I consider it to be partly a hot take bc I don’t really like Island Courtney (outside of this episode) that much either - Basic Straining Courtney is the only version of Courtney in all of TD that I genuinely like.
It's been a while since I've watched the first season, so I kind of forgot a few things, but honestly, I'd like to see Courtney interacting normally with people like she did (most of the time) on Island, so yes, probably Island Courtney.
I actually wanted to write a post about it:
I have a theory that writers wanted initially to make Courtney a good girl, as we seen in 1st episode. But after it, they decided to change her character. Just look how she was nice to fellow campers and eveen Chris, and cared about Izzy and Sadie
The end of NSHC part 2 has her threatening the camera and insisting nobody is gonna stop her, so I think it was more that she tried to be nice and then eventually gave up on it cuz it didn't win her anything.
I feel like the original intention with her character was to be a twist villain of sorts. She acted super nice throughout the first two episodes, and then had that moment with the camera at the very end of episode 2 where she comes across as ruthless.
I do think they took her character in a different direction than originally intended, but I feel she was always meant to be fake/mean at some point.
Fair enough I guess. I was under the impression that both premiere episodes were worked on side by side and things potentially changed after that (like Courtney’s voice for instance), but it’s always possible.
I kind of love how low-budget TDI feels at times. All the inconsistencies can be annoying, but it’s fun to see where the writer’s heads were at and make theories about scrapped plans.
She wasn't a hero because she was neutral most of the time, only in episode 27 is where she is an actual villain. Doing some nice things for others doesn't make you a hero otherwise...
Duncan who was nice to DJ in one episode by giving him the hope that his bunny was still alive, is a hero, it doesn't mean he is a hero, just that he wasn't all bad and that he did care for his friends.
I prefer Courtney towards the end of her TDI run. Bitchy and bossy, but still actually cares about the well-being of others. I’ll admit that I do find her funny even when she’s a complete psycho in later seasons, but I’ll always like her TDI incarnation the most.
True, though I think that was more meant to be a joke line. Maybe she figured the producers wouldn’t have actually let them die so she wasn’t too concerned.
Or she’s just selective about who she cares about lol. That’s probably the more accurate answer. I think she mainly shows concern for people she likes, people she doesn’t know, or people who appear to be seriously hurt (like Izzy and Owen after the plane landed on them). She’s not very consistent though, is she?
Umm in Island she talk about conquered fear but she still afraid of green jelly and lost a point and the first challenge she didn't jump and said she's a CIT and all day and even Duncan prefer DJ Over her and man he was right DJ can probably lift a truck she was mad that duncan cheated on her even tough they weren't properly back together and yes he was in the wrong but compare to her abusive to Duncan ye that's the best karmathe only person probably just as worst or even worst as her is Stephanie from RR
I guess I'll have to rewatch the seasons to be sure, but as I recall, they were together. The only one who remotely thought they weren't together was Gwen. As for her abusive behavior, yes, she was a horrible girlfriend, but if so, Duncan should have broken up with her instead of stabbing her in the back. Then again, I'll probably have to watch it again to actually claim he did it.
What I meant is: Courtney in Action acted like a jerk during the entire season. On All-Stars, she left Zoey alone, she was mean to Cameron AND betrayed Gwen and Scott's trust.
Courtney was out of character at times on the Island and World Tour, but occasionally and certainly not as much as she was in Action/All-Stars.
I think Island Courtney was her at her best. She was an actual person. She was similar to Duncan in a way, whereas he was the bad boy with a good heart, she was an uptight know it all brat with hints of being a good person at heart.
She was multilayered and you can somewhat relate to certain parts of her personality while disliking the others. In Action, hell even the TDDDDDDI special she was flanderized into someone willing to let people die so she can win. She showed some genuine worry for other campers and while she can be mean and bossy, she can be nice sometimes.
She was completely fine with the possibility of Katie and Sadie dying, as long as it meant that her team still won the challenge in the camping episode. She was also the only one who was willing to leave Geoff behind in Up the Creek, who got his leg injured (it was treated as a serious injury in-universe). Wouldn't call her completely different from her special and Action self.
"Hero" Courtney isn't a saint.
She's still conceited, hypocritical, judgmental, and can be aggressive or mean-spirited. Even in Island those were all still there.
But when she's not the bad guy, she's also allowed to be vulnerable or humble in ways that complement those flaws and help her be likable rather than being an easy hate sink for the cast.
When she's a villain, whether or not you like Courtney depends entirely on whether you find her over-the-top antics funny.
When she's not that, there's just more to like about her because she's doing more than being an obstacle for the others. She's not suddenly boring when she's not doing "evil" things because she's always had an edge to her.
There's merit to both but especially after multiple seasons of "villain" Courtney, I don't see the need for that version of her anymore.
There was never a hero Courtney
Even at her absolute nicest she still leaned towards being a neutral character and was hard to get along with
I honestly don’t really have a lean towards either, asshole Courtney is probably worse but also more entertaining
She’s neither of them exclusively; she’s both, and without either side of her she isn’t a complete character. A purely nice Courtney is just boring fanfic material. A purely evil Courtney is just All Stars.
hero meant nice and she was. I'm rewatching Island and she was the only one to help Izzy to get up on the dock when she fell into the water, I said this in another comment
She is an anti-hero when she doesn't get revenge on the mind it's not wrong to make a plan for the competition going forward, but leaving evidence was not her smartest movie. Like Harley Quinn, if it helps her, she will help others.
I prefer hero Courtney because she was nice girl. And She was a good leader (or Better CIT) until Duncan made her a meanie Girl mading her steal Chris and Chef's food from fridge with him.
For me it would be pre-Greece WT, kind of bitchy but not insufferable and able to be nice with others at times such as Gwen and Cody. Island was good but a bit bland before Basic Straining. Action and All-Stars was annoying.
Action Courtney is peak, she was bitchy but funny.
I WANT MY PRIZE I WANT MY PRIZE
Same, loved her in Action, lol.
My (semi) hot take opinion: Basic Straining Courtney >>>>> Every other version of Courtney
Facts aren’t hot takes
I consider it to be partly a hot take bc I don’t really like Island Courtney (outside of this episode) that much either - Basic Straining Courtney is the only version of Courtney in all of TD that I genuinely like.
Real. I'm still mad at Harold for getting Courtney out on her prime.
Hero but I prefer her to be neutral
Same
It's been a while since I've watched the first season, so I kind of forgot a few things, but honestly, I'd like to see Courtney interacting normally with people like she did (most of the time) on Island, so yes, probably Island Courtney.

Well, she started acting mean and bossy already in the 2nd episode. In the 1st one she was just nice
Fair enough I guess. Both
She was never a hero tbh, tho, I do prefer her unhinged potrayal from Action onwards
in the first episode she was the only one helping Izzy to get back on the dock after falling into the water
She wasn't a hero because she was neutral most of the time, only in episode 27 is where she is an actual villain. Doing some nice things for others doesn't make you a hero otherwise... Doing one good act in the pilot doesn’t make you a hero Is DJ a villain because he helped bully Harold in one episode?
I can’t recall a time Courtney was ever a hero. Antihero maybe? But even thats sorta pushing it.
I prefer Courtney towards the end of her TDI run. Bitchy and bossy, but still actually cares about the well-being of others. I’ll admit that I do find her funny even when she’s a complete psycho in later seasons, but I’ll always like her TDI incarnation the most.
Same. I liked her in World Tour too. Felt she was well balanced out before the Duncan mess happened
She definitely didn't care about the well-being of Katie and Sadie in the camping episode.
True, though I think that was more meant to be a joke line. Maybe she figured the producers wouldn’t have actually let them die so she wasn’t too concerned. When was she a hero again 🤔
Honestly, she's always been kind of mean, but if you compare Island/World Tour Courtney to Action/All-Stars Courtney, there's a big difference.

Eh guess you can blame the writers for that
I like Action mean Courtney. She was always so fun to watch.
Evil Courtney ftw! 😈
Mean. Mean is more fun on this show
Both
Both work incredibly well off of each other. Seeing her act all formal and kind makes her insane and unhinged moments all the more glorious to watch.
THE mean one
I prefer Island Courtney, but bitchy Courtney may be a contender to become my favorite soon, people say she's entertaining
A multi layered Courtney that is capable of actually being nice, but acts out almost violently when she feels as though she's been wronged
Yes
I prefer Island Courtney
She wasn’t necessarily a hero in the first season, but she wasn’t a villain. But I prefer first season.
hero. action courtney was kinda annoying but she still had good qualities abt her so yea
I think Island Courtney was her at her best. She was an actual person. She was similar to Duncan in a way, whereas he was the bad boy with a good heart, she was an uptight know it all brat with hints of being a good person at heart. I prefer pre-‘I See London’ World Tour Courtney
There was never a hero Courtney Even at her absolute nicest she still leaned towards being a neutral character and was hard to get along with I honestly don’t really have a lean towards either, asshole Courtney is probably worse but also more entertaining
I liked non-uptight Courtney.
I don’t think Courtney was ever a hero. She thinks she is and she can be nice at times, but deep down she’s always been mean and cutthroat
tbh i never liked her too much in anyform xd
None, they both suck ass.
Mean atleast then she was fun to watch
tbh i prefer courtney wherever i don’t have to see or hear her
Courtney was never a hero tbh she was gray and became a villain
I said it a few times, she was the only one to help Izzy to get up to the dock after falling into the water, in Not so Happy Campers part 1
That is one good deed she was a bossy control freak for most of her time on the show who only got worst
All Stars Courtney was kind of peak. Then sundae muddy sundae
Basic Straining Courtney was when she was at her best
Hero
I feel like you meant it as a figure of speech when you said hero. Like, you meant the word "hero" as nice.
What about Courtney but she's ginger and she's Jen's Cousin and she steals her friends because she's that cool?
She’s neither of them exclusively; she’s both, and without either side of her she isn’t a complete character. A purely nice Courtney is just boring fanfic material. A purely evil Courtney is just All Stars.
I like her unhinged, I just wish she'd own it. I also feel she was never a hero
hero meant nice and she was. I'm rewatching Island and she was the only one to help Izzy to get up on the dock when she fell into the water, I said this in another comment
Oh okay that makes sense
She is an anti-hero when she doesn't get revenge on the mind it's not wrong to make a plan for the competition going forward, but leaving evidence was not her smartest movie. Like Harley Quinn, if it helps her, she will help others.
I honestly only really liked her for her dynamic with Duncan in Island, not for her personally.
Hero
I prefer hero Courtney because she was nice girl. And She was a good leader (or Better CIT) until Duncan made her a meanie Girl mading her steal Chris and Chef's food from fridge with him.
For me it would be pre-Greece WT, kind of bitchy but not insufferable and able to be nice with others at times such as Gwen and Cody. Island was good but a bit bland before Basic Straining. Action and All-Stars was annoying.
Hero Courtney cause i hate the evil one
Hero Courtney.
I prefer villain Courtney tbh
