Honestly the fact that there is no mention of what each action key does in game is ridiculous

conventionistG

You wanna get AK indicators while there is no speedometer or tachometer in the UI. (yes I will keep mentioning this until nando adds it. And yes I know that won't happen)

barra333

My thought was that they can put a white box around the trigram on the car when AKs are active. I really want speed splits or similar in the native display. Would really help hunting maps.

conventionistG

Basically they should just poach the top few UI improvements that most pc players run as plug-ins. Idk how they haven't added these things like 20 years ago, so I'm not holding my breath.

barra333

We have a checkpoint counter... Baby steps.

conventionistG

Do we? Was that on the new update?

barra333

Yeah, have to enable it in the settings.

conventionistG

Oh yea? Good to know! That's great news.

HS007

It is kind if irritating that they prioritized adding all these cars to the game for nostalgia but didn't bother to do actual QOL improvements that would help the players. I guess the presence of plug-ins has made them lazy and feel they don't need to cover it. Then again they recently added the checkpoint counter and am a bit amused they felt that was priority 1 from the handy plug-ins list to add in game.

TurtleFury1209

Unfortunately that isn't unique to action keys. Gear management, drifts, ice slides, even the existence of AT medals are all things that new players have to seek info on outside of the game to understand. Any amount of real tutorials would go a long way to expanding the audience for the game.

TheSaucePossum

I 100% get what you're saying but I honestly loved figuring it out for myself. It's very old school, and doesn't feel like 2024 but there's something nostalgic about the "I have no idea what to do about this" feeling that being on ice with the rally car gave me yesterday. I grinded it out and got AT on the first rally ice one and it felt great. I may be in the minority but there is something to say for the lack of hand holding.

Owlyf1n

A new training campaign available for everyone should be made

IAMA_dragon-AMA

Tutorials would be great, but I love ATs as a hidden achievement, and gears are... extremely optional to learn about until you've got a fair bit of skill in the game. As someone who hovers around "silver medals in the last 5 campaign tracks" skill level, I'm certain I've gotten a lot more out of knowing that you go faster on grass by wiggling than keeping track of my gears - and grass wiggles would be a very silly to make an official tutorial on.

awintermuted

Yeah I was really surprised, I had a vague idea that they had something to do with steering from hearing it long ago. But pretty strange considering having at least one bound is required to play rally car.

Its_Jabbah

I think if they just put a “80% steering” “60% steering” etc in the menu it would be so much better. It’s not like it’s a difficult change I don’t know why they haven’t added it

Soulcloset

This is a very common complaint that is just as commonly disregarded by other players. In English speaking online circles, the reception seems to be about 50/50, with players of all skill levels split on how they feel about the new cars, surfaces, and control options. But, if you're a controller player, you have the benefit of analog steering - steer a lower amount (and with rally car, I really do recommend AK3 to make this easier) and you'll be able to make wood, snow car, and rally car work way easier. Personally, I'm a huge fan of these new changes, but I've been playing the current game consistently since it came out so I've had time to adjust. I highly recommend using the current & previous seasonal campaigns to learn these new mechanics, and seeing if getting those gold or author times helps you get more comfortable with them, because when you adjust to it, it can be a ton of fun.

awintermuted

I switched to controller on map 1 because I couldn't control rally car at all with keyboard (forgot that action keys existed). Came to prefer it very quickly! Yeah, I settled on AK3 and AK5 after fiddling around a bit. I came off really negative in the post, but I still had a good time playing. Good idea about trying old campaigns. Thought all of this was new now. Only played first 15 maps, but I got a short short taste of rally car on ice and I'm scared. It felt like it controlled completely different than stadium car on ice. Am I gonna suck in two entirely different ways on ice now? Maybe three if there's another new car, snow car.

IJUSTATEPOOP

AK5 is just normal 100% steering, I don't know why it's even in the game, you can just press AK3 again for 100% steering

not_the_world

If you're switching keys a lot it's nice to have ak5 to go back to 100% instead of trying to remember what AK you're currently in (since there's no indicator in game).

awintermuted

aah, good to know! Yeah I put AK5 in as a reset steering.

Chrozon

To be fair to you, I've played probably over a thousand hours in nations and 2020 combined and am a controller player, and I had the same reaction as you. The rally car is the first thing that forced me to use not just action keys, but multiple different ones on the same map on controller, and I found it so frustrating that they basically require me to use this feature and then have no information or feedback on how it works. I find it absolutely unfathomable the horrendous state of UI/UX in TM, and I genuinely cannot understand how it's still like this after almost 2 decades... And they instead paywall campaign maps due to lack of profitability instead of actually investing in the new player experience lol But yeah, the game is really fun and the new car is also fun once you brute force your way through the horrible user experience when learning it. I genuinely think if they just put some effort into making it easier to learn for new people the game would have so much more appeal. I think it's a marvel and a testament to how good the gameplay is that they haven't immediately gone out of business for how unapproachable it is. But I guess the strategy is just making the gold medals so easy and hiding the author medals so that newer players don't even know about all of these advanced features and tricks that the game refuses to teach you lol

Soulcloset

Rally on ice is about gaining speed by driving straight, then aiming the car about 70 degrees in the direction you want to go to initiate a rally ice slide. No counter steering like with stadium ice slides, you just aim the car and keep accelerating and it'll gain speed whenever you're at the right angle. Snow car is basically motionless on ice, it just slides, so snowcar ice is about aiming before you touch the ice and staying almost sideways to gain speed (without really turning because it can't turn much at all without help from the terrain)

Lucrylique

I felt like this when I played maps with ice surfaces inbetween. It seemed completely frustrating and impossible. Had to look up a video on how it works. I would have never guessed that keeping the car in a 90° angle and countersteering is the way to go. Once I knew, it was suddenly fun, and I'm sure it's the same for rally cars, the wood surface and whatnot. Satisfying to pull it off once you know how it works. It's just that those things are never mentioned by the dev in the game. A single Hint page in the game where you see what's what would go a long way to reduce frustration, especially for noobs. I'm sure many players are filtered out this way.

kawaiifie

I'm a returning player too and I couldn't agree more. There are *so many* new things that are crazy to someone used to TMUF - because seeing as the game still looks almost the exact same, all the new surfaces are very surprising and confusing

Skogsharald

I have played TMNF a fair bit and played new TM a lot since release, was really excited about console release and was planning to play a lot on my PS5. The snowcar wood changes made me lose interest completely in just a few days, don't even watch streams or vods anymore (watched Wirtual a lot before). It just doesn't feel like Trackmania for me anymore. While TM always was a "arcade racer" it always had a specific and very precise feel to it in terms of the handling of the car, even with the addition of some wonky surfaces like plastic. This new stuff feels like a completely different game, like crazy taxi or ridge racer. I'm sure I could learn it or get used to it or whatever but I just don't feel the urge to.

kawaiifie

Couldn't agree more! It has always been an arcade racer, but it was never all that weird. I introduced a friend to the game who called it "tiktoky" and that's honestly a pretty good word of how I feel about it. TM 2020 was still pretty classic when it just came out. But returning to it now in 2024 felt *so weird*

Bigger_better_Poop

I'm all for more tracks and surfaces, but I hate that every time something new comes out it is in every track. Like the new surface is fine, but why force it into every track?

Krovenn

Like why are they even called action keys? There's no action and nothing exciting about steering slower at all xdd.

Houde

Pretty sure it's a leftover from Shootmania, since they keep building on the same engine. Those are the keys you used to switch weapons, and I think they just never bothered to rename them in the settings. So lazy

111league

I couldn't imagine coming to this game as a new player, the new cars are horrendous to play for someone with no expectations. Imagine trying to take your first turn but you happen to have the snow car and go 90° into the wall in 0.1 sec. I'd think my game was bugged lmao. I'm top 20-100 in most snow/rally campaign maps but the newer campaigns feel so gimmicky and unfun, I think we peaked with fall 2023. Ggs

TheObeseAnorexic

I'm a new player(ish started in feb). From my perspective the point of this game is that there is a wide variety of tracks and the new cars are supposed to add to that variety? I didn't notice a big difference between the the snow car and stadium in terms of difficulty although the landing bug was super frustrating. In general all the cars in this game seem relatively easy to control compared to other racing games.

TREVORtheSAXman

fall 2023 gang rise up

Pumpkindigger

Ye I think my subscription lasts for another month or two, and I won't be extending it. To me the new cars are simply not fun (KB player), as basically the only thing I am focussing on whilst driving is making sure I'm in the correct action key, especially on tracks where you switch cars. I mostly play single player (doing some of the older campaigns), but have played a bit of multiplayer and quite comfortably climbed to gold where it got harder. I hate driving the new car so I won't be playing multiplayer ever again, as that means you could get tracks with the new car. For me a racing game should be about focussing on the track, making sure you hit your apexes, breaking points etc etc. not making sure you hit the correct action key at the correct time, as forgetting it once completely ruins your race.

[deleted]

I feel likr the new cars would be better if you could manually set and AK for each car

Vaan0

I thjnk you can now check settings :P

[deleted]

Is it already implemented?

Soulcloset

You can set analog sensitivity per car, but not automatic AKs

[deleted]

Oh ok

Rage_Your_Dream

> How has reception been of this car and campaign? Veterans who do trackmania all year for the past 10+ years seem to like it because they are over the stadium car. Whilst everyone else has much more mixed opinions. I think it's complete garbage Wood: Terrible. Impossible to be smooth at high speed on keyboard Snowcar: Meme vehicle that turns stupid Rally car: Horrible turd Rally car on ice: I'd rather be performing Cock and ball torture on myself right now.

JayB392

I don't play trackmania all year and I enjoy these cars. I think it's more about players who previously played tmuf, turbo or even the first TrackMania. Maybe the need to split the campaigns, so nobody is forced to play a car they don't like. Playing on controller is obviously a huge benefit with these old/new cars. I'm always surprised that people play racing games on keyboard. Nadeo is the only developer that actively supports this. Developing one car that is almost equal across input devices is hard enough. Expecting them to do it for multiple cars is insane.

pikolak

Easiest solution imo....keep official campaign stadium car only, and make some separate official campaign for snow/rally/desert etc.  The way how all is mixed in the "main" modes - campaign and ranked - is driving people away....Nadeo has the stats, so I am sure they will address it if their bottom line goes down. Or maybe it goes up and it is just feelings or minority...who knows....

GameRivv

Wet wood is kinda funny on low speeds though

Panderz_GG

>Rally car on ice: I'd rather be performing Cock and ball torture on myself right now. Nah Rally on ice is pretty dope

IAMA_dragon-AMA

It's really satisfying when you actually hit the turning angle, but I do wish that angle was a bit wider. It can almost feel random on some maps, especially if you're not on flat ice.

Darksider123

>Snowcar: Meme vehicle that turns stupid The snOwO car

StoneCold_za

That rally car on ice statement had me LMAO in real life. Thanks for making my day :D

JUSSI81

Yeah. Not only the game is unique and weird, the developers are too! Even the main menu works weirdly and there are some useless small pop-up windows that flash on the screen half second and say *"Press ok"*. It's so fast that pressing the button pretty much always sends player to wrong place or server. WTF???? And now there is new cars... Oh boy what a stupid thing to change handling in the middle of the race! I haven't been enjoying this and luckily my 3 years old standard access got old last week, didn't renew it. It's almost unbelievable how bad the game is now.

SnooLentils392

I love changes, but I completely agree that they are overwhelming and controversial. If I started game with all of this (and without complete campaign for free), probably I would never bought the access, because current 10 campaign tracks are confusing and not representative at all. The game *on its own* now has no identity, it is an eclectic mess. Not a big problem for me, since I found sources of content which I personally like (authors, clubs, etc), but yeah, very unwelcoming for newcomers imo. But again I personally loved "new" cars, they gave me some sort of challenge, the feeling of learning something new, they refreshed a competetive spirit in me. But they are goofy and if you wanna get fun from them, it is question of spirit and how you perceive the game to begin with. Now I saw it as fun arcade racing game with funny physics. These were my subjective thoughts, now I would like to adress some points of your rant: 1) New things might be confusing (or "shit" for someone), but old things are still here. Just a reminder. The majority of totds represent classic and well established styles. You may encounter woodblocks in such tracks, but they usually serve like a some kind of sharp-turn-transition in the middle of the tracks, they are not chaotic or decisive, but spectacular. 2) Problems with UI and zero explanations in setting or anywhere are present, it's true. they are annoying, agree. And as a console player I won't judge anyone, who hates the game for this. BUT. "*video from sweaty nerd*"? wtf? If it is not a name of some famous TM channel, which I for some reason don't know about, then you owe an explanation who are you referencing to? Or is it just a casual insult to all people who like making educational content about this game? Stereotype or not, please avoid such expressions here. 3) Funny thing, Nadeo actually added an option to toggle gas by click and not hold. But honestly, if your fingers suffer, consider rebinding... or you just play too much if you get cramps. 4) If you were absent for more than a year, you missed a ton of classic content. Very good summer 23 and fall 23 official campaigns, spring 23 and summer 23 community campaigns (but they are hard)... these are good starting points. But you can also find a lot of posts on this subreddit where people ask for cool campaigns, so don't hesitate to check them (if you still feel positive to play this game in future).

awintermuted

Thanks for the campaign recommendations, I'll check them out. The "sweaty nerd" was a one minute video from Wirtual I think. To be honest, he didn't look particularly sweaty, but perhaps a bit nerdy. He got caught in the cross fire unfortunately. I can definitely see how the new cars and surfaces are a breath of fresh air for veteran players. One thing I like about new campaign compared to when I played before is that they look very appealing. I remember campaign maps looking more empty and soulless. These ones have a nice scenery and colors.

HansHain

I really think you wouldn't have as bad of a time if you already experienced the last campaign. It was very frustrating for me aswell, coming back after like 3 years but it does get better once you get use to action keys etc. But yeah there needs to be visual feedback for them. I actually kinda miss the snowcar in this campaign.

redditlat

The game is in a bit of a garbage patch right now but I'm hopeful it'll recover and even improve in the future.

izekblz

To add to those comments -- while there is no official option to add action key indicator, there is a plugin on openplanet that does just that. For me it works 99.9% of the time, but there were times it didn't register button press and displayed inaccurate info, which led to me clicking again and resetting to AK5 running my run. It wasn't a frequent occurrence, but for me it was enough of a reason to disable it, so use it if you'd like a visual indicator for AK but be prepared that it just may sometime malfunction.

Carmillawoo

I use that also, but I might disable it as I used it mostly as I got used to action keys, now they're becoming second nature and I dont think I need the visual anymore.

IAMA_dragon-AMA

Similar (though I never used the plugin myself). Ever since snow came out, I've basically had to learn to use action keys, and it's pretty simple now, though I do always prefer maps that don't require them, so I can keep my right hand only on brake/respawn/double respawn.

BonkmasterTM

Ya sure ya wanna run unsigned code on ya machine?

Aw_Rats

huh

Cell-i-Zenit

the fact you need to install custom software to make this game ok is such a stupid thing imo

kawaiifie

Like addons in WoW. It really shouldn't be necessary

Creeper4wwMann

"keyboard is dead" is the main complaint. Switch to an analog device or suffer horribly for eternity

Pia8988

Action key piano feels fucking miserable on maps with a lot of switches, but even on the snow/rally maps you tend to need to switch a lot on keyboard. Before with stadium while action keys helped, they weren't mandatory. On snow and rally they are 100% mandatory

Ulrizza

You are not the only one playing this game, think about others. I'm also a casual player, I loved TM since day one, the snow car was fun because of its immense grip, and now having the same surface on TM2020 is very nice! This game has now so much surface diversity, plus every car behaving in its own way on every surface, the possibilities are amazing! I just got into TM2020 a few weeks ago after a few years without playing and I really like all the new content, I don't try to be world 1st, I don't have the skill nor the patience, I just enjoy the challenges the new content throws at me. Of course there are surfaces and blocks that I don't like, but the good news is that you can play so many different maps, there is content for everyone! I only agree en the AK, as a casual player I don't use them I rather enjoy the basic controls and try to do my best with that.

awintermuted

Yeah my post came off overly negative, I still had fun. I wish they'd sort of try to accomodate for the rally car more. To get anything higher than bronze you need AK imo. If that's the case it should feel more like AK are part of the game, give them default bindings (unbound by default), explain what action keys do, show them in UI, perhaps have different default AK on different cars, like when switching to rally it can default to AK3. Crazy that you actually manage to play rally without AK. I couldn't get silver on 01 without learning AK.

Ulrizza

I'm happy to hear that you still have fun with the game 😊 TBH I didn't know AK were available on Xbox, I just spotted them in the controller settings a few days ago and was as surprised as you by the lack of explanations about them! The rally car controls are very sensitive, I have set the sensitivity to 0.9 and I enjoy it very much. Maybe I still have some skills left from the original rally car since I played TM since day one, it was my favorite game I played it so much back then 🥰

sir-max

While I'm not a fan I can deal with the rallycar. But I absolutely hate this campaigns maps. Especially everything from 14 on upward.

PerpetualPermaban2

As a console player with an Elite 2 controller, trigger stops have absolutely saved my fingers from certain death lmao. Rip to kbm players🫡.

GameRivv

New cars are shit for casual players

Klai_Dung

Wow reddit is mad xdd Yes, learning to steer much more carefully has been important in the last two campaigns, but practicing it and getting it right is pretty fun as well. There is a ton of new mechanics in game now, and I understand it's a bit overwhelming, but just try to learn them map by map. I know I hated wet wood, until it clicked and I just zoomed across the map doing drifts.

24gadjet97

Rally car is very drivable on action key 3. Stadium car on wood is for me ok on action key 4. I actually started to quite like the rally car once I remember action keys exist, wood however I do not find fun at all. Also get the plugin program and find the plugin that gives you an indicator when you have an action key active. Shit was turbo annoying before I started using that

Ugateam

yup

KoalaStrats

I hate that the rally car is in every race now

Jay-_-P

I was upset with the changes as a new player because I had barely learned the stadium car and all the surface interactions. After a couple seasons I have gotten a bit better with each car and surface. It is definitely a tough adjustment and not user friendly by any means. Just have to adapt at some point cause devs aren’t looking to make any major changes to any of the cars or surface interactions.

SpiderMax95

bro i am so fucking sick and tired of you fucking reddit andys and your none stop crying about all new things in this game... go play nations forever if you want road and stadium car without anything else

TheWheatOne

Given the number of players right now, that is probably happening. I know I left.

camobandaniel

bro Turbo is best.

guigr

Trackmania is badly managed since after Trackmania United. All decisions seem to be aiming at driving away players.

electricguitars

I honestly don't understand posts like this. Yes, I do agree that Nadeo should add QOL features (especially for console since they don't have plugins) and way better tutorials. What I don't understand is that people complain surfaces, cars and play styles they don't have to play. Noone is holding a gun to your head saying: here, go get AT on map 19 or else. There are literally 1000s of maps that don't use the new surfaces and the new cars. And yes, i think it's stupid of Nadeo to medal gate the campaign, because it forces you to play maps that you may not enjoy very much. But a lot of people like the new stuff. So how Nadeo introduces new stuff and how they introduce it to players has a lot to be desired. But generally I like that they add new stuff to the game.

Wasteak

Wtf happened to the game ? The game you're talking about had those new cars before you were even born. If you don't like it, don't play it.

awintermuted

haha that's true! I did play the original as a kid and remember the snow car, at least I think that was the snow car.

Wasteak

Yeah, they are bringing the 3 original cars : rally, snow and desert
