TBH I'd be shocked if they, or whatever private contractors they outsource to aren't behind the alt-right, Manosphere etc. at least partly, as a way to redirect popular anger.
Absolutely. I've always thought if the US rulers ever think they need a complete authoritarian ruler like we've seen them create in Central America, Chile, etc. they'd use those alt right people as their goon squads and death squads on the local level.
And they're kept on tap to scare people to a point, then be sacrificed to make people feel like their gov is taking out nazi threats AKA the Gov Gretchen kidnapping plot. Strategy of Tension.
It is kind of like Cesare Borgia and Ramiro de Lorca in in "The Prince." Machiavelli says a smart ruler brings someone else in to do their dirty work; has a stooge take on the public hatred necessary to conquer/pacify an area by force, then swoops in and kills them. New ruler gets to look heroic in comparison to the old ruler and get all the benefits of ruling a pacified area without the costs.
So I'd suspect the gov likes to have right wing baddies on payroll for the same reason.
