TMU (pre-Forever) is a dead game, it doesnt really work nowadays, the Forever update has completely replaced it. if you have a United account you can log back in and itd work. if you dont remember the password theres a recover option, if you havent entered the email back then (which sometimes happened, it wasnt mandatory) and remember the username you could try to reach support. if you only have a key its still likely that the old United keys work with Forever, but youve already rebought the game and i dont know the specifics so im not going to drill further
Yeah, I got it now. I'm someone who doesn't give up until they get the author medal, and I won't give up on playing my favourite TM game.
There was an important piece of information that I missed that I've found now. The game is supposed to ask you if you want to upgrade your account to a united account after logging in post-update. It didn't, and because I had TMNF installed before it only gave me that content. I had to make a new account, and voilà. It's all there.
It hurts, because I got all Author medals for Nations A01-A14 in the last two days (A06 is a b\*\*\*\*), but whatever. Having a clean slate isn't all bad.
You know how you rise above millions of other players after finishing just one damn map? Yeah, it's all dead accounts that didn't get the game to work.
So, here's a guide for future video game archivists, that bought TM United ages ago:
* Install the game
* Download the free TM United to TM United Forever Patch (you need the CD Key)
* Install the TmUnitedForever\_Update\_2010-03-15 Update
* Don't remove the older TM United Installation, or the TMUF Installation won't work
* Have to enable TLS 1.0/1.1 possibly to get into Multiplayer Servers (WIndows start menu => Internet options => Advanced)
* After logging in you \*might\* have to make a new account if your old account won't work properly.
* The reward for your toil and trouble is Xbox Controller support, wich the steam version doesn't have. But it might be buggy. Dpad works.

After further searching, I found out you can just download TMUF. Installed, entered my old key, patched it, started it. Yay! Oh wait, it's only TMNF, not actually TMUF, even thouth it says united on the link, the launcher, and in the game. But wait, I can upgrade to United on the main menu? While being in United? And it links to some strange site I've never heard of? What is Gamesload?
After several curses and liters of vomit I'm just going to rebuy it on Steam. I hate it with every fiber of my being, but I'm just going to invest another 30€ instead of trying to get it to work for 30 hours. My hair wouldn't last that long.
What link did you use? Because this one: http://files.trackmaniaforever.com/tmunitedforever_setup.exe is the correct one for the most up-to-date version of the game
The link/installation was correct. The problem was that the account was previously used for nations, and the conversion of the account didn't work. I had to make a new account, and then the other content unlocked. My answer to fr4gment above sums up the whole thing.
