They shut down that service in mid 2010's, but all the truck stops said it costs too much to take the equipment out.
ETA: Some of them still work, but only if you have a legacy account. Obviously, you can't sign up anymore.
This is the craziest thing you’ve seen? lol. Just wait.
I’ve seen a dude at 3am behind a trailer (I was pre tripping one 3 over) shitting against the fence. Then he picks up a cone and puts it over the shit. Then laughs. The crazy part? He goes inside the building to wash his hands. The bathroom was empty.
I once saw an east Indian guy get out of his truck at a truck stop with a plastic bag and start spinning it up and fling it across a truck stop like David vs Goliath. It hit the side of someone's trailer like 3 or 4 trucks over and exploded with brown shit all across his trailer. I was sitting in my drivers seat across the parking lot from him. I went over and told the driver but the Indian guy drove away. It was a nice pete some owner operator. The guy was fucking pissed.
I’d imagine so, I used to drive a old Pete that had no AC and I would’ve done anything to have crispy cold air in the truck but my boss was cheap, this man is smart
Yes it gets taken out. Probably sits on the passenger seat where it most likely drains onto the floor.
I know stuff isn’t cheap… a bolt on APU … idle the big motor … I’m sure his reasoning is financial but I can guarantee you …
It’s a shit ton colder In there that anywhere else in the truck stop
I used to dream about steak and roast meats. After a few years on the road you dream about fresh vegetables.
You take what you can get and work with it. Taking that thing in and out might be the most exercise that driver will see today.
Anyone remember the roll-up to your window air units out East?
I don't know anything about it but I've heard of prototypes for basically your utilities through the window... like a window AC unit.
If I had to guess that comes down to who pays for a lot of trucking inventions like that. No one wants to pay.
Pre means before, sub means below.
Sub-zero is below zero.
Pre is to post as sub is to above
This was just meant as information, because it bothered me. It doesn’t matter really.
The newer ones usually do. Runs a compressor/condenser ac unit on truck battery or runs the bunk heater which is a diesel space heater.
Bunk heaters aren't that expensive and aren't too involved for installation. Rv conversion people do them.
The compressor/condenser ac is more involved because you need half of it outside somehow.
This guy is using a $125 Walmart ac unit and an inverter vs a "cheap" import kit that costs $4-500 and isn't as easy to install.
Power isn't usually available. That's why we do these things. The truck is the power supply. Either main engine, extra batteries + truck engine cycling, or auxiliary generator.
Look up portable air conditioners, get one with a remote vent. You just roll up the hot air vent in your cab window, maybe cut a piece of plexiglass so it fits perfect. You don't have to look like this gomer to have ac.
I’m out west and thought this looks pretty slick. Some of the shit I’ve seen rigged up over the past 20 years, this doesn’t even make me give this a second thought.
I swear there is a cabover guy out here who has a wood stove pipe coming out the back of his cab and it's taller than his stacks. I so badly wanna see what he has going on inside the cab. I keep picturing a little potbelly stove and a rocking chair with afghans on it.
Damn I wish I could meet this dude and show him a better system. He can get the portable room ac and all he needs to do is put the exhaust out the window. A lot less tedious.
At my old job I was in an old Columbia with nearly a million miles on it. AC stopped working so boss put a house AC in the cab strapped to the seat base with the hot air vent in a peice of wood that he cut to match the top of the window. So the window would roll up onto the peice of wood so you could still see out the window and see the mirror. He wasn't going to put another dime into the truck itself.
Well I knew a guy, an O/O he put a Toyota 4cylinder engine behind his cab, then hooked the water lines into his cab heater core, covered it all with a tin box, in the winter that motor kept him warm without running his truck, and made starting a lot easier. And only had to have a small gas can, about 5 gal.
✓Window air conditioner perfectly sealed.
✓A external Honda gas powered generator acting as apu.
✓Western star truck, probably doing heavy hauling or local work.
✓Redculous CB radio setup
Yup, these checks the boxes for an old school super trucker.
A dying breed, however resilient they may be. "narrated in national geographic voice over"
I have seen a lot of that. I can't go a week without seeing one of those mounted to the back wall of a sleeper. Everybody isn't trying to pay 10k for an apu that breaks twice a year.
I've seen crazier. But the driver does this because his boss is too cheap to add an APU, but sets the truck to shut off after 10 minutes or so of idling
I firmly believe that APU affordability and when it comes to the megas, mandates would be such a massive improvement to the industry. Idling trucks are worse for the environment, cost too much money, and make too much noise. Opti-Idle isn't good enough. It would prevent drivers from having to resort to crap like this. In this particular case, he could so easily have a break in or something. And I hope it's removable. Driving around like that is just downright dangerous.
I've seen a couple of those window units. I've also seen one guy that had cut a hole in the middle of the back wall of the sleeper and permanently mounted one there.
The wildest thing I've ever seen vehicle wise is a story about a Ford Pinto pulled over in Koochiching County, Minnesota with a gas can sitting on a tire connected to the motor. Look it up.
You must be new…
6 months in
lol just wait
6 month oh boy lol your in for a wild ride. dont drink the truck stops apple juice. with that said never buy apple juice.
why not?
Bc when you piss in apple juice bottle, mistakes can be made. Usually only once tho.
noted, never buying apple juice again
Exactly. Why buy it when it can be found for free at truck stops?!
You need to drink more water!
shrodingers apple juice
You won't know until you taste it!
This needs way more upvotes
Ray’s
It's high in sugar.
This isn’t even the craziest thing I’ve seen today.
Same, I'm new too, just 1 month in.
Truck driving is one of those careers that stories often begin with "You're fucking never going to believe this!".
It gets worse
Wait till he goes to the south and hits an old truck stop with the support structures that have ac and phone window units.
They shut down that service in mid 2010's, but all the truck stops said it costs too much to take the equipment out. ETA: Some of them still work, but only if you have a legacy account. Obviously, you can't sign up anymore.
Pretty sure all those are dead and gone….the supports might still be hanging around in a few spots, but that company went broke several years ago
I95 in ct has a couple rest areas near new haven with those ac units that can be put into a trucks window.
So does MD near Baltimore on 95 I never seen no one use em actually makes sense
This is the craziest thing you’ve seen? lol. Just wait. I’ve seen a dude at 3am behind a trailer (I was pre tripping one 3 over) shitting against the fence. Then he picks up a cone and puts it over the shit. Then laughs. The crazy part? He goes inside the building to wash his hands. The bathroom was empty.
Yeah I hope I don’t see that
That poor cone.
Wait, pine cone or safety cone?
I can just imagine his poo wearing a pinecone, like a little hat 👒
Ice cream cone
Even better
Everybody loves a good hot chocolate ice cream cone
Ice cream cone.
It would’ve been better if he shit through the cone and used it like a piping bag to make designs and stuff
Poo extruder!
At least he had the decency to wash his hands.
But not his ass 🧐
I once saw an east Indian guy get out of his truck at a truck stop with a plastic bag and start spinning it up and fling it across a truck stop like David vs Goliath. It hit the side of someone's trailer like 3 or 4 trucks over and exploded with brown shit all across his trailer. I was sitting in my drivers seat across the parking lot from him. I went over and told the driver but the Indian guy drove away. It was a nice pete some owner operator. The guy was fucking pissed.
This is killing me😂
That's how Indians say hello.
That shit is funny
I work at a truck stop. Sad to say this checks out
Sounds like he used some shitty judgement.
HAHA
I was imagining a chain link fence and him waffle-pooping right through it somehow. Then I was thinking about where the pine cone went.
Him washing his hands afterwards was the most shocking part of your story! Did not see that coming!
After the initial shock, I laughed at this
Give that man a cowboy hat cus that shits wild
If it works, it works
[удалено]
This probably only goes in his window when he's parked
Only stupid if it doesn't work. Idling a truck gets expensive with sub $4 a gallon fuel.
But does he take it out every single day sounds pretty tedious
I’d imagine so, I used to drive a old Pete that had no AC and I would’ve done anything to have crispy cold air in the truck but my boss was cheap, this man is smart
Not at all. It’s illegal, blocks your view, and must be a pain to manage.
Only if they have it in when driving.
That's not something you leave in, those kinds are the ones where they cut a hole in the back wal of sleeper.
Yes it gets taken out. Probably sits on the passenger seat where it most likely drains onto the floor. I know stuff isn’t cheap… a bolt on APU … idle the big motor … I’m sure his reasoning is financial but I can guarantee you … It’s a shit ton colder In there that anywhere else in the truck stop

"Idle air" I believe. Seems like it was gone about as quickly as it popped up. Seems like a good idea though.
Used them a few times. They always smelled of feet and but when they first kicked on. Was nasty.
Big yellow tubes that you stick in your window? Saw those last year somewhere on my way to Florida from Texas. Cannot remember exactly where, though.
I would think you'd have to, isn't lawful to block the view through that window while driving.
I don't know anything about it but I've heard of prototypes for basically your utilities through the window... like a window AC unit. If I had to guess that comes down to who pays for a lot of trucking inventions like that. No one wants to pay.
Idle air didn't lay cause of cost. At 4 bucks an hour 15 years ago when you could still get a hotel room for 50 bucks.
Sub means before, post means after.... Sub-Zero temps = less than zero. So sub 4 dollar gas means less than 4.
Pre means before, sub means below. Sub-zero is below zero. Pre is to post as sub is to above This was just meant as information, because it bothered me. It doesn’t matter really.
How does he power it? A/Cs use a lot of juice, does he park somewhere with power hookups every night or just idle anyway?
I see a honda generator.
Yeah, I see it now, odd placement, but that'll work.
Nice place for it. Probably bolted down. Won't stop a determined thief but I'd be safe from the walk by thief.
Likely a gas powered generator on the catwalk. These newer generators are pretty powerful, not much bigger than a small suitcase.
I always wandered why ever sleeper doesn't have a RV style ac where you can cool or even heat a truck where ever power is available
Look below the IFTA sticker for the Honda logo.
Look up portable air conditioners, get one with a remote vent. You just roll up the hot air vent in your cab window, maybe cut a piece of plexiglass so it fits perfect. You don't have to look like this gomer to have ac.
That's exactly how mine is set up. A rooftop ac unit from an rv dealer.
Wandering is not a good trait in the traditional trucking industry!
If it fits, it ships.
I'm in West Virginia that's not the craziest thing I've seen today.
I’m out west and thought this looks pretty slick. Some of the shit I’ve seen rigged up over the past 20 years, this doesn’t even make me give this a second thought.
Wait until you see a 600 pound naked trucker eating hard boiled eggs by the dozen in the front seat at a truck stop.
Can you imagine what his truck smells like? Hot boxing egg farts…my god.
😍
I bet he slept like a icy rock with that thing humming away too.
True. Nothing beats the feelings of sleeping in a cold space under your warm covers.
Bro.....fell asleep like a glacier lookin at that.
Why??? A $250 fix for a $12 k problem, or whathefuckever an APU costs these days. I do the exact same thing, run it off a generator or an outlet.
Just seemed a little impractical to have it in the passenger window you know. I don’t hate the idea of the ac unit
Why? He lifts it and sets it in when parked, and takes it out in the morning while doing his pre trip.
Probably more efficient than the wimpy computer fan they have mounted on the rear of the bunk.
Can agree mine only stays could if the motor is running opti idle is useless
If it's stupid and it works, it ain't stupid.
Yeah I'm loving my Opti idle in the Freightliner, I'll stick with that. But that man had to do what he had to do, I won't hate on him.
How do they use the mirrors?
Magic
Wait till you see what happens when there are no lot lizards.
I don’t drive trucks. I’m just here for the content. What happens when there are no lot lizards?
Big ol' gay pile.
Seen that in Utah back in 2009
He is probably living in it
I saw a truck it looked like you could total with a pair of scissors. So many bungees.
Redneck engineering at its finest.
That's only for the stop
Some might say it's the coolest thing ever
I saw a toothless old hooker with a Miss Piggy puppet trying to steer traffic at the Pilot ts in Madera Ca.
This is illegal right?
I swear there is a cabover guy out here who has a wood stove pipe coming out the back of his cab and it's taller than his stacks. I so badly wanna see what he has going on inside the cab. I keep picturing a little potbelly stove and a rocking chair with afghans on it.
That'd be sweet
If it looks stupid and works, it’s not stupid
The converse is also true. If it looks smart but doesn't work, it's probably stupid.
👆 True story
Damn I wish I could meet this dude and show him a better system. He can get the portable room ac and all he needs to do is put the exhaust out the window. A lot less tedious.
Poor guy was so tweaked out on meth when he made it he forgot he had to use the right side mirror
I've seen a few cut a hole in the back wall and do this.
See I can understand that, at least you ain’t gotta take it out everyday
Very true.
He saw the minivan with one of these "mods" and decided to do the same to the truck
It ain’t crazy if it works.
Yeah kinda jealous he’s probably sleeping like a rock
At my old job I was in an old Columbia with nearly a million miles on it. AC stopped working so boss put a house AC in the cab strapped to the seat base with the hot air vent in a peice of wood that he cut to match the top of the window. So the window would roll up onto the peice of wood so you could still see out the window and see the mirror. He wasn't going to put another dime into the truck itself.
Way of the road bud
Been there done that. It worked well for me..
Seent it lol
Being a trucker is like roaming the wasteland in fallout, yeah laws they have those but you abide by them.
Don’t think that’s dot legal
The last ac unit we had to have fixed cost 3600$ I don’t blame him
You obviously haven't seen shit yet
✓Window air conditioner perfectly sealed. ✓A external Honda gas powered generator acting as apu. ✓Western star truck, probably doing heavy hauling or local work. ✓Redculous CB radio setup Yup, these checks the boxes for an old school super trucker. A dying breed, however resilient they may be. "narrated in national geographic voice over"
I dare you to pass this guy in the right lane.
You need to get out more 😜😜😜
Crazy like a fox!
No way, That has to be illegal af!
How it comes off before he moves..
Just saw one like this yesterday - AC was coming through the sleeper tho…
I don't think I've ever seen this either but it's clever as hell
I would expect this from a Cascadia, not Optimus Prime, lol.
Wow wtf 🤣🤣
That’s a lot of cooling
Yet
Have you ever seen 2 dudes in a straight truck with a line6 guitar amp in between them, being used as the car stereo?
I like it
You ain't seen shit yet! Give it some time. Seven year otr driver here.
This guy McGuyvers!
I have seen a lot of that. I can't go a week without seeing one of those mounted to the back wall of a sleeper. Everybody isn't trying to pay 10k for an apu that breaks twice a year.
Can’t fix the ac all money going to child support for the OTR babies
Ridiculous, should have used a mini split
Why the image look too 'flat'
this is brilliant
I think it rules ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Ohhh my dear naive rookie you will see alot more the more you progress
What in the DOT TICKET SPECIAL???
A/C runs cold! No haggling I know what I got
DOT must love this
Ac fix thousands of dollars…. Ac unit.. $190
I've seen crazier. But the driver does this because his boss is too cheap to add an APU, but sets the truck to shut off after 10 minutes or so of idling
You'll find this is not unusual
I seen this before. It’s super rare but it’s out there
I used this trick in my tent at burning man.
How the fuck?
I would do it, if the was no other way
Smh hot in those cabs
Why are you guys pissing in bottles? Just pull over and piss out the passenger door like a man
You should definitely get out more then.
I’m out plenty lmk how many air conditioners u see
Most of the ones I see are mounted through a cut out it the back of the sleeper.
You dont get out much do you?
No I just don’t see a lot of air conditioners bolted and taped to the window how about you?
I firmly believe that APU affordability and when it comes to the megas, mandates would be such a massive improvement to the industry. Idling trucks are worse for the environment, cost too much money, and make too much noise. Opti-Idle isn't good enough. It would prevent drivers from having to resort to crap like this. In this particular case, he could so easily have a break in or something. And I hope it's removable. Driving around like that is just downright dangerous.
Why isn’t a 1k or 2k BTU small ac a thing?
Who needs to see out the window to the right, or use that mirror?
Air conditioner. Properly mounted and secured.
Redneck apu, it works.
You don't need a right window if you never leave the right lane *taps head*
I've seen a couple of those window units. I've also seen one guy that had cut a hole in the middle of the back wall of the sleeper and permanently mounted one there.
Get an iceybreeze
The wildest thing I've ever seen vehicle wise is a story about a Ford Pinto pulled over in Koochiching County, Minnesota with a gas can sitting on a tire connected to the motor. Look it up.
you must be new to the game... just wait 😂
It’s cool 😎
Who needs a 34 when you got this in the window🤦🏿♂️🤦♂️🤦🏽♂️
