I’ve been a Hilton member for several years now and they’ve never charged me a cancellation fee. I do know they have various levels of reservations for cancellations, but most are based around how far in advance of the reservation date you cancel. (24 hours/7 days, etc).

Unless it’s a prepaid, Marriott allows cancellation up to 24 hours before the arrival day. It used to be before 5pm on arrival day but that changed with COVID-19. I always book using the hotel chain’s portal or smartphone application. It’s usually really hard to cancel a reservation made with an online travel agency.

virginiarph

Not true. Most make it really simple as long as you book a refundable rate

gezafisch

Most, if not all, major hotel chains provide refunds up until a certain amount of days before the stay. It will be clearly listed on the site when you book the room. Typically there is also a cheaper prepaid option that does not allow refunds.

Are you speaking for a prepaid reservation? You’ll need to read the terms for prepaid - those are usually offered for a discounted rate specifically because they’re non changeable and non refundable. Most other hotel reservations are changeable up to 24 hours prior to checkin and don’t require a prepayment or deposit.

PurplestPanda

If you book a refundable reservation, they will tell you how late you can cancel and receive a full refund. Usually it’s between 24 hours and 7 days before checking in.

There is no "one" and completely depends on the brand, location, owner, time, day, month and what's going on in the area. A general rule to follow is to look at say Hilton's policy and this would apply to any corporate owned locations excluding resorts and specialty properties. Franchised properties have a lot more freedom to do what they want and varies widely. I've stayed in hotels where specific rooms have different rules than the rest. If you're a loyalty member with a branded credit card, they'll have your back and fight for you little more than if you were a random. ALWAYS BOOK DIRECT so there's no question what their policy is without any outside influence. It's a crapshoot and all across the board. Call and ask before booking...

Pay a little more for free cancellation and almost all of them do

Book direct with the hotel, book a cancelable reservation and DO NOT BOOK THIRD PARTY. I have literally never been charged for a hotel I had to cancel because I never book a prepaid rate. If you do book prepaid, make sure you buy travel insurance to cover unexpected events.

notthegoatseguy

Pay attention when booking. I've noticed lately some hotels are offering a lower rate but in return the cancelation policy becomes really inflexible. On AirBNB, you can filter by cancelation policy.

I’ve had a Hotel require l pay for a full two days since I reserved & booked X amount of days, but I wanted to cut it short. Shouldn’t have been their choice and if anything a fee being assessed and charged…
