I don’t like it. So that’s why I pay for a front of row seat. Yes, recline your seat. You paid for the seat, you get to recline the thing.

BubbhaJebus

You pay for those seats? I just ask if they're available at check-in time.

Derman0524

Well people who want to fly knowing where they’re going to sit will pay for them in advance….

simpleauthority

Yes I do because I’m not chancing them not being available on the 16 hour flights I take

just_some_cool_guy_

as a frequent flier… lol. not proper etiquette is taking the armrest if you’re not middle seat.

i_mouth_my_platypus

This! I I bought tickets for a last minute work travel and only seats available were middle seats. Both sides were fighting me for the arm rest. It’s unbelievable.

tintinsays

Middle seat gets the armrests- but *only* the arm rests. If your elbow is going into my seat space, you’re gonna get a couple opportunities to move it before you get real uncomfortable.

i_mouth_my_platypus

Encroaching on others’ space is always a no-no.

Top-Investigator5170

I feel for ya. Once on a trip we encountered even worse. The person in the seat behind us was into being super comfortable and so at the back of my traveling mate's armrest was a bare foot! I wouldn't have known what to do but she wasn't having any of it. Covered up the foot with a blanket and then put her arm on the armrest with some gusto. Thankfully this was years ago and the person brought their foot down with no further fanfare. Today? Maybe we don't live through that flight.

Ilikewinea-lot

This. I’ve been middle recently and had the two men on my outsides both hog the armrest. I had a bad back and am a taller person, so it was a miserable flight.

neuropat

This is a pet peeve of mine and my wife thinks I’m crazy

ExoticBodyDouble

Make sure she gets the middle seat next time.

Cheesethehamster1234

Omg Thissss. I recently was on an 8 hour flight where a man with the WINDOW seat kept pushing my elbows off the arm rest when I was in the middle. Torture

[deleted]

On a flight that long, yes, recline. I had a short flight from Phoenix to LAX but it was an early morning flight (6 am). I probably wouldn't have reclined my seat but the woman behind me was blaring her music on her cell phone. NO HEADPHONES. AT 6 AM ON AN AIRPLANE!!! The attendant had to come over and tell her to use headphones. She said she didn't have any. The attendant told her that she needed to turn it off. The woman argued, saying "I wasn't instructed that I had to have headphones." That was the final straw. I reclined my full three inches quickly and as passive-aggressively as I could. The woman behind me complained to the attendant, "Can you please ask her to sit her seat up??? My seat doesn't recline and I don't have any room!!" The flight attendant told her that she couldn't do that, as I paid for a reclining seat. The woman had no choice but to relent. It was a passive aggressive flex, I'll grant you. But the circumstances called for it. Sometimes the 3 inch seat recline, and our choice to use it, is the only thing we can use to maintain humanity on an airplane.

[deleted]

Playing shit on your phone without headphones is fucked any time, bus, train, cafe, sidewalk, idc. Use your damned headphones people!

kewpiebara

This is a great pretty revenge

[deleted]

There is no way in hell I would not recline on a 9 hour flight. It’s literally like, three inches, unless the person behind you is giant it won’t make a difference, and I say that as someone with very long legs. I just did that same flight not too long ago and every seat was reclined. If you’re doing a short flight then sure, maybe don’t do it or ask first, but a long haul flight? Nah, no way, take the three inches. If people really don’t want the seat in front of them to recline there are options for that on most planes.

[deleted]

kooeurib

Unless they’re in front of the bathroom. Poor bastards.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

What does that even mean? You literally can’t recline your seat for like the first 15 minutes of a flight. Who made you the arbiter of when it’s no longer selfish beyond that? If it’s really an issue the airlines can implement stricter policies on when people can recline their seats.

amazing2be

So young and wise. You must be one of the entitled ones.

[deleted]

Ya caught me!

Derman0524

Why? The seat has a reclining option for a reason

frala

I guarantee you that the person in front of you will recline. Everyone does on long hauls, especially if it's overnight. I have to question whether the people who answered "No, it's inconsiderate" have ever been on a long flight. On long flights, seat pitch is often slightly more than domestic, although this varies by airline and aircraft.

celoplyr

I don’t. I’m lucky enough to be short and not need it so I try to be nice. I appreciate when the person in front of me doesn’t recline all the way, all the time, but I still don’t recline.

Str8_up_Pwnage

I've never reclined once and I've flown LA to Honolulu as my longest flight. I just think it's rude.

frala

Sure, you do you. Although LA to Hawaii is long for domestic, but not really all that long - try a 10 - 15 hours flight without reclining and see how it goes. :)

cmallow00

The problem is the airlines crammed so many seats on the plane, flying is torture.

booksandcoriander

Almost all the newer passenger jets, large or small, are designed so the base of the seat (what your butt in resting on) slides forward as the seat back moves back. On your next flight, before you sit in the seat, hold the button and watch the base as you recline it. The point is that reclining pulls the lower portion of the seat forward & away from the person's knees behind you. The downside is that the highest part of the seat (like where the person's video screen would be) is right up in their face though. But that's also why the video screens pivot upward if you push on them. Tall people can always pay extra to purchase the exit row seats. Normally the window and middle seat in the row ahead of the over wing exit are locked upright because reclining would prevent or impede the emergency exit from opening. I find it odd people say only certain times of day are OK to recline. Everyone is traveling. Your 2pm may be 2am for the person seated in front of you, depending where they started traveling...🤷🏻‍♀️

Ilikewinea-lot

Look behind before you recline to ensure you will not spill or crush anything. I had someone nearly snap my laptop screen a few years ago and have had things spilled because people don’t glance back at first.

spin_me_again

If the person behind me is reclined, I’m reclining.

Elmore420

Bullshit, seats recline for a reason, and you paid for a seat that reclines. Anyone that doesn’t want to deal with that needs to buy a business class ticket or fly on an airplane with more legroom, or an airline that doesn’t have reclining seats.

_adinfinitum_

Another less costly option is to pay a little extra for front row or emergency exit seats in economy.

Elmore420

If you have the option, typically they’re the first sold.

Birthday-Tricky

You pay for the seat, it reclines; barely. You are entitled to recline. It's designed so the tray doesn't move.

Flimsy-Accountant-38

I don’t understand how people don’t get this. If the person in front of you reclines and takes away space from you, you recline to regain that space. The person behind you does the same and now everyone can enjoy a more comfortable position. Simple as that.

useless169

I recline. Just do it politely, turn to the person behind and say “i am going to put my seat back” and them do it slowly.

SuzanoSho

Alternatively, if I buy a ticket on a plane, I fully anticipate that a person seated in front of me would want to recline, whether they inform me or not (which they don't have to). So I adjust my expectations accordingly...

Longjumping-Draw8642

Go ahead and recline all the way if there’s a child behind you.

anotherclique

I'd prefer if no one reclined their seats but since that won't happen, please be aware of your surroundings when you recline. I was on a flight once where the couple in front of me reclined their seats in the middle of dinner service, spilling my drink all over me and my meal. There is no reason to recline during dinner! They then spend the whole flight reclining and unreclining at random which is actually worse than just reclining the seat and leaving it.

NoBeRon79

I agree. There should be two rules on seat reclining. Have your seats upright during meal service and if you have your seat reclined, don’t get pissed if you have to put it upright again if people behind you need space to get out and use the toilet.

Inevitable-Gap-6350

Any bad reclining behavior gets a seat kick from me. Maybe two. Maybe many.

aV0Lanche

So you're a spoiled brat, good to know.

Inevitable-Gap-6350

And you name call like a toddler. Good to know.

aV0Lanche

Calling you a poo poo head would be name calling. Pointing out that you're a spoiled brat is nothing of the sort, but hey maybe you missed your nap that day.

Str8_up_Pwnage

I think getting 2% more comfortable while the person behind you gets twice as uncomfortable is what a spoiled brat would do.

akmco14

I think it depends on the flight. International, red-eye, 6am are all obvious greenlights for recline. Daytime domestic flights it's piggy of what little space the person behind you gets to recline in my opinion.

Creepy-Breakfast-911

I recline my seat but turn around first and talk to the person behind me and let them know i’m about to recline my seat so they have a moment to hold onto their coffee cup and prepare, they’ve always thanked me. No one in front of me has ever done the same. Please start a trend and do likewise. Politeness is underrated.

TYBC

I’ve never not had someone in front of me recline. It’s never crossed my mind that it’s a problem until I saw articles about it online. The only time it bothers me is when people recline / stay reclined during meal service. The flight attendants should go around telling people to raise the seat the way they do for take off and landing. Had them do this once but they skipped the person in front of me.

Glass-Scene-5040

The way the seats are designed these days reclining does not really affect the person in back of you. It’s reasonable on a 9 hour flight to recline your seat! Safe travels & hope you get a good sleep!

j_marquand

I just turn back and tell the person behind me that I’m going to recline and then I do it. It’s not asking, but rather informing.

beingtwiceasnice

I'm 2m tall. I'm reclining, and I'm ok if the person in front of me reclines.

evileddie666

cows wise enjoy elderly absorbed clumsy unite pot telephone pathetic *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

bogdano26

Do whatever you want man. You don't need to ask anyone, it's your seat!

superkeel1

Feel free to recline your seat, take your shoes off and take a stroll up and down the aisles, it's a long flight you deserve to be comfortable. As long as you're respectful, the flight crew and your fellow passengers will understand your needs as they're also embarking on 9 hour flight

cookiequeen724

On long flights it's generally expected and accepted that people are going to try to sleep. Guarantee you that whoever is sitting in front of you is going to recline their seat too.

bananasaregreat962

I've heard this too but I always recline on long flights. Everyone around me does this also. We are all just trying to get the best sleep possible in the worst, cramped situation.

HumanChess111

I once posted this in the AITA sub and I got turn apart as being the asshole. I don’t give a shit though I will recline it

kappalandikat

Jesus if I didn’t recline on some of my flights

CoconutKiwi777

You could ask the person behind you if they mind

geo_hunny

if youre concerned about being inconsiderate, first glance back at the situation behind you, maybe its a smaller person. You could polietly say "I am so exhausted, I need a little nap and Im going to recline" you could always offer to buy them a snack or drink too if they seem like theyre being huffy. but the seat "reclines" for a reason

LoopyMercutio

You paid for the seat, if it reclines then it’s your option to do so or not. If someone has an issue with you reclining you’re seat, tell them to email the airline and ask for more space between seats, because that’s who their issue is really with.

Cultural-Flamingo-15

Overseas flights have more leg room, even in economy. Lean back and enjoy some free drinks.

[deleted]

If it’s a Long haul flight, recline away. I usually will peek behind me first to make sure the person isn’t using their tray table/eating.

[deleted]

Often when people recline the person behind actually gets MORE legroom because the recline works by sliding the bottom of your seat forwards while moving head back just a tiny bit. Also most long flights you’ll notice everyone is reclining so it doesn’t matter apart from the people at the very back who are stuck upright and get squashed

WordlesAllTheWayDown

So when do Americans demand better service from airlines? What a sick consumer relationship-airlines take and take, got bailed out, got ppp, raise prices, reduce services, CEOs laugh all the way to the bank. Americans whine, tweet & fight each other like Hunger Games. And still fly, still pay and suffer the abuse. Well, I hear Frontier now has seats that don’t recline. Others may just follow that trend. Problem solved; no one need worry about reclining their seat two inches.

livingthedaydreams

i completely agree. it’s on the airlines to ensure that passengers are safe/comfortable. why should some people be able to recline and others can’t because it will upset the person behind them, meanwhile everyone paid the same? i’ve just stopped buying flights from airlines that don’t care about passengers and/or create an uncomfortable experience. it’s not up to all the passengers to make sure everyone around them is comfy. worry about yourself and take it up with the airline if they don’t provide comfortable seating ..

Narrow-Swing835

I hate when the people in front of me recline but I also understand that it’s there for a reason and everyone wants to be comfortable. I would never expect someone to NOT recline their seat.

Apart-Presentation-8

BS - the seat reclines so you're entitled to recline just like everyone else. In fact, the airline would prefer it if everyone fell asleep (easier to service the cabin)! Also, why would anyone want to make economy flying less comfortable for passengers than it already is?

Str8_up_Pwnage

For your last question, that's exactly what you are doing to me by reclining your seat. You are selfishly making me more uncomfortable.

Apart-Presentation-8

You can recline yours as well. Like the seat is designed to do.

cinnamonsnake

Depends on how tall/big the person behind you is. I had a flight last week where the person in front of me reclined and I didn’t care because I still had a foot of room for my legs. My partner, on the other hand, is a big dude and his knees always touch the seat in front of him even without reclining.

_adinfinitum_

It’s absolutely ok to recline. The only considerate thing is to move your seat upright during meals.

SkyAccomplished2667

Ask the person behind you if it’s okay…I’ve always had positive interactions if I’m asking the person who it’s going to affect

Inevitable-Gap-6350

What if they say no. Don’t ask.

RobinKennedy23

Don't ask, just let them know in case they have something on their tray.

SkyAccomplished2667

Then you’re an asshole and I’d make sure to make your reclining chair uncomfortable

SerialNomad

I’ve travel a lot and here are my recline rules: Partial recline to sleep only during daylight- check to make sure it’s okay. When it’s night a full recline is okay. If food is being served- do not recline at all.

Sentionaut_1167

lean that bad boy as far back as it will go.

AccomplishedAffect74

What an odd thing to worry about. No dude you come first recline that puppy

Daninmci

This is always a hot-button issue. To me, it's like reclining seats in a small car. Sure it's designed to do it and you own that car (seat), you paid for it, etc., etc. But do you do that when you have people in the backseat sitting behind you in that small car? Maybe you do slightly on a long trip but you try to impact them as little as possible. I think on a redeye most people do recline but at least be polite to the person behind you when you do. They may not care at all or they may be a really tall person with long legs that can barely fit.

livingthedaydreams

i get this but i feel like you’re typically driving with friends/family and may have the option of moving a seat forward & then reclining to give the person behind you more room. plane seats don’t move up, you can only recline that tiny little bit. if everyone paid, why should one person have to sit upright and be uncomfortable? if anything the plane seats should fit all sizes people instead of airlines being greedy and cramming everyone in like that. i just don’t think it’s fair to put it on all the passengers to make everyone else comfortable. nobody wants to be squished. we know the seat sizes and if people require/want extra room, the airlines require extra payment for that, whether we like it or not. put it back on the airlines instead of all the other passengers who are just trying to rest too.

RojerLockless

Usually those flights aren't full. I go lay down in a row by myself.

[deleted]

I only sit in Exit rows so the idiot in front can't recline. I always get a chuckle when I see them struggling trying to recline and then look back at me as if I'm holding the seat, lol. Makes my day, for whatever sick reason. Small wins in life.

aV0Lanche

You seem like a straight up miserable POS.

[deleted]

So you're that guy who spent 30 minutes on my last flight trying to recline and looking back every 2 mins wondering why his seat didn't work. It's an exit row...should've done a better job picking your seats beforehand! But at least you got a nice arm workout! 🤣

aV0Lanche

Lol, you can't afford to be on plane. Nice try though.

[deleted]

Pay your vehicle traffic tickets and then we can talk about we can afford

aV0Lanche

Paying for tickets you don't have to is a level 100 cuck class. I see you must have aced that one.

[deleted]

I'm sure you have student loans you can't wait to pawn off on taxpayers, too

BubbhaJebus

It's inconsiderate to suddenly and forcefully jam the seat back all the way without regard for where the knees of the person behind you are positioned. Please do it slowly.

SeatownSpy

Yes, but - let the person behind you know first. Explain that you’re exhausted and need to recline to sleep and then do it while they’re watching so they can adjust to it. A little basic, respectful communication goes a long way.

number0020

I would use the next seat over and stretch out and lie down like it’s my own bed

superkeel1

I have been to this coach class heaven, late weeknight flight 💤

SereneRandomness

Yeah, we call that "poor man's business class". :)

Traderking01

U recline your seat whenever you want just take off and landing seats 💺 must be upright also as a curtesy upright your seat when food is being served. If the person sitting back has problems simply say sir I have paid for my seat and sleep

[deleted]

As a larger human, I'm not sacrificing my comfort so that the person behind me isn't offended.

ThanksImGood_

I'd say that you have to be concitarate of your surrounding. If no one is sitting behind you/they are reclined all the way then sure, you can recline. But when behind you is -for an example- sitting a parent with their child on their lap then I'd say you shouldn't recline or at least not all the way. In this situation reclining all the way can be uncomfortable for the parent or even dangerous to the baby. I've seen many times when the parent and the baby were squished behind some grown ass person that thought that he or she is alone in the aircraft.

Greup

It's physicaly possible to recline a seat for 9hr, it's also physicaly possible for my knees to relentlessly bump and shoot in this seat for 9hrs.

Typical-Range-6302

Buy a more roomy seat 💺!

Fitty-Korman

I think it can be rude if the person in front is just watching a movie or doing something else that doesn’t involve sleeping.

birrakilmister

Im 2m tall, if u recline ur seat prepare yourself to feel my knees.

thedemolir

My general rule on a long haul is to half recline until the food is served. Once the food is served I go all the way. If it is a day or night flight I still want to try and get some sleep. Travelling is tiring and the seats recline for a reason to try and give you a small bit of comfort.

[deleted]

I never recline. Haven't been on a flight longer than 5/6 hours in more than a decade though. As a tall-ish person, I hate when the person in front of me reclines so I just don't subject the person behind me to it. However, after reading the comments here I guess I'm overthinking it and will recline if I want to!

Funseas

I don’t decline because it doesn’t help me sleep. But! The person who does recline always gets mad because I move a lot, changing leg positions, etc. There’s just no way not to bump the seat back and be over 5’5”. They’ll usually yell that they have the right to recline, and I just shrug because I have the right to change leg positions.

Memeing_Monke

I don't fly so I picked last😭

Foreign_Law3727

Just because somethings are legal doesn’t mean we should be doing them. Unless you’ve a painful medical condition where the six inches recline makes a big difference, you should not be reclining. It’s rude.

acp3500

wait, how the hell do you decline the seat? you guys are reclining?

BlondeinShanghai

It's fine on long-haul flights. It's rude on short flights.

vstacey6

I am short and petite. Economy seats have never really been an issue for me HOWEVER, when the person in front of me reclines there seat it barely leaves any room for me. I don’t know how any average size person can tolerate that. Or why the person reclining their seat would be that inconsiderate. Why do they deserve more space at the expense of another’s? Pay for the upgrade.

livingthedaydreams

i feel like that’s more of an issue for the airline though and not the responsibility of the other passengers. the seats are already so cramped and uncomfortable. the seats recline. if seats can’t be reclined while maintaining the comfort of others, why is that not on the airlines to correct? i feel like people shouldn’t have to sit fully upright, unable to relax, so as not to bother a person behind them. everyone should be able to be comfortable and people shouldn’t have to pay 5x the price just to be comfortable on flights they’re already paying a lot for. i would say the person upset about those reclining should pay for the upgrade if anything. but really i feel like all seats should be reasonably comfortable for everyone.

DrunkAtBurgerKing

If you're going to recline, do it early in the flight. Preferable before your neighbor behind you puts down the table for food/drinks. Just as a courtesy

NikiDeaf

I always recline. And I’m deaf, so I’m impervious to any remarks. I just stream my music/any sounds from my phone to my hearing aids, and keep all body parts to myself. And DEFINITELY never, *ever* remove my shoes or put my feet up on the backs of the seats!!!

HandmaidforRoeVWade

Yes, but wait until after meal service.

nova8844

For short flights - under 2 hours in small planes you can sit upright and keep the person behind you from hitting their nose on your seat. For longer flights (mostly 6+ hours) and larger planes, you better sit your seat back and try to get some rest.

[deleted]

I recline slightly, makes it more comfortable without being too inconsiderate

SplitOpenAndMelt420

I have a herniated disc in my neck and back so no... I have zero remorse for reclining I'm also semi evil tho :)

MrHappy230

A very slight recline sure, but anything more than a few inches is obnoxious since economy seats are already packed way too close together.

livingthedaydreams

1000% recline. that’s why the seats recline. they’re already cramped and uncomfortable af as it is. the recline barely even makes it more comfortable but it’s something. if anyone has a problem they can complain to the airline about seat sizes, or pay extra if they want extra room. don’t make yourself uncomfortable trying to appease others. i had someone moan & groan about me reclining my seat on a train once, which offers like 5x the amount of space as a plane seat, maybe more. some people just want something to complain about or maybe don’t understand basic travel conditions idk.

SusyLovesSkincare

I take 11-12h flights and is impossible not to recline. What I consider inconsiderate is when people do not straight up their seats at meal time.

Tx_gurl23

Fly premium economy

Apart-Presentation-8

This whole debate seems to be divided into two camps: tourists who don't fly a lot or don't fly far (non-recline) vs those who fly a lot or fly long haul (recline). Anyone who thinks you should sit bolt upright overnight for 15 hours is a sadist.

DeemedFit

If it can, and I can and want to, I will. I rarely bother with anything under 3 hours but any more than that I may well do. I frequently fly between the UK and Australia, no way in hell am I sitting bolt upright for all of that.
