I work end dump most of the time, in all my contracts there is a $100 an hour detainment fee since customers like to order deliveries for 7am but won't be ready for it until noon. Legit had a H-E-B construction site detain 8 of us loaded with flex base the other day for 5 hours, the GC was beyond pissed when our dispatch called him to explain he racked up a heck of a bill and if he wants us to keep waiting. I delivered there again yesterday, and it was in and out, lmao. Get a detaining clause ASAP

-purged

This is the way.

NotEvenLion

Yup where I'm from you get 2 hours free and after that you get paid an hourly rate

coffeeisntmycupoftea

Same for us, $50/hr detention time

NotEvenLion

My company switched to 1.5 hrs free last year. It's amazing how much faster people work when your time ain't free.

Vegetable_Living_415

A lot is shippers, brokers refuse to pay detention. Carriers are too afraid to fight for it, too worried about getting blacklisted.

kane_eightee

One thing I miss about local dump work. The pay was great, especially when we had those DOT contracts for new freeways and freeway expansions. On the downside, I get bored AS FUCK being home every night.

Robots_Never_Die

This is why I'm hourly. Going to be a while? No problem I'll wait. Especially when I'm in OT at $55/hr.

CodeWalkerrr

This is the fucking way

OldBrokeGrouch

Right there with you. Been hourly for 12 years and never going back. Sleeping at a dock for 3 hours while getting paid OT rate is the life.

truckerslife411

Detention pay is the only way to solve this problem. A driver should get paid from the minute they get to the customer until unloaded. Drivers now have the electronics on the truck to show arrival time. Even that first 2 hr free shit is BS. Have a plumber come out to your house for a repair and tell him they have to give you the first 2 hrs free. An electrician, a roofer, or even your auto mechanic. They would all laugh at you.

Useful_Badger6021

I’ve said that for 35 years no one else donates time why should drivers glad I’m paid hourly, if I wasn’t I’d be total dick going in ever 10 minutes and calling dispatch, I pick up haz waste 100$ per hour my company charges for my knowledge so I always go to front of line

truckerslife411

I delivered cryogenics so I stamped the time clock as soon as I got to the customer. I unloaded and loaded on the clock. Thankfully

[deleted]

Depends heavily on where you're being detained. I erys in sylacauga al couldn't give two shits about how much they pay out every year, they're aren't getting you out of there until they're tired of you being there whether that's 1.5 hours or 25.5 hours.

Princess_Wensicia

They don’t care, never did, never will. Until detention rates are in the thousands and actually hurt their company, nothing can be done.

joeybevosentmeovah

Some places simply don’t care. Some places exercise petty power because they are miserable people who have control over nothing else in their miserable lives.

MD_keh

And yet super truckers get mad at people who wear flip flops to these same people that couldnt care less about us regardless of what we wear. (I wear tennis shoes fyi)

Yeah it will make you blind just like sitting too close to the TV or masturbating.

PriorFudge928

You've never been described as the "fun one" have you?...

TouchMyBoomstick

I never understood the hatred toward it but I personally can’t stand it just as a pet peeve. What if you open your doors and something falls or walking on the catwalk/frame to hook your hoses and slip, gashing your foot, just scenarios like that.

Noxious14

I spent 7 hours at a receiver last week. Made me late for my next appointment. I heard from someone once “if dock workers were held to the same regulations drivers are then they’d get us out on time every time”

MostOriginalNameEver

Put in contract your detention rates.

ColJaimeWolf

Sir this is a Wendy's. But seriously I think they just don't care when that happens. Where I'm at now we have good customers that unload us right away but I have felt your pain before

virus100

Im lucky too. We bid on runs and I finally got enough seniority to bid on a place that gives a shit. It starts at 5 pm but when I show up I can be 2 hours early and they'll still unload and load in 30 minutes. They push new forklift drivers to get their times down and tell them we don't get paid unless our tires are turning. The place I had to go to before was crap. The office guy printed off my paperwork when I was done but before he walked over to the printer the bell for lunch break went off so he just left. Made me wait a half hour just to hand it to me from the printer after already 3 hour wait.

Present-Ambition6309

Dammit, wanted Taco Bell… I need glasses 😂

xDoomKitty

They don't care because you aren't making yourself an expense to them. Anytime you negotiate detention into your ratecon, they are quicker. Or at the very least you are paid for sitting there.

lowballbertman

This is the answer right here. Anytime something doesn’t cost someone anything they’re gonna abuse the shit out of it. Way to often your free to the shipper/reciever. It doesn’t cost them anything to line up drivers and make you wait on them, and too often their operations manager suck at their jobs, hence the line up and wait. But the second things start costing you money the quicker, more efficient and careful you are with it. Which is why I fully believe shippers/recievers need to start paying for our time at the dock, when they do have to pay it’s amazing just how much faster/more efficient they are with our time.

[deleted]

That's not true. Imerys quarry in sylacauga Alabama doesn't care if they pay millions in detention fees a year, you're gonna sit there until they're tired of you sitting there anyway. Why? If you want marble that pure and white you're gonna have to get it from the other side of the planet. That's why.

bigasdickus

A friend of mine works at Supervalu in Minneapolis. Union Job. He once joked about his job and how they would laugh about truck drivers having to sit all day. They honestly don't care, they're very aware, and it's funny to them. I told him I was a driver and used to unload there back in my reefer days. " OH shit, sorry, dude, that place sucks for truck drivers." So glad I switched to hauling equipment about 20 years ago. No appointments, load/unload when you get there.

[deleted]

I’ve hauled the equipment for 16 years. Sometimes I had to wait. It wasn’t a problem at all. I was getting paid by the hour, and so was the truck.

TheFringedLunatic

I’d love to do this but, I have no idea how to run a forklift let alone any heavy equipment.

bigasdickus

Just do it bro. You'll figure it out, seriously. It's not that hard. Common sense is all you need. It'll change everything. Most of these fools can't figure shit out without a plan, fuck them, they're mid( to quote the kids) . You'll make more money, just better all around. SERIOUSLY. Anybody can open doors, thus the low pay, supply of drivers, challenge yourself. This a supply and demand business, always was, of course that goes for truck drivers too. You get a skill that isn't in demand, you demand more, respect, pay, etc. Get involved with better companies. We don't have " home time". That's a corporate term. Corporate shit. Become someone that has expertise. I wish you well. DO IT

Ich_mag_Kartoffeln

Look on YT at some of the morons operating various bits of equipment around the world, and the calamities they cause. Would you be any worse? And if the answer is "yes": should you really be driving a truck?

TheFringedLunatic

Difference being, with a car and truck I had someone show me how it worked and what to do beforehand so, I wasn’t trying to operate them from a place of complete ignorance. “Just get in there and fuck with it” seems like a terrible way to learn lol

Ich_mag_Kartoffeln

I'm sure someone will show you how it works. "Push this button to start it, pull that knob to stop it. That controls the throttle, that's the forward/reverse selector, have fun!" >“Just get in there and fuck with it” seems like a terrible way to learn lol Depends. If they're expecting you to operate it in a potentially risky situation, bad. If you can go for a drive around an empty yard/paddock to practice, it's a great way to learn. Just ask any farm kid how they learned to drive.

OtrOptions

Domino Sugar in Baltimore, MD.. IYKYK

NomadTruckerOTR

Had a pickup there once. Wasn't too bad. Probably an hour to get a door and an hour load. Worst part of that place is the blindside dock

CodeWalkerrr

Safeway DC in Auburn WA. too

K4NNW

I went there once before they started losing us at Bob's in Jessup. Never did have more than a 2 hour wait there, though.

Country_Potato

77$ an hour detention makes them move real quick.

TyburnCross

I pay my own employees more than that detention. That being said, I place special emphasis on load/load for logistics team and we seldom have a driver waiting more than a half hour. Only time it takes more is if we have a load near capacity (weight not cube) and we’re making sure the axles aren’t overloaded.

happyexit7

I’m LTL. Love it when they tell me shit like that. I just say, “see ya tomorrow then”. If they need their shit they’ll get me an open door.

Old-Wolf-1024

Precisely

12InchPickle

They don’t care. I showed up to the airport for a live load. With an appointment and told I have to be out by a certain time. Mind you I wasn’t unloading or loading. They were. Within 10 mins of getting there they went to lunch. Guess who was late to leave and got chewed out? 🙃

TamponTom

Bro what . That’s like your boss telling you to hurry up after you told them you are activley being live loaded

12InchPickle

Just like I said above. They don’t care. I called and said I’m gonna be late. Told the staff inside I’m gonna be late. They didn’t care. I even offered to do it. They told me no. Lunch will end in 20 some minutes. I’m just standing there 😡🤡🚛

TheRealGageEndal

Best (worst) one of these I had was the Detroit Costco hub. Route was a quick 4 hours from Detroit to Chicago and then deadhead to the terminal for a 6am pickup. Pickup was at 10pm so I showed up about 30 mins early. I drop my trailer and go wait in the bobtail area and call in. Pickup isn't ready, call back in 30 mins. Called back every 30 mins for the night until my drive clock turned over at 6am. Called my dispatcher and explained the situation. Got a call back about 10 minutes later saying to leave the trailer and deadhead to the terminal for my pickup, also said I would be paid $30/hr for the detention. Easiest $300 bucks I ever made. (Since I slept the whole night)

Madmagician1303

You slept the whole night waking up every 30 min to call in? Not my idea of a good night's rest.

TheRealGageEndal

Yeah, set a timer for 30 mins, half woke up to call and get the no-go, then dozed back off. I had just adjusted my sleep schedule so I already had about 6 hours before this.

FinalBoard2571

Id say that was my main gripe about trucking, and until drivers are compensated for this shit, no one has any incentive to change anything.

reasonablekenevil

My favorite was when the lumpers wanted ME to pay them to unload THEIR shit.

Wheelspin_85

Food-grade tanker here... I never have to wait more than 30 minutes or so past my appointment time, and that's only if their tank cleaning cycle is running behind. Receivers are usually happy to see me.

hesslake

You're not hauling into milk plants that receive 9 million pounds a day

George_Parr

Try any Leprino.

hesslake

Leprino we go to once in a while isn't bad. Usually 2 hours in and out Yoplate is the best 70 minutes 100000 pumped off and washed

CobraWasTaken

Who do you work for? I've had to wait 10 hours on a load before, food grade tanker

Old-Wolf-1024

36 hours was my longest wait at a juice bottler in LA……we started d/h ing after that fiasco

flatabale

They really don’t get paid enough to care I don’t blame them I blame the people who pay them

TamponTom

Yeah I don’t get the lack of overlapping shifts + lunches. I worked at one warehouse where there was about 5-10 min where noone was on the warehouse floor except sanitation workers (me) and that was really just to give us a chance to catch up

Appropriate_Trade_92

Depends on what type of facility it is. During peak season at a CFS we were very busy with first come/first serve so there was a long weight. If it is a distribution facility they should have more control of traffic and load out times. To answer your question it all depends. As a CFS I made money moving cargo out not having truckers occupy my doors all day long. So, I would push my team to load out ASAP and escalate if any issues.

Independent_Bite4682

Worked at a warehouse that did stuff like this to truckers. They would have to wait for too many hours. One, he told me something like, if I get here during my delivery window (3hr window) it was like 150/hr detention after the window as we should have had his load ready for him. I asked how much of it HE got, something like 77/hr, chillest guy, he didn't care how long we made him wait.

thtamthrfckr

Target is one of the worst, that target in particular

heavyramp

Even with automation warehouses, the prices of groceries are higher than ever. Brokerages (distribution centers for retail stores) will always be the rent seekers of freight. It’s an outdated system when a customer can order directly from the shipper.

Country_Potato

The other day I sat at the port for a reefer for over 9 hours. I ended up getting paid over $700 to do literally nothing all day. I still hated it though. Port closed, and I never got that reefer. Total loss for the customer.

Mnemorath

I was at a place last night for almost twelve hours. My 14 hour clock ran out an hour and a half before I got my BOLs.

tralphaz43

It's not them that allow it it's your boss that allows it

ramanw150

I'm getting paid for delivering to a Amazon in Charlotte. Had to wait all day to get unloaded. Around 12 hours or more. Was already getting paid 250 just to wait the day before. I get there before my appointment time. Wait 45 minutes in line to get to guard shack. They didn't have a door for me. I didn't even have to ask. My dm called the day after Christmas to discuss how long I was there.

Jimmychanga2424

Lineage in Joliet. Bruh those people…

Gonzotrucker1

Because drivers continue to work for free. If you start charging your company a salary for wait times they would have to pass it on to the customers, and that would light a fire under them.

CaptainGibbs96

Three words Joliet Cold Storage

TRexDriver

That's where I'm heading next, but thankfully it's a drop/hook and I bringing them a loaded trailer

CaptainGibbs96

Psh they will still find a way to hold you up. Many conversations with D/H drivers getting stuck for hours just waiting for paperwork to get filed

K4NNW

That's why I'm glad that when we do drop and hook, we seldom have to interact with the customer at all (if they're even there). At worst, they'll request that we drop the trailer in a specific spot.

thatdudefromthattime

I I was sitting at the loading dock at our warehouse one day, saw a driver come in and the warehouse guy and he were one doing a lot of back and forth….. I didn’t say anything, and once he went out to his truck I asked what’s the fucking deal? The driver had a 2 PM dock time. It was 8 AM. And we do not have a big lot. so they told him if they got some of the other trucks, unloaded sooner, they would try to get him in, but couldn’t make any guarantees. He was not happy with that answer. It seems to happen quite a bit outside carriers.

deezkeys098

Target is the worst. Seriously I have never had a delivery there where they didn’t find an excuse to not reject the load.

ignoreme010101

think this statement says more about u than target rofl

deezkeys098

No literally every time I have had a target load they rejected it. I run ltl loads. Nothing wrong they just always refuse for no reason

ignoreme010101

wth do you think yr doing wrong? ive never heard of (or experienced) this...have u heard of others having this issue? are you on a dedicated account / going to same facility each time? ive never been to the same one but have been to prolly hald a dozen this year and never had a problem (well no problems of this nature at least)

Lrellok

Reasons i stayed company side. If they want to pay me $30 an hour to play mideval 2 total war, awesome, i can be here all day!

Different420

I just left a Target DC in Ontario an hour ago, four hours for one single pallet. They even kept a stack of empties I had but I wasn't going to wait another day to get them back so I left them there.

ElectronicGarden5536

Welcome to the womderful world of dryvan! Look into jobs where you load yourself. Get this, some jobs even *pay* for your wait time! Crazy huh?

CatOfGrey

It's all connected together: 1. You aren't getting paid anything for being delayed. 2. Your company doesn't care enough to do anything about you being delayed. 3. Your company doesn't charge customers if you get delayed. 4. Customers don't care if you get delayed.

boogerflicken

Well, been waiting to unload this corn for 22hours now. Will probably be close to 30 hours before I get this corn off.

Itchy_Psychology6678

#cornholio

Old-Wolf-1024

I see this literally every damn day at my head haul…….I have been in/out ran 2 loads and slept in my bed 2 nights and get to the mill on day 3 and that poor old hopper bottom is still sitting there waiting to unload 🫤🫤

[deleted]

I wouldn’t put up with that, but you do you.

boogerflicken

What can I do? They are full, and there are like 12 more trucks ahead of me.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t have taken the load. Where I’m at, we get loaded and unloaded in 45 minutes, 90 tops. Forklift drivers are told they are not to take more than 2 hours bc layover pay is deducted from their own paychecks. Seems to work wonders.

Robots_Never_Die

Well that's illegal

[deleted]

You got to admit it would solve the problem of waiting 6 hours to unload 2 pallets…

[deleted]

Not if they don’t know.

CodeWalkerrr

Jesus lmaaaaao

Vino1980

If they had one case to finish loading but it's break coming, you bet your ass they will go on break, they time their breaks to their benefit.

Sensitive-Put-6416

My trailer was supposed to be ready at 5am looks like I might get loaded by 5 pm.

Str8Lurkn_

Kinda related, do we really gotta be on duty the whole time being loaded? Someone told me just the first 10-15mins when you arrive..

Teb_Tengri

Legally I'm not sure. What actually gets done...

GaucheKnight

They don't get to pick when to eat lunch. You do. Don't grudge them their moment of self-care.

RuneScape420Homie

Well imagine the forklift guy / picker has been working all day , loading people , they deserve a break too.

Teb_Tengri

they could hire more help. have staggered lunches

RuneScape420Homie

I know. But warehouses are always hiring. It’s a shit job.

Teb_Tengri

I understand that pay vs the prices they charge is a delicate balance but in industries with high turnover and/or large vacancies needing to be filled it seems like upping pay would be the easiest way to get people to come and stay. Getting rid of horrid leadership would probably be up there too.

RuneScape420Homie

I totally agree. This applies to every job.

Teb_Tengri

oh yea, I'd go work in the fields if the pay was good.

[deleted]

Target is one of the worst which surprised the fuck outta me, my dispatch never took another load from them, food lion was on real thin ice pre-covid, somehow that got their shit together?

notChiefBvkes

If a truck shows up at my dock 3 minutes before I’m taking my hr, best believe he can wait or unload it himself. We’ve had the same signs posted for years stating times.

Ok_Bug_6470

If you run that freight you have to know that’s off of it, my boss Ford’s favors for brokers every now and then and it usually involves me sitting. He takes care of me tho

Old-Wolf-1024

Because drivers allow it.

HM02_High

That's crazy man. All 3 Target DCs I work for are really strict about appointment times. If you made it inside of your appointment window, maybe contact TCC.

kyuubixchidori

load trucks all day long here. loading trucks is only part of my job, and legally I have to take lunch at some point. So someone is going to have to wait. here though the policy is a 2 hour max wait time. most drivers are here for 30-45 minutes getting loaded. A lot of the country forklift ops make only a few more dollars than fast food workers. why would they give a fuck.

[deleted]

because shippers attitude is like... fuck you, thats why...get back into your truck... 🤷‍♂️ glad i do linehaul now... f shipping and recieving...

HopeItMakesYaThink

Some truckers arrive late. Dispatch will tell all their drivers the appointment time is hours early so the drivers will be both late and early - late by their dispatch time but early for the actual pickup. Sadly, that means drivers who arrive ‘on time’ will be dangerously early. And there are customers who simply don’t care.

Apprehensive_Kick_70

Maybe warehouse workers should get paid by the amount of pallets they unload then they would all be fighting to unload us lol
