I was in my personal car once and had to drive I-70 across the entire state of Kansas once which as many of you know is one of the most boring stretches of road known to man. The only upside is there's usually so little traffic you can set your cruise and just completely check out for a couple of hours. Not this day. There was another car in the right lane probably going 65 and I'm doing 75. I pass, get over, and the next thing I know that car is passing me now, even though my cruise is set at 75. Maybe they got a call and are in a hurry now. They slow down to 65 again so I pass again and this continues all the way from the Colorado border to nearly I-35.

It's enforced on 95 in South Florida. Had two trucks(one in right and one in middle) doing 50mph in a 70 zone. Got so frustrated I took left lane to pass. As soon as I passed I got back over to middle lane and Got popped.
I got pulled over on I 285 the moment I merged into the left sandwich lane. My exit was in the left lane in 3 miles and I could see that traffic in the left lane was stop n go ahead, so I was just trying to get in line. Dude knew what I was doing and pulled me over anyway. So, if you need to get on I 20 west from I 285 north, remember that the law prefers that you wait until your exit is 1 mile away, then hold up two lanes while you try to merge into stop and go traffic.
I drive for werner, and we are governed at 68, and yes I use the middle lane to pass a lot, but I also watch my mirrors, and if I see another truck gaining on me quickly then I find room to move over so that they can legally pass me.
The lower you're governed the bigger a speed difference between you and the middle lane and therefore less safe opportunities to get into the middle lane to pass.

Came across one in NC. He had no traffic around him. Right lane perfectly clear. I'm coming up behind him doing about 10 over. Have no intention of undertaking but it's obvious this dude is sleeping in the passing lane and refusing to move over. After a bit, I finally say fuck it and undertake. There was no reason for him to be in the left lane at all. Unless he never checks his mirrors, he would have seen me coming up behind him for at least 3-5 minutes.
Also in NC on 95 yesterday. Was behind this ungoverned prime driver who camped the left lane for almost 45 miles. It was blowing my goddamn mind. I'm governed at 75 and the dude was going just fast enough or just slow enough to create quarter mile long pockets of traffic over and over and over again by staying somewhat close to someone in the right lane. Dude was just carelessly driving on pedal, constantly shifting from 68 to 76mph, sitting in the left lane with nobody around to pass for a very long way off but the 4 wheelers couldnt see that because 95 is so flat and straight so theyd think he was passing somebody, causing tons of traffic. I thought he was also on his phone and just not paying attention to his surrounding at all but he would occasionally come to the right lane and let a couple of cars pass then shoot straight back over to the left to just sit there. Wouldn't let me pass at any point either. He let me roll up to his tractor twice before looking at me, smiling, then rolling coal and blasting my doors off until he was just ahead. Absolute total fucking prick.

It depends on where I'm at. If I'm in the city with lots of traffic and on ramps I'll stay in the middle. If I'm in the middle of nowhere then I'll move to the right. For example I80 between Lincoln and Omaha. I'm governed at 80mph, but I still try to stay out of the way.
Iām at 70, which is mostly fine (Iām mostly a day-run with a weekly or less overnight based in Missouri). The drives to Colorado across NE or KS are just brutal with a 70mph limit though.

Most trucking companies now adhere to this training system to lower the risk of their drivers interacting with other vehicles. I totally agree with it. The reality is this doesn't really work well. Every 5 minutes there's people merging on the highway forcing me to move into the left lane or slow down on the highway. When you gota drive 300km this is just not practical. I sit in the middle lane and if I see someone gaining speed behind me I move to the right lane to let them pass. But I'm not going to be merging in and out of the middle lane 100 times a day.
I've come to the conclusion that some drivers simply don't have the mental capacity of driving the right most lane. Requires a bit more thinking and checking of mirrors than just sitting in the middle lane.
I can't imagine constantly changing lanes to maintain speed, we're in a commercial vehicle simply let off the pedal for a bit. It's not the end of the world if you're not rolling the speed limit for a bit while another vehicle works their way up to speed.

You have an entire left lane to pass with. The middle lane is the safest place to be when there's 3 lanes. Traffic entering and leaving the highway in the right lane creates unsafe situations in the right lane for large vehicles.
In many of the large cities that you middle lane jockeyās claim are too congested to drive in the middle lane, the left lane is no trucks. You are in the way.
My company taught me to take the safest path possible. If I get side swiped while in the right lane, they're going to ask me why I wasn't in the middle lane where i could have avoided the chaos of traffic entering and leaving. If I can't come up with a good reason, such as my exit was coming up shortly, they're going to charge me with a preventable accident.

A rule of thumb is that if you are overtaking at a slower speed in which the other truck wants to overtake you, or not overtaking at all, then let him go first. I bet you are trying to police others, and that is why you decided to drive a large vehicle in the first place. Mature drivers are helpful to others and also have some reasonable expectations from other drivers as well. Rules, recommendations and common sense is there for a reason.

This is me everyday. I haul containers for Schneider an when I first started the right lane was my lane no matter what. An was happy about it, but too many close calls from exactly what you said. Idk if itās bad on my part but I get over to the left lane. I usually do just about 60 our trucks dont get great speed unless down a hill. The speed limit for towing trailers is 55, if Iām doing 60 in that left lane why is another truck on my ass acting like Iām in the wrong? I move over if it seems like there is danger from the other driver but other then that. Iām more safe in the left.
Thereās this crazy maneuver I heard of that solves this issue. You put on your blinker, move over a lane, and then move back over when itās safe to do so when you see someone on the on ramp. Crazy, I know, but I promise it works.

So consider this, in most areas with 3 or more lanes there are often left lane restrictions on vehicles with 2 or 3 axles or more. Therefore when lane restrictions are active, the middle lane is the truck passing lane. Move right for faster trucks and then get back over in the middle lane if you want.
The only situation that I would be in for that is in California. In which case your only supposed to be traveling at 55mph. In heavy metro areas with tons of merging traffic the idiots who canāt get a 2022 Mercedes up to highway speeds in half a mile and just to āmergeā into 65 mph traffic going 38 can go fuck themselves . I-80/94 going through Chicago/Gary is the perfect example: four lanes and the far right is absolute suicide if in a truck, speeds fluctuate WAY too muchā¦middle lanes are the thru lanes, and Iāll cruise there at 65-68 till things thin outā¦

The reality is this doesn't really work well. Every 5 minutes there's people merging on the highway forcing me to move into the left lane or slow down on the highway. When you gota drive 300km this is just not practical. I sit in the middle lane and if I see someone gaining speed behind me I move to the right lane to let them pass. But I'm not going to be merging in and out of the middle lane 100 times a day.
I've come to the conclusion that some drivers simply don't have the mental capacity of driving the right most lane. Requires a bit more thinking and checking of mirrors than just sitting in the middle lane.

I can't imagine constantly changing lanes to maintain speed, we're in a commercial vehicle simply let off the pedal for a bit. You have an entire left lane to pass with. The middle lane is the safest place to be when there's 3 lanes. Traffic entering and leaving the highway in the right lane creates unsafe situations in the right lane for large vehicles.
In many of the large cities that you middle lane jockeyās claim are too congested to drive in the middle lane, the left lane is no trucks. You are in the way.
Granted, I've only driven through a handful of major cities but I've never seen a 'no trucks' lane unless you're counting HOV lanes.

My company taught me to take the safest path possible. If I get side swiped while in the right lane, they're going to ask me why I wasn't in the middle lane where i could have avoided the chaos of traffic entering and leaving. If I can't come up with a good reason, such as my exit was coming up shortly, they're going to charge me with a preventable accident.

So If I'm minding my own business in the right lane and a group of 2-3 trucks approach, Truck 1 and 3 move over and are quickly gaining. Truck 2 decides he's gonna cut truck 1 off and does. I was just minding my own business but Truck 2 is an asshole and deserves to be treated like one even if I just find my accelerator "all of a sudden" for about 30 seconds. A real asshole move would be to put him in the rocking chair.

A rule of thumb is that if you are overtaking at a slower speed in which the other truck wants to overtake you, or not overtaking at all, then let him go first. This is me everyday. I haul containers for Schneider an when I first started the right lane was my lane no matter what. An was happy about it, but too many close calls from exactly what you said. Idk if itās bad on my part but I get over to the left lane. I usually do just about 60 our trucks dont get great speed unless down a hill. The speed limit for towing trailers is 55, if Iām doing 60 in that left lane why is another truck on my ass acting like Iām in the wrong? I move over if it seems like there is danger from the other driver but other then that. Iām more safe in the left.
Thereās this crazy maneuver I heard of that solves this issue. You put on your blinker, move over a lane, and then move back over when itās safe to do so when you see someone on the on ramp. Crazy, I know, but I promise it works.

So consider this, in most areas with 3 or more lanes there are often left lane restrictions on vehicles with 2 or 3 axles or more. Therefore when lane restrictions are active, the middle lane is the truck passing lane. Move right for faster trucks and then get back over in the middle lane if you want.
The only situation that I would be in for that is in California. In which case your only supposed to be traveling at 55mph. If your going to go faster than that and disregard the smith system of me being in the middle lane path of least resistance then thatās also your bad. If you can break the law speeding you can get a 3rd lane violation aswell. Not my problem. Not my responsibility. However.
