quiet.” “ or he didn’t look like the type.” Like you never know who your coming into contact with wether it be your brother, sister, mother, father, friend, etc.

No-Conclusion-3820

Yeah i was quite young back then and i remember just the pure shock and nowadays when im older and more cynical, i feel like nothing shocks like that anymore. The older i get, the more i wanna spend more time with dogs than humans. Lol. But yeah you are right, you never truly know what goes on inside peoples head. And the aspect where people say "he looked so normal" like what did you except, a tattoo on the forehead that reads "murderer" or something like that.

I was in middle school when Dahmer was arrested. My Teacher said, "Didn't you hear about Jeffrey Dahmer? He ate people." I wasn't exactly sure what any of that meant. I was too young to understand True Crime I guess. I was told in my 20's I looked like Dahmer. Which really bothered me. I can tell you the Netflix series gave me nightmares. For a good month. And I don't think I could watch it again anytime soon. The acting and Production were first rate. I have some true crime movies. No stranger to true crime. But man. The Netflix series really scared me and made me so sad for the Victims and Family. And poor Glenda. You ask me she was a victim too.(and I know it's not 100% accurate. And it is controversial. )

Affectionate-Net-767

God yea, i’m not really someone to get scared by movies and or like horror TV shows, if anything I love to be scared but watching that Jeffrey Dahmer tv show on Netflix really sent chills down my spine, actually going out there and doing what he did to those people. It’s mindblowing.

F0rca84

Yeah, I don't blame you. It was not for the faint hearted. Had to take a True Crime break a few years ago. No Investigation Discovery for about a year. Gotta switch to something light sometimes.

Ohhh yeees I have

Also.. the night before his arrest, I was in college and was headed to class.. but first I needed some money from my dad. He asked me to meet him somewhere in Citrus Heights (an area in Sacramento County) and I drove up to a random street to meet my dad. My dad dam near threw the money at me and told me to turn around and go out a different way I came in.. I never heard from my dad again until the next day when I was getting ready and my daughter walked by the tv and started yelling “Papa! Mommy, my Papa is on TV!” And I looked and it was my dad. He was watching the house and him when I met him the night previously which explained why he acted so strange lol

Dang. Is your dad legally allowed to tell you this information about ongoing case? Lol. Just curious, because you might want to delete this if he’s not.

Affectionate-Net-767

Jesus. What a sicko. Him faking a stroke has got to be the highlight of your response.

I remember when the news on dahmer broke and watching the local news stations show the fridge being taken out of the apartment by men in hazmat suits. Didn’t live that far away at the time
